Keeping the Beat

Rate this book
Rock stars do more than break records…they break hearts.

Claire

To everyone else, Dylan Graves is this cool, sexy rock star—and not just because of his British accent. But to me he’ll always be the law student who swept me off my feet my semester in London. The biggest lesson I learned that semester? Not to get mixed up with him again.

But to take my career to the next level I need to show the world what I’m capable of. And no one else has given me a better chance than the man better than anyone at breaking my heart.

Dylan

Six years. That’s how long I’ve lived with a constant hum of anxiety under my skin. The uncertainty of knowing where I stand with Claire. She might have agreed to work with me again, but I want more. I want her to open herself up to the fire that once threatened to consume us. But she’s the one who could decide at any moment that it’s not worth it.

I lost her once because I couldn’t answer one simple question. This time I’m going to tell her the truth and hope like hell it’s enough.

Because losing her again, I’m not only risking my heart, but my soul as well.

Keeping the Beat is the third book in the Heart Beats series. If you like second chance romance between a hot British rock star and the one who got away, you don’t want to miss the undeniable chemistry between Dylan and Claire.

Keeping the Beat (Heart Beats #3) by Breanna Lynn is a contemporary second-chance rock star romance told in first person, dual POV. Although it’s book three of a series, it can be read as a standalone. However, reading the previous books first provides the most enjoyable experience because those characters reappear in subsequent books.

Keeping the Beat follows the relationship between former college sweethearts, rock star Dylan Graves and video director Claire Shaffer. Dylan wants Claire to direct his music video, but he has an ulterior motive—he wants her back. Claire doesn’t want anything to do with Dylan. He broke her heart six years ago and never looked back, so what does he want with her now? Can Dylan convince Claire to work with him? Will she give him a second chance? Could things be different this time, or will history repeat itself?

I loved Claire and Dylan’s story. As characters, they were fully developed, relatable, and engaging—although, at times, I found Claire’s double-minded back-and-forth exhausting. I enjoyed the glimpses into their college romance, and rooted for Dylan and Claire to find their way back to each other. Their story was angsty, steamy, and sweet. I'm looking forward to reading whatever the author writes next.

I love a good second chance romance and Dylan was definitely willing to put in the effort to win back Claire.

Dylan and Claire dated six years ago while she was studying abroad in England. She encouraged him to follow his dreams pursuing music and was there when his career got started. Now six years later Dylan is a famous rockstar and Clair is a music video director. Dylan is determined to win her back by using her directing his next video as an excuse to get close to each other. The chemistry between them is intense but Claire is afraid of getting hurt again.

This story jumped between present time and six head ago. I enjoyed it because it was easier to see how they have grown over time and revealed their initial relationship overtime in little bits which made this book feel like a slow burn and fast burn all at once which was pretty fun.

This meant it took a really long time to figure out why exactly they broke up six years ago. So it made it a little bit harder to connect to these characters because I wasn’t sure if I was rooting for Dylan to win her back or not. I mean I was hoping that the reason for the breakup wasn’t something insurmountable (like if either of them cheated) but I wasn’t sure. Luckily I was right and was really satisfied with the ending even if they both needed a wake up call. 🤣

I don't think you're ready for this!!! Holy smokes, I've been DYING to read Dylan and Claire's book since we saw their interaction in a previous book. Breanna did NOT let me down! Sometimes I find myself hesitant to read a 2nd or 3rd book in a series I really love, because it seems so impossible to love the new characters as much as I loved the originals, but I am SOOOOOO grateful that I jumped into this one with both feet! Dylan is the most delicious, sweet, slightly insecure Rockstar, and he utterly stole my heart. And Claire, she is just the toughest, most loyal, loving, hard working badass there is. I loved watching her get wooed, swept off her feet, reminded of her value as well as her past. She's a force of nature. But the way Breanna wove the story, her talent with words, her ability to describe such vivid visualizations of each and every interaction just blew me away again. I've read every book this woman has written and you better believe I'll keep writing everything she releases. She's brilliant, and ridiculously talented. I hope you give her a chance, I love these two more than I even hoped was possible. See y'all on another page!

