Forbidden is a book that raises the stakes even higher than we saw in the first novel of the series, BlindSpot. The author is back with his usual fast-paced, action packed, thrill ride. And boy, is this a page turner. The main protagonist is someone you can truly empathise with, as she struggles with her faith, and path of justice. I was enthralled by the action sequences in this novel, but equally impressed with the more philosophical sections of the book. The author has a real command of his story, and I simply cannot wait for more.
Spoiler-free! I received an advanced reader copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review and re-read it again from 14 to 16 December of 2021 and read both version on my kindle.
This books moves like it has somewhere to be! With each chapter hovering around about 2,000 words, it’s too easy to crush a few chapters at a time. It took me two calendar days and about six hours to read this.
Cybernetic enhancements on organized crime gangsters? Check.
Angels? Check.
Noir detective work and a cop procedural? Check and check!
It sounds like a genre salad but it’s not. Kent Shawn ties together a series of ideas that shouldn’t work—and he does it in a way that feels totally natural.
At its heart, this book is a detective story with the above ideas mixed in. The protagonist works to try and rid Los Ángeles of a dangerous criminal syndicate that has itself dug into the bones of the city. The problem for her is that her very human boss is at odds with what heaven and angels want her to do—and we get to watch her try and figure out which “right” is best while unable to share her secret mandate given to her by heaven.
Lucifer himself has a role to play as well. The master of lies plays people against one another for his own gains in a scheme that simmers beneath the surface of the main story. Unlike classic Bible stories about the Morning Star, Lucifer acts more like a rogue third party here. We get to watch him do his own thing and we can’t help but root for him. That’s how well his character is written.
The very and non-religious alike can read and enjoy this action-filled novel. You won’t find any guilt trips here—just a great thriller.
Kent Shawn is getting better which each novel and this one ends leaving us wanting to know what happens next. Don’t pass on this if you’re looking for a quick read that’ll get your blood pumping! It’s worth the full price of the five or six bucks it’ll set you back when the rest of the readers here discover this story.
I loved Kent's first book in the series 'Blindspot', I thought it was original, fast-paced with some amazing characters and irresistible villains, which is why I couldn't wait to read the follow-up sequel Forbidden. This story follows Harriet Hardy, still reeling after being chosen as the new savior, and still mentally trying to process what happened to her friend and mentor Jon Benz, in the first book. Kent really puts Harriet through the wringer, the stakes are raised higher and higher with every page turn, and I flew through this novel. I'm just so happy that the author is a fast writer, as the next book will be out soon! This book has a bit of everything, action, tension, amazing flawed characters (Harriet's journey is insane) an incredible take on Lucifer, and there is even a little bit of romance! I can't wait for the next book!
