If you could read someone’s mind, what would you do with the truth?
Hunted by both the military and her own personal stalker, Dani conceals her psychic abilities and hides in plain sight. Within her mind is the ability to change the landscape of nations. For that, a branch of the government would lock her away—to ensure her safety.
Marc Crofton left his black-ops unit to join his brothers’ private investigative after discharge. A chance meeting with the quiet, unassuming spitfire in his veterinarian’s office sends his world in a tail spin involving spies, both domestic and international.
Each must rely on the other to survive a world where betrayal and deception, desire and trust, weave a fabric that transcends time.
Perfect for fans of for fans of CM Sutter, Dale Mayer, Dean Koontz, LT Ryan, and Fiona Quinn.
Reily Garrett is a writer, mother, and companion to three long coat German shepherds. When not working with her dogs, she’s sitting at her desk with her furkids by her side. Author of chilling suspense and snarky romance, her stories include romantic thrillers and paranormal romance, . Regardless of genre, each book delves into a dark and twisted imagination yet is tempered with romance and a touch of humor. Reviews by Kirkus Reviews, San Francisco Bay Review, and BestThrillers.com best describe her work: "This could be James Patterson, Lee Child, and Tess Gerritsen rolled into one, but the dark, twisted methods used by the serial killer could surprise even those readers…” - San Francisco Bay Review “…steamy, seductive police procedural…” - BestThrillers.com “…well-researched thriller that remains romantically genuine throughout.” - Kirkus Review
Prior experience in the Military Police, private investigations, and as an ICU nurse gives her fiction a real-world flavor.
This is book two of the Mind Stalkers series and the main character is a young woman called Dani, who works in a vet’s office and hides her unusual ability. She used her ability to help aid another woman called Callie, who is the main character in the first book of the series, giving vital information to the people who organised Callie’s escape from the Think Tank Institute where she had been held as a virtual prisoner for most of her life. She went by the name Penny, to protect her identity, but when she arranged to meet Jake, one of the men who helped Callie to escape, he was killed and she only narrowly escaped unhurt. Her description was passed onto Ray, the administrator of the Institute, and this has made Dani a hunted woman. She also has other people hunting her, the Tucker family, who had at one point been her foster family, but the father used her to get information from his marks and his two sons were evil incarnate and nearly killed her. When she refused to cooperate in their crimes, they killed one family in front of her and blamed her for not helping them, thus causing them to kill the victims. She has been wary ever since, but refuses to live a life in hiding, preferring to be in plain sight and enjoys working with animals. Marc Crofton works with his dogs, both shepherds, training them to take part in trials and guarding him and his home, and is often sought for his skills. He left working in the military in black ops, after following his brother Connor into the military, and now works as a private investigator, together with his brothers Connor, Julien and Nate. They also co-own and run a nightclub called Ambrosia. He has met Dani a number of times when he has been getting his dogs looked at and on this visit, another customer makes her uncomfortable, asking her out on a date, so he interrupts saying she is with him and asks her to join him at the dog trials the next day. He is running his dog Darius in these trials, his younger dog and left his other one, Pete at home. He spots the same man in conversation with another man in a suit, at the trials and sends Darius off after him, only for both men to get away, but for Darius to have been shot. This soon involves Marc in protecting Dani, especially after finding out someone has been watching the vet office where she worked and they aren’t worried about using a firearm! He knows his brother Nate is protecting a special woman and wonders if Dani is similar to her and if this is why she is being hunted. As they get close, Dani reveals her part in helping Callie to freedom, in her alias as Penny, but this also brings Colonel Kenson into contact, himself having been searching for the woman that got away and whose description is similar to a long string of young women who have recently been tortured and brutally killed! Kenson wants to have his own team protect Dani, until he can figure out exactly who is after her and especially what her abilities might be. Nate, Callie and their team members all join the meeting of Kenson and his team, in a secret location and Dani is introduced to Lightning, Byte and Wire, who will be helping Marc to keep her safe. Marc won’t tell the Colonel exactly where he is taking her, nor does he reveal Dani’s biggest secret. She can read people’s minds and intent, but only if she can focus and concentrate. Like Callie, it is an ability that needs to be used and trained, which is what Marc and the new members of his team do. They are followed shortly after leaving the meeting, placing Dani in danger, but Marc was expecting an attack and had prepared his and Nate’s teams. Someone is providing information to the other side, people from within the government and also some foreign agents, interested in Callie and knowing Dani