This is volume number two of the Nick Spencer run on Spider-Man! Yay!

So, how was volume one, Jeff?

I wouldn’t know, random Goodreader. I never read it.

It seems that the Parker luck is in the sh*tter, no more of your-friendly-global-corporate-super-genius Spider-Man shenanigans.

What the heck happened, Jeff?

I have no idea, but I’d bet it was pretty bad.

The only bright spot is Peter is back with Mary Jane. He hit the tiger-ish jackpot again, etc. etc. etc. But at this point it seems more like winning a $1 with a scratch off than hitting the Mega-Million Jackpot.

And he also has Fred Myers, aka Boomerang, as a roommate as well.

Isn’t he Australian, Jeff?

No, that’s Captain Boomerang. From DC comics.

Hey, random Goodreader?

Yes, Jeff?

I think Anne just posted a review.

Ooooooh, I’m clicking my way outta here. See ya, loser.

*le sigh*

This is a tale of two stories – the first, the Boomerang one is a keeper; the second, a coven of thieves stealing super hero devices, like Spidey’s web shooters and Captain America’s shield, not so much.

The Boomerang story harkens back to Spencer’s work on The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, bringing with it the wit and storytelling that made that such a great read. The only issue is the art – Humberto Ramos. Yechh and nuff said!

Boomerang, is of course, the worst roommate ever. Parker will probably get stuck with a sizable cable porn bill. Zoink!

So Boomerang takes Parker to the Bar with No Name for a Spider-Man trivia contest (!)…

…but stuff goes sideways, and The Liar (Heh), aka Peter Parker has to fight his way out of the bar.

The second story is about a coven of thieves who’ve been secretly around forever and suddenly reappear and start stealing superhero doodads.

Zounds! Did she say Tigra’s bikini!?! Holy @#$^!!

Anyway, it’s a team-up with the Black Cat and continuity stuff and ill will gets resolved.

Sort of. Basically (heh) Black Cat goes from Mob Boss back to thieving anti-hero.

Sure, why the hell not. One of the worst character arcs resolved in head scratching fashion.

The Friends and those Who Shack Up with Superheroes Support group sub plot was a decent concept that really didn’t go to the expected places -> Aw, shucks-ville instead of a say, co-dependent-women-who-slept-with-Hank-Pym group.

Though I could go for a cup of coffee and a chocolate cruller right about now and thanks for sharing.

Bottom Line : Boomerang was a bonanza of bountiful belly laughs. Black Cat was mostly hacky, hyperbolic, hedonistic humdrum.

Hooray for the hyphen:

Not quite as goofy as Spencer's Superior Foes of Spider-Man, but still a bit more sad sack than I like for Peter Parker. Spencer decides to play the book middle of the road. Maybe fearing a backlash by changing too much like he did with Captain America and the Secret Empire nonsense. This focuses on Pete's relationships with MJ, new roommate Boomerang, and Black Cat. I'm still not sold on Pete and MJ rekindling their romance for the gazillionth time. Boomerang as a roommate really grated on me at first but after Fred took Pete to the Bar with No Name for Spider-Man Trivia Night, I'm willing to give him another chance because it was a lot of fun. Bringing the Thieves Guild to New York reminded me of something that would have happened during J. Michael Straczynski's run. Spencer sets up this all encompassing, complicated mythology for something that probably belongs more in an X-Men book. Plus, all the heroes' weapons just disappearing out of thin air seemed more like magic than thievery. The end of the Black Cat story was a nice moment between Pete and Felicity.

Humberto Ramos seems to have toned down the chaos in his art. I really liked it. It had a lot more shading and detail to it than I've seen out of him. All in all, not a bad Spidey book, but it also hasn't hooked me like Dan Slott's epic run did.

"I've been in some jams. I've been hunted as a fugitive. I've been buried alive. I've been cloned . . . This has to be the most infuriating mess I've ever found myself in!" -- Peter Parker a.k.a. the amazing Spider-Man

Compared to the initial volume Back to Basics, the follow-up Friends and Foes is an improvement with its greater amount of both heart and humor. The above quote relates being caught in the middle of a bar fight, after Peter Parker (and not in the guise of his costumed alter ego) soundly trounces the competition in a Spider-Man trivia contest. Did I mention the many patrons of said establishment just happen to be B-list super-villains? It was crazy and fun. Elsewhere, girlfriend Mary Jane joins a clandestine support group for friends and loved ones of superheroes (leading to some well-written and quasi-realistic moments about the constant concern for someone in a dangerous avocation) and Black Cat then pounces in for an spirited appearance - concluding with a great rooftop conversation scene - in the final third of the volume. The series needs to keep swinging in this direction.

