With creative direction and world-building by the inimitable Yoko Taro, the mind behind the NieR and Drakengard universes, comes...
SINoALICE , a gorgeous and gory mobile RPG that blurs the line between dreams and reality, fairy tales and fact!
And now you can read the manga adaptation of the popular game!
A loving family, a dear friend, and a secret crush...
Everything about Alice's life as a high school girl was perfectly ordinary. Pleasant. Mundane. Until one day, the mysterious Red Riding Hood chopped her family to bits!
With her whole family dead, Alice has no more will to live. Just as she's about to leap from the hospital roof to her doom, two creepy marionettes from her dreams pop up to relay a startling The only way for Alice to get her family back is to play a death game—and win!
A continuation from the previous volume and I would say better written since they added a lot more of the characters and more of the plot so the reader has some intrigue compared to the previous of the volume where it was very confusing for newcomers.
Hell, this was still was confusing because they don't tell you the rules these characters have to play by! It's partly because the dolls didn't tell Alice so they don't want to tell the reader but it makes it very hard to follow. Even for me: someone who played the game until it shut down.
But enough about that, look at my wife:
God... I love and miss Cinderella. She is my queen.
you can love a character and still admit when they're wrong. I love Cinderella but can acknowledge her flaws (she has none) & can hold her accountable for her wrongdoings (she’s never done anything wrong in her life) & call her out for her actions (which are always correct)
this book and the author is so weird why would they turn SA on a minor into manga, overly sexualised and gross, wasted my time reading this if you enjoy these books get a life, especially one person on goodreads warning the book for SA on a minor then later saying the book is the best volume yet. WEIRDOS.
I wish I could give this a higher rating. In terms of storytelling, this manga series is highly engaging in terms of how suspenseful it can get. There are interesting characters and a sense that this story could transform into more of a battle of wits between the characters that actually have a grounded sense of what's going on with the death-match game. It's interesting to see how these particular characters manipulate the wishes of others to get what they're after themselves.
However, the problem for me, like last time, comes down to how the explicit sexual themes are so in your face that the good qualities of the story rapidly careen off a cliff. There were times in this particular manga where I was basically Phoebe from Friends screaming, "MY EYES!" in abject horror. And ultimately, it's just too much. Once again, there's a short story included in text that's much more engaging simply because the visual element isn't there. A part of me feels like this series would have been better off as a light novel series rather than a manga. The short story in this volume gives additional backstory details about Cinderella, which was a good addition. I'm not sure if every edition of this manga series has the short stories available, but I will plainly say that those short story portions end up being the best parts of the two volumes I have read, as they give additional context that the manga doesn't feel like delving into. In terms of the actual story, volume 2 is better than volume 1 but it gets 2 stars from me because I feel this series has gone overboard with the explicit scenes. Even though I generally like the stories these two volumes have told...I don't think I could read volume 3 knowing that the content I don't want to see might get amped up even further. It's really a shame. This story really had potential to be great, and volume 3 is supposed to focus on Snow, my favorite character from the mobile game. The disappointments never end it seems.
I feel this one was a bit better than the last one. The story still isn't the most concise and there are a lot of characters being thrown at you with minimal explanation. This isn't particularily odd if you take a look at the game it's based on - the characters get minimal characterization with some voice lines and that's it. At least we got some actual interesting characters in this volume. I like Pinocchio and the backstory that was very very vaguely hinted at. (I'm getting some vibes that he's trans? Terrified of how they're gonna handle that in the future, though. Not well, as I suspect.) I guess he's somehow indebted to Snow White and about as assertive as a wet sponge, which, y'know, I get it. Puppet and all. But the story of Pinocchio wasn't about a puppet on strings without any free will. Again one of those concepts that look and sound cool but don't hold any water on closer inspection. I genuinely kind of liked Red Riding Hood a little better in this one cause we actually got to see her motivations a little bit and how her mind works. But, uh, the alleyway scene was... well. I don't mind sexual themes but I did have a few "what the fuck" moments in this volume.
What is wrong with this manga? Like, seriously. I haven't been enjoying it at all and I had been really looking forward to the game once I finish Reincarnation (I know it won't be a while, but still, can't handle two games like that at the same time) The story's all over the place, but I get that it's just the beginning, however, the pointless violence and ridiculous sexualization of the characters is crazy and there's so many moments in which it felt so pointless and forced, it's really off-putting to me, specially when I'm guessing at least half of the characters are just kids and I'm not even sure about the other half. Also, I was expecting some deep reflection about our society, some existential struggle or something, since Yoko Taro's involved somehow, in Goodreads he appears as the author, although in the cover it just says original concept, but so far the manga's really shallow... dark, twisted and all, but full of common places and no real depth. I think I'll just give the third volume a chance since I preordered it a while ago, but so far I'm really not enjoying this.
This volume is decently better than the first, but it still suffers from pretty much all of the same problems. It focuses too much on sexual violence shock value, the story jumps around a little too much, and I have no idea where it's going.
And most importantly: I still have no idea what the hell is going on!!!
Once again: are these characters supposed to be the same ones from the games, who are literally fairy tale characters, or are they they're own people? I'm still assuming that these are characters who *aren't* them but the ones from the game somehow took them over or something, I have no idea. I'm holding out hope that it will all be explained soon, but it is way too confusing right now.
I'm gonna finish this series, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to be experiencing so far. I enjoy a decent amount of it at least.
There's a lot of characters in this manga. While some of them are recurring, there seems to be a lot of backstory and some of it isn't well explained. This does make it quite challenging to follow. I like the premise, so I'm going to keep going. But right now I'm not sure if I understand what all is happening in this manga.
Just a hot mess of a series. Tons of fairy tale characters thrown in. No clear understanding of what game is being played, what are the rules, and what is happening in the world(s) where this is set. Two volumes and I'm done.
I am still so confused about this series..... I’m not mad, though. In the end, I’m probably gonna wait till more volumes are out because I’m getting angry that I don’t know what’s going on.
