A longtime escapist into books, M.A. Lee began writing cozy mysteries and romances when other sources of that gold ran out. The gold nuggets of Mary Stewart, Georgette Heyer, Andre Norton, Phyllis A. Whitney, and Elizabeth Peters inspired her to write her own nuggets, even if they're only pyrite.

Look for the Into Death series, set after World War I, and the other books in the Hearts in Hazard series.

Favorite Books of all Time:
Mary Stewart's My Brother Michael.
Mary Stewart's This Rough Magic.
Georgette Heyer's Venetia.
Ellis Peters' The Virgin in Ice.
Andre Norton's Year of the Unicorn

Authors that I will recommend beyond the influences and the favorites: Dorothy L. Sayers. Tony Hillerman. Tamara Leigh. Patricia Briggs. Lindsay Buroker. Linnea Sinclair. W.R. Gingell. Agatha Christie. C.J. Cherryh.

I’m putting this in my DNF pile but it was so short it was hard not to finish. It was also very painful to finish, IYKYK.

First things first, I will always support authors and their hard work in putting together a story they care about and worked hard on. That being said, I get sent lots of arc copies and get get asked for book reviews. I will NEVER accept money for reviews. All of my reviews are honest and unbiased. And even if the book wasn’t my cup of tea, that doesn’t mean I don’t adore the author and their other works.

This book…was a pretty big disappointment from beginning to end. The title of “bully romance” is very misleading as there was no part of this story that involved a bully , romance or any combination of the two.

One of the main problems I have with this book is the age of the FMC. She is 16. In high school. And for me…a dark romance and underaged minor do not mix. I’m completely ok with YA teen romances but I , as an adult , do not want to read about a child’s sexual experiences in any way shape or form.

My second MAJOR problem with this book was that it essentially felt like a how to guide on how to successfully get into an abusive relationship.

Talon is the definition of toxic, abusive , narcissist who has never been told no in his life and solves all of his problems with his fists. The way he gaslights Mallory from the MOMENT HE SEES HER. He knows nothing about her but admits from the moment he first saw her he knew that he wanted to make her his. Creepy.

Mallory has ZERO backbone. Goes from one toxic relationship right into another. Allows Talon to emotionally and mentally abuse her. Like any good abused woman, she thinks if she just gives in and talks quietly and nicely to him that he will be better. She’s the one that can “save him”. Plot twist. She cannot.

This was a quick read. An hour total. Maybe more if you count all the eye rolls and face palms I did throughout. It’s just a big no.

The blurbs are deceiving. It’s not a good story line. Doesn’t end or begin well. It’s just one to toss in the DNF pile for me , unfortunately

This was definitely not what I was expecting after reading the blurb; it was way too high school for me and that book cover doesn’t fit this type of story at all. It’s about anger issues and a possessive relationship for a couple of high schoolers; there’s nothing really original to the story that makes it stand out as different either. Regular high school girl, Mallory, is super distraught about her cheating loser boyfriend dumping her because she wouldn’t have sex with him. She’s a perfectionist type person; she’s a bit of a brat and she’s very naive, but she’s mostly a nice person. She ends up meeting new guy Talon; they have an instant connection, it gets deep and intense fairly quickly. Things aren’t all happy for the new couple though. There are some sweet moments for the couple, but immaturity and certain issues get in the way at times. The story is okay and there were some touching moments, but the writing is a bit simple and I was ultimately dissatisfied with how the story ended. That could be because it looks like there will be a second book that will show these characters in the future; I do kind of want to see where they end up and see them mature, so I may check it out. I just hope they won’t still act like high schoolers when they are in college and older.
