A bestselling author helps readers find radical joy in a world full of constant comparison by accepting that life is a wild ride and happiness fluctuates with our circumstances.
Happiness is considered a destination, but the finish line is constantly moving—when we get married, find that dream job, move away from home, have a baby, build a dream house, etc. We are promised that a happy life is tied to these milestones.
But what if society has it wrong? What if happiness isn't the goal at all?
With her trademark candor and hilarious storytelling, MK paints a picture of a different life—one bursting with a force that is far more sustainable and vibrant: joy.
Crazy Joy will help readers:
1. Identify and reject ridiculous expectations that society has placed on their lives.
2. Liberate their hearts from the comparison prison and feel content in their current circumstances.
3. View themselves, inside and out, as the masterpiece creations they are.
4. Find joy (and dare we say, laughter!) in the middle of life's biggest messes.
Witty and refreshingly honest, MK invites her readers to embark on a counter-cultural journey toward a life filled to the brim with contentment, humor, and most importantly, Crazy Joy.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. Opinions expressed are my own.
I’m not going to do a full review, but I do want to clarify a big point for those who may be wondering. Because the book is labeled as “Christian living,” (and because it’s about joy), I was expecting it to have at least some Scriptural references.
There are a few mentions of God and one of Jesus, but no verses. The book was fun to read, with a lot of humor. However, I don’t really understand the genre classification. In my opinion, it just doesn’t make sense that a book about joy, by a Christian author, would leave out the true source of joy.
Every so often publishers will send me emails offering review copies of their latest offerings. When I saw the title Crazy Joy, I was automatically drawn to it and asked for a copy. You see of late, things happening in our world have been weighing on me and maybe even stealing my joy. I figured I needed to read this book. When I review books, I will often look up the author just to find more about them and I did so with Ms. Backstrom. I found some things that showed we would likely have some pretty major disagreements. I became worried specifically because of the sub title of the book: "Finding wild happiness in a world that's upside down." I began to wonder what if she spends her time on what is upside down and the things she thinks are upside down are what I think is right side up? Would I finish this book crazy but without the joy I have been seeking?
I considered not reading the book, but seeing as how I hate cancel culture with the white hot passion of a thousand suns, I decided it would be best not to engage in it. I determined to read the book. I am glad I did. I finished it in two days. This book is devoid of controversy but instead deals with the matter at hand, helping people to find joy and she does it masterfully. This book is chock full of humorous and poignant stories from the author's life (and a few other sources) that meld beautifully with the point she is making. If you are a person who is struggling to find joy, this is a book for you. It is well written, thought provoking and joy invoking. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it reminded me of something else, that I know pretty well but that is missing in much of our society. We don't have to agree on every point to gain from each other. What we need to do is learn to understand each other, "hear" each other out, disagree agreeably and love our neighbors. I think we'd find a lot more joy in life if we did. Nice work Ms. Backstrom.
It was hard for me to connect with this author. I could not follow her train of thought and ideas. I tried to relate and it just felt too choppy for me. I would put the book down and try again and when I picked it back up I still felt the same way. I don't feel I can give this a strong rating. I'm sure others would connect with her writing style, but it just wasn't for me.
I also don't like when books are labeled Christian and they have curse words. This is unneccesary.
I received a copy of this book from Hachette Group for my honest review. Thank you.
I love MKs storytelling but was very disappointed in this book. The book is identified as a Christian Living book and completely missed the mark on joy coming from the Lord. There is no mention of God except random tiny unexplained sentences and misinterpreted scripture the one time a scripture is referenced. While the stories were well told and enjoyable, this was very shallow. ☹️
Crazy Joy: Finding Wild Happiness in a World That's Upside Down by Mary Katherine Backstrom is a fun collection of Backstrom's insights and experiences related to finding joy within our life and circumstances.
Crazy Joy begins with Backstrom introducting herself and a bit about who she is and why she wrote this book. Right off the bat, she tells the reader about her challenges and how she has chosen to see better things in the midst of them many times. Throughout the book, Backstrom invites readers to be who God created them to be and not to live life to meet other people's expectations. She encourages people to see their strengths and not to compare themselves with other people in real life or on social media. Most of all, she encourages readers to find the joy in the midst of all the messes in life.
