Defeating Big Government Socialism: Saving America's Future

Rate this book
In this national bestseller, former Speaker Newt Gingrich reveals how Big Government Socialism is crippling America—and offers strategies and insights for everyday citizens to overcome its influence.

In communities across our country, Americans are debating Critical Race Theory, vaccine mandates, tax increases, rising inflation, online censorship, and a host of other important issues.

We have serious decisions to make about the future of our nation. Do we want big government, or limited government? Do we want to work hard and keep what we earn, or do we want government to decide how our money is spent? Do we want our children to learn how to think in school, or be told what to think? Do we want to make our own decisions about health care, or should the federal government dictate our treatments? Should American companies compete on a level playing field, or should Washington decide who wins and loses?

Speaker Gingrich analyzes these questions, describes the polling that shows what the American Majority wants, and illustrates how we can create a safer, more prosperous, and secure future for America.

In Defeating Big Government Socialism , best-selling author and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich explains how Americans must confront Big Government Socialism, which has taken over the modern Democratic Party, big business, news media, entertainment, and academia. He also offers strategies and insights for everyday citizens to save America’s future and ensure it remains the greatest nation on earth.

Newt Gingrich is well-known as the architect of the “Contract with America” that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in forty years. After he was elected Speaker, he disrupted the status quo by moving power out of Washington and back to the American people. Under his leadership, Congress passed welfare reform, the first balanced budget in a generation, and the first tax cut in sixteen years. In addition, the Congress restored funding to strengthen defense and intelligence capabilities, an action later lauded by the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.

Today Newt Gingrich is a Fox News contributor. He is a Senior Advisor at Dentons, the world’s largest law firm with more than 6,500 lawyers in 50 countries and offices in more than 125 cities. He advises the firm’s world-class Public Policy and Regulation practice. He is also a Senior Scientist at Gallup.

From May 2011 to May 2012, Newt Gingrich was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States, winning the South Carolina and the Georgia primaries. The campaign was especially notable for its innovative policy agenda, its effort to bring new coalitions into the Republican fold, and for Newt’s debate performances. His $2.50 a gallon energy plan set off a nationwide discussion about the use of America’s energy resources.
But there is a lot more to Newt Gingrich than these remarkable achievements. As an author, Newt has published twenty-nine books including 14 fiction and nonfiction New York Times best-sellers.
Non-fiction books include his latest, Breakout, in addition to A Nation Like No Other, Ronald Reagan: Rendezvous with Destiny, To Save America, Rediscovering God in America, 5 Principles for a Successful Life, Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less, Real Change, A Contract with the Earth, Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America, To Renew America, Lessons Learned the Hard Way, Saving Lives & Saving Money, Window of Opportunity, and The Art of Transformation. He is also the author of a series of historical fiction books including, Gettysburg, Grant Comes East, Never Call Retreat: Lee and Grant the Final Victory, 1945, Pearl Harbor, Days of Infamy, To Make Men Free, To Try Men’s Souls, Valley Forge, and Victory at Yorktown. These novels are active history studies in the lessons of warfare based on fictional accounts of historical wartime battles and their aftermaths. His latest novel, Treason, is the sequel to Duplicity and is a thriller of Washington intrigue and international terrorism.

Newt and his wife, Callista, host and produce historical and public policy documentaries. Recent films include The First American, Divine Mercy: The Canonization of John Paul II, A City Upon A Hill, America at Risk, Nine Days That Changed The World, Ronald Reagan: Rendezvous with Destiny, Rediscovering God in America, Rediscovering God in America II: Our Heritage, and We Have the Power.

In his post-Speaker role, Newt has become one of the most highly sought-after public speakers, accepting invitations to speak before prestigious organizations throughout the world. Because of his own unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Newt is able to share unique and unparalleled insights on a wide range of topics. His audiences find him to be not only educational but also inspirational. For more information about Newt’s speaking engagements, please visit the Worldwide Speakers Group.

Widely recognized for his commitment to a better system of health for all Americans, his leadership in the U.S. Congress helped save Medicare from bankruptcy, prompted FDA reform to help the seriously ill and initiated a new focus on research, prevention, and wellness. Newt Gingrich served his first wife with divorce papers while she was in the hospital recovering from surgery for cancer.

