Jana Aston likes cats, big coffee cups and books about billionaires who deflower virgins. She wrote her debut novel while fielding customer service calls about electrical bills, and she's ever grateful for the fictional gynecologist in Wrong that readers embraced so much she was able to make working in her pajamas a reality. Jana is the author of 4 books, and all of them have appeared on either the NYT or USA Today bestsellers list, some multiple times. She likes multiples.
I think One Night with a Nutcracker made me laugh even more than the previous ‘Reindeer Falls’ book! I had so much fun with this book! These Sheppard brothers are something else and Sutton and her goats were everything!
Sutton runs a goat farm to make her famous goat soap that is super popular in Reindeer Falls, as well as Etsy. Her farm… well it isn’t quite hers. Not really. It’s some land she’s been staying on with the goats that was abandoned. Until Jake Sheppard shows up claiming it’s his and she needs to go.
Well, Jake is in for much more than he bargained for with Sutton. This was very much an enemies to lovers holiday romance and I was here for it! The goats were the stars of the show, but I loved Sutton and Jake, too! I love Jana’s humor and it really shines in these fantastic and fun Christmas stories!
This had everything I could want in a short and sexy holiday novella - chemistry, playfulness, and some lighthearted Christmas fun. While the first in this trio of seasonal novellas left me wanting more, I enjoyed this one from start to finish. The romance is much more prominent, the characters are more compelling, and the storyline - while a little ridiculous and over the top - had me interested to see what would happen next.
The story follows Sutton, a free-spirited woman who does things her own way. She's rescued a few goats and has found herself running a goat milk business that keeps her happy. That is, until a sexy grump of a lawyer comes to town and informs Sutton that she's trespassing on his property. Jake - one of the trio of brothers introduced in Elves with Benefits - inherited land from his uncle, and Sutton has been running her business on that land. The two immediately clash, and the situation doesn't improve as they're forced to share close quarters. Sutton may hate the man and everything that he represents, but she can't deny that she's attracted.
This is a quick, easy read that you'll likely get through in an hour or two. That means that the story remains light and low angst, the relationship is surface level, and things move at a rapid pace. We also don't get Jake's perspective, which I would've liked having. But it's a lot of festive fun with a little bit of spice thrown in. The enemies to lovers dynamic worked here, and I loved that so much of the novella is focused on Jake and Sutton spending time together. This was just what I wanted to get me in the holiday spirit, and it's got me looking forward to the final installment. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this holiday romance.
Oh my gawd! This laugh out loud funny holiday romance seriously hit the spot!
It’s quirky, funny, and sexy. The main characters, Sutton and Jake meet in the best way. The resulting push and pull leads way to a sexy climax.
I love them both. She’s tenacious, self aware, and not afraid to work for what she wants. He’s a bit of a tough guy who just wants her gone. The only thing I didn’t love about this was the length. I definitely wanted more of their banter and shenanigans.
Recommended for those looking for a super cute and sexy holiday novella!
Even cuter and sweeter than the last read! I didn’t expect to love Sutton and Jake as much as I did, but they’re my favorites so far from this second part of the series. Sutton is a goat farmer who sells her cheese and soaps and loves her precious goats more than people. So when Jake Sheppard inherits the land (and barn) she’s squatting on and threatens to evict her and her goats, it’s time to battle.
Only Jake is insanely good looking and has no place to stay while he’s in town. She lets him stay in the barn, which turns into staying in her airstream, which turns into staying in her bed. And when he defends her and her goats and sticks around for a while, she’s afraid to hope for more. I loved their banter, his 180, her heart and hippy ways, and their happily ever after!
“I have a weakness for beards. I admit it. I know all I should care about is what’s inside a person’s heart, but a beard just does it for me. Or scruff. Anything except a lone mustache and my head is turning to check the guy out. It’s my fatal flaw, and I’ve come to peace with it.”
So this was disappointing. I generally like Jana Aston's books. But this series is just not doing it for me. I loved the volume 1(book 1,2 and 3)in the series. But this second volume (book 4,5 and 6), I am not liking it very much, especially the h. In first book I was like fine, okay. But in this book whole time I was just annoyed with h. I tbh didn't enjoy the book at all, I was that annoyed.
So h have been doing this goat business on H's land without any permission or permit for a year or two. When H returns and asks her to move away and gave her a weak, she just kept call it her land rather try and understand. she just kept acting very immaturely rather coming to any settlement or asking for the land. Rather discussing like an adult she just kept say to H to pack it and leave and she also did something to delay his paper work. can't remember. Not so fun. I really don't want to point out exactly which parts annoyed me, or else I would be post the whole novella.
