A dangerous job, trickster gods, monsters, and ancient artifacts are just extra. Alaskan bush pilot, Piper Tikaani, can’t seem to stay out of trouble. First, it was werewolves and ancient ice age were predators. Now it’s worse. The old gods of her people have come back to play. Only their idea of fun is world ending. Worst of all, it appears that Piper’s dad was the one who invited them. Her alliances are few—two werewolves and a part-time witch. She still hasn’t solved the death of her family friend, discovered where her boyfriend’s fortune in gold came from, or why he was kidnapped. One thing is clear though, all three issues are related. She never claimed to be a detective. All she wants to do is finish her air transport season, hang on to her werewolf boyfriend, and keep them all alive. But the trickster Raven is back, and he’s up to his old ways. Unfortunately for Piper, the only magic she has to fight her enemies is shapeshifting. That’s only ever gotten her in more trouble. What does a bush pilot have to do to stay off the radar? This is the action packed sequel to Shadow Winged . If you like unique Urban Fantasy based on Native Alaskan mythology along the lines of Patricia Briggs, CE Murphy, and Faith Hunter, you’ll love this new series!

Jilleen Dolbeare is the author of the Shadow Winged Chronicles, an urban fantasy series about a shape-shifting bush pilot in Alaska.

She loves riding horses, warm ocean beaches, and long walks in the mountains, none of which she can do in the Arctic, so she writes.

Her activities are riding her four-wheeler on cold ocean beaches (often frozen or covered with ice), and long walks to and from work when it’s 40 below—in the dark. She does keep her stakes sharp for those vamps that show up during the 67 days of night.

Jilleen lives with her husband and two hungry cats in Barrow, Alaska where she also discovered her love and admiration of the Inupiaq people and their folklore.

Shadow Strife

Loved Shadow Winged – and was asked to review the new book Shadow Strife by the author.

The continuing story of Piper, whose best friend is a Witch, her boyfriend a Werewolf and her father – well I don’t want to spoil that. Set in Alaska, this is the continuing story about a Native American bush pilot who is not all what she seems.

This book is the 2nd in the series (Shadow Lair and Shadow Wolf really being short novellas, coming before and after Shadow Winged).

Though it answers some questions (who Piper and her father really are). It leaves further unanswered queries regarding Eagle’s plan for the Earth and humanity. None of it good.

I loved the incorporation of the Native American legends, being from the UK don’t know a lot about, though I had heard of Raven the trickster (courtesy of an episode of Stark Trek Voyager).
Piper is a strong willed, character and stands alongside Werewolf boyfriend Fletcher to protect and help the innocent Shadow Winged (shape shifters) targeted by the Immortal god like Eagle.

But who are the Sky People and where did they come from and why did they come to Earth? Guess I will have to wait for book 3.

This second book of Ms Dolbeare's Shadow Winged series digs deeper into the Inupiaq legends and lore.
The MC gets a bit self centered at times, feeling responsible for the bad events happening to she and her family, also thinking she knows better than beings eons older than herself.
Piper continues to learn more about herself and her abilities. The Silla corp, which was after her in the first book continues to harass and things are coming to a head.
Quite curious to see where the story goes in the next book

I received a digital ARC, but I had also purchased the physical paperback book:

Book one felt more like a mystery, with fun twists and shocking turns, but Shadow Strife has "the chosen one" story we all love!

Within the first 30 pages you get the shock of your life! And after that, the story just keeps on winding! Things that were unresolved in the previous book quickly get resolved, stakes are raised, and NEW questions and revelations appear!

Dolbeare does a great job continuing the story, expanding on the characters we already know and love, and introducing new and interesting characters!

I am already so excited for the next Novella, Shadow Witch, and book 3, Shadow War! I'm already recommending this to anyone who will listen!

You do NOT want to miss out on this series!

Unfortunately I didn't read the first book, so it took me a little bit to get to know the characters. But once I did, I had trouble putting it down. If you like the supernatural, Werewolves, witches and other were's , this book is for you

This is another great book in the series. It picks up right where book 1 ended. The characters feel real and the pacing is good. I can’t wait for the next one!

Well things really get complicated in this, the second in the series! The revelations keeping hitting from all sides, I feel battered and bruised in sympathy with Piper, my goodness, is EVERYTHING she believed a lie? Yes, well, to find out what EVERYTHING is, you need to read this book, I know you'll be just as agog as I was. But let me just say, there's a revelation I was NOT expecting, couldn't foresee it at all!

Although not the MC, Bran is definitely my favourite character. I love her denial that she's a witch but she ain't convincing me that she " only uses a bit of magic"! I loved her doggidness, how she refuses to let anything go and her passion to scour for information. Her relationship, if one can call it that, with Fred is actually quite humourous. They both obviously have "a thing" for each other but hey, I can understand them skirting around their feelings, Fred is thousands of years old after all.

The MC, Piper is rattled by, well let's just say, discoveries. One of these is that a war is brewing, people are being kidnapped and awful things done to them. He dad has kept her in the dark forever, and I mean forever, talk about an overprotective dad and you wouldn't even touch the tip of the iceberg! He does dribble a bit of info and I loved that Piper had some of her power unlocked. I would have liked to read more about her attempts though. The characters that are introduced are cool. I felt so much sympathy for Jane, poor wolf, used against her wishes, she finally has a chance to not be afraid. There's Jed too, and he's so cute in his persuit of Bran almost like a love struck teen.

Ancient beings, shifters of every size and shape, an eons long feud, take magic, folklore and myths to new heights.

