Medium Trouble #1

Ghost of Lies

Rate this book
Hiro
Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death… the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense. Still, the more I’m around Maddox, the more I realize that beneath that surly exterior is a kind and caring man who will do anything to help.

Maddox
When another man dies, I know we have a serial killer on our hands—the same murderer who has remained elusive for a year and a half. To add to my frustration, I keep running into Hiro at crime scenes only to hear him claim that he can talk to ghosts. The words of the dead could lead us to the serial killer and even tell us who is next, but ghosts? There’s no such thing as ghosts. Hiro is determined and charming, and no matter what I do, I can’t stop letting him get involved. He's definitely snagged my attention, but when he nearly winds up dead, I know he's getting closer to the truth—and if I don’t do something soon, he might be next.

Ghost of Lies is full of action, mystery, humor, and romance. Though more is planned for this couple, the mystery is solved and there is a happy ending.

Alice's new ghost book had all of the intrigue of a whodunit, mixed with the tension of a serial killer story, tempered with her usual over-the-top humor.

At 29, book store owner Hiro had been able to see and talk to ghosts for as long as he could remember, but after his adopted brother, Sean, was killed by a serial killer, he'd been trying to use that spectral ability to stop the murderer and bring them to justice.

At 38, grumpy, hunky police detective Maddox had no time or patience for the cute, younger guy he continuously stumbled over at one homicide scene after another.

But after winning favor with the mayor, Hiro had his way in to work on the investigation, even if no one wanted his help, especially Maddox.

Most of the humor worked pretty well for me; however, I found some of the antics of Maddox's dead "fiancé", Reggie, to be tip-toeing riiiiiight up to that line of it being too much, too silly for my tastes.

I did especially like how the wind was taken out of the sails of the dreaded "Jealous (Dead) Ex" plot point, though, pretty much entirely avoiding "all of that" mess.

My very favorite parts of the book were where Hiro was proving the existence of ghosts to both Maddox and to Maddox's more-than-skeptical boss. Seeing them begrudgingly put aside their disbelief was both satisfying and pretty funny to witness.

I don't tend to be the biggest fan of mysteries in general, so unsurprisingly, my least favorite part was trying to discover the identity of the serial killer. Fans of Whodunit’s will most likely be all over those parts of the book, but once everything was laid out and revealed, I was personally left in a bit of a "Wait, WHAAAAT?" situation.

Other than the danger that Hiro continually found himself in, most of the drama in the story came from Maddox and Hiro's family trying to keep Hiro safe and out of harm's way, so not really what I'd describe as relationship angst.

Overall, the story was both fun and entertaining, so I'd rate it at around 4 stars and recommend it to fans of mysteries and Alice's patented brand of humor. 😁

Second read: Is it possible not to love Greg Boudreaux? He does such a fantastic job every time. 😍

_______________________

I half-read this book on my Kindle and half-listened to the audiobook. I have to say that while I am not usually a big lover of audiobooks, the way Greg Boudreaux brings both main characters to life. I could feel all the sarcasm and sass in the dialogues, and it was an amazing auditive experience. It makes me want to listen to Alice Winter's other series that I enjoyed reading just to see if they are as fun as this one.

“Your closest friend is a ghost?” he asks, sounding a bit incredulous.
“If you had someone who haunted you, went everywhere with you, and watched you pee on occasion, you’d just give in and make them your friend too.”

Hiro, a 29-year-old bookstore owner, can see ghosts. He's been able to see them for as long as he can remember, but he has no idea how or why, and people don't take him seriously when he says that he can see and talk to ghosts, so he just learned to hide it. Maddox, a 38-year-old grumpy and stern detective, has no more patience for Hiro, especially after having had a few suspicious runs-in with Hiro at crime scenes. He is starting to wonder how Hiro seems to always turn up near murder scenes or police investigations, and things only get more frustrating for Maddox when he is forced to take Hiro as his consultant while investigating the serial killer who murdered Hiro's brother over a year ago.

