4 witchy stars

Aradia Black returns to her hometown Valport Springs, when she finds out she’s a witch. There she discovers the truth about her legacy and a family curse that has haunted the Black women for generations.

I will start by saying that, as a huge fun of all witchy things and as someone who watches Charmed at least once a year, I knew I was going to like this book from the beginning. When I started reading Black Magic, I was immediately sucked into the story, first of all because it is indeed a very interesting one and secondly because the writing was so light and easy to follow. As the story unfolded, I got even more intrigued to find out what will happen next and before I knew it I had devoured the whole book.

I loved the gothic vibes and the world Kassandra Cross has created in the small town of Valport Springs. I loved our MC, Aradia Black, and her LI, Ludovico Cabot. I loved every scene, when they were doing something witchy and I loved the story as a whole.

The only reason I’m not giving this a 5 star rating is because I wanted more of Aradia and Ludo together and maybe a chapter or two from his perspective, because I felt like something was missing in the romance department.

That being said, I recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal and witches, secrets and lies, forbidden romance, a little bit of an age gap, family curses and a beautiful gothic setting.

A huge thank you to The Next Step PR, Kassandra Cross and e NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of the book for an honest, voluntary review.

The first book in The Witches Of Valport Springs is one intense, hot and fast paced read!

Ari goes through a lot in this book, she finds out she's a witch, moves to another country and is finding out more about the family secrets. Then we have Ludo, he's exactly who she should stay away from but can't. I mean, who could stay away from him? He sounds great in this - tall, handsome and a bad boy. Yes please!

If you're looking for a new paranormal series that you can really sink your teeth into and get completely lost in this world, then I highly recommend this book! I can't wait for the next in the series to see where Kassandra takes this!

4 stars. Great world-building, slow burn romance, had a slow start but still worth the read.
I hesitate to describe this book as a 'romance' novel simply because the book spent less time actually exploring the romance between Aradia and Ludo than other novels I read. Sure, that is because this is first book and the focus is on establishing the history and what is going on but there is a romance in this novel. Throughout the book, there are a few scenes where they meet, chat, flirt some more, sleep together, but Aradia is very hesistant due to history behind both of their families and her aunt forbidding her to stay away from him because of the prophecy that exists between the families.

The meat of this book is far more focused on the story of Aradia, who discovers she is the most powerful Dark witch and her ties to Valport Springs. Despite the book focusing more on history and establishing a very tense slow burn between the two characters, I really enjoyed it. I think the book is probably better for it, because then reader would not understand what is happening so I am so glad the author took the time to establish a story first while also giving us that steamy romance as well.

I absolutely plan to stick with this series as I enjoyed how the author built the world, loved the town setting, and was intrigued by all of the secondary characters. I suggest to all the romance readers to take a chance on this book, because Aradia's and Ludo's story is not done yet so there is more romance to come. But if you enjoy a solid background story about two magical families, dark magic, and prophesies, you might enjoy it as much as I did.

I just wanted to thank the publisher, Kassandra Cross and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of the book and giving me the chance to do an honest, voluntary review.

This was an interesting story that had me intrigued. There are so many secrets and I can’t wait until they are all exposed. The intense connection between Ludo & Aradia is addicting. I love anytime they are together. I need the next book ASAP. This was my first book that I gave read from Kassandra and it won’t be the last.

Thank you NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op & Kassandra Cross for providing me with an ARC of this book.

This is a story of magic, darkness, lust, and romance.

PLOT: After witnessing a horrible murder at her home in London, Arcadia Black's life changes forever. She discovers that she is a witch, and she has to go back home to Valport Springs, a mysterious, forest town. It's there where she starts discovering the truth about who she really is, her legacy, and the curse that has been haunting the Black women for centuries. It is there that she also meets Ludo, a dark, mysterious man that may or may not bring many troubles into her life.

THOUGHTS: I like the neo-gothic surroundings, the mystery of the town, and the secrets. I like the secondary characters and what they can be in the next books. They haven't been unfolded yet, so we have still a lot to learn. The paranormal element, the darkness, the romance are some of the things I really enjoyed.

