Magical Dating Agency #1

Love & Curse Making

Rate this book
What do jazz pixies, siren celebrities, and three hundred disastrous dates with supernatural men have in common?

Me.

I’m Cerys. And at twenty-two years old, running a paranormal dating agency with my bestie and living in the magical society of Nepos is an amazing life.

Not gonna lie though, it’d be better with a little action. Kissing, maybe? A one-armed hug? Heck, after three years, I’ll take a man touching my bedsheets. Or would if this curse didn't 100 percent block me from romance.

When my ‘extinct’ brand of magic explodes in the presence of true love, the off-the-charts sexy but infuriatingly bored Detective Devereaux gets involved. And let me tell you, ladies, there are m-u-s-c-l-e-s under his long coat!

So I’m cursed and dodging the law and trying to put more love in the world each day. And now some creep is digging up heart elemental bodies.

Seriously. How is it only Monday?

If you enjoy books by C.N. Crawford, Ilona Andrews, K.F. Breene, and Patricia Briggs, then you’ll love this vibrant supernatural society where magical creatures burst from every storefront and love is complicated.

When I began this book I honestly thought it wasn't for me... There seemed to be a lot going on in the first couple of chapters and so many supernatural beings to deal with! There were cupids (one of the main characters), sirens (another main character), pixies, wolves, vampires.... etc. You get it I'm sure. It was quite a lot to take in.

I'm not quite sure where the book became addictive or where the storyline actually grabbed me but it did and it hit big time!

The writing was definitely in Ms St. Clare's natural style, the style that helps you become a part of the world you are reading and the easy way in which you forget you are just a mere human in a vibrant world of magic and mayhem.

The story is one of fun and mystery and coupled with love, well let's face it, a Cupid in a leading lady role wouldn't be part of a book without that romance, the twist is the curse that is involved with the romance and how it affects the entire story... an amazing story that I can't wait to continue reading.

Kelly St. Clare is right up there with my favourite authors!!

My God, it's FINALLY OVER.

If this book didn't have Kelly St Clare's name on the front cover, I would never in a million years have believed she wrote it. How did the incredible author who's produced some of my all-time favourite series (Pirates of Felicity, Vampire Towers, Last Rebel on Earth) give us this snoozefest???
mountain-outline
22-year-old Cerys Concordia is a cupid, so obviously she runs a matchmaking service with her best friend, siren Soleil. She also has 'wavy ash-blonde hair', a fact I'm assuming is important since it was repeated way more than necessary. For the last three years Cerys has been under a terrible curse from a witch who thinks she stole her man. Every time she even thinks about being attracted to a guy, bad things happen. This gave rise to an entertaining first chapter in which she attempts to lure an incubus to her bed, and things go very badly awry.

Unfortunately, the story went downhill from there. One night Cerys accidentally releases some illegal cupid magic, and in charge of the investigation is 28-year-old Detective Devereaux Vincori - easily a contender for Most Boring Hero Ever. (Also, what's up with these stupid names?) Dev is a berserker, but you'd never know it, considering he has all the passion and personality of a damp cloth. He says basically NOTHING, his primary form of communication is grunting, and he and Cerys have no chemistry whatsoever. St Clare is an author with proven experience in crafting awesome alpha heroes, so to say I'm disappointed would be an understatement. Dev doesn't even have a cute nickname for Cerys! I've always loved that St Clare heroes have unique and adorable names for their heroines, not just the generic 'princess' or whatever, but Dev is so second-rate he doesn't even do that.

Considering the lack of chemistry and actual conversation between them, I find it even more incomprehensible that Cerys is saying she 'cares' for Dev at like, 65% in. What on earth has she seen to care about? For that matter, what has he? I found her irritating, with none of the charm other St Clare heroines had. She's blonde, gorgeous, a special snowflake magic-wise, good at her job... I could go on. Other than those things, which are more physical characteristics, Cerys doesn't really have a personality.

As if the boring characters weren't enough, the plot is tissue-thin too. It is so incredibly slow-moving that it took me almost five days to finish this book, when I should have done it in two. The entire event which the novel is built around is the disappearance of Jaeke, a minor character we meet for three seconds. Guess what? I didn't care about Jaeke. We were supposed to care about him, because he's also a cupid so his abduction could mean Cerys is next, but I was so indifferent to her existence that I didn't care about that either.

