C- at AAR, so 2.5 stars Sometimes in doing the TBR Challenge, we learn more about our reading habits than we realized. Since the May TBR Challenge prompt is contemporary romance, I went combing through my stacks – and came up almost empty. Most of the single title contemporaries I buy are books that I want to read right that minute, so they tend not to linger in the TBR. After dithering a bit, I settled on Irene Brand’s 2008 release, Love Finds You in Valentine, Nebraska. I remembered liking a few of Brand’s inspie romances when I was about twelve, so I decided to give this a whirl.

My twelve-year-old self might have enjoyed this book, but as an adult? Um…train-wreck would be a good term to use here. I actually read it in one sitting, but as I read, I kept thinking that this was a book that I really should just DNF. So, what kept me reading? I kept wanting to know what wacky piece of plot would come next. I did like the characters, but they are trapped in an unusually clunky plot.

The general setup of the book is that Kennedy Blaine, daughter of a wealthy California family has come to Valentine, Nebraska to see the family ranch. Her father has died, and she is curious to see the place that was his heritage. We learn pretty quickly that Kennedy’s parents both grew up in Valentine and that theirs was a forbidden marriage between two feuding families. Even after reading the book, I’m not 100% clear on why these families carried on a multi-generational feud, but it sets up the storyline, so I guess we’re just supposed to roll with it.

It was definitely a very fast read. I was able to get this done very quickly, and found it extremely hard to put down. Although I felt the Christianity beliefs really came out, I don't feel it took away from the story. It was nice to escape to a place I had never been as well, and even though the dialogue was a bit corny, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think Ms. Brand really painted the picture of the ranch Kennedy was on beautifully, although I somewhat wish she expanded on the small town life a bit more. Derek's character was nicely written, but I do feel he was a bit feminine in his actions and not the typical "cowboy" picture that has been painted in most TV shows, movies and books. I'm considering reading other books in the "Love Finds You In..." series after reading this.

Cute story about a city girl who inherits a ranch and the cowhand who doesn't know if he should trust her motives... and the trouble they stumble into.

I struggled to stay involved in this one, because there were many things my inner editor kept catching. The whole time I kept telling it to be quiet, but sometimes it doesn't listen very well. For readers who don't work as copyeditors, this story would be delightful. I hope to try another of Irene Brand's books soon.

This was perhaps the best Love Finds You I have read to date. With solid characters, and interesting storyline with several subplots, this book kept my attention from start to finish. Good clean romance, a little bit of mystery, and constant dependency on faith definitely made this an excellent read.

This is the worst book I have ever read, and I read all the Twilights. I got it as a gag gift for my cousin who lives in Valentine, and decided to read it before giving it to her. I will still give it to her, but I will definitely warn her about the ridiculousness of the love story, which happens over the course of JUST ONE SUMMER. I will also warn her about the completely offensive views about adoption and a person's self-worth. I will warn her that the main character is completely flighty, but she prays so aparently that compensates for her flightiness and the dismissive way she treats some of the people in her life. I will warn her that it paints a completely absurd picture of what it is to be a "Christian".

book was full of too many fripperies, idioms, and common phrases to like. it felt like the author was trying too hard to show off her writing abilities or memory.

This book tells a complete story. The series is held together very loosely by a common theme of American communities and Christian authors.

Kennedy is a privileged rich kid whose father dies and leaves her untold riches including the ranch in Valentine. Derek is the foreman. For a rich kid, Kennedy is likeable and mostly down to earth, but she acts like someone who has no money worries.

Two threads in the story are 1) Derek doesn't think he's good enough for rich Kennedy; and 2) there are threats against Kennedy that get progressively more dangerous sounding. Well into the story, another element gets added that is closely related to these two.

I'm not the biggest fan of stories that are primarily romance that mix in a dangerous mystery with a criminal element. Mysteries that have a romantic element are different. Stories like this one tend to compartmentalize the danger mystery element. The threat is mentioned once in a while but not taken seriously enough until it blows up and is quickly dealt with. In this case the villain turns out to be inept.

Regarding not being taken seriously enough, no one in this story every thinks about a security system until the danger is past. Events still could have progressed much the way they did, but the oversight is glaring. The excuse that you don't need one in a small town is belied by the progressive nature of the threats.

The story continues long after the mystery climax is becomes mundane. The story isn't overly long to begin with and obviously something was needed to fill the pages, but the result made it drag. There are a couple of major issues that are tied up late in the story, but it could have been done quicker.

Like so many romance stories, this lament that "we could never be together" is repeated a little too often. It is made worse by the fact that I found the reason unconvincing to begin with.

There is a definite theme of looking to God for direction and protection. For the most part it is not preachy.

