I started this one despite the blurb describing a super dubious consent issue, which isn't typically my thing. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised!

More detail comes later in the series that clears up the consent issue and makes it all well worth sticking around for. If you pick this up, don't stop after this book. Be sure to read all three. It's sweet and steamy, with a lovely story of bisexual awakening.

After a workplace incident forced her to quit her job, Koduka ended up in a deep depression and three months behind on her rent. Her landlady comes calling and offers to exchange sex for her assistance with Koduka’s problems. Except her problems might just be beginning…

This seems to be a week where books are pulling a fast one on me based on the expectations they’re setting with their descriptions. Make no mistake, Koduka is over a barrel here and she does indeed take Landlady (I will be referring to her as such for the review because of reasons) up on her offer.

So this is clearly about to be some smutty book where an older woman is forced into trading sex for rent as she struggles to figure out her life… or is it?

Turns out that this story’s really good. There’s definitely an uncomfortable viewing of this where Landlady used her leverage over Koduka to get sex, but there’s more to that story and Koduka did technically agree to it (and not get drunk beforehand, at that). It is most certainly not just its premise.

Koduka is a disaster - she is clearly grappling with depression after her job went sideways and everything about her life has fallen down in the meantime. So when Landlady offers her this extensive favour system to provide ongoing debt relief for services of any kind, not just sexual, Koduka says yes and gets a roomie in the bargain (which may not make sense on paper, but I assure you this might be the only manga where this actually makes a modicum of sense to occur).

The two make quite the pair because Koduka’s (supposedly) straight and has no intention of repeating their night of passion, but it turns out that Landlady has no intention of doing so either. Which might seem weird, except these are layered characters that spend literally 90% of the volume in an apartment and are still really interesting.

Landlady is not straight and very up front about that, but, while she certainly did the deed with Koduka, she turns out to have a lot of regret (and general melancholy about the loneliness her orientation has caused her). And it might just be that she’s after something more than sex (we actually know this pretty early on). There’s a lot of hinting that the reason Landlady regrets the sex is because her feelings run a lot deeper and the offer might have been an opening she took, to her own dismay.

Which ends up leaving us with two people who might just be saving one another and the balance of power there is only such because, domestically, Landlady is a far more put-together adult, but her caring for Koduka ends up setting the latter back on a path towards functioning adult.

It’s always great to see a yuri book that doesn’t shy away from lesbian issues and Landlady has an absolutely awkward encounter at the mall that features some nasty prejudice (beware the well-meaning, yet ignorant high school acquaintance) and features Koduka both standing up for a friend, yet also being forced to confront some truths about herself.

Not to say it isn’t silly - it is (this is probably the only time I’ve laughed at anybody playing a Mario Kart clone). Or very awkwardly charming - it is. Or isn’t steamy at times, cuz it certainly is. And hey, I have massive respect for a book that starts off about sex and isn’t super tawdry about it, but also doesn’t pull a huge fake-out later on like somebody being too tired or chickening out and it never actually happened.

Do I want to read more of this? Oh yes. Awkward set-up aside, this is tackling things in a way I haven’t seen yuri do before and both these characters make a great pairing and are good on their own besides. Neither outshines the other and that’s a job well done in my book.

4 stars - is the essential reading? No, probably not. It has a premise that you may not be able to see past, but there’s a lot more to this than meets the eye and, whatever I was expecting, what I got was a lot more nuanced than those expectations.

Did I see this at work and immediately put one to the side for myself because it had two females on the cover and was marketed as a slow-burn romance?? Maybe

I'm excited to see where the series goes. It's really fun and cute and if you get the chance I would suggest picking it up (but only my girls, gays, and theys)- I don't want no hetero boys sexualizing this too much cause I want to enjoy some silly lesbian shit pls and thanks.

this was much cuter than I expected, though not perfect - the premise was definitely uncomfy for me. it starts off with koduka being drunk and depressed after losing her job and burning through her savings....hara, her younger landlady, comes and propositions her for sex / 'favors' in return for her not having to pay rent. they even quickly move in together because of this, which is a weird predatory power imbalance that nearly ruins this. thankfully, it turns into a super cute (if a bit ecchi) exploration of the 'forced proximity' trope. hara definitely seems to have some previous knowledge and feelings about koduka, which makes the pining very sweet. while their situation does stem from that uncomfy start, hara does hold back and even stops koduka multiple times when she seems to be feeling overwhelmed. hara also quickly seems to feel very remorseful, ending with a heartfelt apology. there are even some more serious topics tackled, like homophobia/prejudice, setting this apart from a lot of the super fluffy GLs I've read with the 'yuri paradise' trend.

tldr; icky premise, but a surprisingly cute and also steamy romance with some super sweet scenes. the art is also amazing imo - I really love the style.

