Mindless Fun!

3.5 stars

Her Last Breath is a psychological thriller about the murder of newlyweds and the ex-wife suspected of the crime.

When Erin, a recently divorced former attorney, finds herself inexplicably at her ex-husband's house in the middle of the night, she is in for a shock as she finds both the bodies of her ex and his new wife. Erin can’t remember what she was doing at their house and soon finds herself the number suspect in their murders. She now must fight to prove her innocence.

Even though this is the first book in The Charlotte Pierce series, Charlotte isn’t featured much. She narrates a few chapters, and she is in the background investigating the crime, but this is much more of Erin’s story. Erin is a bit of a trainwreck but so much fun to watch! As a former lawyer, she doesn’t know much about the law and makes some stupid decisions. However, she is sympathetic and very likable.

There are few other characters whose POVs are shared, but they don’t make much of an impact.

This is an entertaining popcorn thriller read. I was sucked in immediately and couldn’t look away from the mess of Erin’s character. There are some good surprising twists and turns, and one is especially juicy! I read this on a stormy day, and it was the perfect mindless diversion that I needed to escape the weather. I don’t know if I care enough about Charlotte Pierce to keep up with this series, but I might read book #2 to see if it is just as entertaining as book #1.

I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway.

My first Kate Gable novel and it certainly did not disappoint. A truly compelling and engaging read and an excellent start to a new detective series. I found it incredibly difficult to put this down, and if I hadn’t had such a busy week, I would have finished this in one sitting no bother! You’re kept sufficiently on your toes with all the twists and turns, where I was questioning whodunnit right up to the very end.

I am absolutely looking forward to release of the next instalment in the series. 4.5 rounded up to 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a a light thriller/mystery that reads very quickly. However, I am absolutely baffled by the great reviews it has. Even though this the first book in a series about Detective Charlotte Fin, she is a relatively minor character. The main character of the book is Erin, a woman who finds herself at the murder scene of her ex husband and his new pregnant wife. Erin finds herself under suspicion for their murders. Erin ,who is a former lawyer, does a lot of stupid things and doesn't seem to understand how the law works. The author also doesn't seem to understand basic police procedures. For example, after Erin asks for a lawyer one of the police investigators still attempts to interrogate her in order to elicit a confession. In fact, Detective Fin gets angry at her partner for not getting a confession even though she has asked for an attorney. This happens a few more times, with the Detectives continually trying to get Erin to confess before her attorney shows up. This would never happen in reality as once a suspect asks for an attorney police have to stop the interrogation. If they continue, the information they receive will likely be ruled inadmissible in court. Police detectives are very conscious of this fact and they would not continue as it could ruin the case. Those are just a few of the contrivances found in this book. There were also a lot of things that characters did that made no sense. I read a lot of mystery thrillers and am willing to suspend disbelief and enjoy plot twists, but the ending of the book was unsatisfying, overly dramatic and just plain implausible. Someone described this a "popcorn thriller” and if one is looking for something mindlessly entertaining to just pass time this might be for them.

Detective Charlotte thought she would free of difficult and mysterious cases until she is the lead on a double murder and the suspect is the ex wife. There’s so many facets of who did it and what’s true and what’s not that it kept me engaged and excited for more from this new series

3.5 stars-- WHAT SHE DID aka LAST BREATH is the first instalment in Kate Gable’s contemporary, adult CHARLOTTE PIERCE mystery, suspense, thriller series focusing on Detective Charlotte Pierce.

Told from three first person perspectives (Charlotte, Will, Erin) WHAT SHE DID follows in the aftermath of the murder of attorney Derek Bryson and his pregnant wife Susannah. The only suspect is Derek’s ex-wife and former attorney Erin Lowry Bryson, a woman who cannot recall anything in the hours prior to the murders, having been found in the house, covered in blood. As the police struggled to make a case against Derek’s ex-wife, Erin discovers that everything about her own life with Derek has been predicated upon a number of lies, and there is a distinct possibility that she is the pawn in a much bigger game than she could have ever imagined. What ensues is the search for the truth, as Erin begins to interfere in the investigation, and her TSTL (too stupid to live ) actions threaten any possiblity of a not guilty outcome.

As the story line progresses, we are introduced to Derek’s law partner Christopher Flynn, attorney Sandra Pullman, private investigator Shawn Nieves, Detective Charlotte Pierce and Detective William Torch. The story line focused moreso on, and was told mostly from Erin Lowry Bryson’s point of view, and therefore, some of the information and evidence comes from a suspect, and not the police investigation. I think the author should tell more of the story from Charlotte’s point of view, as this is a series focusing, first and foremost, on Detective Charlotte Pierce, and the cases to which she will be assigned. I was a little confused thinking the series was about Erin Lowry.

