A Haunting Journey into the Worlds of Voodoo and Druidry

Joni had always been fascinated by the history of her family’s old, antebellum plantation.

Her ancestor’s journals were filled with stories, many involving two slave girls, the older of whom was deeply involved in the “red magic” of the Bokors.

When Messalina returns from the grave on a quest of vengeance, Joni must confront the wickedness of her own family’s past, while also embracing a truth even more ancient—that she is descended from a line of Druids.

Joni is the only one who stands between Messalina and her insidious plans.

Druidess takes readers on a thrilling journey into the world of Celtic and Native American mythology, Voodoo, and an eternal realm where all magic—good and evil alike—has its origins. Druidess is filled with shocking plot twists, compelling characters, and features a strong female hero. Druidess introduces the Gates of Eden (GoE) Universe. It is a prequel to both the Druid Legacy (Elijah Wadsworth) and the Voodoo Legacy (Annabelle Mulledy). Monroe’s Druidess is sure to keep readers enthralled from start to finish.

Theophilus Monroe is a fantasy author with a knack for real-life characters whose supernatural experiences speak to the pangs of ordinary life. After earning his Ph.D. in Theology, he decided that academic treatises that no one will read (beyond other academics) was a dull way to spend his life. So, he began using his background in religious studies to create new worlds and forms of magic-informed by religious myths, ancient and modern-that would intrigue readers, inspire imaginations, and speak to real-world problems in fantastical ways.

Druidess (The Wadsworth Legacy ) was a great read by Theophilus Monroe. Joni had always been fascinated by the history of her family’s old, antebellum plantation. Her ancestor’s journals were filled with stories. Many of the stories involved two slave girls, the oldest was deeply involved in the “red magic” of the Bokors. Messalina returns from the grave on a quest of vengeance which leads Joni to confront the wickedness of her family’s past. She must also embrace the fact that she is descended from a line of Druids. Joni is the only person standing between Messalina and her insidious plans. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.

Following Joni's story and how vengeance is never right. Joni reads her ancestor's journals not really believing, until there is not choice and she goes back to find answers. Will the answers help? Can she stop the evil? They believe in her, but what happens when everything seems to go wrong?

This book is an introduction to the Gates of Eden universe and the main character is fourteen year old Joni Campbell, who lives with her parents on a plantation that has been in her father’s family for centuries. She has been reading her ancestor’s journals and found out about the disappearance of two slave girls, sisters Isabelle (12) and Messalina (16). As she reads on, she finds that Messalina was mixed up in voodoo and magic, and had become a Caplata, wanting revenge on all those who owned slaves and treated them badly. She had made a deal with Baron Samedi, a Loa, to be able to raise the dead and use them for her vengeance. She has the soul of her sister Isabelle captured in a locket she has chained to her wrist. She hopes to bring her sister back to life, when she herself rises again. The ghost like persona of Isabelle comes to give Joni a warning, as Messalina returns from her grave and seeks the power of a female descendant of the Campbell line. What Joni doesn’t know, is that she and her mother have ancient magic within them and when she grabs the protective item from the slave quarters that Isabelle directed her to, her magic is triggered. She cannot do magic, but she is actually a ‘siphon’, someone who can take in any magic directed at her or from touching another magic user, then redirecting it to where she needs to. Unfortunately, she has had no training whatsoever in magic and it is something her father completely disbelieves in!
Jodi finds out more about the truth of her ancestors and why she is the first actual female descendant in over one hundred and fifty years! Her ancestors in the Campbell line have carried out horrific deeds to ensure no female was born or lived, to be able to fulfil Messalina’s insidious plans. She found references to a Choctaw called Thundershield and so she tries to find any descendants and manages to message one called Roger Thundershield, whose image is of cats, lots and lots of cats. He agrees to come and see her in about an hour, so isn’t far away from her family plantation. He is actually only sixteen, not the ninety nine as per his profile details, and tells her more of the danger she faces and helps to heal her mother who got hit by magic from Messalina. He is a Shaman and explains that she comes from a line of Druids and is prophesied to have an important role in the future. First though, she must ensure Messalina is defeated and doesn’t manage to get her magic to power her army. It has everything you can imagine, from Celtic and Native American myths and legends, to voodoo, necromancy, zombies and more. We get to see the early life of Joni Campbell and also Elijah Wadsworth and even Annabelle Mulledy, who readers may recognise from some of the author’s other series. But if you haven’t read any others, this makes a great jumping off point to start with. A great read of just the perfect length, giving loads of background information on all of the characters. Definitely a book I would recommend to any who like a mix of magic and myth, as well as any who wanted to know the beginnings of some of their favourite characters in other series from the author! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I read the series about Annabelle Mulledy and Isabelle when they went to an exceptional school (Voodoo Academy) where Annabelle could learn to use her talent. Druidess gives us the back story, and it was so awesome to find out how Joni, Roger, the Choctaw, and Isabelle came to be a support to one another. The book is an exciting mix of drama, supernatural and paranormal action, suspense, a little horror, and some intensely interesting characters. I know these characters from books in related series, and they continue to intrigue me, keep me engaged and make me want to keep reading.