Good worldbuilding could have redeemed this book a but. Unfortunately, good worldbuilding isn't here either. On the one hand, I get that this is the first book in a series, so presumably more details are coming. On the other hand, surely it's in the first book you want to make your setting clear? Because it was clear as mud.

Basically, we're told the twelve gods of the Roman (not Greek) pantheon procreated and have birthed multiple different types of supernatural races. These races come in generations, like Kindle devices - first gen, second gen, and so on. It's not explained why, if the world stems entirely from Roman mythology, we get so many non-Roman creatures. Dev is a berserker - that's Norse mythology, what's it doing here? Why are there vampires and werewolves and genies? How does the generations thing actually work - if Cerys and Dev are only in their 20s, they can't be only three generations removed from the classical gods? The more I think about it, the more questions I have.

Overall

I was DYING to read this book. St Clare is one of my favourite authors, and I don't mean that lightly - I spent a frenzied 10-day period in December 2020 reading EVERY SINGLE BOOK IN HER BACKLIST, and loving them all. I disliked her last couple of releases but I put that down to them being cowrites, which often can do terrible things to an author I like when they're writing alone.

I'm almost certainly not reading the sequel.

4 Stars for Love & Curse Making: Magical Dating Agency, Book 1 (audiobook) by Kelly St. Clare read by Marnye Young.

Love is really complicated and hard to find when you’re a Cupid with a curse and you have a dating agency to run. This was a fun paranormal romance.

Cute! I liked the story and mystery going on-plus the world building and humor is pretty fun.

But holy heck almost all of the side characters were just kinda jerks (the witch, the bar people, the detective, the genie, the other witch, the sirens ect ect.) 🥲Our h just can't seem to catch a break!

But the major ongoing issue of our Cupid's life is due to a witch that cursed Cerys for simply going on a date with her ex.

I mean come on....

description

This curse stops her from experiencing any kind of love (from romantic, to sexual, to even just getting the tingly feels for a guy) which is like kryptonite for a Cupid! Like dang.

But that's not the only thing going wrong in Cerys life. Things start to go even more sideways when she gets implicated in a crime and brought to the attention of a seriously attractive and insistent Berserker Detective- and well, even more crazy ensues.

So while some of the characters got my blood pressure up with the annoyance factor I will probably read on to figure out who has it out for our Cupid h.

This was a pretty good read and had a lot of interesting parts. It leaves you in suspense on some things which was great and made the story captivating. I will say though that sometimes the lack of world building felt like a hindrance to the story and had some parts feeling a little confusing.

I actually didn't realize when I started the book that it would end on a cliffhanger so I'm not sure if I'll still feel like reading the next two books when they're out. But for now I do think I have enough interest that I'll continue with the series once it's complete.

This was such a feel good book.

The heroine is a cupid who was cursed because she went on a date with a guy who unbeknownst to her was two-timing his girlfriend. His girlfriend, a witch, curses the heroine so she can't be intimate with any man. The heroine tries to subvert the curse by going on dates with different men and trying to get them to have sex with her. Since the 3 years she had been cursed, her date has only been able to get about 2-5 ft from her bed before something crazy happens. Either the roof caves in, the bed spontaneously catches fire or a chandelier comes crashing down.

This makes her absolutely miserable. A cupid who can't have a relationship or just sex. Now add in the fact that some psycho is going around kidnapping cupids. She just can't get a break.

The mystery part lagged, I wasn't really invested in it. I just wanted to see what new catastrophe will arise at her dates. The hero was alright, I do wish he is given more verve. He was almost boring. I will be reading the next book because I can't wait to see what comes next.

Kelly St. Clare takes the old gods, spins the lore into something a bit new and different, and then crafts a story about love and curses that is hilarious and addicting. Truly cannot wait for the next installment!

What I loved:

• The FMC is really the whole package: a sweet, sexy, funny wholesome Cupid that is super good at her job. She also happens to be harboring some dangerous-to-her-health secrets and an *extremely* unfortunate, unwarranted curse.

• OH MY GOODNESS! this curse is so ridiculously horrible, but funny AF. See chapter freaking 1 for an idea of what kind of shenanigans to expect.

• I am so intrigued by the love interest detective omg. Can't wait for him to lose his shit and go berserk. I can see it happening and I'm here for it!

If you dig NA UF romance with some paranormal magic, pick this up on January 14th 2020 2. I loved it and cannot wait for the second installment!