Crazy Joy is refreshing in that Backstrom is honest and up front about who she is. I like that she is that way. She invites readers to be themselves and to love themselves as they are--as well as their friends. Each chapter ends with some take-aways that help readers apply Backstrom's thoughts to their own lives. There are a handful of cuss words in the book so this isn't squeaky clean for those who are looking for that in this book. Instead the author keeps it real and relatable--I think it is a book that many of us can relate to. She talks about her thoughts regarding the pandemic and how she is learning to go back into society after living secluded for awhile. I think this would be a good book for a book club to talk about as well as one to read on your own.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions within this review are my own.
Backstrom shares her own life stories as she encourages us in our pursuit of joy. She admits she is not an expert in the field but, as a seasoned traveler, invites us along on the journey.
This book is not instruction from the Bible but rather a dive into Backstrom's life. She shares many personal stories to illustrate her strategy for enjoying life. Some of the stories are funny and some of them I failed to understand their significance. She is honest in her comments, often using what would have been considered swear words a generation ago. She also uses a bit of humor along the way. To have inner peace, for example, Backstrom says, “Therapy, psych meds, Jesus, Oreos; it may take a little of each.” (1231/2640) She is free in noting that she has been in therapy for years. (1090/2640)
Why pursue joy? As Backstrom learned, “It nurtures a spirit of defiance in the face of crushing adversity. It reminds your soul it's not time to quit, not now, and it keeps you fighting.” (2456/2640) It's worth the risk, she encourages.
This is a book for readers who like lessons derived from life experiences rather than Bible exposition. It would especially appeal to career age or young married people not so familiar with the Bible.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
"Because the beauty of joy isn't found in a garden. It doesn't grow in neat little rows. It's found in the crevices, the cracks, the chaos. Like flowers...but a little more wild."
This is the first book by MK that I've read and you better believe I'll be chasing down her backlist! This reads like a fun conversation between friends. I completely busted up laughing multiple times and found myself nodding to a lot of what she shares! I can see her ADHD coming through in the way she writes but I totally enjoyed it! All of these crazy stories that she manages to tie together at the end of each chapter where it all comes together and makes perfect sense! I love it!! I especially appreciate the soul probing questions at the end of each chapter. It really made me apply these thoughts and ideas into my life now right where I am.
"I've spent a lot of time searching for joy in the future. I made joy a future tense term instead of a present tense one."
"And you want to know what else I believe self-compassion is? I think it's having clarity on what joy is for me. Not what I've been told it is. Not what I think it should be."
So many great gems! I've highlighted a ton in this book! I'm already buying a physical copy for me, my friends, and family! I highly recommend this book!!! What are ya'all waiting for?! Go Go Go!! Buy it! Read it! Love it!! Thank you NetGalley and Worthy Publishing for this e-book! Review is all me!
Crazy Joy is a fantastic book that will make you take a funny yet hard look at your method of gaining joy in your life. She provides many life reminders that many people overlook and tend to forget. She adds just enough humor to keep the book entertaining. She knows when to make it serious as well. She is honest about her journey to obtaining crazy joy in her life.
I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't remember the last time they experienced absolute joy in their life. While I wouldn't call it a guide per se, I would call it an open discussion opportunity to help you create your path to joy in your life.
Bestselling Author Mary Katherine Backstrom's (Holy Hot Mess) latest Crazy Joy: Finding Wild Happiness In A World That's Upside Down looks at society's view on what happiness is and if it is a destination, and what joy is. The humor in the book is nice, and makes the book easy to read, where one could read multiple chapters or read one a day like a devotional. However, if one is looking for Biblical references or truths, you will find little here, even though it is from a Christian imprint. This could have been written by any celebrity (besides the one chapter) not knowing she was a Christian or a religious person. For an in-depth review, visit my blog at : https://lancewrites.wordpress.com/202...