Mature themes: there is no sex. There is some violent criminal activity, but it is relatively mild. The main characters do not drink alcohol.

This was a sweet love story. I'm enjoying these books in the "Love Finds You" series. They are all Christian love stories, so they are perfectly clean and cute. This one was very predictable and a bit cheesy at times, but I still enjoyed it. It was fun to read this one in the series that takes place in Valentine, Nebraska since I've been there as well as other locations mentioned in the book. Although this was a cute and romantic story, I think it was drawn out to be much longer than it needed to be, with not a lot happening to move the story forward at times. Some bigger excitement happens in the second half, but it was quickly resolved without building as much tension as I thought it could have. Overall, this book wasn't anything fantastic, but it's nice to read clean, romantic, love stories.

While I was drawn into Kennedy and Derek's story very quickly, and really appreciated the focus on faith that the book had, I wasn't as 'convinced' by the love story. While I liked Kennedy, and could easily see why Derek grew to love her, I didn't really ever come to like Derek overmuch, and couldn't really 'get' why Kennedy loved him, other than that he was 'strong and hot' (for lack of a better description). I thought Derek was heavy handed and insecure, especially with regards to feeling like he alone needed to protect Kennedy, even though he kept saying she was 'too good for him'.

I have so many books sitting on my bookcase for years and I'm starting to read the books I have. This book by Irene Brand, a new author for me, was a good story. For me, it did drag out a little bit about harassment part of the story, but I did finally get back into enjoying the story. It was a sweet and clean romance story.

Since Irene Brand is a new author, I'd like to see what other stories she has.

Love can be found in the darkest places. The cover of the book draws the reader in. The woman on the cover looks beautiful and it shows a farm. The reader can already see that the book will involve property. There are no pictures inside the book, but the reader can hear the voice that the author displays. I find it interesting that Valentine, Nebraska is a real place.

Clunky plot that's drawn out too much. Lots of straight dialogue instead of descriptions of landscape or emotions. Pretty straightforward but honestly slightly dull.

Okay, the actual writing was terrible, but the entertainment was through the roof! So many hilariously awful moments. I’ll be recommending it to anyone who wants a good cringe-fest.

New author for me. I saw many grammatical errors and poorly written parts. In spite of this, the story was good, but not great.

After Kennedy Blaine's father dies, she discovers that she has inherited her family's ancestral ranch in Valentine, Nebraska. She decides to see it for herself before she agrees to put it up for sell, even though there is already a buyer waiting in the wings. When Kennedy travels to Valentine to look over the ranch, she meets Derek Sterling, the ranch foreman, and his mother June. When she sees her family's historical home, she falls in love with it and decides to stay through the summer before making her decision.

Once Kennedy moves in, she starts receiving threatening messages telling her to get out and go back to California! She relies on Derek and June's knowledge of the town, and the local townsfolk, for information on who could be behind the threats. However, Kennedy can be a tough gal when she needs to be, and she eventually makes the decision on her own.

Derek tries to protect Kennedy as best he can, with the help of his faithful sidekick Wilson, but parts of his past start coming back to haunt him. Dark secrets that he'd rather keep hidden begin to unravel right before his eyes. There are things that happened in his early teens that he's ashamed of ~ he feels like he is unworthy of forgiveness from others as well as from his Heavenly Father. Derek would rather Kennedy not find out all of his secrets because he's afraid she will go back to California without a backward glance, and he's not sure if/how he'll be able to handle her leaving.

I thoroughly enjoyed Love Finds You in Valentine Nebraska! It was an excellent choice to introduce me to the Love Finds You... series. I thought it was going to be a romance, but there's quite a bit of mystery/suspense involved as well. If you haven't tried any of these books, you should definitely pick up a copy of Love Finds You in Valentine Nebraska ~ you will not be disappointed!

Isn't this cover beautiful? There's Wilson, on the bottom right ~ he's one of my favorite characters in this book! =)

This is more of a 31/2 stars but since that isn't an option I want with four.

Kennedy Blaine was born on the Cross C Ranch, which has been in the family for generations, but she hasn't returned to Nebraska since she was an infant. Her Blaine relatives had visited them in CA but her mother's family, The Morgans, carried a grudge and never have. When her father dies unexpectedly she inherits the ranch along with the rest of his considerable wealth. Her cousin, the accountant in charge of the books for the ranch, wants her to sell but Kennedy refuses to do so without at least seeing the place.

