Vladimir Makanin
77 books14 followersVladimir Semyonovich Makanin is a writer of novels and short stories. He graduated from Moscow State University and worked as a mathematician in the Military Academy until the early 1960s. In 1963 he took a course in scriptwriting, and then worked in the publishing house Sovietskiy Pisatel (The Soviet Writer). Makanin's writing style may be categorized as realist. His forte lies in depicting the psychological impact of everyday life experiences.

Een leeservaring zegt vaak iets over het boek, maar nog vaker iets over de lezer. Ofschoon Asan van hoge kwaliteit is, kostte het lezen ervan beduidend meer moeite dan normaal. Steeds een enkel hoofdstukkie. Te druk in het hoofd, denk ik. En toch is Asan een wereldboek.
Zjilin is majoor in het Russische leger ten tijde van de Tsjetsjeense oorlog. Zjilin is geen ijzervreter, hij is depotbeheerder, beheert de brandstoffen, en die functie geeft hem interessante mogelijkheden. Zo verhandelt hij benzine, diesel en andere brandstoffen aan zowel Russen als Tsjetsjenen. Corrupt, zouden we hier zeggen. Maar binnen de gegeven oorlogscontext is het vooral realistisch. Zjilin is een verstandig mens, hij wikt en weegt, hij heeft hart voor zijn collega's en ondergeschikten, heeft respect voor de authenticiteit van Tsjetsjenen.
Aleksander, ofwel Sasjik ofwel Asan geniet wegens zijn mentale onkreukbaarheid en zijn blinde integriteit diep respect bij de Tsjetsjenen. Gaandeweg leren we in een verhaal zonder duidelijke richting (de oorlog is een plotloze chaos) bijzondere mensen kennen. Het schizofrene en getraumatiseerde duo Oleg en en Alik, dat elke situatie weer tot een bloedige puinhoop weet om te toveren. En de nauwelijks serieus te nemen generaal "Nulletje".
Asan vertelt het verhaal van de absurde en onvoorspelbare aard oorlog door de afstandelijke ogen van een welhaast-burgerlijke, boerenslimme, rationele majoor, die keer op keer overleeft door zijn lef. Maar hoe lang gaat het goed?