He married his second wife six months after his divorce, and then cheated on her with a member of his staff.

He had a six-year long affair with a member of his staff while going on tv and the floor of the House to moralize about adultery and impeach Clinton.

And then he married the woman he had a six year affair with, once he divorced his second wife (who he, again, married six months after serving his first wife with divorce papers while she was recovering from cancer surgery), and he is some sort of moral authority?

The man is as morally bankrupt as they come, and he hasn't met a value he wouldn't sell out for a younger, pretter one. Yet he wants us to pay him to preach to us about the values America should hold? No thanks, hard pass.

Newt Gingrich is best known for his years in politics, particularly as Speaker of the House. He is also a scholar of history, well-studied, and well-spoken. He has that innate ability to see not only the details of policies, but the big picture as well. Defeating Big Government Socialism is Gingrich’s latest volume of policy explanations and prescriptions. Big Government Socialism here is defined in the widest way, but at its root is a description of bureaucracy gone mad. Gingrich cogently argues, with quotations from Locke, Tocqueville, Hamilton, Adams, and Krauthhammer, that our system of government was designed to be small, limited, and divided. Read the Federalist Papers, he argues, with its emphasis on separation of powers. What’s emerged, starting with FDR, but exploding more recently is a overarching bureaucracy of elitists who think that they, rather than the free market, have all the answers. Absolute power corrupts and giving government agencies all power corrupts the process and the outcomes. With these themes in mind, Gingrich tackles a number of issues relevant to modern-day America. Agree with him or disagree, but read his arguments with a serious mind, not just a dismissive wave.

Do we continue to follow the road of decay and decline, or do we choose to revitalize our country and return to the feelings of patriotism that helped America become a shining light to those around the world? Author Newt Gingrich has his goals aligned with the latter and seeks to educate and energize others to follow this new path.

The book addresses the dangers of Big Government Socialism and what could happen if we sit back and allow it to continue its march. While much of it seems to have occurred in the last decade, the origins can be found over a century ago. Mr. Gingrich outlines the history, detailing the main events and explaining what has brought us to the precipice we are standing on today. While it would be impossible to address all the issues without naming those who championed socialism’s “achievements,” the author has chosen not to focus on those people. Rather, he attacks the institution of socialism and the tools that have been used to increase its power.

There are plenty of footnotes to support the writing, and I found myself investigating various facets of the history as well as what led up to some of the most recent issues. The book is anything but dry, and I quickly read it over the course of a few days.

Mr. Gingrich sums up with a call to action. Big Government Socialism will not go away simply because we wish it to, and if America is to survive with all its freedoms intact, it will need our help. It was encouraging the author explained that Republicans should not believe a “red wave” in 2022 and 2024 is the sole answer. Those who choose to represent the people must not turn their backs on the Democrats across the aisle, and only through civility and hard work will non-partisan legislation be once again the norm rather than an occasional surprise. This is a great guidebook for those who wish to be more involved in the solution. At the very least, it should give you perspective on why we should treat family relatives with respect. We may not agree with what they believe, but we will never achieve compromise without understanding what they think. Five stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Hatchette Book Group/Center Street for a complimentary electronic copy of this book.

Big common sense takeaways:
"Disagree without disrespect" as Reagan and Tip O'Neill did and as Justices Scalia and Ginsberg did--differing philosophy but with respect for one another's brilliance.

A study found 15% of adults ended friendships over politics. I bet it's higher now even though America was never intended to be a nation where everyone agrees. "Taking part in dialogue is imperative for a healthy democracy."

"We must relearn what it means to be civil. We must resurrect common ground..."

"An angry and loud minority group is misrepresenting the vast American majority that can come together to achieve progress. Americans need to be able to debate issues without suppressing the thoughts and freedoms of those who have the courage to speak out against the common thought."