What I would like to see more is Arcadia's character. I think it felt a bit bland how she faces some things that are happening. I would like to see her more tortured about what happened in London; and more curious as well. She is just accepting mostly everything with not many questions asked, and it seems bizarre to me.

I wouldn't mind learning more about Ludo as well. It seems little information so far, but I expect this to happen in the next book.

I defintely enjoyed the book, and I will read the next one. I hope to see more character evolution.

ARC from NetGalley

I'm not quite sure where to start with this one. It doesn't appear to have been edited well, and at the end there is something by the author asking people to email her if they find errors. Like, I understand that ARCs are not 100%, but when I find things that should have been caught by spell check, it irks me. Pachouli? And Why Is Pachouli Randomly Capitalized? Her aunt is Marian one moment and Marianne the next. One day we're in Valport, the next Valpot. Your readers aren't crowdsourced editing. Edit your shit.

Okay so Aradia Black is living in England with her mum. She comes home one day and finds her dead. She then hides out for several weeks. We are told nothing about how she spent that time, but we do know that she fled the murder scene without grabbing anything, yet later on in the story she is glad she packed her black minidress. Your mom was just murdered. You're being chased by something that wants you dead, hiding out because it will be able to track you within minutes if you leave your safehouse, and yet you found the time to make sure you fetched and packed some clubwear. Right.

She eventually flies to Boston to live with her aunt. She kills a dude at the airport apparently just by looking at him because he irritated her. Throughout the story, she is told almost nothing about her magic, where it comes from, how to use it, etc. She asks almost no questions. She consumes some kind of potion from her aunt to help her forget crap and heal from her trauma, and maybe that's why she never asks much about her magic? She never practices with it. Never does anything with it aside from open a gate and kill a couple dudes. We are never really told what exactly her magic does, just that she is incredibly powerful.

After a few days, her aunt has work to do so Aradia goes off to wander around town, after having discussed with her aunt that she murders people just by looking at them when she is slightly agitated and without any information on her magic or how it works or any kind of training or discussion about how not to kill people by accident. Makes sense.

She is offered a cat, and though she has no pressing place to be, she takes it home immediately without arranging any kind of food or litterbox. The cat then stays in her room for days, I assume shitting under her bed all the while.

The 'romance' was very meh. It wasn't really reeling me in. I cringed so hard during the sexybit (there's really only the one scene and it is relatively meh). She calls her clit her jewel. HER JEWEL.

Anyways. There were too many plot holes, not enough interesting shit happening, too little exposition, half-assed editing, a relatively crap romance, and a meh sex scene. The book ends on a to be continued, and I will not be continuing.

When 19 year old witch Aradia Black witnesses aftermath of a horrible murder at her London home, she is forced to go back to Valport Springs - the secluded forest town where she spent much of her youth. Valport isn’t like any other town - it's filled with magic, sin and lust. And it also happens to be home to some of the most powerful witches in America. There she will rediscover who she is., what curse is upon her family and what fate has in store for her.
And there she finds herself in the clutches of Lucifer, one of the most elusive and powerful men she has ever met.

It should have been at least 3.5 star rating from the description and knowing myself that I enjoy these types of books. So why such a rating? I will be honest - this book was tough one to rate and even harder to explain how I feel about it.

I'll start with the positive side. Once I finished reading, I could see that it had an interesting plot idea and we could have learned more about history of the curse, covens and Valport in general. Because it was little bit told, but not enough. I liked her aunt and her man-candy :) Also I did like Ludo - I wanted to learn more about him. Or at least get a chapter from his POV.

Now to the not so positive side. I disliked how main protagonist Aradia was written. Without spoilers: in first 2 % of the book, she 'does something horrible to a man at the airport.. And her somewhat casual inner thoughts angered me. It is later revealed why she did that, but there was no remorse. I don't know how to explain it. Even after horrific events at her London home, the thing she so casually did in her anger at the airport; there was no human level sorrow what I felt from her. No matter what happened to you, you should at least feel some shock and guilt. Once you read first chapters, you get what I'm talking about. And after event at airport, she continues like nothing happened.

