Geertrui Mieke De Ketelaere is Program Director AI at imec (Belgium). She holds a master degree in civil and industrial engineering and specialised in robotics and artificial intelligence during her studies. Over the last 25 years, she has worked for several multinationals on all aspects of data and analytics (IBM, Microsoft, SAP, SAS, etc). At imec, Mieke De Ketelaere is responsible for the development of the AI strategy and roll-out. From a consulting point of view, she is specialised in defining the AI business canvas, from potential value to predefined risks. With her understanding of the new digital data streams and her understanding of AI technologies, Mieke De Ketelaere is requested by different business schools as a guest speaker on digitisation. In her public presentations, Mieke puts the focus on the demystification of the hype around AI and covers non-technical subjects such as data privacy. In 2018, she was nominated “ICT Woman of the Year” in Belgium.

A book aiming to remove the 'black box' that AI & data science appears to be for the general population while emphasizing the importance of human-AI translators - instead of AI specialists, rather AI generalists who can connect AI-related technologies to the real-world use cases. This is written though a human-centred AI approach, with the AI always human-oriented aka helping optimize OUR lives & automate tasks. Whether we realize it or not, AI is all around us today. It is what we typically call Artificial Narrow Intelligence, but it is AI nonetheless & its capabilities are far-reaching, so this book couldn't have come at a better time.

The book is appropriately split into 6 parts: Algorithms, Data, Hardware (the 3 building blocks of AI), Automated Decisioning, Ethical AI and Conclusions (next steps). I love how each of the 6 chapters ends with a few interviews with leaders in the field and there is also a nerd index with additional, more in-depth knowledge sprinkled throughout every section.

An incredibly useful book for novices, but also worth the read for those already in the field such as myself. It is always refreshing to hear the views of others and learn some new nuggets of knowledge along the way.

In Wanted: Human-AI Translators: Artificial Intelligence Demystified pleit Geertrui Mieke De Ketelaere, specialist in artificiële intelligentie (ai) bij het Vlaamse onderzoekscentrum IMEC, voor de inzet van ‘ai-vertalers’. Volgens De Ketelaere is er te weinig aandacht voor de sociale aspecten van ai, dat zij pragmatisch definieert als ‘computer systems that learn, make decisions and carry them out independently’. Juist omdat ai onder bepaalde omstandigheden van grote meerwaarde kan zijn voor de samenleving en de economische waarde verdere investeringen zal stimuleren, is het haars inziens zaak om beter na te denken over de implicaties van ai. In Europa is een goede stap gezet met het beschermen van persoonsgegevens, maar het is slechts een begin: mensen met kennis van techniek én ethiek moeten het grote publiek helpen om de betekenis van ai beter te begrijpen.

AI may be very different from us, but it is also profoundly similar. AI relies on an analysis of human intelligence, such as neural networks mimicking how our brains work. AI also carries the worst traits of human beings, by taking over and automating our biases, sometimes giving them even greater weight.

Ook waarschuwt De Ketelaere dat ai de mens vooralsnog niet overbodig maakt: onder verwijzing naar de paradox van Moravec dat wat eenvoudig is voor mensen moeilijk is voor ai en andersom, legt zij uit dat ai bv. geen goed onderscheid kan maken tussen causaal verband en correlatie. Dat brengt De Ketelaere tot de conclusie dat we kinderen niet moeten opleiden tot slechte versies van ai en daarom sociale vaardigheden in plaats van zuiver cognitieve kennis moeten bijbrengen.

Contemporary AI methods rely mainly on learning from examples or experience. Perhaps it is time for our children to explore the world again in a playful way and learn from experience, so that they can learn more independently from their successes and setbacks?

Ten slotte wijdt De Ketelaere uit over een paar onderwerpen waaraan de meeste schrijvers voorbijgaan, zoals het zorgwekkende energieverbruik van ai, de intelligentie van dieren en planten en onze culturele opvattingen van ai, die gevoed worden door films als The Terminator . In plaats daarvan verwijst de schrijver liever naar I, Robot van Isaac Asimov, die in de literatuur de aanstalte maakte om geboden op te stellen voor ai. De Ketelaere borduurt daarop voort. Daarmee is ze niet de eerste, maar haar geboden zijn scherper verwoord dan bv. de beginselen die de OESO in 2019 publiceerde.

1. Bescherm fundamentele mensenrechten en beperk menselijke autonomie niet.
2. Garandeer de robuustheid en veiligheid van ai-systemen en bouw mechanismen in om fouten in inconsistenties te verwijderen.
3. Garandeer de bescherming van persoonsgegevens en houd de controle over gegevens in handen van burgers.
4. Wees open en navolgbaar.
5. Geef altijd prioriteit aan diversiteit, non-discriminatie en eerlijkheid en neem menselijke behoeften en talent in acht.
6. Vergroot het sociale welzijn en dat van het milieu en draag op een positieve manier bij aan verandering.
7. Bouw mechanismen in voor de verantwoordelijkheid en aansprakelijkheid voor ai-systemen.

Al met al is Wanted: Human-AI Translators: Artificial Intelligence Demystified een prettig boek over het belang en de toepassing en gevaren van ai. Niets dat men nergens anders hoort, maar goed en duidelijk verwoord.
Een lezerstip: specifiek voor het onderwijs was ik zeer te spreken over Should Robots Replace Teachers? van Neil Selwyn.
