After the emotional gut-punch that was the final Cute Mutants book, you'd think I wouldn't rush into reading another book in the same universe.
You'd be wrong.
Shitty Mutants is a super-fun spin-off with a whole slew of new mutants with some, rather unique, powers. I liked all of them and their interactions (even if Baked Good got on my nerves A LOT) and the cameos by some of our favorite Cute Mutants were fun and well-done. None of them felt forced, nor did the reveal of the villain or the relationships that form between various characters.
S.J. once again crafted a good story with engaging characters, and honestly, I enjoyed this one a lot more than the previous spin-off Weapon uWu, if only because even with multiple points of view characters, everything seemed to fit together and flow a lot better.
If you're a fan of the Cute Mutants- and why else would you be here, check out this latest spin-off.
This time we have Miseryguts (a mutant who has a frog that absolutely hates them and keeps reminding them every minute) that moves into an appartement building full with other mutants that don't wanna go to Mutopia. The building is also a mutant named Little Park (who's also a POV). The other POV's are Dozer, who has the power to make everyone fall asleep when she sleeps herself and then we have Sluggo, who can spit slime. Besides that there are mutants like Seater (who can turn into couches), Confusio (who can confuse people) and ofcourse Duck Rosa (a duck). Oh, and Baked Good (who can turn stuff into cake and she loves to be baked good) makes a return!
Little Park is in danger so these mutants wanna help her. They do this by going through a special entrance in Little Park where they have to fight something they've never fought before...
So, all of the characters are pretty damn unique. My favorite ones probably being Miseryguts (especially by the end) and Sluggo. All the personalities of the characters were so different and it still worked together so well. I also really liked that some of the Cute Mutants made a small appearance.
The romance between Sluggo and Little Park was so cute. They don't overtake Dylan x Dani as my favorite Cute Mutant-verse couple but they're close...
Overall an amazing experience!

While I was really hoping for a story of mutants just sitting around bantering and going through their daily drudgery with a few minor mutant problems, I ah e to say that the usual world ending threat plot really grabbed me. It’s so embroiled with the characters, all of which I totally adore (none more than the slug girl), that its entrancing. And so good to see the Cute Mutants from someone else’s perspective - something that really would have helped book five in the series. An excellent foray into spin offs.
Loved this new iteration in the Cute Mutants universe. The characters in this one really hit deep for me and not one of them were actually shitty. So good. So, SO good. 💜