Overall I thought this book was pretty good. For some reason though, I didn’t fully feel Claire and Dylan’s connection. The flashbacks just didn’t pull me in and make me completely buy in to their relationship. Also, the constant resistance on Claire’s part felt a bit forced (I get it a couple times, but it lasted for more than halfway through the book and for not a completely compelling reason)… but it was definitely well-written and the trope is awesome! I love a good rock star romance!

Rock star, real man.

A love affair which died at university, the aftershocks remaining six years on. Dylan is now world famous, but still, when asked to produce his next video, Claire doesn't make the connection until he's standing in front of her, pretending they've never met before.
Two wonderful, vulnerable people who are afraid of what they want. Claire is scared of her heart being broken again, Dylan that he won't get her back.
A sweet and scorching romance with some great background characters. Loved it

ARC Review

Keeping the Beat (Heart Beats #3) is Claire and Dylan's story. This couple met when Claire was an exchange student in London and Dylan was a law student. Dylan feels trapped when he's expected to carry on the family tradition of becoming a lawyer. Claire encourages him to follow his dreams and happiness by becoming a singer instead. When Dylan's music career takes off, he and Claire encounter some hardships and end up breaking up. Six years later, they meet again when Claire is the director for his music video.

What worked for me:
-I love a good Second Chance Romance trope. Dylan realizes he made a mistake in letting Claire go six years ago and vows to win her back
-I enjoyed the alternating timeline. The author switches between the current timeline and events that happened six years prior.
-We get appearances from Jax and Charlie and Nick and Meredith. I love how Jax and Dylan cleared the air after their disastrous first meeting and end up becoming friends. And Charlie and Meredith stepping in to help Dylan and Claire reconcile was hilarious.
-Steam level = high! Dylan and Claire on the kitchen counter, in the lifeguard shack on the beach, in the back of a car while they're on their first date. *fans self*

What didn't work for me:
-Perhaps a more varied way to describe attraction/arousal is needed. There was a lot of "soaked panties" and "hard cocks against zippers".

Overall, I give this 4/5. Claire and Dylan were so sweet and I'm thrilled they got their happy ever after.

Second chances and learning to trust again is the journey we are privy to in this latest book by this author. Although we met Claire and Dylan in a previous book, this is their story.

Things end badly after a six-month fling while Claire is abroad in London. Dylan had been on track to follow in the family business as a lawyer but was unhappy. While the chemistry is off the charts, is that enough? Six years later, both are successful, but are they happy? Memories are long; do they still think about each other? Can they do the work to find their way back to one another?

Keeping the Beat is the third book in this series and can stand alone. However, this reader recommends reading them in order; because the stories are interconnected.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

This book had the potential to be an amazing read, but it just fell a little flat for me. There just wasn't enough drama and angst to really pull me in to the story, and I honestly just didn't feel Claire and Dylan's connection like I thought I should have.

That being said, it was very well-written, and I have loved Breanna's other rockstar romances, so I would definitely give it a try.

Breanna Lynn has another fantastic rock star book with Keeping the Beat. It's about former lovers Dylan, a single British artist Claire a music videographer. The record label that signed Dylan also employs Claire, who makes their music videos. The music video caused forced proximation between the two former college sweethearts. The memories hidden in the hearts of both are not just ripping them up inside but tearing them apart. Claire's dug in deep to protect herself from the hurt and betrayal that Dylan caused when he first walked away from her. Dylan wants Claire any way he can get her. This story! GUH! It invoked so many emotions that I laughed, cried (many tears), and wanted to cheer on Dylan in his antics to win Claire back. I also wanted to shake some sense into Claire to just listen to her heart! Keeping With the Beat comes alive to the reader as one becomes emersed in the authors' words. In this 3rd installment in the Heart Beats Rockstar series, a HEA is guaranteed, as in all of Breanna Lynn's books, with no cheating or cliffhanger.