4.5 💘

Kelly's Blood Ties and Shifter Wars series' are two of my favourite ever, so I was delighted to be offered an ARC if a new series she has releasing.

I want to start by saying that the tone and vibe of this book is very different to the two series I mentioned above. The characters and writing quality is just as good, but I would describe this as a light, humourous and fluffy book, whereas the others are much most angst-driven. Even though darker and angst-driven tend to be more of my usual read, I loved every second of this.

The opening scene is just spectacularly amusing and it really sets the tone of what poor Cerys has had to live with for three years. She's a cupid who was cursed by a witch to not only not have any physical contact with a man, but even flirting or attraction will cause dangerous (and often helarious) disasters to occur. Considering her whole being revolves around love, she forces herself to go on meaningless and pointless dates to try and weaken the Curse over time.

Throw in an awesome best friend, their shared dating agency, a mysterious detective, who's getting close to a big secret Cerys is hiding, all linked in with a string of kidnaps, murders and grave ribbing if heart elementals, and you have a brilliant story.

This series would be so bingable and I wish the next one was out already!

4.5 stars! This was just so much freaking fun to read. Surly, hot berserker detective and disaster-prone Ceris (a Cupid) made for some great times. Reading this elicited the same feeling that reading Ilona Andrews urban fantasy gave me. Again, there’s just something about her writing but everything Kelly St. Clare writes is like a comfort read to me.

This book follows a Cupid who has been cursed by a witch to never find love. The mishaps could border on over the top, but I loved the humor. I also absolutely love how thrown off the love interest is by her. He's a berserker (which is never really explained, so hoping to learn more details about that in future books), but he's a cop who investigates her for using unauthorized cupid magic on humans. Anyways, Cupids are going missing and her work suffers a break-in, so he turns from investigator to protector.
A mussed-looking detective burst into the interrogation room. Sheesh. Impressive. I’d only been here for thirty minutes. Looked like he’d rolled out of bed to race over.
Her curse makes it so she can't even think amorous thoughts about someone without something bad happening. So despite their growing attraction, there's an actual reason they can't be together. This book was funny, the slow-burn delightful, and the main characters likeable. Can't wait for book two!

Honestly this book was so much fun!!!! I had a smile on my face the entire time while reading. Cerys is a cupid who runs a magical dating agency with her best friend, the siren Soleil. After a magical mishap, Detective Devareaux - a beserker - is assigned to the case. Sparks fly between him and Cerys, but she is cursed to never love and disaster befalls anytime she gets close to a man. Literally this book was laugh out loud hilarious! Such a fun time if you are looking for something short and sweet to pick up.

3.5⭐️🎉 Read Love & Curse Making on a sad day - this will def cheer you up! It's a super fun, funny, light-hearted read.

There's never a dull moment in Love & Curse Making so it'll keep you turning the pages. It's not a mind-blowing book with intense feels (which I usually prefer) at all, but it's a fun story you could read in one go. Love the comedy too - haven't laughed out loud in a while until reading this one!

And I love Cerys as an h but I hope Devereux is more than what he seems. We'll likely find out more about him in the rest of the series. Adding the next installment to my TBR! 🎉

Note: My 4⭐️ and 5⭐️ ratings are reserved for books with amazing worldbuilding with intricate plots and/or unforgettable romances, so 3.5⭐️ for a read that's very light is already a high rating from me. 💕

Hilarious and so good

I loved this! I absolutely love Cupid themed books, and this one is a bit different then I've read, but no less amazing. We meet a Cupid " a real Cupid " hiding among others in plain site. Its dangerous to be a powerful cupid for so many reasons, top that off with a no smexy time curse and a gal who attracks trouble like white in rice, its disastrous all around our H. Trouble is definitely brewing behind the scenes, and a sexy detective is more then willing to help anyway he can. This book is laugh out loud hilarious and down right so freaking entertaining. definitely great book

Disappointingly Ableist

At first I was enjoying this cute silly paranormal romcom, despite being a bit annoyed that a curse against “romance” would have anything to do with smexy times, (romance is not sex…I shouldn’t have to explain how they’re different) but I became more and more unsettled by how the MC used men/dates without consideration of them, their emotions or safety at all.

Anndd near the end it got grossly ableist.

MC literally didn’t give a single F about any of these men, lied, misled and played mind games with them to convince them she wanted to be in a relationship with them by saying whatever she thought would get her into bed with them (which is a super gross way to use people for selfish curse loosening reasons) knowing that there was a risk to their person and not allowing them to consent to taking such risks.