I randomly picked this up from the “new” section at the library. After I looked it up, I saw it’s classed as a Christian book and actually almost decided not to read it thinking it would be preachy. But luckily there were only a few religious references and, for the most part, reflected on the author’s life experiences. I liked the tone of voice of her writing but struggled to really get into the book and connect to it. All of the chapters seemed very disjointed and random. It’s only 215 pages though so not a big commitment. 2.5 stars but rounding up
Mary Katherine starts each chapter starts with an anecdote that will leave you wonder where she's going with it but these little personal stories always end up making an interesting and often unusual or counter-intuitive point. "Crazy Joy" is a book that will stay with you for a long time after you've put it down, making you think about what you just read. And actually, I think Mary Katherine is right: Don't pursue happiness. Choose joy instead.
I highly recommend Mary Katherine Backstrom's new book, Crazy Joy: Finding Wild Happiness In A Word That's Upside Down.
She reminders her readers if they are looking for a sense of joy, they need to go search for it. At times, we (at least me) feel joy is unattainable. Mary Katherine comforts her readers stating ," There is no way God made this big, round world and left you and me on it, alone."
One of my favorite parts in the book, she calls "Tour Guide Takeaways." It pos3s readers questions to think about and how you would respond in specific situations. By the time I thought to about answers, I questioned if I had already joy and had just misplaced it!
"So when it's hard to show up for the sake of others, do me a favor. Love yourself enough to acknowledge your needs, and love yourself enough to meet them."
If you loved this book by Mary Katherine, look for her two previous publications, Mom Babble and Holy Hot Mess.
Just received my copy a few hours ago! I’m about 85% through and loving every bit of it. This is an honest and uplifting collection of stories, anecdotes and advice. The journey to finding and embracing joy is so relevant after years of pandemic stress and life stressors. This is a great read!
Crazy Joy by Mary Katherine Backstrom ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I thought this was a Christian living book, but I was wrong. It was more like a really long blog about joy with a small sprinkling of scripture thrown in. It wasn’t bad, and her writing was entertaining, it just wasn’t what I was expecting.
I don't know how she does it, but MK tells the best stories in such a relatable and poignant way. She makes you feel like you're sitting down talking with a close friend who loves you enough to speak truth into your life. I love how each chapter has multiple, unrelated stories, yet she brings them together to drive home each point about joy. Thank you, Mary Katherine Backstrom for you vulnerability, transparency, and authenticity.
Backstrom writes in a friendly fashion but I couldn't relate very well. I did enjoy her questions at the end of each chapter, that is where I found the most growth for myself.
Crazy Joy is the second book I’ve read by Mary Katherine Backstroke. (I've also read her 2021 book, Holy Hot Mess.) I appreciate her writing style. Her conversational tone is packed with fun, wit, and whimsy. But the lighthearted atmosphere certainly doesn’t diminish the depth and value of her guidance.
In this book, MK helps readers discover ways to find peace, contentment, and joy by sharing her personal experiences and insight. And reading it is fun and entertaining. The Tour Guide Takeaway sections, serving as somewhat of a review at the close of each chapter, are a nice touch.
First Lines (Introduction): As we set off together on this journey to joy, there’s something you need to know. I’m just a little bit…crazy. Genre: Christian self-help, Non-fiction

Backstrom feels like the girl you want to hang out with—fun, witty, life of the party, and filled with crazy joy. Just by being near her, you get to experience joy. This book tackles hard subjects but always brings the reader back to the topic of joy, including “joy tour guide” questions at the end of each chapter. A great read. Highly recommend.
In Crazy Joy, Mary Katherine Backstrom revealed the true meaning of happiness and how fleeting it is and how instead we can choose to follow joy. She explained in her book how she suffers from OCD, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar 2. She compared it to Pokémon cards and how you never know which one will you get. She went into detail about how one day she took on a politician over Twitter and he claimed to be a Christian. She tweeted to him how in 18 months she was running for office and going to take over his seat. It went viral and caused herself some backlash. Her business colleague called her in asking her about what direction her career was going to go. They were a faith-based publisher and they didn’t know she was going to go political. She also didn’t tell her husband and he wasn’t happy when he found out what she tweeted. A lot of stories in the book, she described it as a conversation with her therapist to relay the message. She explained how she was on a quest for happiness and the next toy that promises to provide with happiness. In the book, she wants to help readers to break through the cycle and to achieve crazy true joy.