Druidess is a phenomenal ride into the paranormal, supernatural world....and then there is Vodoo and the Baron himself. The storyline is compelling and engaging. I cannot get enough of these characters!.

YA, PN action-adventure, female main character. Audio version.

This story could have been so much better if the author, Theophilus Monroe, had chosen a different voice actor and / or she, the voice actress, had chosen a less whiny interpretation of the words written. I was all I could do to listen through all of it. If Kelley Hazen had done her homework by researching the dilects of the people she was supposed to be portraying, I think she could have delivered a better performance. Voice acting is more than reading words without error. It is drawing a voice-picture for readers of each character by embuing the traits of that character into the portrayal of that voicing. Thundershield sounded more wooden than Americian Chaktaw or from Missouri, and the portrayal of Isabel was nearly intolerable to listen to. If this was supposed to be a story of females overcoming obstacles and / or finding and accepting thier power, then why make them sound so whiny, powerless, and in Isobel's case, close to tears for the entire story?!

I was disturbed that the character Joni had to use someone else to access the power she needed to protect herself or perform other magics. It's one thing to have a teacher's guidance, but unless she learns to form her own connection to magic, it makes Joni seem more like a paracite (like the villian) than a partner. While it is nice that she is part of a team, because it is arrogant (and "mary-sueish") to think one can do everything on thier own right from the beginning, I hope Joni learns in future episodes to form her own connection and to commune directly with the Tree of Life, Nature, Femorian magic, etcetera's energy, herself so she can stand ready to act when needed rather than simply be a rereactive recycler of leftover magical residue. I understand she is 14 at the beginning. Joni needs to learn how to use her mind and body to be an active worker for the side of good as a compliment to her use of magic, which may be in process by the end of this part of the over arching story. Otherwise would imply a powerlessness which is opposite of the idea of a heroine. At this point, Joni reads like the poster girl for codependence, as if she is only half a person, instead of a thinking, confident member of a group or team offering her contribution toward whatever goal. This should come with learning, practice, and maturity which the beginnings of may be implied in part, in the final scene, along with the progression of the romance between Roger Thundershield and Joni Campbell.

Am I wrong in thinking there seems to be a religious aspect to this tale from the admonishment of Joni to Anabel to "remain pure," whatever that means? I don't mind reading religious stories if they are honest enough to say so. Joni can't speak or commune with the source of life herself, but must go through someone else like the Christians do Jesus or a minister, or was needing Isobel to be her link like trainingwheels for Joni until she could figure out how to form the link for herself? The concepts of love and light conquering evil is universal and so is forgiveness lightening our burden of grief from abuse as part of the healing process, so I may be limiting the scope of the author's intended audience or message. I thank the author for ending this eposode on an upbeat, hopeful note.

