The Leander Welles Series #4

The Wrath of Leander Welles

Rate this book
Wrath — strong vengeful anger or indignation; retributory punishment for an offense or a crime.

They say love makes you do crazy things. In Bennett Reeve’s case that is the understatement of a century. Reunited with the love of his life, he will stop at nothing to ensure all of Leander’s dreams come true. There’s just one little problem — Dr. Lorelei Clayton. Until she’s gone, Leander will never truly be his. Having lost Leander once already, Bennett will be damned if he stands by and lets it happen again.

Exonerated from the four murders in his hometown, Leander Welles returns to Easton to pick up the pieces of his life. Before he can rest easy, there are few loose ends that need to be tied up. But as everyone knows, for every action there is a reaction and Leander unknowingly sets off a chain of events that even he cannot control. With each new death, he learns a painful lesson — when you’re the villain, there is no such thing as happily ever after.

International best-selling and award-winning author Ashlyn Drewek has always been fascinated by "weird" things like Edgar Allan Poe, Halloween, and witchcraft. Not necessarily in that order. But she's also a hopeless romantic who lives for stories about true love conquering all. Since variety is indeed the spice of life, she writes a mix of MM tropes and subgenres to satisfy her rapidly changing whims.

“What do I need to do to convince you I’m not going anywhere? Hmm? I’ve killed for you, Leander. I nearly died to keep you out of harm’s way. Do you want me to bleed again to prove how far I’m willing to go to make you happy?”
I didn’t wait for an answer. Without even thinking, I grabbed a knife from the wooden block on the counter and sliced across my forearm. Blood rushed out, hot and stinging, eliciting an involuntary hiss.
“Christ!” Leander gaped at me for a split second before grabbing the knife away from me and launching it in the sink.
“Sincere enough for you? Want to go draw up a contract? I’ll sign with this so you have no more reasons to doubt me.” I swiped my fingers across the stream of red and flicked it on the tile, adding to the splatter mosaic at my feet.

Bennett Reeves, yall. that’s the loml. 😭😭 no but honestly, i have a lot of favorite scenes from this book, but the scene above is one of the most memorable for me just bc it screamed B E N N E T T all over and it simply made sense once you get a grasp of his character. anyways, i missed my loves so much. 🥺🫶🏼

“Thank you…”
“You’re welcome?”
“You didn’t leave. I gave you every reason to… but you didn’t.”
“And walk away from the other half of my soul?” I shook my head, even if he wasn’t looking. “Impossible. I’d rather throw myself from the top of this building than live one more moment without you.”

Bennett and Leander deserve the world and more. they’ve been through hell and back, not only throughout this series, but also from their tragic pasts. aside from family issues - Bennett got struck by lightning as a kid, died for about three mins before being revived back to life and you’re telling me he gets drugged against his will, kidnapped three fucking times and beaten here? meanwhile, Leander’s grandmother locked him in a basement when he was young, which led to him killing her, causing his trauma that still haunts him today and now he has this ex who was his psychiatrist still trying to ask for another chance, even though he’s made it clear they were over? i swear, these two can’t catch a break with the dramas and i just want them to be—and stay—happy. is that too much to ask? 😭

i think book three is still my personal favorite bc the slow burn and development between Bennett and Leander were chefs kiss. the writing/pacing was built up so well that i’m still thinking about it; however, i enjoyed this just as much, seeing them officially together and living the domestic life. my only complaint was it felt like there was so much going on that it was hard to keep up during certain moments bc the drama kept piling up (i loved the jealousy and possessiveness between the two, but the miscommunications could have been better tbh. there were times when i wish they would talk things out... but i guess they wouldn't be who they are without the secrets 🤧). despite all that, Bennett and Leander are the lomls and i adore them so much. 🥺🤍

P.S. JUSTICE FOR COLE AND OLIVIA 😭 why did they have to be killed off? it would have been nice to see some sweet moments between them bc it was revealed they were (secretly) together for a while before their deaths. :(

"All around us, the water glimmered and glowed. If I could have stopped time, I would have. I wanted this moment, this indescribable feeling of pure happiness, to last for an eternity."

This is book 4 in a series, so if you haven't read the previous three books, stop now and go read them!

Uggghh. THIS WAS SOOOOO GOOD.

Bennett and Leander return to Easton with a lot of loose ends to tie off, with one of the biggest ones being the lovely Dr Lorelei.

"Leander dropped the biggest break-up bomb I'd ever seen and he didn't even flinch. He was so getting laid later."

Not to mention the Russian and Italian mob, kidnappings, murders, business deals and so many betrayals.

The Wrath of Leander Welles is a tough read, with several triggers (references to alcohol/drug use, various mental health issues, self-harm, suicide and torture) and of course Bennett and Leander are as psychopathic as ever. But oh, how I adore them Ashlyn Drewek 🖤🖤.

Highly recommended.

5 fabulous stars ✨✨✨✨✨.

Wrath is a fast-paced thrill ride from start to finish that picks up shortly after the events of Damnation and drops you immediately into the continuation of Leander and Bennett's chaotic love story.