The pace is good, and while I'm not always the biggest fan of mystery and police investigation books, this one was perfect for me. The plot was light and funny enough to keep me entertained, but it was also complex enough for me not to know right away who was the killer, and who was involved in the series of murders. I had a few suspicions, but while some of them proved to be partially right, in the end, I was shocked, which I enjoyed, because I hate it when we can guess who the killer is too easily. I also like that the pieces of information are revealed through action and dialogue, and not just dropped here and there or revealed through long internal monologues.

I open the first aid kit and look in to see his “wide” selection. “This is what you have?” I ask as I hold up a teeny Band-Aid.
“Yes, you just have to use fifteen of them for a papercut-sized wound,” he says.
“Why the hell didn’t you say that you didn’t have anything and to go to my house?”
“I have Scotch tape if you want it,” he says with a grin.
“To tape your mouth shut?” I grumble.

Maddox and Hiro have a grumpy/sunshine relationship in which Hiro is most definitely the sunshine guy. He's just so easygoing and relaxed about everything, and it cracked me up how he was always trying to act casual even when he inevitably ended up in humiliating situations (often in front of Maddox too). Hiro is just so positive about everything, and he learned to embrace his difference. While he tries not to broadcast his special ability to everyone, he doesn't give a shit about people's disbelief either.

“Oh! Thank you for the birthday cake,” I say.
He holds his hands up. “I didn’t get it for you, Maddox did, but he’d probably skin your ass if you thanked him, so you’re welcome,” he says.
I look at him in surprise then dread. “Oh no… it looks so good too. There’s poison in this, isn’t there?”

I would not exactly describe Maddox and Hiro's relationship as hate-to-love, but there was some tension and dislike between them at first. Their dynamic in the first few chapters reminded me of Marcus and Finn in How to Vex a Vampire: Hiro thought Maddox was sexy and attractive and was trying to find a way into his life, but Maddox was all grumpy and pretending that he hated Hiro even though we could see that he was attracted to him.

While I enjoyed the romance, I did find it a bit rushed. Maddox is super annoyed with Hiro and doesn't want anything to do with him, but after being forced to work with Hiro for only a few days, he is already super protective of him and can't see himself without him. I would have loved the development of the romantic feelings to be slower and over a longer period, or simply for them to start a relationship, without having this intensity from the beginning... But maybe that's just me being picky.

While I feel like I know a lot about Hiro, Maddox is still more of a mystery, and I hope to get to know more about him in the next book. I adored his grumpiness thawed thanks to Hiro's sweetness, and how Maddox showed a caring and softer side as he spent more time with Hiro.

“It depends. Are you going to tell me all of your embarrassing secrets?” I ask. “Dude, I’ve already sat before you while carrying on conversations with imaginary friends, rolled around with imaginary friends, crawled around on the ground after imaginary birds… I’m not sure how much more embarrassment I can take. Oh wait… I also vomited on you.”

I know many people did not enjoy this book or even DNFed it because of the crude humor and the fact that the ghosts are acting like horny teenagers most of the time, but honestly, this is the light and funny read I needed, and I enjoyed it. It is a quick read with funny and not-so-funny ghosts, cute cats, sass and banter, and a good intrigue that keeps us hooked until the end. I enjoy Alice Winter's way of mixing paranormal, intriguing plot and hilarious dialogues, and cute and spicy relationships.

Yikes this author is NOT for me!

The premise was actually interesting, I battled through the juvenile humour and lacklustre romance in order to follow the plot, sadly that fell apart at the conclusion.

The humour - it made me seriously wonder how old the author is. Ghosts spend their time watching people pee, discussing penises and sitting in people's laps being lewd. Every time characters are introduced living or dead prepare for inappropriate sexual banter. Dick jokes and requesting dick pics while hunting the corpse of a teenage girl. For me this wasn't funny or cute, it was ghostly sexual harassment. The Reggie character was just weird, as was the mayor's wife. The 'humour' is relentless.

There's no emotion deeper than a papercut. No one living or gone matters. Threats are inconvenient rather than scary. The romance just was.

Hunkalicious. Everyone uses the term. It's cringeworthy.
Maddox (I think) is a grouch. His moments of dry humour were an actual relief from the overt lewd banter but he's a grouch, a grump, a grinch...like it's an aim to be so.
Hiro is teenage in manner, but has money to throw away and runs a business.