When he gets her a D*MN book?! My heart!

This rockstar, second chance is going to have you falling in love. Dylan is determined to get Claire back in his life and is pulling out all the stops to even get a moment of her time. He let her go once, and he refuses to have it happen a second time. Between swooning over the present and past Dylan, I wasn't sure who I loved more. (No shock, Present Dylan knows what's up.)

As I did mention, there are alternating chapters between past and present. I know that isn't for everyone, but Breanna Lynn did an amazing job weaving the two stories together.

Once again, another wonderful addition to the series and a book I'll always recommend. This is the 3rd book of the series, but still can be read as a standalone. Releasing the 24th, be sure to add this book to your TBR now!

Passion is the same, whether its  love or hate.

Claire and Dylan are from two different worlds.   One is a legacy, groomed to follow the same path as those who came before, the other, "the baby" who wants to spread their wings.  The way they met is like it was written in a song.

Oh how young love can be  perfect and rose colored, then in one moment, can come crashing down.  Six years later, the universe conspires to reunite them.  This could be their second chance.  If they dare, could they rewrite history?

I love how the author brought these two characters to life. Once again,  her characters are full bodied,  and the laughter and light drama pull you in.  The storyline flows between six years, and shows how the characters mature and evolve.  I can't wait to see who is next in the HeartBeats world.

After a six-month fling that didn't end well, Dylan and Claire are brought back together again, and Dylan is not going to lose her this time. He's a sexy rocker who took Claire's advice and followed his heart, but also fulfilled his family legacy by becoming a lawyer. In her memories, Claire still remembers him as the fellow student she fell in love with during her studies in England. When he breaks her heart, she tries to forget him, but Dylan finds a way to get her back into his life. Told in two different time frames, the insight into their former and present love is very well done. Their connection is deeper because of it, and I was fully invested in their love story. The heat between them is palpable and their love is brought full circle in this beautiful story. The reappearance of the people we have come to adore makes this a wonderful addition to the Heart Beats series.

Keeping the Beat is book three of the Heart Beat series…all are interconnected standalones. It is another beautifully written book by Breanna Lynn!

Dylan and Claire were college sweethearts but then Dylan broke Claire’s heart when he left on tour. Dylan comes back into Claire’s life 6 years later and wants her to direct his newest music video. Claire is dead set against allowing him back into her life!

In book three we get more of Jackson and Charlie and also Nick and Meredith. I love when series bring in characters from previous books in the series!

This book has angst, heartbreak, humor and spice. I can’t wait to see what else Breanna writes…I will definitely be reading her future work!

Another wonderful book in this series. This is a fantastic second chance romance with wonderful characters. Claire is a strong, smart, witty woman who has hardened her heart against the boy who broke her heart. Dylan is the hunky British rockstar who pulls out all the stops to show Claire he has changed. This was such a great story and the tension and growth between Claire and Dylan is tangible. I loved seeing the characters from the previous books and catching up on their lives. I absolutely love this series and even though you don't need to read the first two books to enjoy the third, I highly recommend reading the series!

This is the first book I've read by Breanna Lynn and let me just say I'm so glad I decided to read her book! I have the first 2 books in this series and I'm definitely going to go back and read them! Rockstar romance is becoming a favorite trope for me!
I was hooked from the moment I began reading this until the end. Claire and Dylan are great together and I'm so happy they get their HEA! I love their chemistry! Woo! And Dylan's British accent? I loved it! Who can resist a British accent?
I definitely recommend this book!

Finally we get Dylan and Claire’s story! We met them in a prior book and it’t time they shine. We get a lot of past glimpses which I love because I find it really helps build a character ark and depth to them as well as we get to see them grow.

This book is filled with angst but is the second chance we needed out of this series. Claire was strong and held her ground on a lot and Dylan really has to work to earn her back. That makes some of the best pages though. We are readers get woooed right along with there heroine.

An emotional roller coaster of a book, for sure; but I so enjoyed the ride!!!