Then after short time in Valport she already meets mysterious Ludovico Cabot. For me she radiated dumbstruck lust and no backbone. At already 33% she mentions that she wants to please him and make him proud. I thought that maybe he's controlling her in some level or she experiences his lure and temptation and it will wear off. But no. She was just like that in her core.
Up until 50% not a lot of happens - except her meeting Ludo and her ignoring her aunt's warning. And then for a period of time that felt like an eternity, she was trying to find a club. I will not comment on grand finale, but I will say this - I did not expect to read word jewel, while describing (you will find out what it was).

Overall - I am bit sad about this. There was a potential, but unfortunately the story failed to keep my interest. The story had a chaotic pacing and it felt like I missed some major parts of information about important parts of the book. Like characters and plot. I hope other readers will have better reading experience than me. But thank you author for this and good luck with second book! :)

This is easily one of my favorite reads of this year. Black Magic by Kassandra Cross really blew any expectations I had out of the water. The writing was fluid and eloquent, the imagery was thought out and encompassing without being overwhelming, and the character building was just enough while also being built upon as the story progressed. I immensely enjoyed that you thought you knew what you were getting when you pick up the story, and by the end you're questioning everything you thought you knew about this book and reading storylines in general.

Alright ... and the chemistry between Aradia and Ludo... I mean I am still fanning my face over all of their interactions. The build up was perfect, it Kept you wanting more without waiting way too entirely long but then still left you wanting more more more. I am so excited to see how their chemistry and relationship unfolds in book 2. These characters have passion by the truckloads and I am here for it.

The only thing I did not like about this book was how quickly it was over. I need book 2 yesterday and cannot wait to dive deeper into the magic system and bloodline witch ancestry, the relationship with the witches and other supernaturals, and learn how Ari comes to grips with her power. Read this book - it was just so good.

A great storyline about Aradia Black that pulls you in and makes you want to know more. She is just discovering that she has been a witch whose parents were killed. She had been whisked away to live with a guardian and away from where she grew up to keep her safe. Ludovico Cabot is the type of guy that women fantasize about. Tall, dark, handsome, and a bad boy from hell! According to the prophecy, Ari will either kill Ludovico or he will kill her. Will this come true? Or will the sexual desire that they both feel for each other change the outcome?

I’m not sure if I'm rooting for her to throw caution to the wind and root for her to bang his brains out more or encourage her to forgo the hot sex because evil is lurking. Ah, who am I kidding? We all want her to go for it. Spicy scenes in this book are not over the top. From 1 to Laurell K Hamilton, I would rate this book as a 1. You can read this in public and not blush.

I will be reading the next book to find out what happens next!

Thank you so much to The Next Step for sharing an advanced copy of Black Magic by Kassandra Cross with me.

This is exactly as it says on the tin!

When Aradia Black learns her true heritage she is forced to leave her home and find solitude in Valport Springs. She begins to learn why exactly she needs to be protected.

However, things take a turn when she meets handsome devil, Ludovico Cabot. Their scenes together are seriously spicy! And their tension is palpable.

It's a short and quick read, that lovers of Laura Thalassa will certainly enjoy. I do wish it was a bit longer so we could explore Ari's relationship with Marian and what exactly is going on. I also wish we had more Ludo scenes because I had to fan myself every time he came on the page.

Trust me! He's a saucy one!

This was such a fun, quick read, cannot wait for book two!

Four stars!

Black Magic is the first book in The Witches of Valport Springs series. I had mixed feelings about this book and I almost dnf'd but I stuck it out. I did not care for the main character Aradia at the start of this book. Without giving too much spoilers, her attitude was a bit of a turn off and in my opinion her lack of remorse for what she did at the start made her not likable. Additionally the story felt a bit slow in the beginning and only picked up half way through.
Filled with witches, curses, suspense and mystery this novel did have and interesting story line. I thought the suspense element was intriguing and I am interested to find out more. The two main characters had fantastic chemistry even though there was a forbidden element to them being together. I liked the secondary characters who all added to the story.
The novel was short and fast paced and ends in a cliff hanger. I'm hoping we'll get more interactions between the characters and learn more about them in the next book. I will continue with the series to see how the story progresses. I will recommend this novel to those looking for a short paranormal romance.

