When village bellringer, Jeremy Spooner, is crushed by a church bell, rumours soon fly that his death was no accident.
Who murdered the chief campanologist? Senior sleuths Churchill and Pemberley soon discover there are many suspects in sleepy Compton Poppleford.
After some cake-fuelled investigations, the detective duo uncover a crucial clue. But there’s a problem: it’s locked in a safe in Lidcup’s Jam Factory. Forced to make an audacious attempt to retrieve it, the two old ladies enlist the help of some shady village underworld figures.
Will their mission be a success? Or might they land themselves in a sticky situation?
Emily Organ is the author of over thirty historical cozy mysteries set in Victorian and 1920s England. Her bestselling series include the Penny Green Victorian Mysteries, the Augusta Peel Mysteries, and her newest Emma Langley Victorian Mysteries, in which a plucky widow teams up with former reporter Penny Green. She also writes the Churchill & Pemberley cozy mysteries, featuring two spirited senior sleuths. Emily’s books combine warmth, wit, and a love of history, inspired by her fascination with London’s past.
The Churchill and Pemberley books are fun! The characters make me laugh out loud several times throughout the book. The plots just keep getting better! Really enjoyed the fiasco!
Another installment in the wonderfully charming and humourous adventures of Chuchill and Pemberly (and of course Oswald too). This time the duo investigate the murder of an overly dedicated bell ringer at the village church. The title does give a bit of a hint as to what happens at the climax of the story but in no way does that ruin the events that unfold. Overall a wonderfully cosy mystery with an abundance of quirky characters, country village charm and plenty of eclairs.
What sort of jam have Churchill and Pemberley created for themselves this time? They are experts at falling into curious, and hilarious, situations wherever they might go. Bell ringers, jam makers and figurine lovers provide quite a mix of mysteries for the lady detectives to sort out. Emily Organ has created another delightful story for you to enjoy. Get the whole series!
I had a lot of fun reading this. Churchill and Pemberley are great characters with a very unusual approach to investigating crimes *laughs*
There is a main mystery here: who killed Mr Spooner? But there is also the matter of the missing figurine and the stolen jam recipe so our heroins are really busy through the book :P
Small town characters and truly hilarious situations make this a wonderful read. I'll be checking more books in this series :)
This is another delightful and funny addition to the Churchill and Pemberley "mature lady detectives" series. Each new book outdoes the previous one and I really enjoyed this one.
The addition of bits of British "Change Ringing" on tower bells is accurate and fun.
I look forward to their next amusing, lighthearted adventure!
These charismatic characters will have you laughing and wondering how they can possibly solve the mysteries they face. So much to do - so little time. Enjoyable and very entertaining. Perfect for when you need a light romp. Highly Recommended.
I absolutely adored this latest Churchill & Pemberley Mystery! Emily Organ's characters are quirky and lovable, and this particular cozy found our intrepid detective duo of Mrs. Churchill and Miss Pemberley working with quite a few other residents of their quaint English village to discover who murdered poor Mr. Spooner! A+++ and 5 stars for Fiasco at the Jam Factory!
Another amusing adventure for Mrs Churchill and Mis Pemberley, not forgetting Oswald with the usual twists, turns and cake that one has come to expect from this series. A lighthearted read with an unexpected climax.
I found this series in its infancy, with the gazillions of books on Amazon, it was a shot in the dark. The premise seemed like it would support a good story, so I took the chance. I never looked back.
The books are incredibly entertaining. They're light mysteries. Sense of humor is highly individualized. Who hasn't read a book with the promise of "laughing out loud" or more? And then be left disappointed at the end wondering what was so funny about it. This book doesn't offer highbrow hints of humor. It delivers Smiles on almost every page. If you can't be coaxed out of at least a few chuckles, your sense of humor might just not be fully developed yet. And luckily, the laughs come with excellent characters and solid plots.
All of the books take place in a small English berg. Many of the characters show up in all or most of the books. You get to know them quite well, and you're happy that you do, because each one is strong and fully developed. The real praise, of course, is left for the three main characters. Not just Churchill and Pembroke but their little dog, too.
The plots are all strong. No stinkers or lightweights here!
The only negative is honestly just the backhanded compliment that they aren't written quickly enough. Whenever I feel down, these are my go to''s. Try one. I think you'll be amused.