Whoa, color me impressed, Nick Spencer does a lot of fun plotlines in this volume.

Spidy first has to deal with going to a club with his roommate, boomarang. Sounds like fun times right? Except this club is filled with villains. The whole reason his best buddy brought him though is because they are doing Trivia night and it's all about Spider-man! Next up his Spider-man and Black Cat classic team up without the sexual moments. It's fun and exciting and we get to see new sides to MJ that we haven't seen in a LONG time. Also, the new villain makes an appearance again and he's not too happy.

It's obvious at this point Nick Spencer is in this for the long run. He has a huge Spider-man story to tell and he's leaving threads everywhere he goes. Most stories range from 2 issues to 3, but it works in his favor to tell a complete story while leaving clues on what could be next. I love the interactions with Spidy and most villains. Spider-man is also back to be funny again, which is great. The Peter and MJ stuff is really good as well. The villain behind this all seems really interesting. Sure, it's not brand new, and alot of it feels a bit safe, but it's good fun Spidy stories. A 4 out of 5.

Pretty quickly Spencer is getting there with his 'human' led Spidey stories. This volume sees some great bonding with Fred Myers... and a timely and much needed rationalisation of the Black Cat mob boss arcs recently as Black Cat and Spidey face the New York Thieves' Guild! Spencer also does some good work with MJ... and Jarvis! To top it off Ramos' art is becoming more cleaner and less manga-ish. All the points. 8 out of 12.

When Nick Spencer took over writing duties of The Amazing Spider-Man after a decade-plus run written by Dan Slott, what Spencer achieved in his first volume is essentially begin with a fresh start, which is appropriate, considering the title is part of Marvel’s “Fresh Start” relaunch, despite a few relaunches the publisher had done in recent years. Following the repercussions that Peter Parker went through in his history, most notably his former nemesis Doc Ock taken control of Peter’s body, the wall-crawler may have found a good starting point, such as a returning romance with Mary Jane Watson and sharing an apartment with Randy Robertson.

However, Peter’s life is never that simple as there are always ups and downs, including sharing an apartment with the supervillain Boomerang. Fred Myers’ actions as Boomerang are known to the public and although he claims that his days as a villain are behind him, Peter is not buying at all, especially when Fred suddenly invites his roommate to the Bar with No Name where some of Spidey’s worst enemies lay down their arms and drink together.

Having made readers laugh with Superior Foes of Spider-Man and eventually made those same people angry with Secret Empire, Nick Spencer gives us a Spidey story that isn’t going to piss anyone off. Evoking those titles, this two-issue sets up a funny dynamic between Peter and Fred, which is already built on conflict and during their time in this villain-based establishment, both characters find aspects about themselves and each other that are funny and touching.

Really feeling out of his comfort zone, Peter (who narrates throughout the volume) finds himself enjoying the company of his enemies as he wins Spider-Man Trivia Night. As for Boomerang, he still finds ways to show his villainy in unsuspecting ways, such as provoking Mayor Wilson Fisk, which leads to a huge brawl within the Bar. Spencer shows off his funny bone in the buddy comedy between Peter and Fred as towards the climax, truths are opened up about the latter’s need for friendship and how he’s trying to rectify past mistakes, something that Peter can relate to. Their relationship is still a bit rocky, but it’ll be interesting how Spencer progresses it.

In the next storyline, the Thieves Guild of New York led by Odessa Drake steals the limelight, in that they steal the most prized possessions from the likes of the Avengers, including Spidey’s web-shooters. As evil as it is, Spencer finds a sense of humour in the numerous panels featuring some of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes from Thor losing his hammer to Ghost Rider, who could’ve sworn he parked his car on that road. As Spidey is assigned by Tony Stark to uncover the stolen goods, he is reunited with the Black Cat herself, Felicia Hardy.