All the things I've been in a mood for recently. I'm a fan of reading series when they're complete, but this really caught my eye.

''Hell is empty because the Devil is already here.

I know it's Book 1, but was left wanting more romance between Aradia and Ludo - but that could just be my impatience. I did love their connection and interactions! Tension + Spice *Chef's Kiss*
I didn't have a problem with the Pet Name , but can see/understand why people could.

Overall, I enjoyed the read. It was quick, fun, spicy, and look forward to seeing what happens next for Ari and Ludo!

I loved this book. The story was intriguing as hell. Aradia and Ludo's romance is intoxicating and sexy. I needed more of it! I wish that the romance would've been explored a tad bit more, but what we got was downright delightful.

This book focuses on Aradia, who discovered recently that she is a witch. We see her rediscovering her roots and her hometown. It was great to see this, and I feel like I got a better understanding of the world building from it. The ending seemed a little abrupt to me, but I am thankful for a lack of a cliffhanger. But even without a cliffhanger, I am so ready for the next book, which is wicked talent from Kassandra. I've got so many questions that I need answered (especially about the vibes I get from a not seemingly evil character. I started watching that character heavily towards the later scenes. I need to see if my suspicions are correct!)—disclaimer: I could be totally effing wrong though 😂

Witches, Demons, Secrets and Spice and all things Magic.... What more could I ask for to keep me company on a rainy Tuesday tucked up on the couch 🌧

Throughout this book I just wanted more. I was only planning on doing a 30 minute sprint read and ended up binging the full thing, I just couldn't put it down.

Apart from the main character Aradia, I don't trust anyone in this book and that makes me love it even more... it's brimming with secrets just waiting to be spilled. I was intrigued to the point I became suspicious of every interaction Ari had with somebody. I could feel myself waiting for the inevitable ball to drop which obviously comes right at the end!!! Queue the cliffhanger drop and now the inevitable wait until August when I can dive back into Valport springs for some more mystery, intrigue and very large dash of Ludovico Cabot.

I kind of fell under this this book’s spell when I read the synopsis. Witches, shifters, demons, magic, it’s all there and a genre that I rather enjoy. But I the spell wasn’t enough to really keep me enthralled for long.

First off, I feel l Ike the story could have been more of a stand alone in that it had a start and a finish. Instead this is more like installments and while I was left wanting more, I also feel a little let down at the end of the book.

Then there was the “Little Girl” pet name that creeped me out a little. She’s an adult, but this makes it sound a little predatory and yet condescending at the same time.

This could be a fabulous series, if the author makes some tweaks and finds her groove. I’ll check out the next book or so and hope some changes are made. But it certainly has the foundation to evolve and become one of my must reads!

Trigger warning for animal death! The FMC’s kittens are killed in the beginning of the book, which pissed me off more than the 3 humans who are also killed in the first 10% of the novel, because WTF. Don’t just spring that on people!

FMC just found out she’s a witch and her aunt sends her a grimoire, so naturally her first act as a newbie witch is to make a sleeping potion and immediately drink way too much after the first drops don’t work after she waited 10 seconds or whatever. She didn’t even finish reading the instructions before deciding to knock back enough to fall asleep for three weeks. Too stupid to live, I’m telling ya!

Honestly don’t even know why she needed the sleeping potion at all, because she has no problem falling asleep on the floor sleeping with the potion, heading to the airport, using the potion again on the plane from England to Massachusetts, and still manages to fall asleep in the car on the way to her destination, where she is given even more potion upon arrival, enough to put her out for “a few days,” says her aunt. She wakes up at 4 AM from a nightmare and get this… goes back to sleep. Jaysus! Get this woman some stimulants for her narcolepsy and take that dang potion away from her, FFS!