There's no visuals. Hiro is Japanese, Maddox has at least two tattoos somewhere on his person. That's all I know. Ages, height, hair colour....if it's mentioned it didn't stand out. I'm not a heavily visual reader but I do like something to go on. They behave immature.

The series killer, named for the second victim who we never learn anything about. The resolution made no sense.. Why now? And It would have helped to have a timeline but we're never told how old character Hiro is, or how old his brother Sean was, so it was odd. Only ages we're given is for Ben's children and the fact Mr Hunkalicious is nine years older than Hiro. The book lost another star for me having waded through for the wtf conclusion.

The plot had potential but the banter was painful.

Astonishing!!!

Great story, amazing plot and out of the ordinary characters, I had so much fun reading and listening this book, congratulations to Alice Winters!!!!
I’m impressed, absolutely loved all the characters, specially the main characters, the way that their chemistry was build was superb, added to that the steamy scenes, it was perfection!
The mystery was so intriguing, surprising even, it hooked me from the start, I was devouring every page!
The comedy was a show on it’s own, I laughed several times, even with silly school jokes, I had a blast!
Everything was constructed nicely, really well written, I’m completely satisfied!

On the audible version, Greg Boudreaux gave an amazing performance, beautiful voice and great acting, a couple of sentences I would have choose a different reaction or feeling, just for my personal taste, however, it didn’t jeopardised in any way, he was superb!!! Kudos!!!

I adored the art cover, praises to Natasha Snow Design!!!

funny, sexy with an interesting plot — and great narration by Greg Boudreaux.

“Can you (Natalie, the ghost) go see what Detective Booker is doing?”
“Sure, sure. I’ll be back as quick as a lick of a dick,” she says as she floats upward since homicide is on the second floor. She’s gone not even ten seconds before floating back down.
“He’s in the bathroom and his penis… Hiro… his dick…” Her eyes get extremely wide.
Oh. My. God.
I am being possessed by a ghost. Haunted. Tortured.
“Natalie, go find his desk. See if there’s anything interesting on it.”
She eyes me for a long moment.
“Don’t you want to know how big it is?”
“His desk?” I ask, knowing full well what she’s talking about.
“Dick.” Kind of.
“No! What the hell, Natalie. Go!”

That’s Alice Winters' writing for you *lmao

This was just the right amount of fun and entertaining, however it definitely didn't make me feet swing?
I think I will end this series on a high and just imagine their happy ending.

I have only read 1 Alice Winters book to compare to, and this felt same same but different??

Similar silly humour, loveable enough characters, a storyline/plot that will stretch over multiple books, ect.

However, I just feel like I did not feel a thousand blossoms bloom... between our MC's and all of a sudden they were acting like partners? (In crime and in relationship building status, also please do yourself a favour if you don't understand the reference and google "let there be a thousand blossoms bloom bob katter" YOU'RE WELCOME 🤭🤭🤭)

The grumpy stoic cop man persona left the chat really fucking quickly after the smallest time and I think that's where I could have enjoyed this way more if he was grumpier longer...
Please come back grumpy man, it's so much hotter when you're being a snarky asshat

Bonus points though that the fact our MC can talk to ghosts and he ACTUALLY USES THIS to the plot's advantage!!
This was a very refreshing take as most books i've read, the ghost abilities are secret or people don't believe them or something.. So this was a great change!
It was believable for me, because if I could talk to ghosts, YOU BETTER BELIEVE I WOULD BE TELLING EVERYONE.

The ex boyfriend ghost Reggie antics were very entertaining, and Natalie the ghost were highlights of silly goosery the whole book 💖

This book was such an unexpected delight! It was 5 stars from the first page to the last. Winters has outdone herself with this series and I hope there is many more books planned for the adventures of Hiro and Maddox.

The whole idea of this book (ghost seeing consultant for the police department) was such a great idea and executed perfectly. The writing was superb. The dialogue was witty and had me laughing out loud. The pacing of the book was spot on. Hiro and Maddox's relationship developed so naturally and beautifully throughout the book and was the perfect grumpy/sunshine trope. I loved how upbeat and positive Hiro is and how much he embraces being different and how he deals with everyone's disbelief. The mystery and suspense was handled perfectly and made it so hard to put the book down. I'm going to dive straight into book two and be counting down until a book three is released.

