A whole lot of fun for fans of the series, giving us a chance to say "Aww, Jacob" and "Oh, Vic!" Most are short but a couple of novellas. One thing I found interesting was the way reading these in a block reminded me of the progression of time in this series, and the way that both the characters and their relationship have grown and evolved.

Another great collection of PsyCop shorts and novellas. And thankfully, JCP actually provided a timeline guide with this one so that next time I can read them in chronological order. :D While these were all good, there were a couple of short stories that I'd've already forgotten if I hadn't been taking notes. But most of these still provide great little insights and details in the lives of our guys. Imagine, if you can, Did you hurt your brain? I hope not, because it was hilarious. Vic does know how to get himself into some awkward predicaments. 🙈 Add in There were a lot of fun moments.

So Much Fun!

A few of these stories I had to listen to twice, because Gomez Pugh's performance is so wonderful. LOL, that Christmas caroling scene... I was laughing out loud.

For fans of Jordan Castillo Price's PsyCop series, Seasons is a must have.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Seasons: PsyCop Briefs, Volume 2, is an anthology of stories featuring Vic and Jacob from Jordan Castillo Price’s amazing PsyCop series. This is one of my all-time favorite series and one I have been reading (and later reviewing) for over ten years now. The anthology is set up by season, with each season containing one longer, multi-chapter story, plus a bunch of short stories. Some of the stories take place after the most recent book, Other Half, though most dip back into events in and between past books. Castillo Price includes a timeline that lists all the books, as well as all the short stories in the two collections (which began with PsyCop Briefs, Volume 1). The shorter stories also start by indicating where they fit in the timeline. So it is easy to follow along, even for the stories that take place in the past.

Novelettes and short stories don't really cut it for me - unless they happen to feature favorite characters. Here, the author wisely provides a series timeline and where these novelettes/short stories fit in amongst the PsyCop books. They don't follow a sequential timeline - but are loosely grouped by the season they happen to be in.

It was a joy following Victor as he goes about doing his 'ghosty' things; none of which are particularly hair-raising - and some which proved quite charming. Some don't feature Jacob (presence-wise or even by reference). But best of all - long-time fans of the series will get to 'catch up' with secondary characters such as Crash, Maurice, Lisa, Darla, Ritchie, Sgt Warwick! Some stories were endearing in their 'mundanity' ... fixing lunch, doing house-chores, gardening; and of course there's bound to be humor as Victor stumbles into ridiculous/dire situations not of his own making. Well-deserved 4.5 stars.

Oh, I missed Vic and Jacob SO much! And this was a wonderful way to get on thouch :P

We got to see them at his (sort of) honeymoon in a gay resort with added ghosts; Vic and Crash doing grocery shopping together (yes, I was shocked, too :P ). There is quite a bit of Darla and Lisa and gosh, I love them so much! There is always a smile on my face when they show up.

There is also a moustache growing on Vic's face. No, seriously! And Zig doing some very tough questions ('Why a ghost would have a bike? The bike isn't dead), and Vic manly going in search of coffee and, of course, getting something completely different (did you guess a ghost? you won!).

Maurice has a lovely dog! and a terrifying ghost. And Vic has three fresh-out-of-the-Academy baby police mediums to deal with. Yes, they all mix together as well as you can imagine :P

What can I say? Lots and lots of different flavours in these short stories: there are funny ones, and poignant ones; there are scary ones and thoughtful ones. And all of them are simply delightful.

Just do yourself a favour and gift yourself with this book; it's the perfect self-gift for Christmas. *hugs book*

EDIT: And with this I finish my annual re-read of PsyCop, and no, I never get tired of them.

A good collection of shorts, though some of the shorter fics seemed to be included soley to bulk the text.

It's endearing how inept Vic is, for all his ghosty powers he's undone by the vacuum. Mustering through this adulting lark and hoping not to get caught out.

June 2024 re-read: This isn’t quite as good as the first PsyCop Briefs because it’s a little more focused on mystery stories and a little less on adding to the overall picture of Vic and Jacob’s relationship, or Vic himself. However, I did enjoy these mysteries and other funny bits. In this re-read, I had the same problem I had the first time with shifting gears between the stories due to their non-chronological order, and I don’t really understand why Price did that because the “seasons” theme for the book is pretty weak. I think maybe it’s a way to space out the three novella-length stories? Regardless, it’s a minor problem and didn’t really diminish my enjoyment.

---
Original review: 3.5/5 stars. I love Vic’s extremely cynical, self-deprecating, and sarcastic POV so I’m always happy to read more of it. The stories in this volume aren’t set in chronological order and are all over the timeline so I had a little trouble shifting gears between some of the stories. Overall, this was enjoyable, if not an essential addition to the series.