I would recommend this awesome book about happiness and discovering joy and contentment in our daily lives. I immensely loved her humor and how open she was in explaining that some days is feels like the different characters in Christopher Robin popular stories from Winnie the Pooh. I liked the story about Publix and the pecan pies and the trouble she went to at first to hid that she purchased one from there instead of making her own. I also enjoyed her sharing the story about D.A.R.E. and Scruff McGruff and how he discussed with kids in the 90’s about drugs, guns, and protecting yourself from strangers. She even described how she told on her father for drinking alcohol and mixed humor into the story. I also liked how she enclosed tour guide takeaways at the end of each chapter.
To say I am obsessed with Mary Katherine Backstrom would be the understatement of the century. I stumbled across her first book, Holy Hot Mess, earlier this summer and devoured it within 48 hours. I was beyond excited to receive early access to Crazy Joy and have been soaking this one up bc I didn’t want it to end! Reading a MKB book is like having your best friend tell you it’s going to be ok, and you’re not alone in your crazy, on repeat.
My biggest take away from this book is that life doesn’t have to be perfect to achieve joy. I used to think that my anxiety, my fears, my mess, my frustrations with my children not listening to me, were all keeping me from achieving joy. If it wasn’t pretty and perfect, how could I be joyful? But what I’ve found throughout my time with this book is that those things ARE the joy. I can take anti-anxiety meds, get a little too cross with my kids bc I’m exhausted (bc I stayed up reading this book lol), and there is still joy to be found in our perfectly imperfect lives. I especially loved the pop culture references such as Steel Magnolias and Stranger Things, which further makes me feel like I’m just talking to my bestie.
Us moms have a lot of pressures put on us every single day. We are trying to find our people, take care of our people, and love Jesus in the meantime. Our worlds can be pulled in so many different directions. But this book brought me a little more centered and helped me remember … the joy are the beautiful things God has given me. My husband, my child, my life. Things might turn upside down sometimes bc, as MKB says, trauma doesn’t discriminate, but with the help of anxiety meds, our village, the joy we find in every day mundane things, we can do the hard things.
Crazy Joy by Mary Katherine Backstrom is a Christian Living book published by Worthy, a division of Hachette Book Group. Ms. Backstrom is best known to many for her videos and candid writing on family, faith, and mental illness. The intention of this book is to persuade the reader to embark on a journey to a life of Crazy Joy.
Crazy Joy is organized into twelve, easy-to-read chapters with each chapter ending Tour Guide Takeaways. I loved many of the quotes at the beginning of and scattered throughout each chapter. My favorite was "The beauty of joy isn't found in a garden. It doesn't grow in neat little rows. It's found in the crevices, the cracks, and the chaos." - Mary Katherine Backstrom.
The book is filled with many stories of her personal life, and several of the anecdotes are amusing and relatable. However, it's also obvious that she's much younger than me... and my children (all in their 40s). Backstrom uses many cultural references that are meaningless to me, but I did not take the time to research them. Even movies from the 80s that "Everyone" has seen are ones I never finished watching. ("Labyrinth" is the exception. I loved that movie.) Because of the cultural differences that are time-related and having a different mindset than mine, I simply did not connect with her writing.
I didn't dislike the book, but it wasn't a page-turner that I devoured. I am more likely to suggest it to someone in their 20s or 30s, especially if they relate more to personal experience with a touch of faith included.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the marketing agency. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Crazy Joy Finding Wild Happiness in a World That's Upside Down by Mary Katherine Backstrom Pub Date 30 Aug 2022 Worthy Publishing, Worthy Books Christian
I am reviewing a copy of Crazy Joy: Finding Wild Happiness in a World That's Upside Down through Worthy Publishing and Netgalley:
Happiness is considered a destination, but the destination is constantly moving. It changes when we get married, find that dream job, move away from home, have a baby, build a dream house, etc. We are promised that a happy life is tied to these milestones.