Although this arc involves the Avengers and an obscure villainous guild that goes back to early 90s Marvel, it works best when it’s about the intimacy as Spencer showcases the relationships Peter/Spidey has with both MJ and Black Cat. Through these two women, both with their own history with the web-slinger, which again has its ups and downs as MJ attends a support group meeting where she talks about her complicated relationship with Peter, whilst Black Cat has taken really dark turns that have made her hate Spider-Man. Amidst the convoluted history that has happened in Spidey’s life that is also affected his friends and loved ones, Spencer has able to work around it and finds a pleasant direction that shines a bright future for these relationships.

Following the first five issues of Spencer’s run that were illustrated by Ryan Ottley, Amazing Spider-Man regular artist Humberto Ramos returns to draw the wall-crawler's adventures. Although I do miss Ottley’s fresh visuals in the book, Ramos’ art is not entirely a bad thing as his cartoonish character designs with slightly weird body anatomy might not be to everyone’s liking, but he has improved over the years and never gets in the way of the emotional points that Spencer is trying to convey. As for the two guest artists, Steve Lieber and Michele Bandini are a nice addition in illustrating some of the dramatic subplots involving Boomerang and Mary Jane.

Spencer might still be teasing us from things he has set up from the beginning, most notably the presence of a brand-new villain who may or may not have a personal connection with our hero, but what achieves in this volume is progressing the relationships in Peter’s double life, whilst having a laugh amidst the superhero spectacle.

As per my usual, whenever a new writer comes along for Spider-Man, my shoulders rise and I fill my buckets full of hate. Not only was Spencer simply a new writer for Spidey, but he carried lots of bad publicity after the whole Captain America - Secret Empire thing. The first volume was trepidatious, with me emptying my buckets to the side (shoulders were still tight though.)

With the second volume, Spencer brought in his The Superior Foes of Spider-Man Omnibus a book I genuinely liked (although the joke went on a little too long.) For whatever reason, I enjoy seeing the loser villains in their boring lives, struggling to get by.

I also like how Spencer is approaching the Peter/MJ relationship. While I don't necessarily need them married, I feel they should be together and a couple issues in here directly address that in a way that makes sense and is realistic.

Something I didn't like: his portrayal of Kingpin. Just felt like a simple off their rocker, megalomaniac. This was overshadowed by the big villains that Spencer is building up to though.

There's also a vague sense of Slott's writing; multiple plots that don't have a lot of depth, simply to create that feeling of something constantly happening. I have no problems with many story threads, but when they all feel throwaway the book feels shallow.

At least interested now to see what comes next.

Lately, any comic or book that makes me laugh out loud more than once or twice, deserves one more star. So, there you go!

Great volume, and an even greater relationship between Peter and Boomerang, love where this is going. Makes me miss Superior Foes of Spider-Man.

Nice artwork too!

This was really good!

Spidey teams with Boomerang and well supervillain bar and face off with so many villains and I love how Spencer shows their friendship and like the commonality between them and also working on the redemption for Fred and building something up with Kingpin.

Meanwhile Pete and Black Cat team up to go after the thieves guild and their leader Odessa Drake who seems to have taken other heroes stuff and pose a big threat and so its a fun face off and also team up and revelations and unity of two former lovers and its a good short story and I love how Spencer gives team to Felicia and make her shine while also doing different storylines.

Its a really cool volume and expands on a lot of characters particularly MJ and what she is going through and showing she is the rock due to which Spidey can do stuff easily.

I really enjoyed this volume!

Bir süredir The Amazing Spider-Man serisini okumadığım için mi bilmiyorum ama çok beğendim. Bir önceki ciltte Spider-Man kendi normal hayatına dönmesi sevindirmişti fakat o saçma Peter ve Spider-Man'in bölünmesi hikayesi epey kötü bir tat bırakmıştı ağzımda.

Peter tüm bunlarla uğraşırken Mary Jane'in de süper kahraman yakınları destek grubuna katılması fikri güzeldi.

Still not getting into this run. This volume is full of Spider-Man barely suiting up and doing Spider-Man things, humor that falls flat, and boring plots. It also overwhelming feels like a safe, cartoony YA book rather than a normal comic. The art is fine for the most part, but there is a picture of peter taking off his mask near the end of issue 10 that has got to be the ugliest drawing of a face and head that I have seen in a comic for a long time. It looks like a rough draft that someone just colored in and sent to print.