More Vic and Jacob is always a good thing so for that reason alone I would've loved this second volume of briefs. But there was a lot going on beyond quick visits with the characters. There were a few things that I think hint at future books which is really exciting. In particular, the lengthier Imposter Syndrome was fantastic and raised some interesting questions while also letting us visit a character I love but doesn't appear too much in the regular series.
The stories jump around to different points in their relationship and it was fun to see the progression in such an obvious way rather than slowly over the course of the books.
This series continues to stay interesting and with clear character and plot development even in these short stories. Every book makes me love the series more.

If you enjoy this series you will love this collection of shorts. Many of them are just a day in the life, just Vic and Jacob being themselves together. Some of the shorts were hysterical, think about Vic running, winning a complicated kitchen gadget, or (my favorite) doing normal household chores. The novellas were mostly short mysteries with quick solutions. Because the stories take place between several of the books, you get another look at how much Vic has changed over the course of the series. I listened to the audio version and it was really well done.

This was lovely. Following Victor and Jacob throughout the three years they've known each other was priceless: I loved getting these small glimpses into their normal, day-to-day, life and the weird mysteries and shenanigans they get into.

I think I might have loved the first collection of shorts a bit more, and I was a bit disappointed not to get another Jacob POV, but I adored them all nevertheless. The honeymoon short was beyond lovely.

I can't believe I managed to finish all the books JCP has written for this series: 14 books, and I still can't get enough. How am I supposed to wait for book #13!!!! I already miss Victor. I guess I could re-read in the meantime, no?

I love Victor Bayne! These stories jump around the timeline, but I never felt lost. I really enjoyed the glimpses into more of Vic's personality. You could see the growth of the character from the earlier stories to the later ones. Great addition to the series.

I loved seeing these little things that happened between big events in the books.
I love Victor a lot!
And besides the honeymoon and moustache thing that made me furious with Jacob, I liked him in all the other stories.
I can't wait for the next PsyCop book!

I do love Vic and Jacob. I enjoy Vic's voice so much. He's such an interesting mix of capable and calamity. Nothing ever seems to go smoothly for the poor guy, but together he and Jacob are such a strong couple. This series of shorts runs the gamut of time in their relationship, but all of them were fun little peaks in to their daily lives when some big ghost problem isn't cropping up.

I love how inept Vic can be with the most basic of tasks. He's never going to be Mr. Smooth, but he doesn't need to be. He's finally found with Jacob the one place he can trust that everything's going to be ok. It was kind of fun flipping back and forth in time with these stories as you could see how much more confident he became all based on where his relationship with Jacob was. Earlier on he was still hesitant about a lot of things, but as their relationship developed, sure he was still anti-social as all get out, but he didn't question his own desires or needs as much.

This series remains one of my favorites and I look forward to the next novel coming out soon. :)

Despite really not liking short stories in general and not remembering the plots of any of the past books very well, I actually quite enjoyed this book of shorter and longer stories set during past books in the Psycop series. The author's love for the characters is so clear, and there were enough longer stories with plots that it felt worthwhile.

More fun short stories featuring our favourite psychic, with, as ever, wonderful narration by Gomez Pugh. There's a nice mix of spooky and sexy, paranormal and mundane, as we follow Vic - with and without Jacob - through some terrifying situations, like doing the ironing (!) and sizing up a trio of would-me mediums while trying to help Maurice with a garden ghost! Can't wait for the next full-length instalment in the series.

There are a LOT of 5-star ratings, but the writing is terrific, Vic is at his sarcastic best, Jacob is at his sexiest and swooniest, and nearly all the stories end with the patented JCP-twist. What's not to love?]

The second volume of PsyCop Briefs is arranged by season vice chronological order. Jordan Castillo Price probably had some lovely esoteric reason for organizing the stories in this manner, thus we're likely meant to read them as such. However, Vic and Jacob have gone through a lot of changes over the years, so I'm reading the stories in chronological order to watch their growth. (I tried reviewing them in this order, but it got way too confusing.) Thank you, JCP, for the PsyCop timeline!

Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order.

Last Resort: Jacob's gym buddies give Vic and Jacob a spa weekend at a nearby gay resort as a wedding present. A wonderful story, with a surprise ending that's more sweet than bittersweet. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Potato, Potahto: Crash shares his views on marketing, reality, and tubers. Vic says he once exploded a potato in the microwave. Crash responds, "Only you." Interestingly, National Potato Day came and went while I was reading the book. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

To the Letter: Strip scrabble, anyone? Guess who wins. Or would have won if the game finished. Superbly clever and extremely sexy! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Grass Is Always Greener: Just one example of how Vic and Jacob make the ordinary extraordinary.
Vic notes: The setting summer sun was a golden halo behind him, and drops of water glistened across his perfect cheekbones.
Wow, that’s my man.

