Dexter meets Ace of Spades in this YA thriller with an unreliable narrator battling against her own mind.
“He would pay dearly, and the price was his life”- Indigo
Indigo Lewis had hoped her freshman year at Titus University would be a fresh start where she could put the ugliness of her past behind her.
Then she saw him.
Mr. Chestnut; an unassuming predator, is up to his old tricks. Someone has to stop his reign of terror, and the voices assure Indigo there's no one better fit for that grisly task than her. She must divide her focus between her social life, two men who are vying for her heart that are impossible to choose between, and keeping up with the rigor of college academics.
When a horrific event rocks her family to the core, Indigo questions what means the most to her and who she has allowed herself to become. Scrutinizing her sanity, secrets are spilled and new graves are dug. Can Indigo keep her loved ones safe? Or will she lose herself to dark whispers urging her to do unspeakable things?
If readers thought that Forty Two Minutes took a unique, albeit dark look into the stigma surrounding mental health, they ain't seen nothin' yet! Author Janay Harden ups the ante through her second book; Someone More Like Myself, drawing more parallels between Indigo Lewis and her mother, Sonia. As Indigo tackles college, she is unexpectedly triggered by seeing an old face. A face that represented abuse and neglect and if readers know Indigo Lewis, they know she is not one to forget when someone has been wronged. With suspenseful moments after each chapter, you find yourself asking, what is Indy going to do next? Someone More Like Myself takes readers on a roller coaster ride of emotion and vengeance. A must-read!
Book 2 didn't pull any punches. College is a whole beast and your girl wasn't ready. The struggle Indigo has in fitting in just aa normal kid, add that to needing therapy to try and find a way to deal with her mental illness, the scary urge to kill again and worse off is the pedophile from her previous school having followed her and now they are in the sane area. Will she fall in? Will the voices let up? Can she just fall in love with the boy she likes and be normal? I loved how yoh wondered all through and how it all goes down. It's well paced, hooks you in and you can't not cheer for the girl trying to make sense of it all.
*I was sent this book free for an honest review. This book is about many things, family, mental health, murder, friendship and more. It highlights the need for better mental health support from someone who is an expert in the field. On a lighter note it is humorous and entertaining. I throughly enjoyed this page turner and was left wanting more. This author is doing great things and I cannot wait to read more of her work. Outstanding in my humble opinion.
The transition to college can be rough, especially when the troubles and difficulties from home constantly weigh you down. Then, you top all this off with a person coping with auditory hallucinations and homicidal tendencies.
My heart aches for Indy and all that she is carrying. I'm completely invested and look forward to the next installment in this series.
I was not ready for the ride in book 2. The one thing that got on my nerves was Theodora's parents and how rude they were. I just want Indy to win and to get a hold of her mental health. I was shook at the ending.