Leander and Bennett's relationship progresses significantly throughout Wrath. Their unique love story is on full display in Wrath and I loved seeing their possessive eternal devotion to one another.

Wrath is a thrilling suspenseful romance that contains conflicts and interactions with both the Italian and Russian mafia. Alongside Leander and Bennett's business complications there are other more personal complications that are intensely dealt with throughout Wrath.

The existence of Leander's "ex" pushes Bennett into a desperately possessive mindset. Bennett's psychotic tendencies are enhanced dramatically throughout Wrath, he is not above playing dirty when it comes to protecting Leander. Lorelei plays an interesting role throughout Wrath and her interactions with Bennett were absolutely legendary.

Overall The Wrath of Leander Welles was another perfectly executed romance-filled thriller that left me speechless with its ending. I cannot wait for the conclusion. The Welles Family Saga is a thrill ride unlike any other.

⭐︎ 4.5 stars rounded up! ⭐︎

Wrath starts out wild and doesn't let up until the end. I feel like Bennett and Leander don't get a moments rest from the outset. Their impromptu vacation for a month is all they get before it's continued problems that need to be solved, getting kidnapped a time or two, and murdering people left and right.

Which, I know our boys are supposed to be ruthless murderers, but sometimes I was just thinking to myself "ya know, a lot of your problems wouldn't exist if you two didn't just murder people all the time" lol.

I love my horrible murder babies, but it's the truth lmao. I think a lot of the problems from this stemmed from them murdering people, or trying to murder people, and also not telling each other about it.

I was happy to see that this isn't the last in the series and we are least getting one more, because these boys need to learn to communicate with each other and truly work together and be unstoppable together. Yes, even murderous men in love need some couples therapy, honestly.

In this, they are both dealing with the aftermath of the last book, and dealing in ways that include not talking to each other about things. Not letting the other in on their murderous plans. If they had, I think things would go a lot better.

But I can't expect one broken man, and one man who isn't broken still isn't the healthiest of people, to have great communication skills.

For that reason, I let a lot of their idiocy go. Now Bennett and Leander are highly intelligent, cunning, ruthless men who you don't want to cross. But also both are impulsive - Bennett more than Leander, sure, but Leander has his moments in this book - and not always thinking things through. Sometimes their emotions get the better of them. That's where the idiocy came in - also, in their relationship.

This author did it with Roan and Sasha, and I just wish she would have her couples talk to each other. I swear if Leander and Bennett continue this not-talking behavior into the next book and never communicate or lay it all out for each other, I'm gonna get annoyed.

I know realistically these men would definitely have a hard time communicating, even if they loved each other. But I want that so bad. I want these two to open up to each other like they won't open up to anyone else. I want them to help carry the others burdens, and for them to be so in sync with each other that it isn't even a question on whether they'll tell the truth or not. They just will.

Instead, in this, they lie to each other, both don't tell each other things, Leander even straight up lies several times (despite his hatred of lying - apparently, only when it's other people does this standard apply), and it's from outside circumstances that they learn about most of the stuff the other does.

Now, at the heart of everything they do, it's to protect the other. Bennett and Leander are deeply in love, and highly possessive and protective of each other. They'll do anything for the other. If the other is in danger or if someone is threatening one or the other, they'll go postal.

So at the heart of it, I love what they do for each other in their sick and twisted ways. They are utterly devoted to each other and I adore it.

They just need to go about it better, mmkay?! The fact that they don't talk about shit is how these two end up physically fighting each other at one point in this.

I know after Lorelei, they would both be weary of any therapy...but damn do these two need therapy. If not individually, then together as a couple. I just kept wanting to shout "TALK TO EACH OTHER, ASSHOLES!" at their stupid faces.

In the last book, we got to see how much these two talked, how much they shared with each other. And these two still sometimes share...just not when they want to murder some people in service of the other. They need to learn to share everything.

I did appreciate that in this one, Leander's troubles didn't go away just because he gets to be with the love of his life now. That's realistic, and it was nice to see that Leander isn't just cured or anything because he has Bennett now.

But I do still want to see him grow, and learn to let go of some things. Like his insistence that there's the Welles family curse, and that one day Bennett will leave him. His dark thoughts that still make him suicidal, at times. I want to see him get to a better, stronger place. Like letting go of the ghost of his horrid grandmother once and for all. To trust in Bennett. I knew it would take some time, as Bennett did do a number on him and Leander is not an easily trusting person, but I want to see him get there with Bennett.

These two still have a way to go, but at the heart of it, these two are just head over heels in love with each other. Bennett's devotion is absolutely wonderful. He's so ruthless with almost everyone else in his life, seeing how he'll do anything for Leander is wonderful.

I loved that the steam picked up in this, and we got some great sex scenes between these two. While these two still didn't communicate well, and didn't talk when they should have, their sex never felt like it was to end and/or avoid an argument (like Leander and Lorelei did). They'd have sex purely because they wanted to.