"Asan wants money. Asan wants blood."
Within the emerging genre of "Chechen," as in referring to the recent Chechen wars, prose, Vladimir Makanin's "Asan" has engendered controversy. To a field zealously guarded by its veterans, the non-veteran Makanin has contributed two works: the novella "Caucasian Captive" (Кавказский пленный) and now the novel "Asan." And to add insult to injury, if you believe that only those with lived experience can write about something, his works have received widespread acclaim and recognition, such that "Caucasian Captive" was adapted for the screen in Aleksey Uchitel's 2008 film "Captive" (Пленный).
And it must be said that Makanin's work deserves the acclaim it has received. Makanin appears to have done his homework, as the books have that ring of authenticity, at least as far as an outsider can tell--"Asan" strikes me as just as realistic and fully realized as, for example, Zakhar Prilepin's "Pathologies" (Паталогии), a novel inspired by the author's own experiences as an OMON officer deployed in the North Caucasus during the wars there.
Where Makanin's work differs from that being produced by many veterans is its polish and literary quality. Which is not to say that authors such as Prilepin, Babchenko, Karasyov, Shurygin, and--on the Chechen side--Eldin are not producing works worth reading, but they for the most part are still young for prose authors, writing in order to process traumatic events they have experienced. While their work is in some ways highly literary, with their education in classical Russian literature, not to mention religious education in the cases of Prilepin and Eldin, fully evident, Makanin's prose has the depth of distance and maturity to it. Unlike the veteran-authors who are attempting to convey what they paradoxically often claim to be unconveyable, the pain and trauma of having been in combat, and whose prose tends to be highly wrought, Makanin's writing has the removed-yet-intimate quality of some of Tolstoy's more famous works.
The reference to Tolstoy is not accidental, as both of Makanin's "Chechen" works are obviously playing off of Tolstoy's "Prisoner of the Caucasus" (Кавказский пленник). The connection is obvious in "Caucasian Captive," which takes the basic plot of Pushkin, Lermontov, and Tolstoy's works of the same name and inverts it. "Asan" is less obviously a reworking of Tolstoy's little masterpiece, except for one detail: the main character of "Asan" is a Major Zhilin, thus sharing the same last name with Tolstoy's Russian officer in "Prisoner of the Caucasus," as well as the young Private Zhilin portrayed by Sergey Bodrov Jr. in the 1996 film "Prisoner of the Mountains" (Кавказский пленник in the original).
Major Zhilin's captivity is less overt than that of Tolstoy's--or Bodrov's--character, but he, too, is in many ways a captive of the Caucasus. He finds himself running a supply depot during both the first and second wars, supplying the Russian troops with fuel--and running his own little business on the side. A basically honest man, Major Zhilin is still one of those corrupt officers who used the war to make money for themselves, something that enables him to protect injured or runaway soldiers, and help desperate mothers ransom their sons who have been captured by Chechen forces. Is Major Zhilin a self-centered schemer, or a modern-day Russian Robin Hood? A bit of both, it seems.
Like most "Chechen" works, "Asan" is at its heart a tragedy, and full of the brutal details of the Chechen wars, where there were no real good guys; rape, pillage, torture, and murder were all commonplace; and even support officers in the rear could find themselves held at gunpoint or pawing through piles of dismembered corpses. But it juxtaposes that brutality with flashes of lyricism and heartfelt sympathy for the people caught up in the war. In the novel, Asan is both the name of a bloodthirsty mythological figure and of a person trying to do the most good he can in bad circumstances, and maybe stay alive against the odds. While the book has, to the best of my knowledge, not yet been translated into English, readers interested in contemporary Russian prose or contemporary war prose should seek out its Russian, Spanish, Polish, or Dutch (??) editions if they can. Asan wants both blood and money, and he also wants to live.

Wat Makanin zo onweerstaanbaar maakt is dat hij vrijelijk put uit de rijke literaire traditie van zijn vaderland, maar er een eigentijdse draai aan geeft. Dit is zijn Oorlog en Vrede (lees oorlog, corruptie en vernietigend mededogen). Met een sterk gevoel voor bijtende ironie schetst hij een figuur die zijn eigen criminele systeem heeft gebouwd binnen de oorlog tegen de Tsjetsjenen. Het is bijna ontroerend hoe deze Aleksandr Sergejitsj Zjilin zich vastbijt in de illusionaire zekerheden die deze oorlog lijkt te bieden, maar er op een pijnlijke manier achterkomt hoe het opgebouwde steeds als een kaartenhuis in elkaar dondert.
Makanin weet zo een fijne balans te vinden tussen affectie en gevoeligheid naar dit hoofdpersonage en een absurdistische, hilarische kijk op de flinke waaier aan bijrollen. In alles wordt het oorlogswezen weerspiegeld als een zinloze exercitie vol financiële exploitatie en morele corruptie. In weerwil van alle heroïek uit oorlogspropaganda is de oorlog hier een alles verslindend systeem dat bepaald niet het beste in de mens naar voren haalt.
Makanin weet zo een fijne balans te vinden tussen affectie en gevoeligheid naar dit hoofdpersonage en een absurdistische, hilarische kijk op de flinke waaier aan bijrollen. In alles wordt het oorlogswezen weerspiegeld als een zinloze exercitie vol financiële exploitatie en morele corruptie. На войнах во все века наживались. Маканин понял это слишком буквально. Для него война — это обстоятельство для ведения ещё одного удачного бизнеса. Потому представленные им действующие лица не испытывают никаких чувств, кроме желания набить карман. Продавая оружие, технику и топливо, они усиливали позиции противника, обеспечивая и собственное настоящее. Правда, такая философия не поддаётся пониманию, поскольку тот противник придёт к тебе домой, не оставив от него камня на камне. Тогда в чём смысл ведения войны ради денег? Всё-таки не участник боевых действий озабочен собственным благосостоянием, то интересно людям, обеспечивающим существование войны. Главный герой романа «Асан» из тех, кто воюет и поставляет материалы. Однако, он всё-таки воюет, и именно война является образом его жизни, тогда как вне войны он себя не мыслит.

