From award-winning author, Santana Saunders comes The Gritty One, book two of the urban fantasy duology.
It’s the gritty ones that make a pearl.
After plague, earthquakes, tsunamis and demons nearly destroyed humanity, Leora Smith never imagined she would leave the safety of the rural town she helped build from the ground up. But resources dwindle and famine strikes, leaving her people weak and desperate. As hungry eyes look for someone to blame, upheaval erupts. Tempers flare amongst the panicked survivors and they struggle to hold onto hope- until they hear from the outside world.
Another society exists. They are thriving, or so they say. Leora is faced with an impossible decision- Stay and risk all of her people dying of starvation or go and risk losing everything to a group of people they don’t know.
It’s up to Leora to keep the faith alive and protect them from the worst nightmares of evil embodied in those who walk among them- by any means.
Santana Saunders grew up along the Missouri River in North Dakota, where the sandbars were far-off lands and the canoes were pirate ships.
Santana went on to pursue a career in business development, and creative writing went on the back burner. In 2019, she and her family relocated from the midwest to the coast. Sandbars and canoes quickly became beaches and ocean. This change of scenery inspired her to return to writing.
Today, she is a U.S. based author of fantasy romance novels. When she isn’t reading or writing stories, she is playing at the beach with her husband and three daughters or attempting a DIY home project that will take weeks longer than anticipated.
Ohhh what a suspenseful sequel to The Pearl in the Darkness. I enjoyed the first book of this series, but I loved the second book. In The Gritty One we get to know these characters on a more deeper level as they navigate life and rebuild their community while facing threats inside their own walls as well as outside them. There are quite a few twists and turns that keep you turning pages so much so that I finished this book in 2 days! What I liked most about this book is the love triangle in this book and seeing these characters grow into the leaders that they are. I loved Santana’s writing and can really see how she has grown from book one. I’m anxious to read more from her as she can only go up from here!

I’m not one to read fantasy but this end times novel series is one that I have become connected with and one I would recommend to anyone whether fantasy is a genre they normally love or not.
This sequel was fantastic! I felt like I was watching the characters through the book develop and become the leaders they were destined to be.
I love the way the book is told in multiple points of view and that my favorite character from Book 1, Hollis, who is the main character’s (Leonora) BFF, has his own POV.
This book has plenty of action and drama. It has romance and some twists that kept me on my toes as a reader.
You could read this one as a stand-alone but I think the backstory that you get from book one would make reading book one at some point beneficial.
After reading the first book in this series, The Pearl in the Darkness, I could NOT wait to get my hands on this second (and final) book. I don’t want to give to much information about the story line, but it is an absolute must read!!