Before I forget, I will warn for something that I wish I had been warned about:

As for Lorelei....she took an interesting turn in this. I could understand her anger and heartbreak, but she goes way too far in this, and gets close to a little too one dimensional territory herself. She wasn't the greatest character written before this, but she basically goes full on angry scorned ex who is out to get them. Especially Bennett. She is nowhere near a rational, stable person. Not the best person who should be a psychiatrist too.

Also I get that that Bennett but like...going to the mob? And thinking they'd keep their word? How naive and idiotic can you be? And publishing an article about Leander, and handing him along with Bennett up to the mob...how did she think that wasn't a betrayal of Leander's trust at all? What was she thinking?

I understand her wanting revenge on Bennett for what he does to her, but to drag Leander into it, the man she supposedly loves? That's just straight up bullshit. I have a feeling she isn't going away (I just hope Leander lets Bennett freaking kill her already. She's a nuisance as this point.) Although maybe she

Anyway, Lorelei was a thorn in Bennett's side, that's for sure. I did love how he wanted to cast her out of the house in every way possible, though. That part was hilarious. How he literally wanted the room she stayed in as a part of the remodel to get rid of it and her presence lol. When he came across a blonde hair or two of hers on clothes or drapes, and how angry that made him, it was hilarious. Bennett was wanting to cast her out like she was a ghost lol.

One thing that bothered me a little and the main reason for my .5 stars off - how easy it was for them to get away with some of the murders they committed. I understand them getting away with carefully planned and detailed murders (such as their big plan in the third book on how to get Leander off murder charges), but there were a few in this book that were spur of the moment thing, or not planned through enough, and I'm like....really, they're just gonna get away with it like that?

Like they murder a thief who took Leander's wallet in this at the beginning - you telling me there's no cameras on the streets that saw anything? They never seem to wear gloves, so no fingerprints? What about when Bennett throws the knife away in the alley - would the police not find it and try to search for who bought it?

What about Lorelei's mom? She's a freaking JUDGE. Are there seriously not any cameras on any of the buildings on that street that would capture Bennett's car and license plate number? He just did a drive by shooting in his own damn car, that he doesn't even get rid of. What about witnesses? How can he be so sure Lorelei wouldn't go to the police? Because she sure knows who killed her mother.

Then at the end Leander just charging at ? I know Bennett blew up the place, but man, wouldn't this shit catch up to them eventually? I know they're rich and have ties to people in high places, but...come on. They aren't an actual mob or something like that. Can they just keep getting away with murder after murder? Especially if it isn't well planned? Hmm...idk, it just bothered me.

But anyway, I'm so happy we'll get another book in this series, and more Bennett and Leander. I just want more of them being badass together, but also opening up to each other, even just a little bit. I want them to be able to help heal each other (especially Bennett with Leander. Leander is just such a broken man.)

So while this had a niggle or two for me, on the whole is was so well done. The romance, the characters, the sex, the plot, the pacing, the emotions...so good.

I'm so happy I gave this series a chance. Bennett and Leander, in all their fucked up murderous glory, have truly become a beloved couple for me. They fit so perfectly together. You can't have one without the other.

I cannot wait for the 5th installment, whenever that may be. I'll be counting the days.

Highly recommend this. Especially the third and fourth books that have just all the Bennett and Leander goodness. What a journey these two have been on so far. Two massive thumbs up from me!

This starts off immediately after the ending of Damnation, where Leander and Bennett run away. The story starts hot from the first word, and doesn’t let up. I was captivated.

This series is so rich with details. All of the Victorian poetry references, all of the internal plot references, everything intertwined, it weaves such a brilliant tapestry of a book. Series. Book series.

Bennett and Leander

“I was never really insane except upon occasions when my heart was touched.”

I love Bennett and his rampant insecurities, his need to protect Leander, his drive for revenge, his complete lack of concern for violence. He was so incredibly insecure and petty about Lorelei - I would be too, especially when Leander doesn’t like to clarify things. I love how he went all super lawyer on Lorelei about Annabel, and how he all but smudged the house to get rid of her presence. Obsessive, possessive, jealous, insecure, and insane are quite the combo, and really fun to read.

Leander is still Mr. Secrets, avoidance personified. I appreciated that Leander didn’t have his demons magically waved away from his earlier life and the psych ward stay. I was hoping he’d open up to Bennett more, but that didn’t really happen in this book. Leander was still insecure, jealous, and possessive in his own quietly insane way, whereas Bennett is loud about it. The scene where Bennett is actually shocked by how far Leander is willing to go for them was amazing. The imagery of that scene was raw and primal, showing the limits Leander will go to for his people.

I love their relationship, I love them together. I love how far they’re willing to go for each other. They’re a perfect match. They have so much emotional intimacy between them, I could really feel their connection, and it’s not entirely reliant on sex scenes. Though the steam level was definitely increased from the previous book!

They still don’t really talk to each other, which makes their relationship a bit strange. Mostly they both hide murders and revenge plots from the other, until something else reveals said plots and murders. For disliking lying, Leander sure skirts around the issue via omission about some of his murderous actions. Towards the end, they start to work together and I love it. Like Bennett says, together they’re unstoppable.