Finally, comics are notorious for retelling the same stories over and over and over with slight variations (Dark Phoenix, Days of Future Past, the bajillion Crisis books over at DC, etc.) but Spider-Man has always been notoriously bad about this, and this run is no different. All of the same classic Spider-Man plots are being rehashed once more (including some that were retconned because they didn't work the first time around), and it's all getting pretty stale.

This volume was really good I loved the first story with Peter and Boomerang bonding I thought it was a lot of fun I hope Spencer continues to keep up their relationship. The second story with the thieves guild was really good, I loved seeing Spider-Man and Black Cat team up again I really wasn’t a fan of her being the big crime boss it didn’t fit her character. There were a lot of good moments with Mary Jane talking about her relationship with Peter which was really nice and reminded why I love them as a couple so much. Between bringing Peter and MJ back together and now fixing the damage done to Felicia’s character I’m really enjoying this run.

First up, it's Trivia Night at the Bar With No Name, and Boomerang wants Spidey to win the jackpot for him! Then, when superhero paraphernalia goes missing, Spidey and the Black Cat team up to battle the Thieves Guild! Plus, a superhero support group meeting...for Mary Jane?

Spencer's Spider-Man continues to chug along with these issues that are more about moving things around the board and setting up what's to come than being revolutionary stories on their own. The Trivia Night story is amusing, and gives Spencer the opportunity to revisit his excellent Superior Foes stories, while the new bug villain moves about in the shadows.

The Thieves Guild story rectifies Black Cat's status quo in a surprisingly clever way, bringing her back towards the side of the angels if not all the way over, and gives Mary Jane a nice little subplot that also brings back an unexpected supporting character as well. This is a good springboard for the upcoming Black Cat solo series, as well as giving MJ some much-needed panel time after being mostly absent from Spidey's world for the past few years.

Artwise, most of the issues here are pencilled by Spidey mainstay Humberto Ramos, while Steve Lieber returns for the Superior Foes pages of the first story, and Michele Bandini pencils the MJ storyline in the latter half. Ramos is an acquired taste that you already know if you like or not, while Bandini does an excellent job filling in - I hope we get more of them; they impressed me on X-Men Gold and Captain Marvel.

Nothing that'll stick in the memory too long, but a fun little ride with some good character work.

The first Spider-Man comic I ever bought and read was Amazing Spider-Man volume 2 #30, the debut of J. Michael Straczynski as writer for the wall-crawler's adventures, almost two decades ago. I already loved the character thanks to the 90s animated series and the Playstation games, but those comics introduced me to the real canon of who is still my favorite comicbook character to this day, and not only to many of his incredible stories but to comics in general, something I haven't read much before that. For a long time I enjoyed Straczynski's run in ASM. It had its ups and down (though I personally don't consider the affair of Gwen Stacy and her weird fast-growing children the awful sin that most people seem to think of it), but overall it was one of my favorite comics.

Then Dan Slott came around.

I'm sure there are many opinions and interpretations of what made the last season of Game of Thrones so hated by most fans of the show, but personally, I think one of the main points where the show fell short was in trying to fit the characters into certain events and plots that the producers of the show needed to make happen. If you read the source material, you surely know that's not how George R. R. Martin writes his stories. He doesn't adapt characters into events, he makes things happen because of his character's choices and actions. His main focus is always the characters, their personalities, their motivations, so that they move the story along.

Now, I wouldn't dare say that Dan Slott is a bad writer. But reading his work, it's clear that his main focus is on the events he wants to develop, and the characters are there to fit into those events and react to them. Sometimes, to make those events happen, just like in Game of Thrones, those characters need to do stuff that seems completely... out of character.

For ten long years, the main title from the most popular character of Marvel comics was written by a man who created a lot of awesome stories, but way too often for my taste misrepresented the ideals, the personality and the motivations of not only the protagonist but everyone around him at one point or another.

And then finally his grasp on the destiny of Peter Parker ended, and someone else had the chance to take the wheel. Enter Nick Spencer, coming right out of one of the most controversial runs of Captain America: Secret Empire (which I personally really enjoyed, despite all the hate it got from a lot of people).

