Let me tell you a little bit about myself. My name's Eric. I'm eighteen years old and life is mediocre at best. My best friends are failing Twitch streamers, my boss has a mullet, and I spend every day working at one of the remaining video rental places in the known universe. I live off of a steady diet of VHS tapes, vintage porn, and video games. Let's just say that I wasn't exactly high up on the social ladder. I'd pretty much resigned myself to the fact that life wasn't a bitchin' 80s movie or action flick...
Until one day, it was.
Now, I've got the power to make anyone do anything I want. Seriously, anything. And that includes the three girls I've been lusting after. It's time to nab a head cheerleader and make my way up. World domination is within my reach, er, or at least some modicum of cool, and the only thing that's standing in my way is my own imagination.
Oh wait, and the cops. Oh yeah, and a homicidal criminal mastermind hellbent on ruining this for the both of us. But hey, I can work around that right?
Disclaimer: This book contains graphic sexual scenes. I mean, c'mon, I can make girls do anything I ask. What else would you expect? Seriously, why'd you buy this book? I said anything.
A Misguided Tale with Troubling Tropes This novel is an attempts to blend fantasy elements with modern themes, but unfortunately, falls short in several critical aspects. While the concept of a harem adventure set in the contemporary world may intrigue some readers, this book ultimately succumbs to clichéd storytelling and problematic tropes.
One of the glaring issues with Power of Suggestion is its lack of originality. The "harem adventure" subgenre is not a novel concept, and the book does little to set itself apart from its predecessors. The narrative relies heavily on well-worn tropes, reducing the potential for a fresh and engaging story. As a result, the plot feels predictable, leaving little room for surprises or genuine intrigue.
Additionally, the characterization in Power of Suggestion is disappointingly one-dimensional. The female characters in the so-called harem seem to exist solely to fulfill stereotypical roles, such as the naive innocent, the seductive temptress, and the all-knowing mentor. This perpetuates harmful and outdated gender stereotypes, failing to offer any meaningful character development or agency to these women.
Furthermore, the book's portrayal of relationships and power dynamics is deeply troubling. The concept of a harem inherently raises concerns about consent and autonomy, yet Power of Suggestion fails to address these issues thoughtfully. Instead, it often romanticizes and sensationalizes the idea of multiple women vying for the protagonist's attention without delving into the emotional complexities or potential harm.
The writing style in Power of Suggestion lacks finesse and sophistication, hindering the reader's ability to fully immerse themselves in the story. The prose is often awkward and stilted, making it challenging to connect with the characters or empathize with their experiences. Moreover, the pacing of the narrative is uneven, with certain sections feeling rushed and others drawn out, disrupting the flow of the story. When compared to contemporary works that explore similar themes, Power of Suggestion falls short in addressing the complexities and nuances of relationships, consent, and identity. Modern harem adventures have the potential to delve into deeper emotional exploration and subvert traditional stereotypes, but this novel misses the mark, adhering to tired conventions and failing to offer meaningful insights. In conclusion, Power of Suggestion: A Modern Harem Adventure by Simon Archer fails to deliver on its potential. The book suffers from unoriginal storytelling, shallow characterization, and problematic portrayal of relationships. As a result, it may not resonate with readers seeking a thoughtful and progressive exploration of modern themes within the harem adventure genre.
Wow! Okay first of all, Simon Archer wrote a masterpiece with this one! Great story with incredible characters! A strong 4.5/5 for me. My one fumble in this one was the weird cop and all these other losers that have seen the movie. Just elimate those folks and explore this premise! He didn’t have to do that to create an antagonist. Just stick with the story. But, I still loved it in the end!
The book is heavy on non-consensual sex, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise given the title. The writing style is awkward and cringey, with the author intentionally and frequently breaking the 4th wall. Stuffed full of stereotypes, tropes, cliches and movie/pop culture references this book isn't written for people who like to use their brain very much.
The book is about wish fulfillment and has a very strange view on morality. MC thinks it's ok to mind control women to have sex with him and his friends, rob businesses and people on a daily basis and ruin peoples' lives but he condemns another person for robbing a bank.
The more I read this book the more stupid it made me feel, so I didn't end up finishing it. I'd give this book 1.5 stars if half stars were allowed.
If you know anything about the Harem Lit genre, you know what to expect. This was my first book by Simon Archer and I enjoyed his writing more than some others I've read. The premise alone was intriguing and I was honestly expecting the protagonist's use of his new found power of suggestion to be potentially annoying if he went the route of heavy and abusive use of it.
Thankfully, Archer tactfully manages its use in the story and creates enough conflict throughout to keep the main character in check and the story interesting. The ending leaves room for more potential books and I am really looking forward to more entries should Archer go that route. The main character is a huge movie buff and as I am an 80s baby, I really enjoyed the various quotes and references to films I grew up watching.
I'm not very good at writing reviews but I wanted to give this book its due credit as the writing and story was so much better than what I've previously read in the genre.
Imagine being able to tell someone to do something and them unable to resist to do it and get to use it for 1 year. Whether it be to stop a store robbery or have several girls have sex. The challenge happens when you find that powers don't work on guys who have already had the power too. I Want that type of power! I'd get a tun of money, pile of chicks, multiple homes and cars, and anything else I want.
I could barely tolerate this story has i like it at the start but has tge story progessed I began to hate the MC has most of his uses were spontaneous or were someone else's idea. The chacther never try to find out he can or can't do only the bare minimum if effort that felt like a cheap sell out story to get likes and buy with real deep building on the MC.
I mean, reading the blurb alone, this book comes across as basically every guys fantasy. But the book surprisingly has a decent and intriguing storyline to it on top of the antics and shenanigans of the MC.
Characters were great! The naughty factor was perfect! Excited for the next chapter for Eric!!! I’d like to see him travel next, maybe take ladies to Caribbean or Italy/Greece and add some new chicks. Maybe a one year travel
Ok I didn't think I would like this one so much but I did! I only read books with characters I like personally and I like all of these except the bad guys. So give it a shot!
Yes, our MC is a bit questionable to start, but after a short session his new women actually like being with him. There's a bit of drama with another suggestion guy but overall it's about having fun with his friends.
This is one of the best books I’ve read in awhile.Loved the cheesy movie references and I’m glad one hot goth chic was thrown into this story lol. Can’t wait for book 2!
This is my first book by the author. I've been warry of trying his books out simply because of the sheer volume. I do my best to stay far away from the Eric Vall and Logan Jacobs types these days and I worried I was stumbling into that here.
Anyway, I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. The story didn't really go anywhere and the dramatic story beats and antagonist, if you can call them that, were lacking. But if you accept the fact that it's just a light, power fantasy for power fantasy's sake kind of story, it becomes really enjoyable. The premise was fantastic. That alone makes it stand out in the genre, let alone being in a modern, real world setting. The MC was pleasant enough and the girls, Ren especially, were fantastic. I think if the author took character growth and the relationship between the MC and the girls and the girls with each other more seriously, It could make for a fantastic story.
The groundwork is there for something great. As it is, I was entertained and am willing to give some other books by the author a try that have been gathering dust in my to-read shelf.