Kate Gable pulls the reader into a story of suspense and mystery, murder and vengeance, betrayal and discovery. The premise is intriguing; the characters are energetic, real and charismatic.

I could NOT ! put this book down starting with page one I was immediately hooked and I kept my nose buried in the pages till the end. Detective Charlotte Pierce was a dynamo in figuring out the pieces of the puzzle and how Erin fit in. I thought I had a few things figured out and I was dead wrong so much for my detective skills. I truly can't wait for more of the new series.

Compelling

I found the writing and characters compelling, I just had to keep reading. It is a little confusing at first because the narrative goes backward and forward in time without giving dates, but it's easy enough to keep track. Narration switches between Erin, Charlotte and Will, but is mostly Erin.

Two people are murdered in their bed. The main suspect claims she can't remember how she came to be in their house. Is it as simple as it seems?

The story I read was Last Breath with Charlotte Pierce as the lead detective. I've noticed that there are two other versions Her Last Breath and What I Did with Detective Charlie Finn as the main character in some of them. This point is worthy of a mention because the story seems subtly edited in this newer version.

There were a few things that bothered me:
Let's start with the ending - it was too convoluted for my liking. I would have worked the story differently. The story had already wound around so many angles that it needed to wrap more cleanly.
The main character was lost in the plot. Charlotte/Charlie had less than a third of the screen time despite being the person who is the most likely to be continuing in the series.
The solution felt rather like bait and switch: a rabbit being pulled out of a magician's hat instead of the expected pigeon.
I'd prefer an omniscient narrator to a revolving point of view shared by several characters. Moreover, the shifts in time bogged the story down.

There were a few things I liked:
When the main suspect doesn't know if she is innocent or not, the plotline has so many places it could go and the author used that to her advantage.
The detective was not a "straight off the shelf" police officer. There was a degree of depth to her character. She had an intriguing backstory.
This book wasn't your typical police procedural - which, now that I think about it, is a con as well as a pro.

Overall, I liked the story. (But another edit wouldn't hurt.)

I won this novel as a Goodreads giveaway.

I think I got my hopes up with the average review being 4.5 stars. I kept reading because in my experience, books that have a slow build sometimes get really crazy and intense in the last half or so. That was not true for this book. I didn't know who to root for because everyone in this book is so stupid, especially Erin. My initial issue with connecting to this book was the fact that POV is constantly jumping but the timeline jumps as well and there is no label at all to help the reader keep track of the timeline. The unlikeable characters just made it worse.

Even though it’s the first book of a detective series, the detective takes a back seat in this book. It had its twists and turns but it wasn’t as intoxicating as I feel mystery / thrillers should be. I do plan to finish the series and hope it only gets better.

I read this book as "Last Breathe" and thought at the time the title didn't really fit the story. Then when I went to review it on Goodreads it had a different title. That should be an indication as the police officer who is the main character in this coming series is only a minor character in the book. That said I'm glad because the main character, Erin, a lawyer who finds herself at the murder scene of her ex husband and his new pregnant wife. Erin finds herself under suspicion for their murders. I got so frustrated with here and the really stupid thing she does. The relationship between here and the policewoman and man handling the case is questionable on police policy and procedures. The ending was never really addressed, only she found the evidence - no what happened then??? I find it doubtful I will try anymore books in this series as felt it was waste of my time.

This page turner is suspenseful, mysterious, fast moving with lots of twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end. Double murders, an ex-wife, and a palette full of secrets in Palm Valley, CA, where crime is nonexistent, but the murder of a famous attorney and his wife threatens this tenuous equilibrium of this quiet and safe neighborhood. This story probes the depths of love, heartache, psychological effects of the mind, and a heart pounding pace that continued to increase. Detective Charlotte Pierce and her partner Detective William (Will) Torch were called to the crime scene to investigate the murder of an attorney and his pregnant wife. Low and behold, the person who called in the murder was none other than the attorney’s ex-wife, Erin Lowry Bryson, who was also covered in blood. Erin Lowery Bryson is an unemployed attorney as well as a recent divorcée who is distraught from the divorce, having two miscarriages, and stalking her ex-husband on social media. Why was Erin at her ex-husband’s house? Why was Erin covered in blood? Who could have done this horrendous crime? Was it Erin or someone else? The detectives discovered that this case is far from being straightforward—leading them to several suspects. Will Erin be the the main suspect? When you think you have it all figured out, then BAM, another curveball is thrown at you! If you find a book that grabs you and doesn’t want to let you go, then this one is for you. Kate Gable creates a world, plot, and characters that linger long after the last sentence of the last page. I recommend you get this book! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

I got this book free from a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

I thought the book was a quick read. Some of the writing seemed a little fast and forced. Like summing up a lot of details into just one or two quick sentences. I liked the storyline, but I thought that the character of Erin could have had a little more depth and there were some details to her story (especially her forgotten evening) that could have been fleshed out a little better. I'm not sure why it was the first in the series of the Charlotte Pierce books because the focus was more on Erin. I liked the way that the timeline jumped because it provided back story, but it was very confusing. Possibly add dates on the chapters so that we know when things are occurring. There were a couple times I was lost, only to realize this was a past event, not a current one. Overall I liked the book and it was generally a good detective story. Not my typical choice of book, but enjoyable none the less. Would like to see a little more believability in the details in future books, but I would pick up some others in the series if I was looking for an easy detective/mystery book.