Amusing light reading. I have read all of thr Churchill & Pemberley mysteries and enjoyed them all. Fiasco at the Jam Factory was however my least favourite of the lot.
The story follows the familiar template, which is fine. There was perhaps not so much cake in this one as the others, but my main gripes were that there were a lot of characters who only had very small parts, making it difficult to remember who was who, I felt some of these existed only to stand in as possible suspects. I also felt the comedy was a little more forced in this one, much of it seemed visual and may work well on TV but the description wasn't conveyed in an overly amusing way this time. The most major point for me wad that the evidence which the murderer was unveiled on was circumstantial at best and made the ending seem rushed.
All the elements of the previous books were there, and it is an enjoyable light read. I almost gave it 3 stars which would have seemed harsh, but 4 seems almost generous - regardless, I shall be reading the next installment when it comes.
This is another fine addition to the C&P canon. I can't get enough of this pair. LOL. I was wondering until about halfway through whether there might actually be a "fiasco". (But I didn't care that much because it's about the journey with C&P, not the so-called destination.) Their antics and conversation are quite drôle, in a comfy-wumfy way, so I just go along with what's happening and smile. Then, a bit more than halfway through, it became apparent that Churchill was getting in way way over her head in deep water. So, golly, I just gobbled the rest of the book in one sitting. And that was my yesterday evening.
Churchill and Pemberley find themselves looking into the murder of the head bell ringer at a church in their village. Many people hated Jeremy Spooner. In fact so many people hated him that they are having trouble narrowing the suspects down. Enlisting the help of some local unscrupulous people makes it even harder. And, Churchill and Pemberley find themselves in a great deal of hot water because of their choices.
I love Emily's Penny Green series. I am not as enamored with her Churchill and Pemberley series. It's okay but not nearly as interesting.
Another book in the Churchill & Pemberley mysteries, and for me the weakest so far. A bell-ringer gets murdered by a sabotaged bell. Churchill & Pemberley are on the case but it turns into more of a ‘heist-gone-wrong’ book than anything else. It was predictable and I found the killer’s ‘reveal’ to be a huge let down. I was waiting for a twist that you sometimes get with books like these, but there was none. Not my favourite book in the series at all and I’m usually such a fan of Emily’s work. Disappointed.
This enchanting story of a pair of bumbling female rural detectives steals our hearts.
They investigate a suspected macabre murder in a church and seem to be doomed to fail. After several ups and downs all appears to have been lost.
Then suddenly the truth is presented to us on a platter or rather at the end of a long rope. Not only is the murderer apprehended but also is a stolen trinket restored.

These cosy mysteries keep getting better and better. Great interaction between the sleuth, Mrs. Churchill and her assistant Pemberly. The little dog, Oswald, also makes for increased humor. Cannot wait to read the next installment in this humouous, cosy mystery series.
Three cases kept the Churchill Detective Agency very busy in this story. Of course when it comes to bad ideas, Mrs. Churchill wins every time putting herself and all involved in the hot seat. Although in the end everything is always revealed in an exciting wrap up with the murderer in handcuffs.
Is this the last instalment? I hope not. I've become very attached to the elderly sleuths, who leave no jam tart unturned. I'll ring the praises of this story which starts on the bell, and finishes with jam tomorrow. Hoping to meet Churchill and Pemberley again on the morrow. And Oswald of course. When the Law's an ass, "Miss Churchly" has the brass neck!
Stolen items and the murder of an over achieving bell ringer are on the menu for our seniors along with the requisite tea and cakes. Wry humor is served as well. Recommended.
So glad I found the Churchill and Pemberley series. Have laughed out loud, and loved their adventures. So sad to have just completed the last one in the series. Please write more!!
So who caused the tenor steeple bell to fall on Mr. Spooner's head and kill him? Who walked off with Mr. Spooner's family's secret jam recipe? Does the disappearance of a favorite figurine have any connection to the other mysteries? Can Mrs. Churchill and Miss Pemberley figure it out?
Once again the humor makes this caper fun. Why the one lady doesn't like raisins in her cake. How the prayer pillow turned out. All the hilarious stuff in between, made this mystery a very fun read!
What a fun book this was. I love this series because it is light hearted and a book that will make you laugh as you try to figure out who did it. Thank you Emily Orgab for another great read!
I absolutely loved reading this Book, my first foray into the Churchill and Pemberley Series. A perfect blend of the comical and the serious . I was entertained throughout .
