Jeff Smith, creatorul seriei Bone
Kazu Kibuishi (born 1978) is an American graphic novel author and illustrator. He is best known for being the creator and editor of the comic anthology Flight and for creating the webcomic Copper. He has also written (drawn) the Amulet series. The webcomic artist and noted critic Scott McCloud has said that some of Kazu Kibuishi's work is so beautifully drawn that "it hurts my hands when I look at it".
Not only is this issue filled with Kazu Kibuishi's outstanding art, not only does it continue the awesomely creative world building of Amulet, but also it starts to add a much needed layer of depth to the characters.
I'm now excited to see what Trelis and Luger's relationship is to the Elf King. I want to learn what the Elf King's plans for Emily. And even the origin of the stone is starting to seem like it'll be more than just a One Ring ripoff from The Lord of the Rings.
This was my favorite volume yet! (I think I say that after each one :-P) Such incredible, fantastical, unique, BEAUTIFUL story & art! & WYVERNS, guys!!! WYVERNS! EVIL ELVES! AIR SHIPS! A MAGICAL FLOATING CITY IN THE SKY! Also we finally get a look at the... erm... super creepy looking... thing... in Emily’s amulet (don’t wanna spoil anything so i’ll leave it at that), which was a super satisfying reveal! Just an ominous voice no more! We have an ominous ‘face’ to go with the ominous voice!
Sometimes dark & magical; sometimes whimsical; always fantastical! I really loved the events of this volume- the good, the bad, & the ugly! the emotional stuff the new [tentative] friendships the growing & maturing of Emily & Navin as the story progresses... the more that unfolds, the more invested I become.
And seriously Hayao Miyazaki fans... THIS. IS. FOR. YOU. The art is so similar and gives me such a similar feeling of wonder. The storyline as well.
All in all- SOLID VOLUME! Exceeded expectations, even, to say the least! Cannot WAIT to see what comes next! This series is so addicting; when I’m reading I am absolutely glued to the pages and my brain goes into overdrive & I end up reading it too fast! I want to savor it more!
[ Let’s be real for a moment, here, though... when it comes to patience & taking my time... not my strong suit. I tend to devour things; instant gratification always wins. ]
I only have read the first three volumes of this series thus far, and it has already carved a permanent little home in my heart & gotten all cozy there. Like, its taken it upon itself to have a designated drawer at my place, already, level of cozy 😝😂😂.
This is definitely up there in my favorite graphic novel series’ top 5. In fact I think it may lie in my graphic novel favorites list but one slot below the brilliance that is Monstress, by Marjorie Liu! Which just fyi is a LOT more mature/A LOT darker than this, definitely upper end of ya/new adult & older*, so its almost difficult to mention them side by side (but yet I have! Breakin’ unwritten rules like a boss!); This one, Amulet, is definitely lower end of YA/ middle grade, but all ages, honestly. I also think it would be appealing to a larger audience- fantasy fans everywhere!
You need to check this series out NOW, fantasy lovers, portal magic lovers and or Studio Ghibli lovers/ fans especially!!!! Even those of you who haven’t given this medium a try yet- it’s def a great intro series! It’s truly a treat I feel lucky to have found!
*[ DEFINITELY give Monstress a try as well; it is a teeny bit more niche? The art is steampunk mixed with asian mythology & may appeal more to an audience who already reads/ appreciates graphic novels, but definitely to anyone who loves some great, gritty, more... explicit? & complex fantasy (it has some parallel themes with Amulet, too, just way more maturely executed/ stylistically very different)]
So in this book, the gang are out to find the city of Cielis where the old Guardian Council's Stonekeepers supposedly live... in a fortress in the sky. They have hidden themselves from the evil Elf King but Emily and the gang need information to see if they can help them stop his evilness.
So they have to go into town, into a bar, to find a ship that will take them there from a map they found from Emily's great grandfather.
Three friends walk into a bar... sorry.. I couldn't help it :-)
They do end up talking some men into taking them in their ship but before they go, the elf prince Trellis and friend have followed them to the bar. But.... Trellis father has sent guards after him to drag him back or kill him.... see he's a jerk father! But Emily decides to take pity on him and become a friend of sorts.
Sooo.. after taking care of those jerks, the gang including Trellis and his friend hurry to board the ship and get under way.
They get into some trouble a long the way with things trying to kill them in the clouds and other stuff. Trellis and Emily have a heart to heart so to speak and they learn some things about each other. He's a pretty good guy, in this book at any rate.
They end up losing some friends in this book that I really hope they get back in the next book because I love them and we don't see them get killed or anything. They just get taken.
They end up at their destination, but something seems.... off...
Now I have to wait until the library gets the next book or someone decides to buy the whole series for me including book 7 that comes out in February :-) I am definitely getting these, they are awesome, graphics, story, everything!
3.5 stars Cool. what a great volume! I love the series so far it's fun, fast paced, interesting and very engaging; but what I love most, is the art; it's incredible! It gives me such a great satisfaction when Em is using the stone's power; I want see her get more control over it and become unstoppable! I believe the mom needs to leave she adds nothing to the series she bores me.. Trellis -- new fave! There is still a lot of mystery around the air. Let's see what's going to happen next.
I remember this one being my favourite but that’s also because I don’t really remember the rest after lol, so we’ll have to see once I’m done. Each book gets better and better. Amazing art like always and we continue to get more information about the history of their world. One thing I definitely forgot, was how the author continued to write Lugers character and I love him. He’s so sweet and I’m so happy he became part of the crew. Emily becomes stronger with each book, and she was definitely one of the first strong female lead character that I remember reading about. On to the next!