I live for the lawyerly smackdowns Bennett delivers, and I’m glad we got one in this book.

Though this is from two POVs, and mostly Bennetts, I love that you can still feel the characters through whoever lens you’re in. Their individuality is constantly present, regardless of whose head you’re in. It’s so well done.

It is so precious when Bennett calls Leander his otter.

Lorelei

Talk about a dark horse. I felt she was a pretty strong character in the first book, if misinformed (understatement). I did not expect her to be so obsessive, possessive, vindictive, whatever you want to call it, it’s like she got corrupted by becoming involved too deeply with Leander. She ended up with a weird balance of trying to “save” Leander by I guess maybe she just lost the plot after getting so completely and coldly rejected.

I was impressed

The Easton crew

Don’t read this section if you haven’t already read the book.

Other thoughts

I need to know

What was up with the Sergei scene in the first place? Having read The Kidnapping of Roan Sinclair, I know

Who sent God, so many questions!

The end of this book took the tension and dialed it up to 11.

Overall, this book wrapped up the hanging plot lines from the first three books, but there’s plenty of new questions. The end of this book is both complete and a cliffhanger. The best combo of a continuing series without being frustrating.

I received this as an ARC from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC for this book and had an amazing review, but goodreads deleted it.

I will say that I absolutely adore both MC’s. They are both murderously insane, and perfect for each other.
Leander is hauntingly broken and beautiful and I love him so!
Bennett is absolutely everything that Leander needs. He is also a jealous little beast, but Leander is his and vice versa. Without Bennett, Leander would never really be happy. I adore Bennett and Leander equally!

Damn. Brb gotta go schedule an appointment with my chiropractor because of all the whiplash this book gave me...

I must confess, and I do this with utter shame, I did not read the other books in the series...yet dw, I have kicked my own butt for this.

This is the second book by Ashlyn Drewek that I have read and she just knows how to write mystery, and darkness. Again, damn.

THIS WAS SO GOOD I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. Say it with me once last time, damn.

I cannot say anything about this book without completely spoiling it because so much happens. I can't even give a recap. The blurb is good enough if you'd like a recap. I can say that I've never had that much fun reading a dark romance in my life. Blah blah blah I have issues, yes. But for real! This book picks up right away with the MCs in an established relationship and it just never lets up. It's a rollercoaster of events and emotions.

Shoutout to both MCs who are probably the most adorable psychotic couple I've read in a long time. It was refreshing moving between moments of "aww" to "wtf" to "how?¿"

It really was.

P.S. If you have not read the other books and you're a cheater like me who's used to skipping other books in a continuous series, I think you should be okay. I could sorta kinda piece together what had occurred in other books. I do recommend they be read in order though because I think it adds to the depth of the whole story. And you bet I am going to binge the previous books when I have some time ✌🏾

Anddd this ends on an HEA but also a tiny cliffhanger. I cannot wait for the next book!! Ashlyn Drewek has quickly become an auto-buy author, and I love that for me 😂

This worked even less for me than The Damnation of Leander Welles. I started skimming after the 24% because I'm not into and never stopped because I didn't have the patience to deal with her presence in the story.

As I said above, Lorelei's presence throughout the story was, to me, a blight and it was hella frustrating Leander's reluctance to break things off with her. What was even worse, especially towards his relationship with Bennett, was the fact that Lorelei knew things about Leander's past, that Leander never told Bennett only hinted at. I couldn't reconcile that. Leander never opened up to Bennett in the previous book, when Bennett was always honest about his past with him, but I was expecting he was going to do it in this one, but he never did and I view that as a betrayal especially for how deeply they feel about one another.

In all seriousness Leander did Bennett dirty because he left him, fumbling in the dark, fighting 2 ghosts from his past without any weapons and then had the audacity to be angry and punish Bennett for something that was out of his hands (aka what happened in Delirium). Although if Bennett wasn't a child when it came to how he handled the mafia when he went to work, I wanna say exclusively but I'm not sure, for Leander then he wouldn't be in the hot waters he found himself in.

And then of course were the 2 very senseless . Those made no sense other than to validate the title.

Throughout the series, who Bennett and Leander were really up against? The Marcheses? Leander's past and subsequent revenge? Bennett's present? Lorelei? Themselves? A hodgepodge of it all? It was a bit of a mess and the way they handled everything was even more messier, in terms of it not really making sense. Yes, I know it's fiction! But that doesn't mean that it has to clash with every element that gives the story plausibility and credibility.

And the end, if it is the end and there isn't another book coming, is a very tentative HFN.

Truth be told I had a completely different image in my mind when it came to Bennett and Leander from their appearance in The Vengeance of Roan Sinclair, that's why I picked up the last 2 books in the Leander Welles series, and it clashed horribly with what I read and didn't compute, thus me being disappointed.

If there is another book coming, I can safely say that I'm done with the series but I'll always be game to read anything else gay romance of Ashlyn's. Besides, let's be real, not every book from a favourite author is win.