The sign of a good mystery writer is when you haven't a clue who did it and even though everything pointed at Erin, I knew she didn't do it, but had no idea who did or why, as you work your way through the book you are more confused as to who did murder Erin's ex husband and his new wife, everything points at her but she doesn't even remember why or how she got there.

For Charlotte and Will this was a really hard case to crack as Erin was the primary suspect but neither of them believed that she had done it, but if it wasn't her then who and why? Nothing added up and everyone seemed to be on Erin's side, to prove her innocent but they were no nearer to who had committed the murders.

I could say so much more about this book but wont, you have to read it yourself and see if you can work it out! I can usually work out who had done it but not this time, great writing, great plot, great story, its a must read.

Brilliant start to this series I cant wait for more! a really compelling read, you just cant put it down!

Raced through this.
A simple enough plot, told in a minimal style, enriched by the well-developed main characters and their interactions with each other.
Erin discovers the dead bodies of her ex-husband, Derek, and Susannah, the woman he left her for. She has no memory of how she got to their house but she is sure she didn’t kill them. Or did she?
The story is told from three points of view - Erin, and the two detectives on the case, Will and Charlotte. The style is minimalist - short sentences, and often with only one to a paragraph. Its a style I like as I tend to skip read pages of (unnecessary to the story) descriptions.
Although I found it hard to identify with Erin, her devotion to husband Derek, her breakdown at his deception and devastation when she learns Susannah is pregnant, all help to make the situations she finds herself in, and her reactions to them, believable.
We are given hints to more intriguing things about Erin, Will and Charlotte in their back stories, which I hope are expanded on in later books. Because I definitely want to read more about them.

What She Did by Kate Gabel is an awesome thriller! I was hooked from the very beginning. This is full of surprising twists and turns. Erin finds herself in her ex-husbands home with no recollection of why she is there or how she got there. She discovers the murdered bodies of her ex and his new pregnant wife. Charlotte Pierce is the detective investigating the case, but she has secrets of her own. Told in the 1st person by Erin and the 2 detectives assigned to the case. That gets a little confusing and I found myself having to go check the beginning of the chapter to see whose perspective I was reading. It was interesting to be able to read their thoughts and gain more insight to the story. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I won this from a Goodreads giveaway and am so glad I did. Thank you Goodreads!

Erin is happily married to Derek, who is an attorney. Erin has finished law school and was a lawyer, but quit to stay home and be a mother. They have a nice house and a great life. Derek had to go away on business and Erin decides to surprise him at it is their anniversary. But, when she gets to the hotel, the door is answered by a woman and Derek is in the room with her!

Now Erin finds herself on the way to a house at night. Not knowing why she is going there or who lives there, she finds herself on the doorstep of her ex-husbands house that he shares with his new wife. When she finds the door open, she enters and finds both Derek and his new wife dead.

Now she is the main suspect in their murder. But, how did she get to their house and why was she there?

Great twists and turns!

This is a quick read that catches you at the start, but it may be Charlotte #1 in a series except Charlotte doesn't even enter the book until after Chapter 10. The story starts with Erin going into her ex's home and finding him and his new wife dead. Erin doesn't remember how or why she's there, but she calls it in to the police and becomes suspect #1.

It moves along quickly, partly because I ended up skimming lots of pages that had absolutely nothing to do with the story, as the reader bounces from inside one character's head (view point) to the next. Erin seems like the main character, but it's a Charlotte mystery with view points not only from them about others. Not confusing but a bit erratic.

Still, the story was engaging, and it was easy to get attached to Erin and want to see who really done it.

Received as an ARC. I blew through this very quickly! Erin is devastated when she finds out her ex husband and the woman he was having an affair with are expecting. It shatters Erin as she had 2 miscarriages and is still reeling from the pain and heart ache. Erin secretly stalks her ex and discovers they're expecting.
Erin tries to drink away the pain only to find herself some how walking Thru their house in the middle of the night. She ends up in their bedroom where she realizes that they have been murdered! She calls the police only to become the suspect in their murders. She's tin for the fight of her life. How can she make anyone believe she's innocent when she doesn't remember how she got to their house and why.