will lead them to her. They need to figure out who the traitor is and ensure they are stopped, so both Callie and Dani will be safe to live a normal as possible life. The attacks don’t stop and it seems their enemies have information about their every move. Marc has to team up with Nate and his team, to provide a larger force to counter those coming after the two women. Ray, the institute manager where Callie was held, as well as a serial killer, foreign agents, and the horrible Tucker family, are after them and it seems they won’t stop until they have the women in their hands. Dani hasn’t and the chance to train fully with her team of protectors like Callie and wishes she could defend herself like Callie or be able to use a gun as she has been trained to. All she can do is give warnings to the men and especially to Marc who she has formed a strong bond with, to try and keep them safe. But as with any of these special abilities, they start to waiver and fail when she gets emotional or distracted. A fitting conclusion to this story, with lots of action, a touch of romance and danger all around. They manage to uncover one traitor within their ranks after they discover he has been dealt with by someone with a lot of rage, but I won’t say who! Those after them are highly skilled in the most part, have lots of equipment and access to funds that can buy them anything and anyone, as even the Colonel finds to his shock. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book and if Dani and Callie can locate any more people being held by the Think Tank, in different locations. I’m sure the other two brothers, Julien and Connor, will become more involved, as some of the dangers may have passed now for Callie and Dani, but their abilities will always be wanted, if news gets out about them! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
When Reily emailed me with a request to review Shadow Guard, it was an immediate yes. I had read (and enjoyed) Silent Depths and knew that book 2 in this series was coming up. I am so glad that I did say yes because I enjoyed this book a lot.
Shadow Guard is Demi and Marc’s story. Demi is a powerful clairvoyant who is on the run from several criminal organizations, including the one that imprisoned Callie in Silent Depths. Figuring that hiding in plain sight would be the best, she settles and works at a veterinarian’s office. That is where she meets Marc. Marc is part owner of Ambrosia and works at his brothers’ PI firm after being discharged from the military. He also trains guard dogs as a side gig, where he meets Demi. Marc and Demi’s paths merge when she is attacked at a dog show, and Marc brings her home for protection. Marc realizes that there is something different, something special about Demi, but he can’t exactly pinpoint what it is. But, Demi is hiding secrets, and those secrets can kill. Can Marc protect the woman he is coming to love and prove that he loves her and her gifts? Or will she fall into the hands of evil?
Shadow Guard is a fast-paced book. Because of everything that happens and the time frame in which it occurs (within a couple of weeks of the opening scene), I felt the pacing fit the book. If the book had gone any slower, I think that the slower pace would have ruined it.
I loved Demi’s character. She had overcome so much in her life. I do have to say that I am happy that she had good role models growing up because I feel that she could have been easily turned into a criminal as a teenager (when the criminals were fostering her). She had a strong sense of right and wrong. I mean, she was instrumental in getting Callie out of The Institute!! Plus, she loves animals and formed an attachment with Darius (the Schutzhund that Marc was training) almost right away.
Marc was a boss in Shadow Guard. He knew what he wanted (Demi), and he was going to get it. He wasn’t surprised when he figured out that she was a clairvoyant. He suspected it when he brought Demi back to his house after the dog show. There was a gap between him figuring things out and her telling him. So he was left to think things and wait for her reactions, which was pretty funny. His black ops training also came into play during the last part of the book, when they were tracking down Ray and the Tuckers.
The romance angle of the book was well written. I liked that the author built the romance up and let it simmer before Marc and Demi had sex. That leads to some super-charged sexual tension between the two of them. Once they did have sex, it was amazing and one of the better sex scenes I have read in a while. They were so connected on so many levels, and I loved it!!!
The suspense angle was great. I loved that the author kept dragging out critical points of the plotline (Demi’s abilities, Ray’s evil plans, the Tucker families plans) until I almost couldn’t take it anymore. I had to keep on reading; I needed to know what would happen. And man, I was glad that I did.
There was no big twist to the plotline. Instead, the author threw something very unexpected out and let it sit there. She didn’t resolve that little tidbit of information, and I wonder how it will play into the upcoming books. I can’t (and won’t) let you guys know what I am talking about, but it was exciting, and I have several theories about how the girls are connected. I am very interested in seeing which one is right!!
The end of Shadow Guard was a little bittersweet. I liked that the author wrapped Demi’s storyline up, for the most part. The author left enough unanswered for me to be interested in book 3.