"There is no life for me without you. I tried to live without you once and it broke me. You are the reason my wretched soul continues to exist.

HOLY FUCK. I just found myself lost in the dark hole that is the Leander Welles series. I'm late to the party, but I legit could not put this series down. I devoured each book that led me farther and farther into the dark and twisted tale of a man who's wrath knows no bounds. Make that two men, because make no mistake Bennett and Leander are true kindred spirits in every sense of the phrase.

This series was just full of misdirection and betrayals. A real psychological thriller. These men may seem like psychopaths to some, but the connection they have for each other is real. I have no doubt in my mind that Bennett and Leander love each other fiercely. They would die for one another and almost have on more than one occasion. They can also be incredibly romantic which was so sweet in the midst of all the murder and torture.

This one ends on a cliffhanger and while usually I go crazy with cliffys this is one I can get behind. Hopefully the clues we are left with mean only one thing because it's about damn time is all I can say. That being said, it means there must still be more to come for this series in the future and you can bet your ass I'll be keeping an eye out for any news.

Absolutely amazing next book in the series; this time a continuation of the series (rather than same time period from a different POV like the last 3 books). This book is dual POV between Bennett and Leander and focusses on the fallout after the events of Leander’s incarceration and every thing that followed that.

We have more thrills, torture, blood, gore and mob-related drama, as well as some glimpses into Bennett and Leander together, living their best domestic lives. They are just such a powerful couple and my favourite murder husbands 😍

We also get more of Lorelei and I honestly can’t decide how I feel about her; she’s obviously delusional and makes some truly horrendous decisions when it comes to Leander, but I sort of feel like she’s blinded by her obsession with him? Idk, Bennett and Leander 4lyfe 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t think this is the last book in the series? Although Bennett and Leander definitely get their HEA, there is a little twist in the final epilogue which suggests the blood and gore might not be over yet? I hope there is another book (as I want to see more of Leander and Bennett being in love and totally obsessed with each other) but if not, I think this book leaves it in an excellent place for them 💕

This is by far one of my most favourite series. Leander and Bennett are perfect in craziness, obsession and I just love them so much. Bennett is just charismatic but will do anything for Leander.
This book in the series absolutely wrecked me. A lot happens and I am so invested in this series that I found parts hard to read. Ashlyn is brutal but it works.
It’s a dark and psychologically disturbing world built and it’s just perfect. You need to read this series.

DAMN this one is PERFECT
I loved the realness of this book. I hated Cole and Olivia dying, but I saw it very fitting, you cannot run a bunch of people killing and not have some die in the wake of your destruction.
I must admit I did not see the plot twist of Lorelei being the one after Bennett. That one took me by surprise. I also want to know who killed her after all. I don't have any theories!!!!
I want to see a follow-up on Gavin and Jake. I see some potential there, please!!

My only problem with this book is, I don't like when the female characters are made stupid or sidelined for no good reason. I didn't like how the whole Lorelei situation was handled. I still love Bennett, mind you, he's still one of the most interesting characters I've read in a while but unfortunately that one situation kept biting me.

“I’m yours,” Leander whispered against my lips. “I’ve always been, and always will be, yours.”

Could I be anymore in love with these boys? The fourth instalment in the Leander Welles saga is a spectacular one.  Bennett and Leander’s love is so deep and all consuming that they would do anything and kill anyone to protect what is theirs and I am here for that. Bennett absolutely shines in this book; the way he takes on Leander’s pain and loves him like no one else can, flaws and all, is breathtaking.

The plot is the plot that keeps on giving. So much happens and it takes you on a rollercoaster ride but it all has a valid place in the story and as usual, it’s very well written. I loved where Ashlyn took the story and the twists and turns along the way never made it a dull moment, and quite frankly, I just can’t get enough of Bennett and Leander and their murderous ways!

Thank you Ashlyn for sending me an arc and allowing me to be your beta reader. My review is honest as always and I genuinely have such a deep love for this series.

“I made you a promise! Does that mean nothing?"

“Actions speak louder than words.” He gave me a pointed once-over, his lip curled. “You, of all people, know that.”

I’ll sign with this so you have no more reasons to doubt me.”

I really like this book, all of the series really, but I went to this book with the impression that it would be the last one in this series ( thought that maybe another series was in the making with Elijah, Jake and others) but that this series would be done and maybe because I read all the four books in a row when "the end" was not the end, after all the things they've been enduring I was so frustrated, I wanted them to finally have an happy ending but I was left in a cliffhanger. So to all the people who's going to read this book (it's totally worth it and you should give it a chance) don't think this will be the end or you'll be like me, frustrated beyond belief!

I don’t know where to go from here.. no other couple can compare to Bennett and Leander! The very first chapter of this book is a perfect example of their all-consuming macabre romance. They are perfect soulmates and my heart feels fullest when they are being all cute & murdery together 🥰 I can’t wait for the next installment to see them eliminate all their threats & get their cozy HEA

I really wanted to love this series but it didnt work for me.