Aleksandr Zhilin es un mayor del ejército ruso durante la guerra de Chechenia que se dedica al trapicheo de combustible con los señores de la guerra chechenos. Allí es conocido por los locales como Asán, que es el nombre que recibe un pájaro mitológico.
Asán cuenta las vivencias del mayor Zhilin durante el conflicto y sus negocios de combustible. La historia no tiene demasiado interés, no se empatiza con los personajes ante la monotonía de la trama: emboscadas, reuniones entre militares, tácticas de guerrilla y los clásicos episodios de violencia contra civiles en época de guerra. En este sentido son especialmente reveladoras dos pequeñas historias; la de la mujer que ahorra dinero para pagar a Zhilin por haber salvado a su hijo de los chechenos (y que se le entrega en cuerpo, literalmente) y la historia del secuestro de una famosa periodista de Moscú a la que violan y filman los rebeldes chechenos.

Czeczenia kraina już od XIX w. opuszczona przez Boga i Allacha, miejsce starcia się cywilizacji, miejsce świadczące w końcu o sile imperialnej Rosji. Czeczenia lat 90 to kraina wiecznej wojny, ZSRR upadł, federaliści nie umieli poradzić sobie z miejscowymi Czyczami, jednak dla wielu oficerów i wojskowych majora Żylina , Aleksandra Siergiejewicza, Saszki wojna to jednak ,,pered vsem" interes, to ropa, ,mazut, benzyna i broń, to beczki przeliczane na jedyną mającą tu wartość walutę - USD. Tu się robi biznes, stary generał szuka robotników do remontu daczy, młody major buduje własny dom, by żona mogła powiedzieć tak jesteśmy klasą średnią. Jak w każdej rosyjskiej powieści, i w tej atakuje nas wieczny smutek, ból istnienia i morze alkoholu. Poznajemy zwykłych żołnierzy, podoficerów, chłopów, a także ,,górali", czytamy opowieść Dudajewa ile warta jest przyjaźń, która prowadzi do zdrady. Gdzieś w tle dowiadujemy się o tym jaką była ta kraina dawniej, o dawnych zapomnianych bogach, o Asanie, Aleksandrze Wielkiem, o wyjątkowości tego miejsca. Warto poznać tą opowieść.

Думаю, любому, соприкоснувшемуся с армией, будет понятен взгляд Маканина на войну, как на стихию абсурда, стихию хаоса, которые становятся нормой жизни (и невольно начинаешь думать, что положить конец такой ситуации может только еще большая катастрофа ...).
Это война, в которой нельзя ни победить, ни выжить - спасаются только бегством Костыев и Гусарцев, и до поры до времени контуженные "шизы", как Алик и Олежка, либо же сорви-головы, как капитан Хворь.
А кончается роман политически- (или этически-) корректной гибелью положительного (анти-) героя.
Отдельно о языке: даже дочитав уже до самого конца, так и не привык к "рваному" построению повествования - читаешь и постоянно спотыкаешься.
"По молодости... Он думал, что он предприимчив, в то время как был всего лишь азартен."
Это война, в которой нельзя ни победить, ни выжить - спасаются только бегством Костыев и Гусарцев, и до поры до времени контуженные "шизы", как Алик и Олежка, либо же сорви-головы, как капитан Хворь.

Książka bezstronnie stara się pokazać, wytłumaczyć wojnę. Wojnę na której się sprzedaje, na której się zabija, na której się zdradza przyjaciół. A wszystko oczami Asana- synonimu praktyczności i... ludzkiej chciwości. Wzruszająca.
