Volume 1 - Issue 03 of Light explores the theme of 'Solitude' through photography and poetry. Solitude is a common topos of art. Loneliness and estrangement are familiar subjects. Being content by oneself, mindful in the present moment, is another recognizable theme. Solitude suggests recognition that someone or something is alone, but it’s a tricky idea. Can we be alone with ourselves? Does a daisy in a field, an asteroid in deep space, or a preserved body in a bog exemplify some aspect of what being alone means? If there is some artist observing and commenting on a subject’s isolation, does observation negate solitude? Perhaps solitude isn’t simple. Maybe, in some contexts, it is.