I'm actually find with all of the blood, death and violence but Bennett and Leander lie/withhold from each other far too often for me to truly believe a HEA is in the cards.

Wow, wow, WOW!! I'm speechless. This is one of the best books I've ever read and one of the best series I've ever read. I loved Book 3 in which we see Leander and Bennett's relationship from the time they meet through being friends, becoming lovers, breaking up and reuniting. I was wary going into this book because established relationship books tend to suffer from a lack of plot or stupid, manufactured drama. But this book was perfection!! I devoured every word and I couldn't stop reading. The author achieved a perfect balance between sweet romance, the difficulties of maintaining a long term relationship, intense action-packed suspense plotlines and Bennett's wonderful humor. Ashlyn Drewek is an immensely talented author and storyteller and this book is all the evidence someone needs to believe that.

There was so much going on in this book but I never felt confused. Unlike in Book 3 where some of the action/suspense plotlines only revolved around Bennett and thus, I wasn't as interested in them, every plotline in this book involved Leander and Bennett. Whether they were carrying out murder plans on their own and having to deal with the consequences of hiding what they're doing from each other or they teamed up to carry out murders together, I remained heavily invested in every single plotline because it was important to both of them.

So many times when an author promises in the summary that characters have a few loose ends to deal with, it's often an exaggeration or silly manufactured drama. But the way the author plotted out this series was perfection. Books 1 and 2 dealt with the 4-murder-mystery and also set up some minor plotlines that weren't resolved but weren't important enough to think about. Book 3 added new plotlines and only resolved the one concerning Bennett and Leander's relationship. As a result, the author had a huge pile of interesting plotlines to fill Book 4, ones which readers were already familiar with and were eager to see continued.

Throughout all of this intense action, there was the ongoing domestic plotline of Bennett and Leander navigating the ups and downs of being married while they're both volatile, stubborn individuals. I loved that their domestic arguments almost always revolved around one of them going off and murdering somebody, not telling the other in order to not stress them out and then the other finding out and getting angry at not being told about it. They don't argue over what to cook for dinner or renovation options for the mansion. No, these two only argue when it comes to murder and death-dying stunts that one or both end up in constantly. The casual way Leander and Bennett treat violence combined with Bennett's constant wise-cracking during gory moments helped keep the mood of the novel from becoming too dark. I really appreciated this because the number of murders and the amount of gore in this book is a lot (even more than Book 3) and it would have been easy for the mood to become too violent and depressing. But the addition of humor and romance really helped to balance things out.

Speaking of their domestic disputes, I adored that the author kept including really sweet romantic moments between the two guys. No matter how intense and busy things got, there would always be quiet, adorable moments between them when they're cuddling or doing small things that emphasize how much they love each other. The continuous use of cute nicknames for both of them (Bennett calling Leander 'my love' and Leander calling Bennett 'mon coeur') was also adorable. There were so many sweet moments, like when . One of my favorite parts is the whole 'otter' thing that the author started in Book 3, when Bennett and Leander are platonically sharing a bed while in Italy and Bennett notices that he has a tendency to grab and hold onto Leander's hand while sleeping. It's something otters do so Bennett refers to Leander as his otter (never out loud but just in his own head) and it was adorable when this was continued in Book 4, like when Bennett was drugged against his will and he's mumbling nonsense, including asking for 'his otter'. I also loved that the author had the boys decide to get married at the start of the book because, OMG - whenever one of them was in danger and the other wiped out the 'if you hurt my husband, you'll die a slow and painful death', I legitimately almost passed out from the emotional intensity. Leander and Bennett are so insanely possessive over each other anyway, so adding in a possessive label like 'husband' into the mix made everything a thousand times more intense and meaningful. Have I mentioned that Ashlyn Drewek is brilliant and seems to know exactly what I crave in a story? Because, yeah.

I also love that Leander and Bennett are both really smart criminals. I despise stupid characters, especially when characters are supposedly professionals and very knowledgeable. So I really appreciated how much effort the author put into demonstrating Bennett and Leander's wealth of knowledge and experience. Throughout the book, they use their extensive knowledge of the law, anatomy, murder techniques, criminal investigation procedures and psychology to plan and carry out whatever needs doing. If they need help with something they don't know enough about, they both have tons of connections that they can make use of (doctors, computer hackers etc). The way these guys use their knowledge and expertise was perfectly done because neither of them are portrayed as Gary Stus. Sometimes their plans go awry and sometimes they do stupid, impulsive things when they're upset and they have to suffer the consequences. But I absolutely believed that these guys are experience killers who keep getting away with murder over and over again because they're smart and professional.

