Danny-Lee (known as Lee) had hung up his raving shoes long ago but an unexpected funeral and a chance discovery in the loft send him hurtling back to his youth and to the wild and uncharted rave scene of the early 1990’s.
With a hardcore soundtrack playing in his head Lee gets on a mission and through chaos of flashbacks and visions reaches a new understanding of the rave movement and his part in it.
Read Lee’s story and share with him the memory of the time of his life.
Fantastic book about Lee and his raving mates from the early 1990’s. The book is set now and Lee is reminiscing about the past due to and unexpected funeral of one of his friends. You can tell the author lived and raved during these times by the way it’s written and his passion for the scene. Anyone who raved in the 90’s will be able to relate to the experiences in this book. 5 stars.
All the rave stories were brilliant, can't fault the guy for those chapters. They were genuine and funny as hell with dialogue that instantly transported me back to those days in the early 90s. Loved how the travelling and the after parties/come-down sessions received so much attention too. I didn't go to raves until a couple of years after but the journeys to and from venues remain as memorable as the events themselves. Then going back to someone's house, someone on the decks, people rolling spliffs and everyone talking complete nonsense 🤣 ...it's all in here. There's a mention of a whistle with a rainbow lace through it. That put a big smile on my face as I still have one myself!!
Now the negative. The chapters between all the rave flashbacks are horrible to read. It's clunky and awkward. There's no flow to anything. Pages and pages of wishy-washy meandering metaphors that annoyed me from the very start. Some of the words used were completely bizarre, and I'll bet my entire record collection this guy had a thesaurus tab open the whole time he was writing this book.
It's worth reading if you want a look at what raving in the UK was like, from a personal perspective. The culture is there, the drugs are there, the friends you make and lose and the amount of nonsense you spoke 🤣🤪🥴
My favourite DJs are all in here too, Bukem, Ratty, Micky Finn, Slipmatt, Top Buzz...
Gutted that I can't give it more stars. Half of it was so good. It was just painful getting to those sections.
"Going out to my raving crew each and every time."