As interesting as it was, I found it a bit slow in the middle of the book and the pacing a little inconsistent. I also found the various clans/shifters/others, a bit confusing and too much at times, I struggled to make sense of the various creatures. What I didn't struggle with was the overall plot, I got a sense of a culture steeped in myth and lore. Ancient beings, shifters of every size and shape, an eons long feud and fledgling powers come alive! The tension and mystery is almost tangible and I've already starting book 3, I have to know how this battle will pan out, who will triumph

The old gods are returning and Piper and team must be ready, what is it between Raven and Eagle, the truth will shock Piper.
This gets better as it goes and the characters are excellent/

As a resident of Anchorage Alaska and as someone who has spent nearly forty years working in the native communities around the state, this book series is not only entertaining buy informative. I have always for native culture and mythology fascinating. I have never had such a great crash course in native mythology. I wish I had had these books to read when I was traveling to bush communities to work with native employees of school districts. I was so fortunate to work in villages and communities from Barrow to Metlakatla during those forty years. I realize the native mythologies and cultures differ from region to region in Alaska. I’m sure that the mythologies described in these books may differ from those of southeast Alaska’s native cultures. I think these books are a great read even for those who have not had the opportunities to work and live in remote regions of Alaska. I have read the the first two books in the trilogy and am already starting the third. I hope this author continues to write many more culturally relevant thrillers in the years to come.

This was not quite what I expected, it was better. Piper, a shadow wing shifter, knows her father has more information that might help with the fight with Silla corporation as well as more about her background and powers.
Between her dad and Ben, there is so much more to know. It’s quite the adventure finding out what they know and are willing to share.
This book has different shifters, different culture, ancient beings and artifacts.
There is a lot of background that at times was a bit confusing but I found as I read, it became clear. There are so many different reasons for things happening.
There is action, mystery, suspense, some humour (not a lot), some romance, tension, and surprises.
As the mysteries around certain people become clearer, the story gets more intense.
I can’t say that this was an easy read, some parts weren’t but it was a good read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Alaskan planes and folklore are a marvelous background for book 2 in the Shadow Winged series.

Piper is still trying to come to grips with her heritage and at the same time work with her dad flying people and supplies.
Bran her BFF, Fletcher, and Fred along with her dad figure prominently in the book.
Real emotions and adventures are so interesting and intriguing, its hard to put down. My heart was in my mouth with fear for Piper and her friends and then on the edge of my chair praying they would win against her destructive uncle.

Am looking forward to the 3rd book! You can't go wrong with a Jileen Dolbeare book or the ones she co writes with Heather G Harris.

This book didn't move as fast as Shadow Winged, and seemed to have a lot of teen angst vibes despite the MC being in her mid to late 20s. Overall, I think the book suffered "middle tale syndrome" - just like "Empire Strikes Back" it's the bog you have to wade through to get between the excitement of the beginning and ending stories. (I know, a lot of people love "Empire", but it's my least favorite.)

Don't get me wrong, important things do happen in this book that I'm sure we'll need to know in the final book, but there is a LOT of searching for allies (who only appear on the periphery and don't impact the story), talking, and waiting that goes on between the little bits of action.

I received Shadow Stife by Jilleen Dolbeare though BookFunnel. I enjoyed reading and recommend. Piper is a shapeshifting bush pilot who wants to stay off the radar but she, her friends, family and a few supernaturals they can round up are the only ones that may possibly stop what is coming. War is coming between gods, monsters and magical artifacts against humans and shadow wings , will they survive? This book is part of a series and I recommend. This is available on Amazon

This just gets curious and curiouser

I’m loving this series and I’m finding it very hard to put down (stayed up way too late as I was nearly finished it!!!). Piper just keeps getting more and more information from Raven and is conflicted on how she feels about the information her father is now giving her. Fletcher is getting closer which she is very happy about, but her uncle keeps upsetting the balance of her life and so many others.

Oh my gosh I decided to read on my iPad a little instead of the kindle and the images/ornaments at the beginning of chapters/sections have color! I can’t decide which I like better, black and white is beautiful too, but I still adore them all! I want a sticker pack or something. Her niece, the real Baylee, did such a great job with the art.

I enjoyed the book, I’m a fan of the series. I like the characters a lot and I really like the Alaskan setting and Indian mythology.

Even better!

I liked the first book, but this one is great. More legends and Alaska lore, story moves along but still keeps you guessing. I found this author from her current series so went and found these previous books! While waiting the next in the current series she is writing I'm loving the earlier books!

This was a great

Enjoyed it immensely but it was a roller coaster ride the whole way through. Things were great then there was kidnapping and fighting and finding more allies. I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.

Just plain fun to read

The folklore intertwined with modern times is intriguing. Unraveling the mysteries connected makes for an enjoyable read. I actually started to read slower, not wanting this series to end.

DNF at 45%.

I really wanted to like this book. The premise is interesting and I think the folklore is cool. I just felt like it moved so slowly. I wasn’t feeling as engaged as I would like and just didn’t feel like finishing it.

Fantastic

I am loving the native Alaskan lore come to life. I've always loved mythology , but I knew little about Native Alaskan mythology. This has been so exciting. The author has a g4eat sense of humor too. That has made the book fun.

I love a feisty heroine

I've read 2 books in the Shadow Winged chronicles and I've loved them. The plot unravels like a skin of mukti coloured wool revealing lots of different places for the plot to go to. Well written and it's certainly made me want to read up on Alaska folklore.