Onto the sad part of the review. Lorelai. Oh, poor Lorelai. And no, I'm not being sarcastic. I honestly cried at the end of this book when we find out what's in that box. If readers didn't read the first parts of the series, I think they might believe Bennett's opinion that she's just a stupid bitch (his exact words) and it makes me sad that those readers will probably dismiss her as a villain, rather than the tragic victim that she is. Her only crime in this entire series was that she felt too much empathy towards Leander and she fell victim to his good looks and charm and ended up falling in love with him despite all the warnings signs. Yes, she was stupid, yes, she ignored the many red flags that popped up throughout Books 1 and 2 and yes, she was overconfident in her own abilities to 'fix' Leander. Even though Leander doesn't need to be fixed in the way Lorelai thinks he does, her heart was still in the right place. And what does she get for daring to fall in love with someone who actively encouraged that to happen? All because she fell in love with a man she didn't understand and who lives in a world she knows nothing about.

Yes, Lorelai did try to fight back against Leander's treatment of her but both of her attempts badly backfired on her because again, she was going up against ruthless, violent people who played by a set of rules that she didn't understand. While I love Leander and Bennett, I do feel angry over how they treated Lorelai. Leander tries to avoid any blame for the situation by stating that he never told Lorelai he loved her, so Lorelai's belief that they were in a romantic relationship was completely made up by her. He washes his hands of taking any responsibility, despite him having been the one who actively pursued Lorelai and encouraged their romance to begin and continue. In Books 1 and 2, he promised her multiple times that he'd never hurt her and that she can trust him with her heart. Lorelai even left him once and Leander chased after her and begged her to come back because he wanted to be with her. Yes, he didn't tell her he loved her in so many words, but he definitely gave her the impression that he was serious about their relationship and that he was committed to her. At the same time, Leander occasionally listened to his guilty conscience and warned Lorelai to get away from him and there were so many red flags all over the place, yet Lorelai always stubbornly stayed with him due to her naïve belief that she could 'fix' Leander and turn him into the man she wanted him to be. So I believe they both share the blame from their disastrous romantic relationship but no matter what, I'm devastated that Lorelai ended up paying for her mistake with .

But that's what makes this series so brilliant. I never expected to care about Lorelai, never mind being devastated at what she went through. The author did such a perfect job of portraying Lorelai's journey through this entire series and delivering a message that everybody (especially women) need to take to heart: go into relationships with your eyes wide open and know exactly who you're getting involved with. Because if you end up in a world filled with people you don't understand and who operate with a completely different moral code as you, you'll end up getting hurt and possibly worse.

I could go on and on about the many things that I loved in this book and this series overall. The characters are amazing, the plotlines were interesting and incredibly well done, the balance between light and dark moments was perfect, the blend of sweet romance and dark themes was exactly what I wanted and I can't wait to read more in this series and by this author in general.

2★'s = it was ok.

I’ve been finished these books for a few days now and have been trying to write something. Something that is fitting to my reaction to the book, with consideration of it not being my normal read. I’m all over the place with my thoughts, just like the series. I’m ready to put these guys and gals to bed though so this is it.

There was a chance this wouldn’t work for me. There was a chance I was not the right audience for it. I read the warnings and went in with a clear head. It’s weird. I enjoyed it and then I didn’t. It would have another moment or two, and then I wouldn’t like it again.

In the end, where the story headed, I just didn’t like it. It just changed and changed and kept spinning wildly out of control. Things didn’t add up and then got super over the top. There were so many players on the board and some of what went down, well, it just did not sit well with me. Dark or not. I just wished it went a different way.

Like how it went from a M/F Dark Romance to a M/M Dark Romance, by the end of the first book and definitely by the end of the second, I wish none of that had even happened. It too made things happen because they had to to make sense in the bigger picture but really, I was so over Lorelei by this point I just didn’t care and well, I didn’t believe it.

So, I took a chance and there was a moment or two when I thought, ok, this is going to work, but overall, it just didn’t. I read the warnings, but it wasn’t the stuff I was warned about that didn’t work.

And now I see there is another book on the way. I’m not sure I’m up to it, it’s bound to just be a total bloodbath.

Obsessive and slightly unhinged and fat from what book 3 was

Having had the title as I did - it’s still a good enough read and has a solid continuation to everything that is Bennet and Leander.

There was lots of possessive obsessive love, plenty of action and unhinged bloody mayhem. There is lots of Bennett snark (adds a star) but there was also plenty of eye rolling parts. The childish jealousy, the almost patronising insecurity about one another. What happened to the two stunningly delicious intellectuals who amazed us with their snarky and Celebes dialogues? Who were so believably falling for each other for the most part of the previous book? All of the sudden they became way less interesting and intriguing. And instead became two immature idiots who frustrate more than give pleasure with their interactions.

And then there is Lorellei and main reason for my lack of stars. In some ways I’m glad I haven’t read book 1 or 2 where she first makes an appearance because I would either have liked the idea of them together or she would absolutely disappoint me as a pointless robotic and totally useless character in this whole drama. Totally not believable, which is what perhaps makes the jealousy such an unconvincing part of this.

All in all, clever in parts and enjoyable still, but while the first book took all of my attention (and lots of my sleep) this one didn’t. It had the potential, the characters were lovable and transferable. Their development, dialogues or interactions in this instalment just didn’t convince me enough.

