String Theory: Pull one Thread and the Universe Unravels

Rate this book
Mike ‘Bernie’ Bern is an accident prone, imperfect copy of a deceased war hero just trying to get through his shift as a custodian on Albatross Station. Granted the station is a bit of a backwater but that’s about to change.

When a visiting alien museum curator mistakes Bernie for a welcoming peer, he is thrown into the role of tour guide. Bernie reluctantly finds himself caught up in plots involving nefarious Earth Culture extremists, brawling gangs of physicists, greedy station officials and mysterious galactic powers. At the center of them all is the Curator’s prize; the World’s Largest Ball of String.

Bernie’s attempt at heroics lands him adrift in space desperately trying to harness his unwanted talent for the improbable so he can rescue the Curator, save himself and prevent the station’s destruction.

String Theory is a humorous Science Fiction romp appealing to lovers of Science Fiction looking for something fun and engaging. Readers of Terry Pratchett, John Scalzi, or Barry Hutchinson will enjoy this first of the Albatross Station adventures.

Fun and silly space adventure!

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of String Theory, and it was fantastic from start to finish. A funny, exciting adventure set on a space station filled with odd and interesting humans and aliens. Fans of Douglass Adams and Terry Prachett will feel right at home here.

This story has a lot of potential. lots of whacky characters, cool set pieces, and the action scenes were quite creative. There was a battle on a tram that involved strobe lights and flinging around passed out drunk guys that I enjoyed.

Unfortunately, this book still feels like an early draft. Quite a few typos, redundant information, or unwieldly wording. Even in some cases unnecessary scenes; we could have done without meeting the UPS crew for example. This in itself shouldn't have been enough to stop me enjoying the story, and it took me a while to figure out why I wasn't getting into it.

I eventually realized that the problem was the relationship between our hero, the space janitor Bernie, and the visiting alien museum curator Juss. Juss mistakes Bernie for another curator and insists on having Bernie be his guide to the station. Yet for how excited Juss is to meet a fellow custodian, he never actually asks Bernie about his work, and we never see Bernie have to pretend to be the sort of custodian Juss expects, or any hint that it is possible for Juss to see through the façade. Though, Juss is pretty damn oblivious. Juss also never asks Bernie about himself at all really, and we just don't get to see any of the bonding or mutual respect that would justify Bernie's stated motivation for trying to rescue Juss. Also, yes, the author needs to explicitly explain how Bernie feels about Juss and why he wants to help him right before the climax, rather than it being something readers could have pieced together from the interaction between the two until that point.

This book does have a lot going for it; it is funny and strange, and I liked a lot of the worldbuilding. I liked just how crazy things got at the end too. I just wish it had gone through a few more rounds of editing, with more focus on Bernie and Juss.