I also thank Theophilus Monroe for offering this episode for review through Story Origin and look forward to the rest of the story. This has been my honest feedback.

First things first, while Theophilus Monroe nor this book need any kind of introduction at this stage, newcomers to the series are always welcome, this book is exactly what you are looking for, ‘the one who started it all’, the perfect story to enter the “Gates of Eden” verse, be sure to do your chores first… once you enter… you will not be able to leave 😉. Those of you who already know the verse, but have still not coming around to read this prequel, just do it, it will be epic 😊
Finally, those of us who already have wolfed down anything Monroe releases, and still can get enough of it (don’t look at me, I admit voluntary admit it, and… I know am not alone 😉) go back and read the book again, just because its great entertainment…… every single time anew!

“Druidess” blends real elements of classic Celtic mythology, Native American and African-American (VooDoo) mythology with an ingenious fantasy realm of Monroe’s own creation. Joni (MC) fascination with her ante-bellum family history and her ancestor’s journals brings her into a self-discovery quest and puts her in contact with both her own druidic roots and the ‘red magic’ of the Bokors, embodied by Messalina, who has come back from the grave to take revenge on those who wronged her. This is a wonderful contemporary YA fantasy, that brings the “coming of age” trope to a new level, offering an unusual tale of lost and endurance.

“Druidess” by Theophilus Monroe is more than a prequel, is a truly introduction to the “Gates of Eden” universe, is a original world, which loosely borrows Arthurian tropes and transfer them organically into a modern urban fantasy that spans centuries, crossing realms and blurs the boundaries between reality and legend and transforms them into a veritable smørrebrød of action, unexpected twists, wonderful characters and mind-blowing descriptions, garnished with a good dose of magic some sprinkles of mythical lore and some paranormal romance on the side, and served with very well-crafted, with an accurate world building, interesting characters, captivating writing style and carefully editing.

I really enjoyed the introduction to Joni's story and her involvement in the druid legacy. As a child she had always been interested and intrigued by her family's past, however what she read in their old books did not always sit well with her. She knew she could see ghosts, but later found out she had both Formorian as well as druidic blood running through her veins. When Messalina and her sister Isabelle appeared in her life, one as a ghost and one as a caplata, she was forced to intervene. With Isabelle's help she tried to stop the caplata from wreaking the vengeance she had risen from the grave to get. Many years had passed since the siblings had been slaves on the Campbell Plantation in Baton Rouge, where they had been so badly abused, however for Messalina the anger was still fresh and she called what she did justice but Isabelle disagreed and wanted to stop her from allying with the loa known as Baron Samedi to raise their army of undead. Only Joni with her new found powers and the help of Roger a choctaw could Messalina be defeated and sent back to rest in peace before bringing ruin on all of those living today! This is a book full of interesting myths about voodoo and other dark magic as well as the green magic of the druids which I so enjoy reading about.

I absolutely loved this early story of Joni! I haven't read any of the Wadsworth Legacy series, although I have read many other series of Theophilus Monroe's and have come across Joni is her adult life before in the Fomorian series (Another great series if you haven't read it already).

In this prequel, Joni is a 14 year old with no knowledge of her ancestry or what her future may hold either, but when she is visited by another familiar character from yet another series, things start to change for our young MC. She has to start believing in things she never believed were possible. For a 14 year old, she was quite mature and determined, trying to be responsible to help resolve the situation as best she knows how.

I loved the fact that these characters all started here and although I know what happens to them in future series, it was great to see where and how they started out. I am definitely going to go back and read the rest of this series now.

I received a copy from the author, but this review is my own honest one!

As always, Theo delights me with his storytelling. I love how he weaves the story, like a tapestry taking shape until the masterpiece is revealed. This book is where we are introduced to Joni, who discovers she is not your ordinary teen. Enter two sisters, Isabelle and Messilina, one intent on revenge for her abuse as a child, the other intent on stopping her. Together with Roger, Joni and Isabelle do what they can to prevent Messilina from raining horror on the world but not before poor Anabelle gets sucked into the mix. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about these events and learning of the origins of these wonderful characters. What I truly enjoy is how all these characters feature in subsequent novels, how intricate their tales are and how they grow throughout. I love Theo's portrayal of magic, druids, myths and legends and how they meld together in an exciting tale of revenge, redemption and ultimately love.

