Fears and self-doubts are among the biggest challenges writers face. We can't control how our work is received, but we can work on what goes on between our ears and how we see our writing and appreciate success.

In "Breakthrough," Dharma Kelleher describes the fears, self-doubts and problems that we encounter from within, and in reaction to external factors outside of our control. She does so with empathy and great kindness, and gives the reader tools to help quiet the "troll" inside us, help us trust in our writing process, and reclaim our love for writing.

She discusses using affirmations, and provides both powerful examples but also a way to dial them in by degrees, something I've not encountered before. Gratitude lists, journaling, and free writing are also highlighted as ways forward.

It can take time to get through the blocks of our own making. It certainly has for me, but rediscovering the joy in my writing has been truly priceless. As has understanding the delusion of success. Dharma talks about the "misery conspiracy," one way we can sabotage ourselves, taking ourselves way from embracing the joy in our writing each day.

There's so much more in this book: "Shining Object Syndrome," dealing with writer's block, dealing with burnout, failures and flops, etc.

Well-written, and filled with great advice and empathy, "Breakthrough" will help you unlock the door through self-doubt and fear. I'm very thankful for this book.