Not only that, but near the end she goes on a date with someone who is essentially chronically ill and makes a lot of ableist and judgmental statements about him while completely taking advantage of him by lying to him about having things in common only for him to end up a victim of her curse like the others. And she couldn’t care less.

What an awful character.

Just super gross and unkind. I lost the small amount of respect I had for the MC after that.

There is a lot of filler and boring fluff through most of the book. It’s unfortunate because the writing was semi-decent and it had a lot of potential to be really good, but I can’t get past the way the MC treats and uses people.

No thanks.

Cerys is a cupid with a love curse, who is hiding her magic by running a dating agency with her best friend. Lots of crazy mishaps and bizarre situations in this one, as it's intended as a rom-com.
I will readily admit, I didn't find this funny. Most of the bits intended as humour were actually just really annoying and I kept waiting for them to be over so the actual plot could progress. Because here's the thing: it's actually a great story. There's a bit of a drawn-out mystery (that will obviously span the series), searching for cures to curses, treasure hunting for siren feathers, and a whole bunch of magic happenings. It also has the slow burn fight against love Kelly St. Clare always has in her books, where you know it will take until the very end of the very last book for the MCs to finally get together and not run away the next morning.
It does feel like it's a spinoff of another series (I know most of her other paranormal books have been in the same world, but this is one where everything is out in the open so it's not) because there's a lot of barely mentioned things going on that it seems like we were already supposed to know, like the siren feather hunting. It also says that all the creatures stem from Roman gods, but there's a whole bunch of standard other paranormal things thrown in like vampires and werewolves that just don't with the world building.
It was interesting enough that I'll continue to see where it goes, but I am hoping it stops trying to be funny.

I really like Kelly St. Clare as a paranormal romance author, she writes strong female MCs who are funny and have a brain in their head and that's pretty refreshing in this genre lol. The side characters she creates are always three dimensional and believable, and the male MCs are likeable.

That being said, she has this weird thing about leaving her books on cliff hangers, its less noticeable in her other series that I've read, but in this book its horrific. the book is ~250 pages and ends on a cliff hanger with very few of the plot points solved, it just feels unnecessary. She could have written one or two really good normal length books instead of 3 (or 4 not sure how many in this series) really short books that are kind of sub par.

A little disappointed that this book didn't live up to the bar set in my head for Kelly St. Clare's writing.

Not sure about this one. I did like it, the friends were sweet and I liked how they stuck together. The curse was definitely the best part and I did enjoy Dev's pop ups. It does have an ominous feeling of getting caught in power struggles or some sort of magic draining. I'm curious but think I'm gonna wait this one out for a bit.

A great deal more light-hearted than St. Clare's other books. There's still a very subtle undertone of seriousness and an intricate plot, however, it hasn't been revealed a great deal in this first book. The sequel definitely leaves much to anticipate and I'm excited to see how far Kelly St. Clare will balance out the animated characters with a more serious plot.

I'm already a fan of this writer but I can safely say that this is her best book since Blood Trial (another supernatural series) with immense humor and world building. I'm sure that almost all of the reviews will mention how you will be laughing out loud from the first chapter, well it's true.

This book about Cerys and her bestie (a mystical fury) running a magical dating agency in a world of supernatural creatures influenced by the gods, was so much fun and had me smiling throughout the book. I loved the characters from accident prone cursed Cerys to berserker detective Devereaux to all of the lovelorn clients.

Two things impressed me and stood out to me with this book, it's focus on love and commitment and it's worldbuilding. The love focus is a given because of her occupation but we see it in all of it's forms from arranged marriages, soul mates, broken hearts and the denial of it. As an avid romance reader I've read paranormal/fantasy/shifter romances before but this one felt unique in it's exploration of companionship. The other aspect that I appreciated so much was the world building. St. Clare does not just shove a bunch of creatures into the real world, she gives them their own space filled with magic charms, magical businesses, a hierarchy, language and characteristics. It was on a level I haven't read in a while and immerses you into the book so much more.

This book is a delight and I haven't even touched on the full plot and mystery that is connected to Cerys but that is another intriguing part of the book. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who loves supernatural romances or fantasy sprinkled with humor and the beginning of a fantastic series.

Spice level 6/10, ARC provided by author, opinions are my own