Ah, the ever-classic drunken one night stand meet-cute.

The premise of the landlady's "service" contract is so out there it can never happen, but it's so logical (albeit slightly illegal I believe) that it's oddly believable. At least in manga that is. While it is an odd start to a relationship, it works.

The story flowed well and the characters were realistic and complimentary to one another, and the mystery of Landlady-san's affection for Koduka is curious, it left me wanting to know more. One little irk for me though was that Koduka was a bit of a crybaby. And please know I don’t say that lightly as I myself can be emotional at the worst and best of times lol.

The art was cute and airy and didn't show anything particularly naughty in detail but I would recommend this manga for mature minded readers. But I guess the title is a hint at that already, wink.

i didn’t know anything about this diving in and i’m just glad i didn’t have to pay for it because it read like a landlord’s sexual power fantasy passed off as “but i love her uwu” to excuse the multiple crimes happening. also i hate landlords and they deserve the guillotine. where’s robespierre? 😂

How alcohol made me my landlady's roomie.

When the young landlady come for the 3 months of back rent Koduka Chiyo is not in her right mind having consumed far to much alcohol after quitting her job at a video game company. Given the choice to do favors for the landlord of an intimate nature to reduce her debt Chiyo discovers herself waking next to her in bed even though she is not into women. Did the landlady do something wrong by using her power to convince a drunk Chiyo to sleep with her while she was drunk? Yes, Yes she did and in the real world there would be legal consequences (especially considering the debt reduction contract which could have been used as evidence. However this is also a story about one heartbroken woman (from what I guessed by her quick glimpse into the past about why she quit) and a younger woman who has never really found love thanks to society labeling her as abnormal for liking other girls trying to make a connection with one of her tenants whom she believes she is in love with and comes up with this terrible but strangely effective plan so they can get to know each other better and maybe even get closer.

Regardless of the terrible reasoning of a 19 year old landlady using sexual favors as a means to pay back rent (although she often marks off parts of the debt for non intimate reasons too) I do like the chemistry between the landlady and Chiyo as they begin to do more together and fill the gaps they find lacking in their own lives as Chiyo discovers herself trying to be there more for the landlady as best she can. I can't say too much more to avoid some spoilers but between the character interactions and nice art style I really enjoyed this book.

Quick and easy reading. Even though the plot starts rather fast, you can feel the development throughout the chapters. Good volume to start to know the characters, for more depth you need to read volume 2. Besides the provocating name and plot, this volume is a sweet and light.

I would also recomend because of the beautiful art!

Okay I am obsessed. They are precious and again, the embodiment of gay panic. I love the silly little premise, I love the angst and how simple acts of kindness translate to favors in the Landlady’s head. Also the characterization is amazing and I love how she reacts to certain things based on her sheer amount of loneliness. Also our lead Chiyo being in her mid twenties and feeling like she doesn’t have shit figured out is so relatable and endeared me so much to her.

It's girls love, it's funny and cute, I liked it! The storyline/idea is quite humorous but if you keep that in mind going in it's fun, and I liked following the characters, watch them get closer and discover more about themselves and each other.

2.5 Stars.
I've decided to try and see how risque a few "usually in sealed bags at Barnes and Noble" manga are, but under the stipulation I can get them through the public library. I Can't Believe I Slept With You was a title I saw on the shelf at a local bookstore. Paging through it briefly, I realized it was yuri (manga focusing on romantic/sexual relationships between women) and thought I'd add it to my test. This is the third title I tested.

Chiyo is an unemployed 24 year old. Recently having lost her job, she can no longer afford to pay her rent. The landlady has a unique solution: have sex with her. A drunken hook up later, and Chiyo can't believe she agreed to it. So Landlady (we don't find her name is Ritsuka till almost the last page of this Volume) alters the deal to "favors" (21 of them), which can be anything she determines, such as a very nice long hug, a dinner out, or as much as sex. By the end of the first Volume, Chiyo, who couldn't believe she would be into a woman, has started to come around to the idea and it seems as if in future Volumes they will most likely end up together.

I think I know what is trying to be accomplished by this story (though I could be totally wrong) but I was very put off by the financial manipulation of this down-on-her-luck character. Landlady is very cold and emotionless for the most part (at least in my opinion) and though their burgeoning relationship is supposed to feel awkward and odd, it just didn't sit right with me.

There are too many elements that don't work for me to continue reading this title. Look into it for yourself if anything seems like something you'd enjoy.

I wasn't sure about the setup for this story since it seems like the kind of situation where someone would be taken advantage of, but the story ended up being a lot sweeter then I expected.

It's a very well written and tender story. The sort of comfortable read you might like while curled up in warm blankets and wanting to just be warm and happy.

It's very cute and the characters are written very well. The art is very warm and inviting. This was a surprise read for me, but a great one. It's certainly a very memorable work of GL.