“No words?”
“Nah, you fucked them out of me,” I say with a grin.
“Oh wow… I never… never really thought you could be speechless. The power of my cock is out of this world.”

4.25⭐️

Well, I wasn’t expecting that. I’ve had this on my TBR since last spooky season, and I finally decided to bite the bullet and take it for a spin. I’ll say this: I really enjoyed following Hiro and his goal of trying to help people because of what happened to his brother. We follow him as he tries to help ghosts cross over while also trying to solve his brother’s murder.

This book is interesting because, like a few other stories with ghost-whisperer vibes, it focuses more on Hiro’s connection with the dead than the living—and that’s what fascinates me most. Watching Hiro and the ghost of his brother interact was emotional, and I’ll admit, I ugly sobbed at the end.

Also, some ghosts are just assholes. I’m talking about you, Reggie. Get lost. I’m sorry, but he really annoyed me, and I just know I’m going to have to see more of him in the next book. Ugh.

Then we’ve got Maddox, the grumpy-ass detective who has it out for Hiro. We love a grumpy detective who isn’t taking shit from our main character and stays suspicious of him the entire time. Love that.

Overall, this was a rollercoaster of emotions. I had zero clue where the mystery was going, and by the end, I was left with a giant question mark above my head. Like, how did we get here? I mean, it makes sense, but still—how did we end up with this person being responsible for all this shit? Crazy, really.

All in all, I really, really liked this, and I hope to continue the series.

Re-reading this first book before reading the rest of the series, as my first read was so long ago.

*****

Wow! Going into this, I had no idea that I would love it so much!
I listened to the audio version, and Greg Boudreaux's narration was absolutely perfect!!! So much sass and so cheeky. I was living for it.
I spent so much of this with a stupid grin on my face.
The story itself had everything.
M/M romance, with a cute, funny guy who can see and talk to ghosts, and the grumpy, sexy detective who he ends up working with to solve the case.
Sexy, hilarious, hot, suspenseful, touching, perfect.
Definitely a new favourite!

Loved the audio especially Maddox's grumpy voice

I loved this!
Hiro can see ghosts, including the ghost of his murdered brother. Maddox is the police detective that is saddled with Hiro as he works as a consultant to solve his brothers murder.
So, I have trust issues and may have shouted "I knew it" at one particular scene only to have the rug pulled from under me. I don't know how Alice Winters does it, just I just totally didn't see that coming.
Funny, in true Winters style, but a more subdued humour. I think with the ghosts it could have been easy to be outlandish, but I didn't find that here. Sure there were moments of levity but it was used to break up heavier subjects.
Darker so trigger warnings for murder scenes and discussions around them. Also attempted murder, strangulation... Basically not all ghosts are nice or want to find peace.

Re-read 12th - 13th January 2022

I felt I needed a re-read before starting Ghost of Truth.

4.5*

I really enjoyed this one. It had a bit of everything wrapped up in this author’s distinctive style.

Hiro can see the dead and I can honestly say he’s welcome to it. Definitely not a “superpower” I’d want.
Anyway I’m getting off track here.

It’s a gift Hiro was born with but it takes on new meaning when his brother Sean is killed. Hiro is determined to find the identity of his brothers killer.

His main problem is the incredibly handsome but grumpy detective Maddox Booker.

Ben whistles. “Jeezus, Maddox, you’re in a mood today.”
Which is funny when I thought Maddox was born “in a mood.”

The best way to describe Ben and Maddox is to say that all of the happiness was drained out of Maddox’s body and shoved into Ben, probably sometime during childhood if I have to guess.

So these two butt heads and as you can imagine it’s not easy getting people let alone an incredibly grumpy detective to believe you actually can see and communicate with ghosts. The journey is a fun one.

Like I said earlier this book has a bit of everything. Including a fascinating bunch of characters.

I can’t wait for the next one.