Vicious partisanship in Congress and out-of-control government; violence in the streets; an educational system in decline; rising inflation; environmentalism gone amok, and no tolerance for dissent. None of this is new for anyone who’s politically aware. Explaining why these are so destructive to society, and drawing upon our nation’s unique traditions, Gingrich aims to provide the reader with the facts to save the country by understanding threats against us, and “give America a chance to again become the most dynamic, entrepreneurial, free, and safe country in the world.” He not only cites the necessity for a healthy dialogue if we are to survive, but also presents examples of past bipartisanship, not exclusively Democrat or Republican. Written in clear, concise language, the book presents “American solutions based on American principles,” and ultimately, perhaps, a glimmer of hope.

Having read Newt Gingrich's prior book, Beyond Biden, I was excited to read this new book as well.

His descriptions of the actions we, as Americans, need to heed in order to keep our country free from socialism/communism are outlined very clearly and make a lot of sense for all of us.

We must maintain our patriotism, our persistence at maintaining our freedoms, especially freedom of speech, and probably most importantly of all, we MUST maintain our religious freedom. The "marxists" do not believe that any god has a place in their utopia, but rather the government should have "god status" for its citizens.

We, as Americans, know our country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, morals, and civility. We cannot afford to lose these to the socialists/marxists forces who are moving evermore quickly to destroy our country.

I highly recommend this book.

Pretty good read and good ideas. He needed to include term limits as a recommendation to prevent Communism and Socialism here. I personally think our government has grown too big and there's no going back.
He should have called out all of the Progressives/Socialists/Commies that are in office and trying to purposefully ruin our nation.

I was really hoping to enjoy this work by an innovate mind in conservative thinking. This is just red meat for the Maga crowd. Buzzwords and nitpicking. No well thought out proposals.

I first met Newt when I was an 18 year old Congressional intern - just before he launched the contract for America. I find his writing and analysis refreshing and spot on to this day!!

Gingrich did a great job outlining the root of Big Government Socialism and its challenges. Rich in examples and history, it is a must read. Here’s what I would like to see in his next book: how to fix this mess. From flyover country, it’s very apparent that we have a mess created by two parties that believe in politics before performance.
That book, I would buy in a heartbeat.

I see this book as a way to remember where America has been since 2020 and the start of the Biden era, forever to be immortalized as we move precariously closer to an authoritarian state. One element I struggled with, Gingrich fails to keep his COVID assessment unbiased, instead providing his opinion on masks and vaccinations "for the greater good". I think this book would have been equally effective if he had left this out. Overall, a realistic and pragmatic look at today's America.

It is truly amazing how such a large portion of the American people have been sold on the idea that socialism is superior to capitalism. They believe socialism will make our economy stronger and fairer to the greatest number of people. It's not as if this idea had been tried before with great success. On the contrary, socialism has failed every time it has been tried.

In his new book Defeating Big Government Socialism: Saving America’s Future, (published July 12, 2022) former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich plays the role of devil’s advocate in tearing down the arguments for this failed socialist system.

For example, Gingrich explains that Big Government Socialists pretend tolerance, but they are actually intolerant of anyone who does not adhere to their ideology. The Founding Fathers believed in honesty, morality, and faith. The Socialists have redefined these values to where deviancy is accepted as moral. Their idea is to place all authority in the government and take away any belief in a higher power (i.e., God).

Further, Socialists reject the right to private property, freedom of speech and all other freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights. They believe that the Constitution is outdated. They want to replace it with a constitution that is a “Living Document” that can be easily changed or amended.

Gingrich poses the question “Do we want to work hard, keep what we earn, and take care of our family and friends, or do we want government to decide who gets what, who wins, and who loses?” He further argues that America is being crippled by the Big Government Socialist agenda.

As an added bonus, there are plenty of footnotes to support the writing.

In Defeating Big Government Socialism: Saving America’s Future, Newt Gingrich outlines how we can defeat these destructive socialist policies and create the prosperous, safe country that the majority of Americans want and deserve. This is a must-read.

In Defeating Big Government Socialism, Gingrich alternates between depictions of what he sees as the hell we're in and the heaven that could be.

The "hell" chapters focus primarily on the conservative enemies du jour: wokeism, inflation, atheism, Biden, Pelosi. "Heaven" features extensive quotations from Washington/Hamilton/Lincoln/Reagan while still dwelling a fair bit on "hell" for contrast. Gingrich's juxtaposition of a detailed description of the sorry state of Biden's America with optimistic, idealistic excerpts from founding fathers and foundational political theorists is carefully formulated to spur feelings of civic responsibility in the lead-up to the next election.