Jacob: “Me. You. The cannery. This is all I’ve ever wanted.” *
Me: * swoon ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Treat Me Right: An unprepared Vic is visited by trick or treaters on Halloween. With no candy, he has to get creative with his treats. (Been there, done that!) When Jacob arrives home with candy all the kids are gone, so the guys reminisce about Halloweens gone by. Jacob's best story involves his sister and a magic marker. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Don't Sweat It: Only Vic could turn a soap dispenser mishap and a church-sponsored "cookie walk" into drama. But, hey, he got a nifty sweater out of it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Impostor Syndrome: Maurice gets a Shih Tzu puppy, and Vic gets to show three police cadet mediums the ropes. Vic fails miserably with the cadets and fears Warwick is looking to replace him. When we find out Maurice's garage is haunted, Vic shows the cadets what their future holds. (They don't react well.)

I hate that Vic misjudges Warwick so badly, and the ending (because we know what's coming) is a little sad. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Can't Take It With You: Do bicycles go to heaven? (I hope mine does!) And Crash gets to wax political at Christmas time.
"People value their things way more than they value fellow human beings. Why else do the rich fucks only care about their tax breaks while they worry that someone might be cheating their beloved government out of twenty bucks in food stamps?”
Hey, I'm beginning to like Crash. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

PsyCop Briefs Volume 2
This book is novel length, though it is full of PsyCop stories that fit neatly into the PsyCop universe and each story is briefly prefaced by where it fits into the PsyCop universe. More must-have stories for PsyCops fans! Medium Victor Bayne is back in a series of short stories which capture his glass-half-empty attitude perfectly! Some are lovely glimpses of life between Vic and Jacob, with Vic always slightly unsure and Jacob his calm, faithful rock. Others are funny messes that only Vic can find himself in, while others are more involved spectral stories with a few chapters each. These stories slot in between the now 13 novels and as well as being amusing or touching, they give a feel for Vic’s development as a character and as a medium. I wouldn’t read these until I’d finished the first 12 novels to avoid the occasional spoiler or two but I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone who loves the series. I really hope JCP keeps writing and releasing these, it’s like visiting and reminiscing with dear old friends. I wonder if it’s cathartic for JCP to include so many of life’s petty grievances in Vic’s stories, the overly perky interviewer, the sniggering police recruit, the barista who only has eyes for Jacob - his discomfort is so entertaining! Audio narrator Gomez Pugh IS Vic, I just can’t imagine another voice capturing the grumpiness so well, he’s perfect!

I’ve been fascinated with the idea of psychic abilities for a long time, so reading the PsyCop series was a given. The latest, Seasons, PsyCop Briefs Vol 2, by Jordan Castillo Price, is a collection of short stories arranged by the season the story occurs, rather than chronologically, which turned out to be a fun conceit. The reader sees snippets of Vic and Jacob’s life and work with little threat to their wellbeing, a nice change from the novels. The advantage to short stories is it is easy to put the book down at an stopping point before the book ends. Also the reader is not left having to finish the book once the tension reaches a certain point or being annoyed RL interrupts being able to finish. For some reason, these shorts made me realize how much I have in common with Vic, other than psychic ability. Like our dislike of running. Seasons was a purely fun read and now I’m looking forward to the next PsyCop book with our MCs enjoying married life. I received an ARC of Seasons courtesy of the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Seasons: PsyCop Briefs, Volume 2 contains four novelettes and fourteen short stories. This all-new, novel length collection begins right where PsyCop 12, Other Half, left off. It then cycles through each season, highlighting various moments in the series with laughs, scares, tender domestic scenes, and of course, ghosts—then circles around to Other Half again.

Stories include:
Summer - Last Resort, Potato Potahto, To the Letter, The Perfect Storm, The Grass is Always Greener
Fall - On the Ball, Treat Me Right, Sticker Shock, One Bad Apple
Winter - Roadside Resistance, Don’t Sweat It, Cold Case, Can’t Take It With You, Holiday Cheer
Spring - Dead Zone, Honey Do, Impostor Syndrome, Tie the Knot

Heather's Notes
I enjoyed all the short stories. I really like seeing snippets of Vic and Jacob's life, although this more about Vic. My only complaint would be that I wish they were in in chronological order. Even if you put them in the different seasons, put them in the order they should appear. I did appreciate that they did tell you when they happened.
