On the one hand, I'm still intrigued by the premise of an apocalyptic dust storm, and the havoc it wreaks on the nation (world?). The science of it was and still is rather fascinating, and I found myself super invested in the stories of the main characters trying to navigate the storm to various destinations. I may not be gobbling the story down just yet, as it's pretty slow-moving and repetitive (still), but I considered myself solidly in the game anyway.
And yet, on the other hand, I noticed something upon reading this third entry of the series: I'm uh, getting kinda bored here. Now don't get me wrong; I was VERY into the story until around the 30% mark on my Kindle. I was liking the pace and where things were going. After that, though, I feel like it faltered and wobbled and couldn't quite find its footing anymore. Characters were doing nonsensical things. Typos were becoming more glaring. And I found myself more sighing.
Things that didn't bother me before were bothering me now, namely the multiple points of view taking entirely too long between them. I understand simultaneous chapters, but for some reason, it just frustrated me even more how long I had to wait to return to a character's POV. It simply no longer felt like a single, coherent story where even the passing of time was believable. Many events that occurred in a chapter just didn't mesh well with the others and it got annoying.
Furthermore, plot wise, I'm really, REALLY not interested in the whole Grove storyline, like at ALL, and from how this story ends, it seems that whole thing is taking a more prominent role in future entries. I remember proclaiming in a previous review how I understood the need for antagonists in the apocalypse, and I still do, but this one is just, well.... not working for me. Then there's the shoddy developments to some of the characters, their behaviors, their dialogues. Just...ugh.
All in all, I liked the story just as much as I didn't. After that 30% mark, it took me way too long to get through (thanks to my aforementioned boredom), but I did get through it. The only problem now is the sudden lack of interest in completing the journey. I kinda don't really much care if characters will reach their destinations, not like I used to. At best, it's a mild curiosity. At worst, it's a curiosity I no longer wish to satisfy at this time. Perhaps in the future, but now....eh. I'm finding myself kinda over it. :-/
Great book 3 in this series by Mike Kraus and Marcus Richardson
Continuing traveling to get home to family while huge dust storms pound their way away the U.S. The world has gone mad with robbing, stealing and murder by different groups all over. Book 4 will continue the quest that some family are pushing and then what will happen.
The dust storms still rage, our people fight for their communities and the people who oppose them fight . Am sure our journey will heat up some more in the next book. Book four.
Another great post apocalyptic book that will have you reading all night. Danger everywhere, people trying to survive. You absolutely won’t be able to wait for the next book.