What if society has it wrong? What if happiness is not a destination?
Mary Katherine paints a picture of a different life—one bursting with a force that is far more sustainable and vibrant: joy with her trademark candor as well as her hilarious storytelling.
With Crazy Joy readers can be helped in the following ways:
Crazy Joy invites readers to embark on a counter-cultural journey toward a life filled to the brim with contentment, humor, and most importantly, Crazy Joy.
"I want to make sure the things I'm pursuing in the name of joy on this finite Earth are the things that can go with me into eternity." - Mary Katherine Backstrom
I was lucky enough to get an early release copy of this book and I can honestly say I enjoyed reading every word. MK Backstrom has quickly become one of my favorite writers - in the sense that she is so relatable, funny, and witty. She has a way of telling little stories about her life that come full circle and turn into a learning moment without being condescending. She can make you laugh and cry all within the same chapter, while also teaching you how she has found so much joy in her own life. I found so many moments in this book that I could absolutely relate to or take what she is saying and put into practice in my own life. I would recommend this book to anyone because I think every single person out there can find something special to take away from it. If you are looking for a way to find joy in this crazy world be live in, then this book is most definitely for you, but even if that doesn't seem appealing to you, I promise you that you will find yourself enJOYing this book because it is just THAT good. Do yourself a favor and try it out! Give MK a chance and allowing yourself the pleasure of reading her words ... you won't regret it!
This book gave an honest insight into how one can find joy within themselves and through their relationships with others. MK's stories were seamlessly woven with the messages of each chapter. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter were quality loveliness, and her summations of stories not her own were hilarious and effective. Reading this book, message or no message, brought me joy, so thanks, MK.
Along the way, though, she dropped these little truth bombs, these little nuggets of gold for you to reflect on at your will. This is one of those books that I would buy and actually put sticky notes in, because her tour guide takeaways at the end of each chapter are great for reflection and I'm sure would be beneficial to look at time and time again, to assess and reevaluate where I'm at in my life and how I'm choosing to pursue (or not) the things that bring me joy.
If you've even kind of struggled with where your current life is, with your mental health, with feeling like you've been in a slump or a fog, read this book. Full stop. If nothing else, you should get a giggle or two out of it, and sometimes that's enough. It certainly has been for me.
Crazy Joy was a journey into myself I didn't know I needed. Mary Katherine Backstrom did it again with such a beautifully poignant, engaging, and humorous book I will forever be thankful I read.
"Don't stop crossing bridges, friend. They carry you deeper into the land of joy. But inspect those bridges. Engage in the required maintenance. If you find that the foundation isn't there, bless it and let it go.
While you may not have been in any way responsible for your past hurts, you are responsible for your healing." Mary Katherine Backstom; Crazy Joy
Sometimes the journey to finding joy seems so confusing, yet MK helps shed light on a smaller, more meaningful truth behind joy; it's readily available AND attainable for all of us. Her words felt like sitting for coffee or a few glasses of wine with a beloved girlfriend pondering the meaning of all that is inherently wonderful, even if it doesn't seem to be at first glance. Those are the moments that matter.
This book is perfect for anyone yearning for some moments of comforting reflection lightened by fun tales of the wild ride we all call life <3 This book is a must to keep by your bedside or favorite comfy couch spot.

Crazy Joy is a Christian Living book by author Mary Katherine Backstrom. Ms. Backstrom is best known for her viral videos and candid writing on family, faith, and mental illness. The author’s purpose is to persuade the reader to embark on a journey to the Crazy Joy life.
Crazy Joy is organized into twelve, easy-to-read chapters. Plus, the introduction is titled “Joy in the Journey.” Crazy Joy wasn’t my cup of tea, nor was it what I was expecting. However, the redeeming feature is the Tour Guide Takeaways at the end of each chapter.
I give Crazy Joy 3*/5*.