I first listened to another series by this author - The Voodoo Academy - and I was amazed at the attention to detail for the universe he created. I am easily won over by world-building, so his books seem perfect for me. This book is a prequel to the Voodoo Academy series and it was really nice to actually get to know the details of what happened beforehand. I liked the characters, I liked the action, overall I recommend this book.

However... the narrator was... weird. Brownie points for trying to do different voices for each character, that is an effort I applaud. But some voices sounded very unnatural. There is a male character, for example, that is along the main character for most of the action, and his voice sounds... robotic, I would describe it. I was very turned off by that. Other than this detail, the book is definitely worth it.

Phenomenal Narration!

I began Monroe's Gates of Eden books out of order, with Voodoo Academy. After completing that series, I decided to go back to the beginning. Druidess is the introduction to a world of magic of different cultures, magic that can be good or evil. The book can be read as a standalone but there are little nuggets that hint at awesome stories ahead.

Kelley Hazen was the new-to-me narrator. I was amazed at such an absolutely fantastic performance. I've rarely heard a narrator with such an expressive voice and she performs all types of different voices extremely well.

I'm eager to continue on with this series, both to read more stories in the excellent world Theophilus Monroe has created and to hear more of Kelley Hazen's narration.

This is the second book I have read in the author's Gates of Eden series, and I made the decision to read them in internal chronological order rather than publishing order. While not necessarily a mistake, it did feel as though I was missing something as this book was written as a prequel to some of the other books - I expect people who have read the books in publishing order would have picked up on details that I may have missed.

Other than that, this was an enjoyable, easy read, providing origin stories for several characters in the Gates of Eden universe. Monroe's writing style is very readable. Urban fantasy is not a field I read as much as other areas in the SFF genre, but I suspect people who are heavily into urban fantasy will probably get more out of it than I did.

I enjoyed the story and the characters. It was fun and had its interesting moments a few parts got a little confusing and I had to go back and listen over but I enjoyed it. The narration was decent but probably could have faired better if done a little different. I like the story the author is telling although I can't help but read into certain things a little and wonder about if certain hidden messages about purity aren't trying to be pushed on young minds in a backwards way. Or maybe that is just me reading into things too much and making a mountain out of a mole hill. There are other aspects that bothered me like wrong aspects of history being used but then again it is supernatural fiction so now I'm just being extra picky.

This book can be taken two ways, as a paranormal teen adventure or an allegory for the current times. Either way the book is a good read pulling on history and the cultural beliefs from our past. The scenes are described so well that you will find yourself thinking of them like the song you can't get out of your mind. Joni was more mature than most fourteen-year-olds and Roger was raised in Shamanic traditions, both of them are uniquely qualified to fight the evil created by the past culture. Some may think the ending was simple, but overcoming your past is never easy and never simple. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Narrated beautifully by Kelley Hazen, presents Joni, a having a deep interesting desire to know her family's history of the plantation home but she hadn't realized that this past would end up involving the spirits of the long dead and discovering that she herself has a connection to the mysterious and mythical druids. A snarky clash of paranormal souls in a story that works nicely as a gateway not only for Joni if the reader continues her journey in the Gates of Eden series but also carves a path to learn more about voodoo magic in the series Voodoo Academy as well.

Joni is 14 year old and just found out she is a Druidess. The spirit of young Isabelle has been sent to warn her of danger. It is Isabelle's duty to guide Joni as she learns to use her magic. When Joni's mother is struck by dark magic, she seems the help of a Choctaw Shaman, Roger. The three of them must fight together to save not only Joni's family but many others as well.