Her arrival is unexpected and her initial meeting with ranch foreman Derek Sterling is a bit hostile. Like the mature adults they are, they talk their way through the problem and Kennedy finds herself sitting down to dinner with Derek and his mom. He takes her by the ancestral home and she determines to stay and get to know the ranch. Everything seems to be going well enough until she starts getting threatening notes ordering her to leave Nebraska. She is enjoying being on her family's land and enjoying getting to know Derek even more. Should she leave for her own safety or stay and fight for what is rightfully hers?

This came as part of a two-pack sale and I didn't really expect to enjoy it. Ranches aren't really my thing. But Kennedy and Derek were winsome characters and the story moved at a brisk pace. I found myself liking it and especially enjoyed the role reversal between Derek and Kennedy. She is the alpha, wealthy, confident, attractive and a go-getter. He works for her, is relatively poor and isn't used to chasing after what he wants. he is still very masculine - the type of guy to take charge on the range and is protective and strong but it is Kennedy that has the reigns in the relationship. It worked well for them as a couple.

This was not a bad book. The book just took me forever to read. It was a very sweet story. I personally believe it was the reader (me) and not the author. For some reason it did not grab me.

What a read? This book is one you will read in two to three days. You won't be able to lay it down. Kennedy Blaine inherits her family's ranch after her Dad passes away. She has not been in the home since she was very small. She lives in California and travels to Nebraska to see the ranch and why her Mother loved it so.
You learn about family fueds and how they divide families. Also there is a story about Derek who was adopted and then abandoned and left in Chicago, Il. He runs into trouble with gangs and is in one foster home after another until finally adopted by someone who loved him. It can show you how people can change when put int he right situations. There is a surprise at the end of the book I won't share as it would ruin it for you.
Derek has problems thinking he is good enough for Kennedy. In my own marriage, I always felt not good enough for my husband when I was dating him so I can relate well to this. Thank God we worked through it just like Kennedy and Blaine did in this story.
I liked how Irene showed the struggles deciding in a relationship about love and how relationships grow regardless. A book about how love really grows and finally ends in marriage.
Seeing Lyn Cote on here as a reviewer means a lot too as she is a fine author in her own right.
Wealth, kidnapping, danger, and love all wrapped together. Life happens

It seems like every month I turn to this series for a book to fulfill a challenge, and often times, I'm re-reading them after a long absence. This one is no exception, and I was in the habit of making notes about the books in the series. The note on this book simply said "Not bad-Modern Western." After reading it this time around, I intend to be a bit more thorough! It was a decent way to spend a Sunday afternoon, but there were times where I found my interest waning a bit. The religious aspect was very overt, which could be a bit off putting to a non-believer or even someone that has a lackadaisical view of religion. The constant comparison of social situations also got annoying at times. There was a few very minor mysteries that were easily figured out and resolved, which helped keep the story flowing when things got very annoying. I liked that both main characters were strong people but also needed the support of one another. As I don't currently own this one for the Kindle, I don't have the ability to say if it is a keeper or not. Would I recommend it? Yes, but only to those that are very interested in Christian Romances, and only if I added in several others to choose from that I enjoyed more than this read. Would I purchase it for the Kindle? At its current price, no way, but if it dropped to $.99 as some of the other books in the series have done, perhaps.

This is only my 3rd Christian Fiction book, so I'm just getting used to the style. I have to say that although this one got "preachy" at times, it was done in a way that didn't detract from the style, which I enjoyed. I think I would have enjoyed this more also if I was a fan of contemporary romance, which I'm not really. I'll take a historical romance any day, but contemporary is not really my thing.

The other thing that bugged me was the varying pace. They would spend a whole chapter talking about a single day, and then half of the next chapter was a whole week/month/whatever. It made me a little disoriented. And the ending dragged on a little too long. I feel like after the climax of the plot (Derek agreeing to marry Kennedy) that the resolution wasn't needed/took too long. It could have ended at that point and been perfectly happy. And while I understand the reason for the additional resolution time (Derek finding out about his birth parents) it was just "meh" for me.

Overall, it was a fun read and I did enjoy it. Maybe even enough to read another book by this author in the future.

Just loved this story...Such a poetic book about how love triumphs...This story starts out with a significant loss to the main character that takes her on a journey back to her birth place after the death of her father. There she finds the home and the ranch beautiful. She meets a "cowhand" that comes to her rescue many times as she had been receiving threats to her life from another man who is an attorney and was representing her father's interest in the ranch.. This story takes place in a small town in Nebraska called Valentine..For those that have no knowledge of Valentine it is truly a rustic little town.

The "cowhand" himself had a very hard childhood which comes to an interesting end in the book as well as a grandfather who thru her parents in particular her mother out of his home because of a conflict. This book reminds me of the Hatfields and McCoys.

If you are looking for a little romance, mystery, some historical references than this would be the book to read.