I would recommend Shadow Guard for anyone over 21. There are language, violence, and sex/sexual situations.
‘He had no idea what skeletons cavorted in her closet’
Bicoastal author Reily Garrett has been employed as an ICU nurse, a private investigator, and in the military police – all of which supplies her with the intricate and detailed knowledge from which she forges her books. She addresses issues such as man's cruelty and ingenuity for torment and torture, having witnessed the after-effects of a teenager mugged at knife point for a pair of tennis shoes, or an elderly woman stabbed repeatedly with a screwdriver for no apparent reason- all leaving an indelible impression that will forever haunt her subconscious. On the other side other spectrum of experiences she has observed a woman stopping her vehicle in severe, snowy weather to offer her own winter coat to a stranger, a teenager wearing a threadbare hoodie - life's diversities observed by Reily are endless. Her newest contribution - Book Two of her Mind Stalker series - is SHADOW GUARD.
Reily’s ability to create credible psychic situations has been proven in her initial volume in this very successful series. She now explores further, creating her inimitable characters fully from page one: ‘Dani watched as Dr. Casari breezed through the reception area with purse and keys in hand, smiling at the last client preparing to check out. “Thanks for closing up today, Danielle. Kevin’s soccer match starts in fifteen. With a bit of luck, I can make the kickoff.” “No problem. Tell him to score one for me.” If only life were so simple. Work, household chores, and a little time to relax –shouldn’t that composes the bulk of everyone’s day? Instead, Dani spent much of her life looking over her shoulder for a gun pointed her way or a stalker wielding a garrote…’ Eloquently phrased, the story that matches Reily’s finest.
A quality synopsis is provided – ‘If you could read someone’s mind, what would you do with the truth? Hunted by both the military and her own personal stalker, Dani conceals her psychic abilities and hides in plain sight. Within her mind is the ability to change the landscape of nations. For that, a branch of the government would lock her away—to ensure her safety. Marc Crofton left his black-ops unit to join his brothers’ private investigative after discharge. A chance meeting with the quiet, unassuming spitfire in his veterinarian’s office sends his world in a tailspin involving spies, both domestic and international. Each must rely on the other to survive a world where betrayal and deception, desire and trust, weave a fabric that transcends time.’
Once again Reily proves her position on the platform of excellent mystery novels is assured. Very highly recommended.
Follow up book to Silent Depths, the first book in the series. There's also a short prequel where we meet Dani, subject of this book, and I think to get the best from the series you really need to read those. There's so much background stuff going on, the Think Tank, groups within groups, betrayals, and of course just plain weirdos ;-)
I really enjoyed book one, Callie's story, and was keen to learn more about Dani. She seemed so alone, so scared and yet risked her life to help someone, a stranger, in a similar situation. Her past, her traumas, could have made her a very different person. The mind, the way the brain works, is fascinating, and given we don't use such a large part of it I can believe that talents shown by Callie and Dani could exist. I could see this being real, the different factions, Government depts, not just private mercenaries, looking to profit from someone unusual abilities. That's a scary thought. Who would you trust. Who could you trust. No wonder Dani is so closed off, so self reliant. She's learned she has to be.
Its another good story, connected to the first but complete in itself. I really enjoyed learning more about Dani, she's had such a tough life, but is so kind, so gentle, and so deserving of love. Thankfully we have Marc, one of the Crofton brothers, who sees her for what she is, not just what she can do, and their relationship is perfect, he is determined to protect her from those who just want to use her. Like book one its a bit “insta love” on both sides, but then that does happen. Its something that I find hard to accept in many books, but it works here and feel right. And of course there's dogs again, clever, loving, loyal dogs. I always have insta love for them ….
Stars: Four, another great read, which I read always thinking, this is scarily real, the greed for money, for a weapon – even if that means using a person against their wishes.
Reily Garrett – Mind Stalker Bk 2 – Shadow Guard – Reviewed 1/11/22 – Read 1/4/22
When Dani feels like her current life is at risk, she thinks Marc Crofton can help her disappear.
Dani is hiding in plain sight, concealing psychic abilities from the military and the men that are stalking her. She has tried to help others imprisoned by evil men who are using their abilities for their own personal gain. The last girl her network helped, three men were killed, two right in front of her. She then had to fight off two others that would have killed her.