This volume saw a lot more backstory being revealed about the elf king and a certain plot twist regarding Trellis, which should be interesting to see how it all plays out. Emily herself grapples a lot more with the 'dark side' to her stone, and the being that lurks beneath the surface.
Overall, not much has changed from the previous volumes to this one. The plot is still incredibly fast-moving, and the art is as detailed as ever, improving if anything. Everything is high-stakes and dramatic, which really only adds to the "ASDLASLKLSDKALK I NEED THE NEXT ONE" feeling you get at the end.
Really fast paced and quite fun, but like the first two volumes there was no depth or originality to the story and everything was rather contrived and convenient. Also, the main character (Emily) wasn't very endearing.
Loved the artwork, it was done really well. The plot was somewhat enjoyable, the mystery/search for Cielis and finding out the background/history of the elves and Alledia was fairly interesting. Really liked the world and most of the secondary characters. Didn't much like Emily, even when she was going all DarkEmily and struggling with her powers, she still came across as bland.
What's with the random animal curse? Why is everyone okay with it? Why is Emily's mum so cool with all the craziness around her? Why does she let Emily run into danger? Why are the kids in charge of everything?
The group is out to find the lost city of Ceilis, the city according to the legends is hidden somewhere in the sky, behind the clouds. Finding the city isn't the only problem that the group have to deal with.
The story evolves fast and the art simply beautiful
Emily and Navin are back in this and their mother is alive and well. They are looking for the lost city of Cielis, some believe that it still exists and others believe that it was lost long ago. Cielis was the city of the guardian council which is believed to have been burnt by the elf king. They get to a town where they are looking for an airship that can take them to Cielis but not many people believe in it's existence so not many takers.
At the same time, elf king's son Trellis and another Elf Luger go to the same spot and elf king's hunters have hunted Trellis and Luger there. Emily helps Trellis and Luger and they all leave to Cielis. Elf king has sent another assassin that has never failed a mission.
Emily, Navin, their mother, Miskit, Leon, Cogsley, captain and his crew, Trellis and Luger all make it to a place that's a beacon for the city of Cielis itself. The assassin has followed them there but Emily defeats him and they are welcomed by few strangers who announce that they are from Cielis to take them there.
It was an interesting follow up. It was action-packed with amazing art and I liked all the characters except for the mother. Some revelations are made and I can't wait to read the next in the series.
A weaker volume, it feels like a rip-off of Castle in the Sky where our crew heads out to find a hidden floating castle with some trouble on the way. The characters are are still great and continue to get developed.
Also won't be an issue for younger readers, but the hidden city is called Cielis the whole time I'm reading it as Cialis. And a prominent character's name is Silas. I feel like efforts could have been made to create more unique sounding names.
Another naming thing, on the southern region of the map shown on the back page there's an area called Coconino Valley. I just so happened to be reading the classic Krazy Kat comic strip on the same evening, set in Coconino County. I wonder if its an intentional reference.
One issue I had was when the human characters are all shown on the same page they have the same round mouth and dumb expressions. It's a bit distracting. I'm glad the book has lots of different character designs, I'd worry what it'd look like if Kibuishi tried drawing a book of just humans.
Even though I didn't love this installment as much as the previous two, I'm still a huge fan of this comic book series! This one had some random developments out of nowhere, with things happening seemingly "just because" (which then got resolved just as quickly), and this is why I'm rating it a bit lower, but I love this group of characters and all in on their future adventures. Looking forward to the next one!
I loved the graphics in this one and the great imagination of Kibuishi! The characters are so well-written and the action so exciting. My kid wouldn't let me put him in bed until we finished the whole story. And then he was already impatient for the next volume! Breathlessly fun!
Ohh man! This has such an 'The Edge Chronicles' (aka : The Curse of the Gloamglozer ) feel to it that it really made me adore this. This series is proving to have a lot to offer and I'm grabbing all it will give me.
This was a really good volume. I’m glad that we got more of Prince Trellis and Luger in this volume as they’ve quickly become some of my favorite characters. Navin being able to show his flying skills and Cogsley being a mechanical genius were great moments in the book. If I’m honest though this volume has moments where characters seemed to be doing nothing meaningful to the plot. They cleaned, waited around, did a chore or screamed about something and that was it for the entire volume. I get not everyone can have “staring role” moments always but there have to be some moments showcasing why they’re needed for other characters or the plot overall. It just didn’t feel that way this volume. The author even sent some characters away this volume because of this issue. I look forward to continuing the series especially after finding out two reveals near the end.
Once again, a fun, exciting installment in the Amulet series. The art in these books is just phenomenal. That's probably my favorite thing about them, along with the ragtag cast of characters.
I really like how the story is developing and growing, however I felt like a lot of things popped up out of nowhere or where very convenient for the plot. I'll concede because it is a children's story.
And unlike the last volume, there were some sadder elements to this one (and some disappearance of characters that I loved! Hopefully they show up soon). Generally, this is a fun, quick read that I would LOVE to see as a TV show because Kibuishi does excellent artwork.
Kazu seems to have a different mode of transportation for each book. This one is by air. The crew is looking for the secret city of Cielis. These books do go fast. There is also a bounty hunter in this book.
There is a bit of a cliff hanger in this book and it's not the end.
The imagination in the book is some amazing world creating. I enjoy the artwork with its bold visuals. I find this series to be fun and engaging. A well told story with pictures.
I am hooked on this series and I look forward to reading more.
As always this was super beautiful and very fun to read. I always enjoy these graphic novels and I just find them so fun. I will say that the Mom character does really irritate me in this series becuase she seems so naive and silly, but it is a kids story so I guess it is aimed at younger readers than me.
The art and story of this one generally were a lot of fun and I will certainly pick up the next volume at some point. 3.5*s :) Especially recommended for children :D