Her first day out on the town, FMC goes out for mimosas with her aunt and then there’s a random misplaced chapter?? Chapter thirteen in my ebook seems to have been replaced by an identical copy of chapter sixteen, so i have no idea where the aunt headed off to, and then she’s and is again, TSTL and lets him take her to a second location—literally carries her off— In a better book, the FMC would then be human sacrifice to the dark gods and either A) we cut to an investigator on the scene, and the book is actually about them figuring out whodunnit, or B) the dark god appears and turns out he’s a chiseled six-foot shadow daddy who doesn’t want to kill her, but he might just EAT her… 😈😈😈

But no, this is not a good book, so they just leave and she takes another nap in the car. I’m so worried about this woman, you guys.

Everyone the FMC meets speaks in riddles and gives her no real information, making all conversations feel like pointless exercises in time-wasting. The other half of the book is just FMC doing the stupidest possible thing… leaving the house at night in heels with no car and no clue where she’s going just to ask a random gas station stranger to point her to a club, hitching a ride with the aforementioned gas station stranger, getting out at a creepy abandoned building and just going with it…

Buildings burn down and collapse right in front of her, but she’s too horny and dumb to even ASK about it, just goes home with MMC anyway. MMC appears to have the ability to

This is the first book I have read by Kassandra Cross and I'm sure it won't be the last. It was good short read.

The storyline is great and has potential to develop into a great series, unfortunately for me, the characters failed to keep me interested. The story seemed to move so fast it felt like I'd missed chunks of the book and any important information relating to the characters. The book didn't engage me as much as it could have and I'm left feeling was that it. So why 3.5 stars do I hear you ask? As I said at the beginning of my review, the storyline has the potential to be a great series. The author has a great writing style.

DNF. Too creepy for me. “Little girl” references gross me out. Guy is abusive. MC too unaffected by everything. No connection.

I really wanted to love this book. The idea is there, the characters are interesting and likable, but nothing really happened. Pacing was my issue with this book the entire way through.

Aradia Black moves back to her hometown in the US after a catastrophe and learning she is actually a very powerful witch. She tells herself during her first outing into the town that she’s not going to worry about meeting men at all with everything else going on in her life, only to minutes later meet Ludovico Cabot and throw that notion out the window. Which, is completely fine normally considering this is a romance novel.

However, we’re left with the majority of this book without much happening. Much of the story is told to us rather than shown. We only meet 3 witches during the book, we’re led to not trust any characters as everyone is constantly telling our girl she’s in danger but not a soul will tell her any kind of details to help her out. She appears to be constantly being drugged by someone - being fed alcohol, potions, or just being influenced by another person. There is a curse but we’re never given the actual details of it.

I enjoyed Ari and Ludo’s chemistry but there really was no romance here. Ari is a bit head over heels after their first encounter. I want to say they met a total of 4 times in this entire book. There was minimal spice.

And then the cliffhanger. This is not a full story that finishes and sets up for the sequel, it just ends with a “To be continued”. I’m disappointed because nothing really seemed to happen the entire book. This was like one big introduction only to end and be told you need to wait for the next book. That said, I really did love the characters and setting so I’m hoping to see more actually happen in the sequel.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

A spicy forbidden romance

A big thanks to NetGalley and the Victory Editing CoOp for providing me with an ARC copy of this book to review!

I absolutely loved this take on magic - Black Magic follows a woman, Ari, who finds out that her life is a lie. She's the hidden child of a powerful witch family, and has to return to their family home in order to stay alive as her magic begins to awaken.

Enter, Ludo - a mysterious man Ari has an immediate connection with, but her aunt is warning her off him like she knows something more...

All of the little intricacies and rituals in this are delightful - their magic is based in the magic and rituals modern witches perform, and it was lovely to see the practices represented so faithfully. The only issue I had with the magic was the use of sage smudge sticks - a closed practice of Native Americans - though that only happens once.

I'll admit that at times, the pacing felt a little off - a lot of time was spent in the mundane moments, and then suddenly you were knee deep in drama that died off fairly quickly.

And Ludo, where do I begin - he's a mystery wrapped in an enigma, and after one book there's still so little of him to know - other than the fact that he's big, beautiful, and an absolute magnet for trouble. I'm very curious to find out more about him, and see more of him and Ari *fans self*

Overall, a fun read! Definitely one for people who like their magic a little different, and like their love interests dangerous.
