Revenants #4

To Die For: A Die For Me Novella

Rate this book
Picking up five years after the events of the DIE FOR ME books, TO DIE FOR follows 17-year-old Louis, once numa, now transitioning to bardia. As Paris's revenants face a new threat, Louis joins them from where he's been living in isolation in Brittany.

Louis is tasked with giving insight into numa strategy, in case of attack. But he must also work side-by-side with Siaka, a young guerriseur and chemistry student at the Sorbonne, to establish a worldwide liaison between Flame-fingers and bardia. That is, if their budding romance doesn't get in the way.

Through Louis's story, TO DIE FOR reconnects readers with Kate & Vincent, Jules & Ava, Georgia & Arthur, Charlotte & Ambrose, as well as Gaspard, Charles, Bran and other characters from the beloved DIE FOR ME series. Romance, mystery, adventure, and—who knows?—maybe even a wedding.

Amy Plum is the international bestselling author of the DIE FOR ME series (Indie Next List pick, Romance Times top pick, and recipient of a starred review from School Library Journal). The books have been translated into thirteen foreign languages. The trilogy is accompanied by three novellas entitled DIE FOR HER, DIE ONCE MORE, TO DIE FOR and a compendium entitled INSIDE THE WORLD OF DIE FOR ME.

In DREAMFALL and NEVERWAKE a radical experiment to cure chronic insomnia goes wrong, and its seven teenage test subjects are plunged into a shared coma populated by one another’s nightmares; those who die in the dream will also die in real life.

Amy's action/adventure/magic duology, AFTER THE END and UNTIL THE BEGINNING, received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, 4 1/2 stars from RT Book Reviews, and enthusiastic reviews from Kirkus, USA Today, ALA Booklist and School Library Journal.

After being raised in Birmingham, Alabama, in a rather restrictive environment, AMY PLUM escaped to Chicago to an even more restrictive environment at a university that expelled people for dancing. (And where she was called to the dean’s office for “wearing too much black”.) After all of that restrictiveness, she was forced to run far far away, specifically to Paris, France, where she only wore black and danced all she wanted.

After five years in Paris, she ventured to London, where she got an M.A. in Medieval Art History, specializing in Early Sienese Painting (1260-1348) mainly because it promised almost no hope of finding a paying job afterward.

Amy managed to find work in the world of art and antiques in New York. But after almost a decade of high-pressure lifestyle in the Big Apple, she swapped her American city for a French village of 1300 inhabitants.

After signing with HarperCollins for the DIE FOR ME series, Amy left her job as an English professor at Tours University to write full-time. She now lives in Paris with her two kids and her black lab, Oberon.

She is a huge fan of Edward Gorey and Maira Kalman (and collects both of their books/art), as well as David Sedaris, Amadeo Modigliani, and Ira Glass.

“we’re stuck here, so we might as well enjoy it. right?”

i am so so upset that i hated to die for, but truth be told it definitely deserves it. after years of having read the revenants series, i randomly found out through the new releases page that this exists and came out just recently. as it’s also fairly short, i thought i might as well finish off the year 2021 with it. that’s what i’ve done, but at what cost?

the novella is trying way too hrs to be something that is way better than its reality, by suddenly putting in queer characters where they haven’t been before, probably just as a fan service because they realize it’s the 21st century and queer people exist. but it was so badly done, had no purpose other than the so called “romance” that was gonna take place due to it. and a bad one at that, because it’s absolutely groundless, insta love-y and, to be fair, stupid.

the protagonist goes around telling that saying this and that isn’t politically correct, throwing in out of place things such as lockdowns just because it was written during the pandemic; all things, that are just unnecessary and, again, try to make the novella something that it is definitely not. other than that, there are SUPER UNNECESSARY pop culture references like mentioning billie eilish out of the blue, and for what?? that shit is embarrassing love, try to stay in your lane and stick to your script. the characters we’ve gotten to know over the course of the series suddenly feel so out of place, too, and i understand that a novella is not the place to fully flesh out things — but that again just proves my point of the unnecessity of everything and then simply just don’t write the story lmao. it’s super repetitive due to the lack of plot and, therefore, just groundless dialogue everywhere that takes us absolutely nowhere.

everything is also so RUSHED?? breathe for a second please oh god. so unfortunately, after being excited to dive back into this world, i’ve absolutely hated to die for and wish to erase its existence out of my brain please.

I forgot all about this world, but it came up because of something else and I discovered there was another book!
Honestly, I don't recall much about any of the characters, but this was a great adventure in the world of revenants, if nothing else. There was enough of a reminder of the world to help you jump back in, without it being constant rehashing. The balance wound up being perfect.
I liked the attraction and tension in here: it's fairly insta-love, and there's not really reason for it, but they went on adorably sweet 'dates' around the city, and those moments were well worth it. There are a few developments in the world, and it honestly could add more books from this point, but the ending is there and it's enough.

I don't usually write reviews much anymore, I get too caught up into the fictional worlds and move onto the next book. To be totally honest, the cover of this book alone deserves an award. I ordered the ebook to read it ASAP, but I'll also be ordering a paperback copy for this beauty to sit on my shelf so I can stare at it as much as I want.