Overall, the story was very well done. The elements of fantasy blended well with traditional beliefs and practices that are still used today. There were some parts that I felt were inappropriate because of the age and could have been left out.

Revenge is as old as history . It can be good or bad depending on the circumstances. For Joni it was revealed as bad as a former slave wanted revenge on the Campbell family. Joni has Druid blood in her
but has no magical talent. She can only draw magic but has to learn how that works. and that starts with the sister Isabelle whose sister Messalina accepted bad magic . Isabella needs to help Joni to overcome her sister's magic. Joni received help from the Choctaw shaman Roger. But can they undo the black magic ?.Well worth reading.

It is a prequel to both the Druid Legacy (Elijah Wadsworth) and the Voodoo Legacy (Annabelle Mulledy). I have had at the pleasure of reading both – but this novella explains a lot and fills in the background for both series. That all said and down I absolutely loved this novella as a stand alone. This novella takes a look at Voodoo, as well as the world of Celtic and Native American Mthology. Monroe spins an impressive tale. One you won’t want to miss. I received this novella from Booksprout. This is an interesting book with a different kind of “fantasy” theme than I’ve read before. It’s about a young girl and learning she is magical. It’s a prequel to another series. I did like the story, it seemed to move along nicely. But there were times it was definitely more geared towards younger readers. I am not as into YA as I used to be so a few times I did roll my eyes but overall it was an interesting read. I am going to give the next book a try as well.

This book has enough action to be truly exciting. Fourteen-year-old Joni Campbell is just a girl that goes to school and loves to read the journals of her ancestors. When strange things start happening at her family home, Joni finds out that she is special. This story is fast-paced, contains magic, and teenage romance, and ends in a cliffhanger. Very highly recommended.

Mr. Monroe has done it again. He weaves intricate tapestries of folklore, often combining three or more sources with widely varying elements, yet he always manages to make it work. The young druidess inherited aspects of two ancient Irish folklore tales and a young Choctaw Indian teenager brings his own to the mix. Throw in some Haitian voodoo and you've got a powder keg of a story. I was provided this novel at no cost, but my reviews are not contingent upon price.

This was an interesting introduction to the "Gates Of Eden" universe and a prequel to two different series. I was entertained by Theophilus Monroe's humorous and irreverent way of presenting his story. I enjoyed the characters and liked seeing characters, from other series of the author, being part of this new material. Kelley Hazen's narration was fun and entertaining. Loved the story. It was interesting and kept me entertained. The story isn’t something that I have read or listened to before. It has great world building in it and the characters were interesting and had me wanting to know more about them. The narrator did a really good job bringing them to life and distinguishing each one as their own person. The audiobook was well done in my opinion. The author provided me a promo code and this is my honest review.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator and extremely enjoyable. Joni hears the voice of a child, a ghost child. It was the last night of innocents as she finds herself in a world of magic where good and evil battles. The interesting and intriguing characters keep you listening, wondering what unexpected twist will happen next in this action packed tale. It's very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to tales with these characters.

This was the beginning of Joni’s story. We learn how she comes to find about part of her heritage. We see her learn how her ‘power’ works, learning to use it, and saving several people along the way.

If you have or plan to read the Wyrmrider series, I suggest you read this too.

Great for all ages, YA and up.

Druidess is a prequel to both the Druid Legacy and the Voodoo Legacy series's and is absolutely fascinating in it's own right. This novella fills in history and background for both series while still creating it's own strong storyline. I loved the blending of multi cultures' mythologies to create a fun adventure. The characters were fun and I think kids who like Percy Jackson and Harry Potter will enjoy The Druidess. The only complaint I have is that the slave characters speak perfect modern English, which took away from my immersion in the story.

Joni, finally.
One of the things I love about Mr. Monroe's series is how they are all interwoven in the same universe. I've been wanting to read Joni's story after being introduced to her in Annabelle's Voodoo series. I have a feeling I need to listen to the Wyrmrider series to get even more. I can't wait. Alas, you can't miss with this author and narrator combo.