As you might have guessed from its name, Defeating Big Government Socialism is filled with content that will resonate with people who are already in alignment and be repugnant to those who are not. I use the word "content" here intentionally—content, as in, material to be consumed—as that's what this book is. There's no subtlety, thoughtful analysis, or honest attempts to reach voters on the other side of the political gulf. It's simply a piece of elephant-flavored fodder for your next altercation with your purple-haired niece at Thanksgiving.

Was it worth the $31 I paid for it at JAX? No, but I had a lot of time to kill and the other books available for purchase airside were, well...

Scary warnings but unfortunately all very true and timely.

A must read for all lovers of FREEDOM! The excerpt from President Reagan's farewell speech was a kick in the pants to realize how far we've fallen as a society since the early 1990s, for any who haven't already known. We the People will have to do it ourselves. Our government officials have negated their oaths of office as they, major corporations, media, sports, and all forms of 'entertainment' are colluding with the enemies of freedom. We are surrounded by tyrants and traitors and do nothing. May God forgive us all for squandering the freedoms He blessed us with, along with our ancestors who fought, bled, and died as they call to us from their graves to remember. Freedom has never been free.

What a painfully, pointless, book.
For someone who loves to harp on how smart he is (sound familiar?) it’s very clear he isn’t very smart after all. Newt has a very interesting take on the word “socialism” and is very selective as to what he applies to to, in a vain attempt to slander it. Newt has no problems with “bail outs” for companies run by mega rich people who have large sums of money to donate to political parties that newt supports.
There’s evil and then there’s Newt, who is a completely different definition of the word. It’s no wonder he loves trump. Multiple marriages, affairs, bankruptcies, all at the expense of people trying to make enough to survive on to feed and take care of their loved ones.

This is an exceptionally well researched, expansive and integrated plan for restoring and preserving America according to our founding values and principles. Newt explains in great detail what has gone wrong across society and the foundational principles which are driving our decline as a nation. He articulates masterfully the argument against big government socialism: why it is wrong and the damage it causes our people. The source notes are extensive and include some of the most important thoughts from our founding fathers and from contemporary authors. This book fits alongside The Great Reset by Glenn Beck, The Dying Citizen by Victor Davis Hanson, and American Marxism by Mark Levine.

Im a progressive Liberal and wanted to read a book with an opposing view.. see what the other side thinks. I was expecting some higher form of intellectualism, but wow, this is just a smear attack. Newt doesn't represent at all what our intention is or hope is for this country. He also gives non-stop data from so many fields to coerce the mind into thinking you're getting the truth. But, sadly, he gaves partial truths to make the reader angry in hopes you hate the opposing party. Not to mention, there are zero solutions given on how to remedy America's issues other than the other side not have power. Made it 6 chapters in and decided I was done with the propaganda.

Well-written. Newt is intelligent and communicates so well. This book, and so many like it, state facts and recall moments in history that we all need to remember and research if we don’t remember. However, like many others, our frustration mounts without being able to actually make the changes necessary in our country. The magnitude of wrong is so overwhelming and from so many different directions that it is hard to know where to begin the fight! Unfortunately, we search for the answers, but no one seems to be able to guide the masses or provide true leadership that is necessary.

Self-defeating, BIG mouth, words-diarrhea, anti-social Newt in permanent denial.
In 1938, pro-human FDR warned, "Beware unelected BIG Corps monopolies!" And since WW2 all unelected anti-social subhuman BIG Corps/Bank$tas/MIC-MilitaryIndustrialComplex/CIA/BIG Media BIG MAFIA have caused permanent wars mass-murdering millions, wrecked public services, a Wall Street world financial crash ongoing, and then more wars mass-murdering millions more!
Quote, word-diarrhetic Newt's permanent anti-socials, "No profit in peace."

Is this book political? Yes. Is this book written for and by a Republican? Yes. Can we all do a better job of understanding why our politics are our politics? Yes. Gingrich uses history to support his points and fight back against the big government socialists. He makes excellent points and made me think a lot while reading this book.