How does one even recover from a book like this??? This book hangover is about to be huge.🥺🥺

Anyway I LOVED THIS SO FREAKING MUCH.

BIG SPOILER WARNINGS: Apologises I’m usually more controlled with my reviews but I need to scream my thoughts SOMEWHERE. So please please (unless you like spoilers like me) don’t read this until after you’ve read books 2,3,4!

The INTENSITY!!
The MAYHEM!!!
The MURDER!!!
The ROMANCE!! Bennett and Leander own my heart they’re the best murder HUSBANDS. Like yes yes YES. Of course they do still clash and you know, made me scream at the wall so much my neighbour probably thinks I’ve murdered someone, but that’s besides the point. They love each other so much and their devotion is !!!! I can’t even express words.
The JEALOUSY!! Okay listen I know this isn’t everyone’s trope but I am a sucker for “mine!! Don’t touch” and believe me I have never read anyone as possessive as Bennett Reeves and I loved that Leander (who to be fair is maybe not as bad but still has some possessive qualities) just goes with it.
The HEARTBREAK I am still not over it. My fucking heart is shattered I loved Redacted so much, I know it’s so, but say it isn’t?? Why why why.

Anyways, that’s all for now. Please read this series and fall in love with Bennett and Leander just like me and them come spam DM me because I have THOUGHTS!!

Whew this book was a journey! I love seeing these two psychos start their life together. They are so passionate about each other and their connection is absolute fire. There was so much drama, killing, oh-no moments, & loss in this book. I was not expecting it to make me cry so much. I won't say why but anyone who reads it can figure out all the moments I cried.

It seems like maybe there is a final book in the series but not sure if Ashlyn is still going forward with it. I need it but I am also scared of what the current title of it is. I do not want anything happening to either of my boys! Overall I really enjoyed this series and I absolutely adore Leander & Bennett. They are 100% soulmates.

Highlights:
The proposal
The phone password
The trust for Martha & Calvin

“Marry me, Leander,” I repeated, trying my best to scrutinize his expression in the near-dark. “Say you’ll be mine for the rest of our lives. God knows, I’m not a poet. I can’t describe how perfect you are or credit the stars for bringing us together. All I can do is promise to love you as no one has ever been loved before until I take my last breath.”

I didn’t know anything about soulmates or twin flames or any of that shit, but I knew from that night on that Leander held my heart, my life, my very soul in his hands.

Well this whole series has been a bit of a disappointment for me. My general thoughts were made in my review of book 3 and I haven't changed those thoughts in going straight through to book 4.

what I liked:
♦ I actually ended up loving Leander and Bennett together. They are both so broken but so perfect for each other
♦ That we got some resolution of the story arc overall and also to see a little more of some of the side characters

what I didn't like:
♦ Lorelei's character arc. There didn't seem to be anything in her book that hinted at her actions within this book. It seemed very out of character for her and came off like a poor excuse to deal with her within the storyline. I think it could have been made a lot more interesting without the stupid stuff.
♦ the repeated absurdity of some of the plot with kidnappings, people dying (including some I did not want to die and I was pissed that they did)

I'm glad I finished the series but I cant say it was an overly enjoyable experience ofr me.

I've read other books by this author I've enjoyed a whole lot more.

I think this was a clever concept , not all that well executed.

Where was this gem of a series hiding!? I LOVED everything about this! Leander and Bennett's relationship and the way they care for each other is just *chef's kiss* Their intimacy is soooo sweet! and it contrasts so nicely with their lethal way of handling obstacles, no matter how big or small. There were some occasions where I would be taken aback by how violently they would react to something like "oh, damn...okay then" but, at the same time, it brought such a thrill and really reinforced how dark the characters are and I loved it!!! This is such a rare series cause I've always wanted to read something dark, mafia-ish, with an established couple and now I got it. (However, I really think we could've done without a whole book on Lorlei. Their relationship was so small and trivial compared to the main story/relationship, it didn't deserve a whole book to be wasted on it. UGH.) Speaking of Lorlei, I got such a kick out of Bennett cursing her all the time lmao. She does need to die.

I am soo excited that there is 1 more book left! YAYYY! Also, I would love if the author expands on other characters from this world. Ex: Gavin is a hilarious and pair him up with Jake, who needs someone to loosen him up a bit, sounds like they would make a great couple!!

If I could rate this 100 stars I would. After reading the first 2 books, this is just a FUCKING MASTERPIECE. Truly. Words almost can describe. I lost an entire day because I couldn't put it down.

Bennett and Leander! *sighs* I love them so much.

This was an orgasmic reading experience. Chefs kiss 🤌🏾. It ticked the box for my most favorite "tropes" in MM Romance that's not to say it's formulaic. It's isn't, I've honestly never read anything quite like this series. Ashlyn Drewek knows how to write romance and she knows how to write suspense

With this series so far I feel like Ashlyn has broken me into tiny, tiny little pieces, which I usually hate but somehow don't mind here, because she eventually put me back together in a way that's sooooo much better than before on account of experiencing these characters and their sublime story!
