Koyuki is preparing for exams and isn’t really doing much of anything else. Konatsu is working with the new members of the Aquarium Club like a good senpai. But while the girls got closer again there’s still a gap lingering between them, and very little time left to close it…
Konatsu and Koyuki were thick as thieves once, but that ended up dwindling over time and their relationship suffered. They patched things up a little, but it turns out that little is quite literal when Koyuki’s plans end up dropped on Konatsu like a bombshell.
The scenes of Koyuki and Konatsu dealing with this are quite good - Konatsu has at least come far enough to realize that it takes two people to make a friendship, even if time means that this knowledge is coming later than she might have wanted.
The beach scene is especially nice as it shows our leads can at least talk things out now rather than shutting down. Well, for the most part anyway, and I think Konatsu being more honest with her feelings is a welcome step. They’re small steps, but it shows that this isn’t a rehash of last time and they’re learning, bit by bit.
When you leave behind somebody close to you in a grade below, it can be rough, and this story does capture that sense of the unknown regarding what lies beyond - will you keep in touch? Will you both change too much? There’s a reason it turns into such an effective cliffhanger at the end.
Kaede gets a lot more to do this volume as well, including an unexpectedly sad backstory for her own home life. She has often been as much a help as a hindrance, not through any ill intent, and the way she comes through for both Koyuki and Konatsu this time is really sweet.
The surprisingly cute development of Koyuki’s brother’s crush on Kaede is also rather adorable. It’s not an insurmountable age gap, but I’m curious to see if this is merely a courtesy on her part or if it actually leads anywhere. The shameless flirting in the moment is pretty fun though.
I guess we’ll see where it goes. I do think that this book’s queer coding frequently works against it, honestly, since, like I noted last time, it’s either baiting the audience or setting things up that won’t pay off.
There’s a very good work on friendship here or a very good work on blossoming love and trying to play it like it could be either (effective or not, that cliffhanger promises volumes I have no confidence will pay off) damages the narrative. Not because you can’t have both, but because it tries to imply both at once without committing and it makes the whole thing feel diluted somehow.
By the time I finished this I had no idea what I thought of it. By the time I finished flipping through it a second time, still nothing. Third time skimming, I was formulating what largely appears above you. I don’t usually do that, which is why this is an especially tricky review.
Like an unfortunate number of series right now it is largely going to come down to what happens in the last volume. Once we see what the actual intent was, truly, I think it will make the rest of the series shine in a better light than the game of ‘maybe this, but maybe that’ it’s playing now.
4 stars - be inscrutable, but clear, and give me something to think about, and apparently I’ll be fine. This is the most ‘from the gut’ I’ve rated something because it feels right, but explaining why is a bit of a thing.
This series is very good but this volume didn't move things much aside from that scene with Konatsu seeing the mascot plush in Koyuki's room. And her talk with Kaede. It's very melancholy but also hopeful. Looking forward to the final volume, c'mon Koyuki and Konatsu, you can make it work!
3.5 rounded down as this just didn’t hit like the awesome multi-volume arc that was in the middle of the series and wrapped up in the previous volume. Koyuki continues to get closer to college and because of that is away for most of the story in cram school. This means less time with Koyuki and her relationship with Konatsu. Instead we get a lot of just fun positive moments and some character building of the secondary cast in the little brother. The little brother continues to be this shy, flustered, and really worried about how others see him. He’s really grown on me over the course of the series as he develops and we see that heart of gold under it that mixes and clashes with not wanting to be seen as a baby. It’s fun and what we get here is more of his feelings with Hirose which I don’t like. I think the concept of a little kid having a crush can be explored tastefully but it’s just been tread so much in this series it’s getting a bit weird. You can feel a sense of guilt over lost time between Konatsu and Koyuki that’s explored pretty well here but I wish it was here more. It’s got that good angsty yearning with teens who struggle to verbalize their feelings which I think this series has done very well at showing. But it’s just not here enough. Instead we get more little brother stuff and it’s not very meaningful or interesting to me. I do think seeing their relationship in this little awkward spot where they both know they’re going to be seeing each other far less and dealing with it is nice here. But again, it’s not explored enough.

So glad they could finally hang out all together! And Konatsu noticed the frog plush. <3
It was also nice learning about Kaede's past, albeit it was rather emotional. It's cool how she wants to make up for it by being like a sister to Fuyuki, kind of, although maybe she should tell him straght forward that he's more like a brother to her. That poor boy will only fall for her more... :') Tbh who wouldn't fall for Kaede, when she's helping out everyone. She got the two together again and is a bit of a replacement for Koyuki, when she's off at cram school and Fuyuki is feeling lonely. It's a win-win though, because Kaede also misses her siblings, so having a little brother around does help.
I don't remember what happened in the last volume since it has been so long since I read this series but with volume 9 being the last, I thought I would finish it.
I am starting to get confused by the characters design on who is who.
Koyuki is preparing for cram exams and Konatsu is teaching the new members of the Aquarium Club which leaves no time for them to spend together. Instead they are closing time.
I enjoyed some of the characters having a sleepover and making dinner. And the late night walk on the beach.
This was a fairly emotional volume in which our characters were forced to face what growing up means for them. It is a pivotal volume for them, but it will be interesting to see how things one decides to end in the next volume.
I enjoyed the story and learning more about Kaede and her family dynamics. Konatsu and Koyuki's relationship is cute and as it gets deeper you learn more about their feelings. Fuyuki is growing as a character and him and Kaede cooking dinner was pretty funny.
I can't believe the next one is gonna be the last, this manga has been so special to me this year and volume 8 was so good, i just want Koyuki and Konatsu to be happy.
This volume feels like a bridge between the last volume and the final volume. I'm still enjoying it and look forward to re-reading the entire series once I get the last volume.
Bro it’s the second to last novel and I’m scared this isn’t even a yuri ☠️ Like I’d be okay with it anyways if it isn’t but I bought it thinking they would get together so if they don’t ummmmmm
The sleepover! This is adorable. I love the Three girls coming together. As well as Hirose and Fuyuki bonding as well. So sweet. Plus lots more salamander and frog.
Idk what to say about this volume because it very much feels like a build up and not much on its own... sooo I'll read the last volume later today, I guess?