What She Did introduces Detectives Charlotte Pierce and William Torch who are investigating the double murder of Derik and Susannah Bryson and their unborn child. Their bodies are discovered by his ex-wife, Erin Lowrey, who is under investigation for the murders. However, the investigation is complicated by the past between Erin and Will who still have feelings for each other. The book is presented not only from the perspective of both detectives but also from the unique viewpoint of the suspect, Erin. This book is a superb psychological thriller with amazing characters, mystery, and unexpected twists. I highly recommend this well written and addictive book!

First book I've read by Kate Gable. I hovered between 4 and 5 stars--four because I figured out "whodunnit" and why the MC had lost her memory about half way through the book, and 5 because there were twists I didn't see coming. I was disappointed that there wasn't more development of the relationship between the MC and her college flame, but this is the first book in the series. Perhaps, that storyline will be developed in subsequent books. These days, any book I bother to finish gets 4 or 5 stars automatically, as my stack of "not worth my precious time" is growing. If you enjoy puzzles, some fairly complex characters, and relationships with histories, I would recommend this book.

Good

This is a good murder mystery with a dash of romance. I am not sure why it is a Charlotte Pierce mystery though as I felt the focus wasn’t really on her or her abilities, but rather the crime and Erin trying to figure out what happened to herself and the ex. The romantic component was intriguing though I don’t understand the ending part. There are multiple POV which did confuse at times, especially the personal asides for detective Pierce. The next book is alluded to a bit with the mystery and middle school aged memories. Sounds interesting!

AT 15% I REALIZED I DON'T CARE FOR THE WRITING STYLE TOO CONFUSING; I HOPED IT WOULD GET TO THE POINT I KNEW THE WHO & WHY. IT HAD 3POV AND I COULDN'T CONNECT TO ANY OF THEM. I WONDERED WAS THIS A BETTY BRODERICK GOING ON. I DIDN'T LIKE THE 3 MAIN CHARACTERS THEIR PERSONALITIES ARE ALL KINDA SAD EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM IS DEPRESSING. THE ENDING WAS UNFULFILLING. I SEE THIS AS ANOTHER UNENDING SERIES WHERE IT JUST SORTA ENDS THEN YOU HAVE TO BUY THE NEXT BOOK AND IT SORTA ENDS AND YOU BUY THE NEXT BOOK . . . . . SIGH. ;<

The title of this book on Amazon is Last Breath. I wasn't a huge fan of the Kaitlyn Carr series by Kate Gable so figured I'd try this series. The book itself is told by each person and 80% of it by character Erin. Charlotte and her partner Will are almost side notes here so not sure why this is the first in Charlotte's series.

Erin's ex and his new wife are dead in their bed found by Erin who doesn't remember how she got there. The story revolves around Erin and Charlotte's suspision that she is the killer.
There is a twist but you can see it coming.

The action in this story starts from the very first sentence: "Something bad is about to happen." How did Erin know? The author does a good job of keeping secrets until they need to be revealed. This encourages the reader to be totally involved in the book. The storyline is good, but you just want Erin to do things a bit differently, however that's not who she is. She feels the need to clear herself, and that presents unexpected dangers. A lot of history that she never knew is revealed and it makes the story.

Good story, although the main character does everything one shouldn't, and being a lawyer should have acted accordingly. Quick read, finished in two sittings. I would recommend the book to others and would read more of this author.

SUBSCRIPT - This book is also out with the title What She Did - very confusing. Also, incorrectly titled as a Charlotte Finn Book 1 in the series, but the character is actually Charlotte Pierce? Showed up in my books list as two separate books. Since the one on my reader had the Last Breath cover, that is the one I kept in my 'read' list.

Erin Lowry/Bryson, unemployed and depressed found the dead bodies of Derek (her ex), and his wife Susannah on their bed drenched in blood - brutally murdered!
But, why and what, at the first place, was she doing at their house at midnight? Hence, she’s the prime suspect in this double homicide.. but, was she really?
WHAT SHE DID is an intriguing and suspenseful thriller that I would recommend to any thrill-seeking readers!

Former wife finds herself in the house of her ex husband and his current wife. They are dead and she slips and falls in the blood. She calls 911. She is the main suspect and she does not know why she is there. Charlotte Pierce is the detective assigned to the case and is under pressure to solve it. The evidence does not line up and there is more going on that meets the eye. This is a page turning thriller that is hard to put down.

This story begins in an unusual way, and I liked that. Erin comes upon her X-husband and his new wife, who is also pregnant. They have been murdered. Erin is the suspect, and she has no good explanation for anything that happened that night. This is a great suspense read and everyone has secrets. This book is hard to put down, and you will keep rooting for Erin. Did she, do it? Check it out.........