It's been awhile since we have ventured into the world of the Revenants and this was the perfect adventure back with favorite characters. I really enjoyed the new characters, I think that they fit into the universe perfectly and were fun to get to know. I think that this might have been my favorite part of the series.

As having a special interest in chemistry, it was very exciting to see chemistry have a tie into this story. And I'm not just talking about the romance kind of chemistry, because there was plenty of that too, I'm talking about the science stuff. Having a science aspect always makes things seem so much more real.

This was honestly a great Christmas gift to readers from Amy Plum, I highly recommend fans get it as soon as possible. I also highly recommend it to people that are not fans as well because that cover is just beyond gorgeous and everyone should have its beauty on their bookshelf.

The author has greatly improved since starting the Revenants series. Louis has a much better voice than Kate. (He also sounds completely different.) He's more positive and funny, despite dealing with stuff from his past.

The relationship was also better done. It was a crush at first sight but the relationship slowly developed and we actually got to know both characters. (I totally didn't realize Saika, his romance, was a boy from the blurb.)

Usually the best parts of a book like this is seeing your favorite characters from the original, but I didn't care about them. We did get to know Ambrose better, (He's actually a character now) and his relationship with Charlotte was really cute. As was the little bit with Arthur and Georgia. Vincent doesn't trust Louis, so he's mostly seen scowling. It's cute that Kate and Vincent adopted a kid, but their lives are sure different than I expected.

I skipped the short stories, but there were a few references. (Which made me NOT want to read them.) I don't feel like I missed much though, because Jules was barely in the book.

The end felt rushed. Like the author suddenly realized this was supposed to be a novella not a novel so she just ended it where she was. There's no resolution! It's like a teaser.

This novella really didn’t do anything for the storyline. The ending left it wide open for her to resurrect this story is she ever wants to, or runs out of new ideas. I’m really shocked that she didn’t have Georgia turn into a bardia since it seems like all of her other human characters that fall for bardia conveniently do. Really, the only thing this novella accomplishes is having Kate and Vincent and Georgia and Arthur get married.

Didn’t need the F word.

Homosexual Romance

I got partway through before I realized the romance in this book is a homosexual one. The description didn’t clue me into the fact that Siaka is an 18 year old boy. I enjoyed the original series, but this just wasn’t for me.

Having lived in isolation with Bran, Louis finds it a little awkward to reintegrate into a social life when he's unexpectedly summoned to La Maison to assist with Numa insights and a project that will link the Bardia and the Flame-fingers worldwide. His adjustment is further complicated by his immediate attraction to Siaka, a young Guerriseur he is working with in the project.

Due to the importance of the project, Louis is conflicted between staying professional or acting on his feelings. What if their relationship turns sour and affects the good progress the two entities are making? How can he prove his loyalty to those who are sceptical and wary about his loyalty?

While not as good as previous books, which I had hoped would explore the challenges of his Numa transitioning into Bardia instead of focusing on his love story. It's still a welcome update on the familiar characters, catching up with them several years after the events in the last book.

The Die For Me series has always been a favourite of mine. This paranormal YA bestseller offers a unique spin on the “undead”. It also takes place in Paris which is dreamy and rich with history.
It was so lovely to revisit the world of the Revenants and tour the sites of Paris. Amy always makes the scenes and locations so visibly clear and enchanting.
La Maison remains a familiar home to me and I enjoyed the reemergence of my favourite characters. Georgia is still feisty as ever and I loved the new addition to the family (no spoilers).
In this novella we catch up with Louis again a few years later. Louis had a challenging time finding his place in a new world and family but is able to evolve throughout the story and find his place.
I will forever love this series. I even created my own Signum Bardia pendant. Yes, I’m a huge fan!
You really must grab this series!

A fiery read!

As Paris's revenants face a new threat, he joins them from where he's been living in isolation in Brittany...

I want to cry - this was just a swoon-worthy and lovable romance I have read. These guys were so amazing, their chemistry bleed off the pages. I could feel it - so magical and fiery.

It was amazing getting into another revenant book and this time from a new character.

I am upset that it finished too quickly - I just more and more of these guys. But I'm extremely happy this story was written and I had the utmost pleasure in reading it.

Full of revenants, flame-fingers, death, destiny, danger, action, mystery, adventure and romance.

Perfect for readers of paranormal romances.

The one wasn’t really worth it if you’re looking to have a story with our returning characters. Sure, Kate, Vincent, Charlotte and the others are in here, but it is either minimal or they made the characters annoying and not like how they acted in the previous novels.

The wedding at the end was blah. That’s what I was waiting for and it wasn’t what I wanted.

Arthur deserved better than Georgia, and I will die on that hill defending this opinion.

I loved this series but was really hurt by the ending of #3 because of what happened to the gay couple (which apparently the bigots forgot even existed). Seeing all the homophobic reviews for this volume has me super excited to see what happens in #4! I'm going to reread the entire series to refresh my memory and have already ordered a copy of this newest book.