Marc Crofton had been coming into the veterinary clinic that Dani had been working at with his dogs. Every time he has tried to get her attention and ask her out, but she has slipped past the opportunities until now; she needs to leave, and Marc might be able to get her a fake identification so that she can disappear for good this time.
Join Dani and Marc as they battle the forces out to capture Dani…
What did I like? If you have read any of Reily’s books, you know how exciting and well-written her books are. This one is right up there on the top with the action at top-notch speed.
What will you like? Exciting, harrowing, mysterious, incredible, romantic, animals, and intrigue. While reading this, the exhilaration you will feel will be off the scales; the details and descriptions will draw you into the action, and it doesn’t quit till the last page turns. The characters and animals will have you girls drooling for the guys, and you guys hot for the girls; the animals will have everybody in love with them. Don’t miss this second book, Reily Garrett’s Mind Stalker series, “Shadow Guard,” is available NOW!!!
The mystery and the action continue in this book… ~First, I’ll state that I received this book as a gift from the author to read and review. ~This is a continuation of the bad guys trying to capture both the main character of this story AND the main character of the first story. The Crofton brothers work together to protect each other and the special people that come into their lives. Without giving any spoilers…they are two very special people, with special mental powers. This makes them very desirable to the “bad guys.” Once the girls come under the protection of the Croftons, and all of their ex-special forces team…things take a turn for the better. ~This is a fast-paced action story. There are not a lot of surprises, because most of the villainous people have already been identified and exposed. The plot revolves around protecting the girls and helping them move into a more normal life. ~I really liked the character of Callie from the first book, “Silent Depths” …however, I found Dani not to be quite as engaging. (I am looking forward to seeing how she continues to develop in future books). ~I would definitely recommend reading this book as part of the bigger series.
Author Reily Garrett knows exactly how to capture and contain her audience and Shadow Guard - Mind Stalkers, the second book in this series keeps you wanting to know more with each page. To fully appreciate this book I would highly recommend reading the first story Silent Depths as it really connects everything together. As I said Silent Depths is where we first learn about Daniela our lead female character in Shadow Guard (book 2) and her further exploits with the Think Tank and their hideous involvement with using female prodigies for secretative military involvement. Again love how dogs are quite a pivotal theme to the authors storyline. Great characters with interesting backgrounds and certainly love how loyalty between them is such a strong element. Well written and constructed storyline with a good balance of mystery, slow romance, emotional twists and action. So looking forward to reading the next instalment.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. It's complex and full of surprises. However, there are a few editing problems here that should have been fixed. The book deserves better.
Note to the author @Reily Garrett: Some of the problems are minor, like extra spaces or missed ones, and at least one random line break that shouldn't be there. On page 67 there's a sentence written as "Id you get a ook at im." Really? And on page 120 "They're" has been written as "There're."
Most annoying of all is that Marc's east coast beach front home has large windows supposedly providing views of the sun setting into the ocean. That's quite a trick because the sun _rises_ in the east. In order to see the sun set into the ocean the house would have to be on the west coast. In such a carefully crafted book this mistake is just embarrassing.
Keeping hidden may seem like the best plan, but nothing stays hidden forever. And once revealed, our heroine is going to desperately need some help.
This is book two of the series, but the story is written as a standalone. It does just fine on its own.
This is a romantic suspense story with some paranormal elements. The story is well written, and easy to read with well developed characters and an intriguing setting. There is a lot of action and intrigue in this one, so the story moves at a good pace. I also like both of our lead characters which is always a plus. Overall, a fast moving story that draws you in at the beginning and doesn't let go. I am definitely looking forward to the next book.
Highly recommended

Penny, or Dani is a mind reader. she helped get Calli free only to be put on the table as an alternate
In helping Carri get free Dani put herself on the radar of the men who capture and and imprison girls like them. The special girls with that little extra that makes them become hunted like animals. Calli found Nate. Dani is being claimed by Marc. Both girls need protection and men who are sure enough of themselves to allow the women to be the best they can be. With the help and support of Marc and his friends that have began to guard Dani she is coming out of her shell and learning to use those extra talents she has tried to hide for most of her life.
Wow too good! Dani had psychic abilities and was being Hunted by the military and a stalker when she meets Marc who helps her. This is a non stop roller coaster ride of a book. So demanding in plot, it just grabs you abs never lets go. I love books like that. It was scary, suspenseful and the drama is turned up 10 notches to leave me feeling breathless. I respect this Author and being that is my first book by Reily Garrett, it will not be my last. So good I just loved it!!