Was TERRIFIED this book was going to be the usual openly gay character courting the in denial closeted gay. And at first….. IT WAS. But as you kept reading the manga you find that the relationship between both characters becomes much more…domestic. Very happy this wasn’t one of those yuri manga where one of the characters is basically harassing the closeted gay. Very cute easy read. :)

i wouldn't call it wholesome persay but despite the odd premise and strange dynamics, chiyo koduka and her landlady may actually have a pretty sweet relationship in their future

be aware this series includes: partial nudity, sexual innuendos and language and decent amounts of fanservice

3.5☆

Okay this was lowkey much better than I expected. I got this off a Pride Month blind date event and I was really disappointed at first, because Ecchi isn't my genre at all... Especially since one of the main characters looks like a child and the main topic of this manga is sex 😭

Well positive impressions first: The dynamic between the main characters is really cute and I LOVE domestic relationships. So, besides the plot, I really enjoyed reading this!

// CONTENT SPOILER WARNING //

The plot though... Not only does this story start out with non-consensual sex, since of the girls is black out drunk and doesn't remember a thing, but the whole setting is also VERY unrealistic, meaning it's solely contructed for them to have sex. At least there are story chapters and they aren't banging chapter after chapter, but I think I would've enjoyed this more if they actually got to know each other. Because now you see, I hate "work based" relationships with distant characters, I hate age gaps in romance manga and I hate porn settings, where everything is solely focused on the sexual part. The size difference is kind of cute, I think I might like that, but besides that it's really not my cup of tea

Overall: Could've definitely been worse, I won't buy the next volume though...

From the title, I was expecting more sex, but I liked the way things are going.

Twenty-four-year-old Koduka Chiyo quits her job and is three months behind on her. Her landlady will reduce the costs and help her, if she has sex with her. Which happens, but Koduka doesn't have much memories about it, because she was drunk, though she has flashes of memory later on. Each time Koduka does something for the Landlady she will cross off a number on the calendar.

As we continue in the manga, is it hinted that the Landlady has feelings for Koduka, which could be the reason as to why she is doing what she. The Landlady also seems more put together than Koduka, such as cleaning and cooking, which one wouldn't expected mostly because Koduka is older.

I picked this up because of the premise was different and the characters were older instead of high school. I wonder the LandLady met Koduka before somewhere and thats why she already has romantic feelings, which Koduka is completely obviously about.

I am not sure how many volumes this will be but I am looking forward to see where it is going and how their relationship changes.

A sweet but worrisome older woman named Chiyo falls into a bit of a depressive slump after a simple mistake cost her the career of her dreams. Her pretty but straightforward landlady is on her case about the high rent not getting paid on time. They strike a deal where the landlady agrees to forgive her absent payments in exchange for romantic favors and dates.

Initially I didn't like where this story seemed to be heading but it turned out to be surprisingly good in the end. What could have been a creepy abuse of power and authority over a struggling unemployed woman turns out to be a surprisingly uplifting romance story where both women genuinely try to lift each other out of hard times, get their lives back on track and find happiness together.

They have a bit of a history together and the unusual deal they agree to is completely consensual and made with good intentions on both ends of the spectrum. It turns out there’s been more going on between them in their personal lives than meets the eye so the additional context throughout the plot changed my feelings towards the characters and their arrangement for the better.

So I want to start with the dissatisfaction of the introduction of the so called “deal/contract” it was far too short for me. I understand why it was written the way it was, basically to help set the mood of Chiyo making an embarrassing decision she doesn’t remember while drunk, however I still think there should have been more of a tone set up in the beginning vs a chapter or two in.

Don’t get me wrong though, I still enjoyed the manga and will be reading the second one for sure! I was just almost turned off to it after the first few pages gave me the wrong impression. I’m hoping we get more explanation to some plot holes like the landlady secretly being in love with Chiyo, but having no interaction with her…that we know of besides paying and being late on rent. Unless Chiyo has some mind blowing skills that’ve made her fall in love after one hook up lmao.

This manga is so cute (*꒦ິ꒳꒦ີ)

At the beginning, I will admit that I was somewhat worried there would be an unhealthy power dynamic, seeing as how the story revolves around a landlady and her tenant, specifically the former's one-sided love towards her, but a point is made to ensure that consent is followed and that she does not make the former do something she is uncomfortable with. This aspect is very much appreciated, as I have seen several yuri mangas refrain from even considering consent when writing relationships.

Towards the end, it is clear that Koduka starts to question if she has feelings for Hara, as she realizes after their kiss that she enjoyed it. Alternatively, Hara notes that she "can't go back" to the way things were previously. This sets up an excellent cliffhanger for the next volume, which will hopefully bring the two closer to having an actual relationship.