I am sorry but I am not enjoying it after waiting for so long. Hoping for last book be at least descent. Wouldn't recommend it.
I know if I'm looking for a holiday read with laughs and over the top situations, Jana Aston can never let me down. One Night with a Nutcracker is the 5th story (2nd in the second boxed set) set in Reindeer Falls and Sutton and Jake are an enemies to lovers match made in hilarious heaven. Or was it the goats? Because I think the goats took the cake on this one. This novella topped the previous one for me and had me giggling with Sutton on her goat farm. How she came upon this place and this life shows me that this girl has tenacity. And then we have our city slicker, Jake. I don't think this guy knew what hit him when he drove up to his property only to see there was a squatter on it. With GOATS! Will he kick her out right before Christmas or will One Night be enough for these two??
I adore Jana's brand of humor and the stories she's created in this small Christmas town. They make me laugh and love on the town and the characters. They may be outrageous, but they are funny and sexy with just the right amount of "Hallmark" romance mixed in with Ms Aston's awkward humor. My only complaint I have is I wish I would get the guys point of view at some point in this series. I would've loved to hear what Jake was thinking when he sees this beauty on his property. But I will be happy with what I get with these characters because they also match up so well and their chemistry is hawt. I liked that Sutton and Jake seemed a little more realistic in what they were looking for, but most of all I'm loving these Sheppard brothers that didn't think they were meant for small town living until they meet these women that can change their minds.
This holiday novella and the previous ones are the perfect holiday reads to lighten up your day. You can sit down and read these novellas in one sitting and it will leave you with a smile on your face. For some fun, over the top humor, Jana Aston and the characters she creates will always deliver!
Crazy chemistry makes goat farmer and illegal squatter Sutton Stewart decide ONE time with grumpy lawyer Jake Sheppard might be a good idea, but is it really?? Jake has a job and a life in Detroit along with big plans to build a golf course right where Sutton has her Airstream ‘Ariel’ parked.
“He’s clearly ruining my life… but he looks so damn good doing it.”
I just love these fun Reindeer Falls standalone holiday novellas!! -5 Stars!-
When Jake comes to Reindeer Falls to develop a golf course on the land his uncle left him, the last thing he expected was to find a free-spirited woman running a goat farm on said property. Jake informs Sutton that she’s trespassing. Sutton informs him she believes she has squatter’s rights and has no intention of re-housing her rescued goats who provide the milk for her soap making business. And after being forced to share Sutton’s tiny home, the two collide with spectacular sparks
As with the previous novella, I really enjoyed the banter between Jake and Sutton. Their story was fast paced, light and easy to read. The relationship feels a bit surface level though. We don’t get Jake’s perspective which probably affected my feelings towards the couple.
This was a cheerful holiday story with a goat soap maker heroine who I loved. One more novella to go for the season.
One Night with a Nutcracker is novella #5 from the Reindeer Falls series by author Jana Aston. It is a rom-com, standalone novella told from the heroine's point of view with a happy ending. Subgenres: small town romance| holiday romance | enemies to lovers | forced proximity

3.5 stars Ahhhh ok I rly fucking liked this one finally we get a girl who does not refer to herself as an elf every page. Ughh I loved the relationship between these two. Her love for goats n the fact that she rly cares abt them n would do anything for them. N gave them all a home when whoever didn’t want them anymore just left them on the side of the road. Jake u dirty sexy fucker 🥵 I get she was upset but I wish she heard him out more instead of just jumping to conclusions. Also yes Sutton it was hot when he was defending Martha’s n ur honor.
Welcome back to Reindeer Falls and get ready for Jake and Sutton. I am loving the characters in this series with their intertwined stories. Jake Sheppard is a big city attorney that has just come back to his home town to claim the farm and land that his late uncle left to him. Imagine his surprise when he finds a sassy squatter, her rescued goats and a budding business under his roof. Sutton is a woman on a mission. When she rescued one poor little goat, she never thought that would pave the way for more and a business. She is sweet sassy free spirit with a kind heart. This lovely entrepreneur that not only has claimed rights to the vacant farm for her goat milk business but she is also residing there in her Airstream camper. When a bigtime lawyer stomps into her farm and upsets her goat milk cart she is on the war path. So, what if he is easy on the eyes and has big burly muscles, she is madder than a hornet. One Night is all she needs to get him out of her system and then off her farm! This couple is funny, filled with emotion, have wonderfully witty sexually charged banter and yes have chemistry that has them sizzling off the charts! ~~Michele McMullen ~~