Can you imagine reading minds? Dani can, and it's causing serious trouble for her. She seeks out Marc Crofton to help her disappear. He uncovers she's in trouble, and his protective instincts kick in. He doesn't know her secret, but he needs her to trust him. The story is filled with intrigue, murder, and romance. Shadow Guard can be read as a stand-alone, even though it is the second book in the Mind Stalkers series. There are references to the first book, but they are explained. Dani is a strong, intelligent woman who needs the love of a good man, Marc.
The writing was terrible, the manipulation of the main female character was terrible, and in both book 1 & book 2 there's the sick idea of the youngness of the fmc... and the hero, at least in this one, says "if she's legally and adult, who is he to argue?" (Nevermind that the fmcs in both books are supposedly 23, they're written to be much younger.) DNF somewhere around 21% or 24%.
Oh, and the author likes to throw in "big words" to prove how well-rounded they, or their characters, are.
This is the second book in this series and is every bit as good as Bending Fate. Dani - Penny in Bending Fate - is running for her life and working at a vet’s where she meets Marc. What follows is a race for not only her life but also Callie’s. It is an exciting book full of interesting insights into the special gifts of the girls. The dogs play an important role in the story along with Marc’s brothers and former special forces colleagues. An enjoyable read.
This is the second book of Mind Stalkers. I suggest reading Silent Depths #1 first Dani aka Penny needs a new identity after helping Callie escape the Think Tank. The only person she feels could help her is Marc, a PI. Together with Marc's brothers and the team they try to unravel the mystery of who the serial killer and stalker is. I loved Lightening and the teams personalities and banter. Can't wait for next installment Whispers After Death #3! Conner and Kendra's story!
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Dani is doing her best to hide in plain sight trying to conceal her psychic abilities while being hunted by the military and the men stalking her. Marc meets Dani while bringing his dogs to the vet clinic that Dani is working at. He wants to as her out but she needs his help to run, can he help to keep her safe? Fast-paced read with lots of drama, suspense and steam. Great characters, lots of twists and turns and a fast-paced entertaining story. I loved it!
This is the 2nd book in the Mind Stalkers series and it doesn't lack anything. It is a great psychic action thriller. The characters are strong and believable. This is Dani and Marc's story. Their attraction is off the charts as is their chemistry. There is danger, suspense, romance, and intrigue all through out the book. . I am really enjoying this series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Marc is fascinated by his vet's assistant, Dani but other than being kind she doesn't seem interested. He's been working on her for months and she finally lets him in when she needs his help. Marc finds that she is the mysterious Penny who arranged Callie's escape. With Marc and a team from the Colonel and Nate with his team and brothers they capture Ray, his men and the Tucker's and put an end to the biggest danger to Callie and Dani.
Dani’s character is so complex but is quite fun to see in action. The clever woman conceals her abilities to keep herself safe, but what I thought was fun was how she ends up developing feelings for Marc and vice versa. She really is the spitfire that he calls her but they make a great pairing.

Shadow Guard is the second book in the Mind Stalkers series and is a great psychic action thriller. The characters are strong and relatable. The story engaged my interest from start to finish with danger, suspense, romance, and intrigue. I am really enjoying this series.

I liked Dani, aka Penny from the last book. She had so many different people after her for different reasons, I am surprised she stayed free and alive as long as she did. A strong, capable woman. I adore how they all have dogs. Lovely dogs. How fun. A nice mix of action, tension, romance, dogs, family, and friendship. Enjoyed this. Looking forward to what I will find in the next story.
this was the perfect blend of paranormal and thriller genre, the characters were great and I enjoyed how they worked well as a genre. The storyline had me hooked from the beginning.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Excellent story with both strong and believable characters. I found the storyline to be straightforward with only a few unexpected twists. There is more here for sure. If you like action and adventure this is for you.
This book has a well told story line. I like how the characters evolved during their relationship. Marc and Dani learn to trust each other as they hunt the bad guys. This series is very good and keeps me looking for the next book in the series.
This story has all the good stuff! There's action, romance and humor, along with paranormal talents for extra intrigue. Clever characters tie it all together. Highly recommend this author and all of her series.
Fast paced story as a psychic fights for her life with a strong man beside her. With dogs adding interesting insights this book captures your mind and makes the time fly