I generally really like Alice Winters' books and I probably would have given this one four or five stars but the constant sexual harassment by the ghosts to the living, even if the living weren't aware of it, really made me feel uncomfortable and creeped out. Even if you are a ghost, it still really says something about you if you feel it is okay to say and do lewd things to people who are unwilling - and since they can't see you and don't know what you are doing or saying, they have to be considered unwilling. It also, sadly, says something about Hiro, that he CAN see and hear what they are doing and only ever puts up a token protest about it, and considers these ghosts his family and friends. I get this was supposed to be lighthearted and funny but a lot of us can't just wave away sexual harassment, even by ghosts. In some ways it really made it even worse because the victims didn't know it was happening and had no way to get away from it.

I was super excited about this because I really like psychic/ghost seeing people x cops but I ended up just feeling super gross.

Great characters, an interesting plot, and ghosts both spooky and goofy; topped off with classic Alice Winters' humour.

Hiro can see the dead, and he helps them find peace and cross over. His ability drops him in a lot of awkward-to-explain situations, like crime scenes; often finding the body before the police do. This leads to a lot of run ins with Detective Maddox, who's trying to figure out how Hiro knows so much.

Through some unusual circumstances involving the mayor's dead wife's explicit painting, Hiro ends up as a consultant on one of Maddox's cases. Hiro and Maddox's relationship is a highlight, their banter was so fun to read.

The mystery was interesting and I didn't guess whodunit. It was actually spooky and had some horror elements that I really enjoyed!

2024 update: apparently I read this book a while ago and loved it? Didn't remember it at all so...

This book is a promising start to a new series. I laughed out loud several times, and that's always a good recommendation since I don't tend to do that often while reading. I think paranormal is something Alice Winters does very well, as any fan of her Demon Magic series will already know.

I do love paranormal books, but I'm a fangirl for writing technique, though, so it's not so much the plot of the book that does it for me as much as the execution of the story. I like that Alice Winters shows the story through action and character dialogue rather than using lazy writing tools like exposition, internal monologue, or relying on overused tropes and formulas. Yes, the author does have a signature style to most of her books (snark and investigations), but that doesn't detract from the enjoyment for me. I thought the story was interesting, it definitely kept my attention all the way through, and the storytelling was top-notch.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Hiro, Maddox, and their menagerie of ghostly sidekicks get up to next. I feel like I know Hiro pretty well as a character after reading this first book, but there is still a lot to learn about the rest of the crew and I'm here for it.

Bottom line: This book is the first in a new series with a second installment planned for release in early 2022. The book doesn't end on a cliffhanger as the mystery is fully resolved by the end. You will end up wanting more from this group immediately, but that's not a bad thing, is it? 5 stars for this fun and action-packed series debut.

I somehow purchased this audiobook by accident a few weeks ago and never got around to returning it. I randomly decided to start listening to it and…wow. It turned out to be one of the best paranormal criminal mystery romances that I’ve read/listened to in a long time. Greg Bourdreaux did such an impressive job that I’m certain I wouldn’t have enjoyed this as much if I had read it on my own. His tone and intonation for each of the characters was terrific, and I especially enjoyed the way he read for Hiro. He was a ridiculously lovable character and I couldn’t help being swept away by his snarkiness and sass. The fact that he embraced his gift instead of viewing it as a curse was refreshing. Even Maddox, the grumpiest detective on the police force, couldn't resist him. Their banter was hilarious and they, along with Reggie and Natalie, had me constantly laughing out loud. Who knew that horny ghosts could be so funny?

The murder mystery itself was surprisingly good and I had a lot of fun following Hiro and Maddox around as they tried to solve it. The culprit was very unexpected and the author did a great job throwing me off because every time I thought I knew who the killer was it turned out to be wrong. The paranormal aspects of the mystery were flawlessly incorporated and made it even better. Seeing how protective Maddox became over Hiro toward the end was the final piece of perfection that made this story great. 5 very unexpected stars

I really liked the crime solving aspect but the relationship felt a bit off.

I couldn't really see how they fell in love? It felt a bit rushed, like the relationship was really new and they declare their love immediately... I'm just getting a bit fed up of books where they seemingly fall in love off the page 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think I'd have liked it better if declarations were left til book 2 where they know each other better?

Cool premise but fell a bit short. Loved main MC. Cranky guy was super cranky and then turned on a dime and turned super soft, author forgot to show her working out.

I found the mystery element super confusing and ended the book not being super clear on exactly who was guilty and why….but I am not always super bright.

