Making a Stand for Animals
Engaging and thought-provoking, this book examines how humans see and treat other animals and argues that we should extend equal consideration and respect to all beings, human and nonhuman alike.
Our world is plighted by 'isms' - racism, sexism and ageism to name a few - but we may have overlooked a very important one: speciesism. Speciesism is a form of discrimination against those who don't belong to a certain species and it is a concept which raises controversial questions over humanity's complicated and often controversial relationship with other animals. It drives us to see non-human animals as objects, rather than individuals with their own interests and with the ability to feel and suffer. Our feelings of superiority have empowered us to feel entitled to own animals as pets, to eat them, to use them for entertainment and we have created an environment where cruel treatment is a common occurrence. This book questions all of the assumptions speciesism is based upon. Thinking about how animals are used as well as the suffering of wild animals, and what the future may be for all beings, this book advocates for society to seriously take into account the interests of all animals.

Powiem tak: to bardzo dobra startowa książka.
Zawsze gdy czytam książki o gatunkowizmie, przemocy wobec zwierząt, o krytyce masowej hodowli, przeogromnym cierpieniu zwierząt wykorzystywanych w najróżniejsze sposoby zastanawiam się, czy one mogą zmienić czyiś punkt widzenia. Nie potrafię sobie nigdy na to odpowiedzieć, bo czytam je jako osoba „już przekonana”, ale gdy czytałam tę książkę, widziałam w swojej wyobraźni osoby, którym taka lektura może mogłaby pomóc sobie coś usystematyzować lub umocnić kogoś w poczynionych postanowieniach. Dobra argumentacja, obrazowe przykłady, przystępnie napisana.

It's in our hands to leave as our legacy a better world for all sentient beings, both for those who live now and for those who will exist in the future. There's a lot we can do for them. Just a beautifully crafted book covering more or less all one needs to know when it comes to arguments and practicalities of living a non-speciesist life. I have fairly stark differences with Oscar in a short section about how to consider collective action problems how moral responsibility fits in with said situations, but that pales in comparison to all of the out markedly well-put arguments and information throughout. This might be the go-to recommendation for those new to this topic.

Si ya te has interesado por el activismo animalista, es probable que los primeros capítulos del libro te parezcan obvios y muy simples. Sin embargo, estos capítulos son de gran utilidad si estás empezando en la defensa de los animales y asientan las bases de los temas que se tratarán más adelante.
El libro trata una variedad impresionante de argumentos y casos sin profundizar demasiado en cada tema, para que la lectura no se haga pesada, pero aportando fuentes que posibilitan la investigación por cuenta del lector. Los argumentos son válidos para todo tipo de personas, pues se tratan desde distintos puntos de vista y siempre desde la lógica.
Recomendaría este libro a gente que aún contribuya al maltrato animal, ya sea con su asistencia a actividades de ocio que impliquen animales como por su alimentación a base de productos animales, pues es en estas personas donde la lectura puede tener un mayor efecto.
Como animalista, he podido reforzar y ampliar mis argumentos así como mis conocimientos sobre temas más específicos relativos a la defensa de los animales no humanos.

Recomendaría este libro a quién desee comenzar a cuestionarse acerca del especismo e introducirse en el mundo del veganismo. Cuenta con ejemplos claros y concretos, y explicaciones que parten desde la base de las numerosas ramas por las cuales las personas pueden haber llegado a considerar esta cuestión. Para quienes ya estamos más avanzades en el tema, considero que despierta algunos nuevos cuestionamientos y brinda argumentos para poder informar al respecto a terceros, pero es posible que su lectura resulte algo densa ya que, reitero, es introductorio.

August 10, 2019Me parece un libro adecuado para introducirse en el tema de Veganismo, pero al final creo que las últimas páginas salen sobrando y se me ha hecho pesado a pesar de ser muy ligero al principio.
Eso sí: tiene ejemplos muy sencillos y muy intuitivos para explicar la fundamentación del veganismo. Lo cual es independiente de si estamos de acuerdo o no con el veganismo.

Deixo-o com sensaçom agridoce. Por uma banda, celebro que se publique algo assim, agora, em Galiza, e original em galego — nom é sem tempo. Por outra, nom podo evitar sentir que todo o que se está a dizer aqui, estava já dito e bem dito. E muitas vezes, talvez, mesmo melhor.
As pessoas já familiarizadas com a defesa dos animais (posicionadas a favor, em contra, ou neutras) apenas encontrarám aqui os argumentos de sempre, com a efetividade de sempre, explicados de forma ben didática, com abundantes exemplos e comparaçons. Para os primeiriços, som justamente estes os motivos que o fam interessante.
As pessoas já familiarizadas com a defesa dos animais (posicionadas a favor, em contra, ou neutras) apenas encontrarám aqui os argumentos de sempre, com a efetividade de sempre, explicados de forma ben didática, com abundantes exemplos e comparaçons. Para os primeiriços, som justamente estes os motivos que o fam interessante.

Este libro es muy recomendable especialmente también para los “principiantes” con respecto al veganismo, derechos animales y ética animal. Es fácil de leer y con muchos ejemplos prácticos y divertidos como “Cien bandidos”, “El millonario caníbal” y “El botón rojo”.