Dylan and Claire met, when she travelled to England for a semester of school. They hit it off, right from the start. A short relationship and falling in love take a backseat, when Dylan's newfound career takes off, they have to choose for themselves where to go.

Fast forward six years, they've had no contact, but even for the short time they were together, they were never out of each other's thoughts. Dylan has come for Claire, he wants her back, he needs her in his life - but he also wants her for her current career choice. She's good, he knows it and she knows it.

This was so cute!!! It had all the things you want in a second chance romance: a decent gap since the breakup (6 years), a mutually beneficial reason to reunite, a good pace going between flashbacks and present day, and of course good character development related to a rough breakup and concerns to work through. A perfect balance of sweet and steam, and a nice epilogue.

Definitely a series I’ll go back and read the first ones.

The Best One Yet

Breanna’s Heart Beats world just keeps getting better with each book. I can definitely see where she’s growing as a writer and Book 3 is the best one of the series so far. I would have liked to see Dylan realize how he was repeating history and wanted more of an apology for that from him, but overall, this is a great read sure to satisfy every romance lover’s heart. Be sure to grab the bonus epilogue because that was my favorite scene 💕

This is the third book in the series and each book keeps getting better. It’s a second chance book, so these two have met (and dated) before. The book travels back and forth between past and present. It gives you a look at the two main characters when they were much younger and naive. Will they make the same mistakes they did years ago or will they realize they were meant to be together? This book is definitely worth the read.

“I miss your touch. The memory of your taste.”

I was already prepared to like this book because the hero is a British Rockstar. I have a thing for British Rockstars. I was very excited to discover this is a really good one, too. Dylan is everything I love in a hero and I really connected with Claire. Their past broke me and their present filled me with hope. The story jumps back and forth from the past to the present but surprisingly it works. Breanna did a very good job with something that is often confusing or tedious. I think it was perfect for this book as it really was two stories, one of Claire and Dylan back then and one of Claire and Dylan today. I really enjoyed it and now plan to read other books in the series.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the third book in the Brenna Lynn Heart Beats series. I read the second but did not read the first, while you get visits from the previous characters you do not have to read them all to be able to enjoy the book. This is a second chance romance with a rockstar as the main male. You go back and forth from present day to their past romance. The hesitation from the female to give a second chance was a lot. Over all cute story with steam and a HEA.

I love Breanna Lynn's books! I was in a reading rut and this definitely got me put of it. Finished in less than a day! While it wasn't as drama filled I still greatly enjoyed it. The truth is, real life isn't always overdramatic and this showed that. Sometimes life is just full of miss communication and I think this story showed that beautifully.

There is just something about a Breanna Lynn novel that makes your heart give a thump.

I loved reading this book, and can't decide which romance I had liked more of the three. The second book of this series was incredible, but now that I found love in this story, I was hooked, absolutely and irrevocably hooked forevermore.

Who doesn't love a British Hottie?

Overall, this story will get you in the feels, with the Heart Beats series you get musical genius' in their element and a love story that is filled with HEA's!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this novel!

wow

Wow, just wow! I have truly fallen in love with Dylan and Claire. Dylan has a heart of gold but sometimes things like a man… Claire on the other hand is once burned twice shy… She loves with her whole heart but is afraid to let it show. Dylan wears his heart on his sleeve. There is so much going right and wrong for this couple. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

Good story

I enjoyed the story, and absolutely fell in love with Dylan, but in all honesty it felt really dragged out. I think the pacing was perfectly fine for the first 1/3 of the book, but after that it just felt unnecessarily & sometimes painfully slow. It felt like there was so little happiness, and especially so little of the HEA in comparison to the turmoil. At least it didn’t ever cry though, so there’s that.

Claire and Dylan

In this second chance romance we get to go back in time and watch Claire and Dylan fall in love then crash and burn. Six years later Claire is done but Dylan won't stop until he proves to her they are worth fighting for! I love Breanna Lynn's writing style! Her books are fun to read with just the right amount of heart and spice! And don't forget to download the bonus ending!