I did feel that there were some inconsistencies in the plot and lore.

MC had ghost friends and it was said that ghosts don’t move on because they have unfinished business but MC did not seem interested in helping them or knowing about any of it.

The romance was a bit meh, did not get the warm fuzzies.

I listened to the audiobook of this and I'm just convinced that Alice Winters books MUST be read in an audio format at some point, to truly get a hilarious and amazing story experience. Greg is such a great narrator and he brings his voices and his snark and sass at 100% for this book!

I love Hiro and all his ghost friends - Natalie, the stripper ghost, even Reggie. There is a lot of emotion as well - and some heavy stuff since this does deal with death and ghosts and moving on and mourning. There's some surprising heavy little moments mixed in with all the hilarity and hijinks.

If you want a grumpy grump cop, a sweet man who just wants to do the right thing, a grumpy ghost bird, ghosts who harass Hiro constantly, a good feel of found family, and just some very much LOL moments, definitely give this one a try.

And look, Alice's sense of humor is probably not for everyone - I get that. I know there are people who dislike the Hitman series just as much as I praise and ADORE it with every fiber of my being lol. But I do think that if you would give some of her books a try in audio format it might change your mind. Hitman, Winsford Shifters, and Happy Endings especially I think are just some of her best books with some of the very best narrators.

Greg Boudreaux is one of the best. He does an excellent job voicing the characters in this one.

3.75 stars for the story.
Hiro can interact with ghost and there is a serial killer at large. One where his adoptive brother was the first victim. He wants to help solve the case but the lead detective, Maddox, isn't a big fan of his. However, Hiro works his way onto the case and into Maddox heart.
I love stories where one can see/interact with ghost and they use their powers to solve crimes that also helps the ghost find peace. One of my favorite series, The Spectral Files by S.E. Harmon, is very similar to this one. This book was entertaining and trying to figure out the killer kept me guessing.
I did knock a star off because Natalie's behavior was a bit too much. Also, when Hiro and Maddox got together Hiro started sounding a little too Lelandish(yes that's a word now lol). Speaking of Natalie why was she never around when Millie appeared? Supposedly she has been around hero for years but when an evil ghost attacks she now where to be found. Like what?!
Anyways this was a solid entertaining listen.

Un-boo-lievably amazing!

I must confess something: I just can’t resist—I don’t even really try honestly—the magical combo of humor, paranormal and Alice Winter’s writing. When I see it I must stop what I’m doing so I can devour it all.

“‘I’m all yours as long as you’re all mine.’
He squeezes me. ‘One hundred percent.’”

I am 100% in love with these two. My life craves more of the adorably tenacious Hiro and for sure won’t be complete without a sexy, grumpy, grouchy Maddox in it. I love their banter, the way they fit together, but most of all, it’s the spookily smart crime-solving duo they make that I can’t get enough of. They thrilled me from page one and I happily admit I didn’t see the ending coming. And of course I have to include the ghosties with the mosties who are the phantom cherry on the top of this hauntingly fantastic and delightful book.

Audiobook 1/2023

Ebook read 11/2021:
I usually feel excited with Alice Winters new release but also wary about it. Sometimes her brand of humor is too over the top for my taste, so I'm glad to say Ghost of Lies is a winner.
We have the grumpy/sunshine troupe, with Hiro who can see ghost and Maddox who is the grumpy cop. Hiro reminds me of Alice Winter's usual funny hero, but he had his serious moment when it comes to helping the ghost he came across. The only parts that make me rolled my eyes was when Hiro did the sexy talk and seduction with Maddox, I don't know why I find it too silly. But apart from that, I enjoy reading about them working together to solve the murder mystery. The ghost buddies were a great addition and I can't wait to read about their next adventure and the ghost's shenanigans.

Loved this paranormal murder mystery

That was good. I know I love Alice Winters' way of writing but this one's a definite favourite.

I'm a big suspense and mystery fan, throw in ghosts, a seriously sexy grumpy detective and snarky humour and I'm a fan for life.

There's so many surprises in the plotline that I don't think I'd have guessed the outcome in a million years.

Was it a little bit "suspend belief", perhaps yes, did I care? Not a jot!
