Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” —John 8:12 Our Savior declared Himself to be the Light of the World. But this story of light piercing through the darkness didn’t begin with the birth of a baby boy under a shining star in the city of Bethlehem. From creation to the incarnation to the coming eternal city, Scripture speaks of Jesus’s life-giving presence and light in a dark world. During this Advent season, we celebrate that the hopes and fears of all the years were answered in Jesus, the everlasting light. This five-week Advent experience features daily Scripture reading that traces this theme throughout the Bible, preparing our hearts to encounter Christmas Day in a fresh way. It is also filled with thoughtful extras designed to help you engage this season as people of light, from daily reflection, prompts to recipes, crafts, classic Christmas hymns, and more. Join us for Advent 2021 as we celebrate and contemplate The Everlasting Light.
He Reads Truth and She Reads Truth are worldwide communities who read God’s Word together every day. Founded in 2015 and 2012, He Reads Truth and She Reads Truth invite men and women to engage with Scripture through daily curated reading plans, online conversation led by a smart and thoughtful community of contributors, and resources created at the intersection of beauty, goodness and Truth. This community of “Men and Women in the Word of God every day” represents a long list of cities and countries, a variety of backgrounds and traditions, and countless real-life stories. But there is a commonality that binds us: we believe God’s Word is Truth. So we read. Every day we read a new passage together—working our way through books of the Bible, topics that matter, and seasons of the Church calendar. We engage with God’s Word and with each other. And we keep coming back, on the hard days and the good days, because God and His Word never change, regardless of our circumstances.
Kids Read Truth, founded in 2016, produces resources designed to equip kids with biblical literacy and instill in them a love for God’s Word.
My annual He Reads Truth study, with 2021 reflection. This is something I look forward to doing each year, and it's less about what I learn from it, and more about the process of putting myself in the right posture for Advent season. It's more of a meditation practice, I feel.
Book rating criteria; to help objectify my ratings. 1. Will I read it again? No, this is more of a one time specific to 2021 study.
2. Would I recommend this to others? I would with caveats. I struggle sometimes with studies that bounce around each day across the Bible. I am more of a continuity reader, so this form of study is hard for me and I find it distracting.
3. Am I smarter, better or wiser as a result of this book? Yes, I think this put me in the right posture for Advent.
4. Was I entertained while reading this/it kept my attention? Yes, the daily reads are quite short and it's easy to do this on top of other priorities.
Though my wife was familiar with She Reads Truth, I had never been acquainted with He Reads Truth until our church provided these books as a guide for our Advent season. I cannot say enough of how much I am surprised and pleased by this book. It isn't fluffy jargon like I have found many Bible studies to be, but rather provides thought-provoking questions and reflections based around passages that have a common theme. The book is also aesthetically pleasing which I fear is something the church has placed aside and so I am happy to see that redeemed in this book. I have grown so much through reading this and have gone on to buy an additional eight books from them as well as the He Reads Truth Bible (CSB translation). If you haven't used any She Reads or He Reads Truth studies, go find one and start right away!
