Florence Scovel Shinn (September 24, 1871, Camden, New Jersey – October 17, 1940) was an American artist and book illustrator who became a New Thought spiritual teacher and metaphysical writer in her middle years. In New Thought circles, she is best known for her first book, The Game of Life and How to Play It (1925).
Her books "Your Word Is Your Wand" and "The Game of Life and How To Play It" were released as audiobooks in 2014 and 2015 respectively and were narrated by actress Hillary Hawkins.
Shinn is considered part of the New Thought movement, as her writings follow in the tradition of Phineas Quimby (1802–1866), Emma Curtis Hopkins (1849–1925), and both Charles Fillmore (1854–1948) and Myrtle Fillmore (1845–1931), co-founders of the Unity Church.
Motivational author Louise Hay acknowledges her as an early influence.
Crazy this book was written 100 years ago. The principles in this book are only recently being popularized so it was a great reminder of the truth of positive speaking
This is actually 5 books under one cover by Florence Scovel Shinn, a 19th century metaphysician. It’s all about the power of our words, affirmations, manifestation. She includes tons of practical examples which make it relatable even though the examples are from a different era. It stresses the importance of positive thinking, optimism, hope, faith, visualization vs negative thinking, pessimism, dread, fear, stagnation. There was more scripture than I cared for but the overall message still resonated well. I am motivated to be much more careful and deliberate about the words I speak (and think) as I do believe you reap what you sow so it’s critically important to focus on good/positive to manifest health, wealth, love and your right personal expression.
Unfortunately, every book on manifestation has to look similar. As a result, I find myself a bit bored after reading so much on the subject. On the other hand, there are also wise thoughts about entrusting oneself to Providence and giving space for God's work.