I'm not saying that the writing styles of Straczynski and Spencer are similar in any way. They might. I haven't really stopped to analyze that deeply enough. But that's not my point anyway. I just know that for the first time in over a decade, I feel like MY Peter Parker, the amazing Spider-Man that I knew in the pages of "Coming Home" all the way back in the beginning of the century when I was a teenager discovering the magic of comicbooks, is finally BACK, baby!

I absolutely love the way his reignited relationship with Mary Jane is developing, the way he treats his friends and colleagues, the jokes he throw at his enemies, the tender moments with people like Boomerang and Black Cat, and the immense goodness that drives a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders to put others before his own needs and keep fighting to help and save anyone in need because he knows better than anyone that with great power there must also come great responsibility.

Spencer continues a fairly successful run, and I like what he's doing. I suppose in a way it's yet another "back-to-basics" take on Spidey, but I feel like this is a Peter I know and am familiar with, I love what he's done with MJ so far, the story that ruined that marriage was one that never should have been told in the first place so anything that puts Peter and MJ together is great by me.

But I've also enjoyed seeing Spencer put his stamp on each of relationships that we see Peter engage in so far in his run. And that's what it's mostly been about: Peter's relationship with MJ, with Aunt May, with Fred (Boomerang) and Felicia (Black Cat) this volume, etc. And I feel like he nails the character work.

Just wondering though. I've been a Spider-Man fan for a very, very, long time and I cannot remember anytime before the last little bit that there were so many stupid jokes about Peter being obsessed with Spider-Man being hyphenated. When did that start up? Because, if it wasn't out of nowhere in the last year or so I have no idea where that came from.

Far more successful than the first volume, not least because the first couple of issues go right back to Spencer's excellent, ridiculous work on the Superior Foes spin-off, even bringing in Steve Lieber for some of the art. The next three are ever-so-slightly more serious, with some wonderful character moments for various of Peter's exes (not least MJ, who of course may once again be a current...), but the tone was never going to get too heavy while you have the Thieves' Guild attempting to get taken seriously by stealing heroes' equipment, including stuff like nabbing Cap's shield in mid-throw, and Spidey teaming up with the semi-reformed Black Cat to get it all back. Plus! Parker turns out to share my own annoyance with people who forget the hyphen in Spider-Man. Sure, there are still odd background moments with that undead/demon bod, and hints of Something Ominous Impending, but not enough to spoil the general caper tone of it all.

Spider-Man lends itself to emotional clarity and sweetness as much as it does to humor and zany bad guys, and Nick Spencer does a great job at providing this in this otherwise disposable volume. We get to see some great absurd shenanigans involving Peter Parker (that's right, not Spider-Man) getting wrapped up with a bar full of dejected baddies, a cult of thieves stealing all the valuables from every superhero across the catalog, and ever more glimpses of the yet unrevealed mysterious foe. But despite lacking a clear throughline storywise, this volume makes up for it with a great assortment of clever, funny, heartwarming Spider-Man stories.

Disappointing. Firstly, 2 issues centered around Boomerang, Spencer tries to capitalize on his good "Superior foes..." run but the heart's not there anymore and Boomie's charming act is wearing thin.
Then three issues with an omnipotent thieve's guild popping out of nowhere; thanks but no, thanks. The whole lore around the guild felt contrived at best, ridiculous more like. Even the sharing group MJ attends to feels emotionally forced to an obvious conclusion.
Such blandness from the infamous "Hail Hydra" guy, that's somehow ironic.
Some good lines overall but not enough to save this corny (lack of) plot.

Humberto Ramos on the board does a great job but the fill-in artist working with him on some pages just isn't on the same level and it shows.

Návštěva baru plného superpadouchů a obnova vztahu s Black Cat.

Pretty good but nothing spectacular. Nick Spencer's back to basics approach continues to be a breath of fresh air for the character. I enjoyed how Spencer played with the readers expectations in the first volume. Even I though we were getting another crazy status quo change or yet another take on the clone saga. But instead Spencer is simply putting back the threads that have made Peter Parker aka Spidey a mainstay for countless. Spencer here is simply reminding fans that Pete's supporting cast are equally as important as his amazing adventures. This book opens with a few stories of Peter diving into the world of his foes. This all occurs through the eyes of one of Spidey's B-list villains, Boomerang. Fans of Spencer's Superior Foes of Spider-man will find a bit of this territory familiar. I really enjoyed the humor and it showcases how compassionate Spidey can be even to his villains. After all Spider-man is a guy of second chances. The later half of the book focus on two of the most important women in Peter's life. I can already here the fan shippers ready to battle it out over these ladies. Spencer ties up many of the unresolved status quo changes from the Dan Slott era of Spider-man. I happen to be a fan that did enjoy some of the ideas Slott brought to the Spider-man mythos. However i feel Slott's run should have ended after Superior Spider-man and Spider-verse. The final arc of the book sees Spidey teaming up with super thief, Black Cat to take-down the Thieve's Guild of New York who have in a totally embarrass the superhero community by stealing their weapons, gadgets or other items of significance. For many fans Black cat was at one time the love of Pete's life. Its fun to remind us what makes the Black Cat and Spider-man dynamic so great. Spencer adds a great parallel to the main arc by telling a compelling small story about Mj's coping with being the normal human lover of a superhero. Spencer does a great job of posing the question: Should heroes date other heroes or is it more interesting to see how these larger than life character's thrive in normal relationships. Its funny Spencer is really doing what old Marvel use to do so well and that is just tell a great hero's journey tale. The artwork by Ramos is good but a bit too sketchy for me at times. But with the colors and great pacing of Spencer's writing this series is building towards some really excellent Spider-man stories yet to come. In short Amazing Spider-man is amazing again. The only thing marvel needs to do is cut down on the amount Spidey books. I mean we now have Friendly neighborhood, Suoerior, Miles Morales, SpiderGwen, and etc.. I am not keeping up with all of this.

Amazing Spider-Man vol 2 carries on the new age of Spider-Man post Dan Slott and I think is another really good volume for the webhead. Within are five issues in total with two story arcs across those five. One in which Spidey goes to the bar with no name for a Spider-Man trivia night and it develops the Fisk/Kindred plot from vol 1 on top of using Boomerang one of Spidey's roommates in an excellent comedic fashion while also paying tribute to the Superior foes of Spider-Man for the fans out there. Called A Trivial Pursuit

The second arc: Heist is about the guild of thieves who were an old wives tale but they've now made a move in a big way: by stealing things from every superhero! It's a fun premise that does everything it can in three issues, while at the same time Mary Jane has a plot of her own when she joins the Lookups a civilian support group for the close and loved ones of Super heroes.

The art is penciled by Humberto Ramos and Michele Bandin who both do a good job though I love Bandini's work as she covers the Mary Jane half of the story smoothly. And Ramos has been on Spider-man for years so I've always got a spot for him.

The two arcs are about second chances. remembering, and how vital (and annoying) those around you are. I think it's another good volume, good enough for those who didn't like the first and certainly good enough for me to continue reading.

4 stars.

Dalších 5 sešitů Spencerova runu a furt super.

So these are the "off-issues" and no surprise for the typical bloated Marvel schedule. they are also the mediocre ones. No Ottley here, so we're revisiting the tried and true Spider-Art of Humberto Ramos. I like the guy, but I want Spencer and Ottley's book, and Ramos takes me right back to echoes of yesteryear's Spider-Books. Seeing Lieber for those few pages was great though, and Boomerang as Pete's roommate is truly one of my favorite things in this title.

Both arcs fall a little flat, failing to clue us in on Spencer's new big bad, or follow up on any Kraven stuff. I am well aware though that those threads will be picked up in the next, proper Ottley volume. In the meantime, the Lookups and the big Black Cat reveal did work to drive the heart of this title up. Still enjoyed myself, even as I lean further away from capes in my comics due to that ever-present industry bloat.

A step up from the first volume. I don't care for Boomerang as a roommate, but the whole "Spider-Man Trivia Night" at the Bar With No Name was pretty good, and Fred even saves Pete's life. I also liked the idea of the support group for the friends and loved ones of superheroes. Art was nice throughout. I just wish Pete hadn't fallen so far from his previous life--it was a lot easier to believe him as a tech mogul than a struggling whatever he is now, at this point in his life. I'll keep reading.
