Sacrifices—that’s what females make to live in Serendee—an urban utopia. We give up our family, our choices, our bodies.

Some people call it a cult, but they don’t understand. We give it our all, and in return, Serendee gives back by providing a safe, idyllic home.

Starting with The Order, a marriage arranged by the leader of Serendee to the male of his choice.

I don’t expect the perfect mate, but when I’m matched with Rex—the rebellious, handsome, and destructive heir of Serendee, I’m stunned.

Until I find out why I’ve been chosen.

Rex doesn’t want me, but his father will do anything to keep his son in line, including having his three best friend’s train me to be the perfect mate, in and out of bed.

Elon, Silas, and Levi will test my beliefs, my faith, and every ounce of loyalty I have to Serendee.

What I don’t understand is that Rex’s goal is to break free.

But first, he’ll have to break me to make it happen.

The Order, book 1 of the Cult of Serendee, is a contemporary, dark reverse harem romance, by USA Today and Amazon best selling author, Angel Lawson.

The idea for this book is great, the execution not so much.

If you don’t think too hard about it, this book makes sense and it’s even good. But the moment you start questioning characters’ motivations, this books becomes a house of cars.

The part about the Cult was interesting. I liked how the story slowly unravels the nightmare that these places truly are, and how the victims rationalize and normalize their situation. This was arguably the best part of the book.

I understand Angel Lawson has a thing for naïve, virginal, innocent girls being defiled and abused by more experienced men. But Imogene has to be one of the most bland FMC I’ve ever read. The only thing passing as her personality was her obsession with The Way, the creepy ’way of life’ the Cult she lives in uses to rule its people into submission.

She was willing to do anything for The Way, even go against everything she believed in. Even when she discovered her Leader Anex doing things that contradicted what she believed to be The Way, she never questioned him or their reality. There were so many instances for her to finally realize the truth. And when she finally did, it was terribly anticlimactic.

All the talk about her ingest of calories in general made me very uncomfortable. I don’t think Lawson understands that having a FMC starving herself in the name of enlightenment and the Hs making her eat so she becomes hotter isn’t the hot take she thought it was.

Something that bothered me greatly was how Imogene had no idea about the real world, had never watched TV or went outside, she didn’t even know what a penis was ffs. But she saw marijuana plants and instantly knew it was illegal and wrong. I just hate inconsistencies like this.

I’m rating this low because her “mate” Rex, Anex’s son, raped her. And went as far as to say he did it as a kindness to her, to help her. Worst of all, right after l, she still wanted to make things work with him for the Cult.

The only saving Grace in this book was Silas, for whom I felt really sympathetic. He’s basically Anex’s whore, pimping himself out to rich women to convince them to join the cult and donate all their money. He’s trapped in this position, which Anex trained him for since he was 16. Let that sink in.

He was always sweet and considerate to the FMC, he still manipulated her into what Anex wanted but at least he didn’t hurt her. That’s how low the bar is in this book.

Levi’s whole personality was The Way and Apparently I Like to Inflict Pain. He sounds a delight, right? It was kind of interesting to see the juxtaposition between Levi being sexually inexperienced and his Dom tendencies, but it ultimately felt flat because of his lack of human emotions and how he didn’t care he used too much force to spank Imogene and left her bruised and needing help from the other guys. Talk about a 50 Shades walking red flag.

Elon kind of bored me with his internal conflict because he didn’t want to want Imogene as much as he did. Whatever dude 🙄 He assaulted her in their first scene together, but at least he became better as the book progressed and not worse. A small mercy in all this clusterfuck.

I believe this is a duology and I have to admit I’m curious to see if they destroy the Cult from the inside.

It's quite concerning when you start to believe that the man trying to LEAVE the cult is the problem. Turns out he was never the problem... the cult was. I know it's shocking to everyone 😅 The author knew what she was doing sucking me into this story and indoctrinating me just like these people were.

I didn't even notice it was happening until sh1t started to hit the fan and I started to think… ‘oh this may be a bad place’.

This RH was based around a community(a cult) of people, who resided in Serendee and followed The Way. The lifestyle was reminiscent of family dynamics in the 60s. There was no technology and women had a certain role to play.

The FMC was extremely naive, as she had been kept in this bubble and grew up solely taught how to be the perfect ‘mate’. In her inner monologues, you hear how dedicated she was to this belief system. She would describe how women are allowed jobs, which showed that they were a progressive community, but at the same time, stereotypical gender roles just made the ‘most sense’. She seemed to be so convinced of what she was saying that she never saw that she was contradicting herself.

I really liked this FMC. She questioned a lot of things and wasn't shy to put herself out there to gain a greater understanding of something. Her confidence definitely grew as the book went on.

I'm trying not to give too much away, but at 18 all young women go through The Order. They are matched with another man from the community, who becomes their partner/mate. She was matched with Rex and let's just say he wasn't super happy about it. This is explained in the blurb, so I'm not giving too much away 😅

Due to Rex’s love of ‘sins of the outside world’, his father (the head of the cult) proposes that Rex’s friends assist in ‘teaching’ Imogene (FMC) how to be a perfect partner to Rex. You get what I mean by ‘teaching’.

Elon, Levi & Silas were the friends in this situation. These 3 friends brought different things to this relationship. Elon was the protector/ enforcer, Levi was the religious guide and Silas was the tender educator. Rex was mostly described as misguided and rebellious, when in actuality he knew too many secrets about this place. I did see him as the problem, as he was constantly portrayed this way and his behaviour had a lot of emotional fall-back on his friends.

If you are not a fan of cheating, it is slightly referenced. It is frequently mentioned that the main MMC is with OW, but he and the FMC aren't in a relationship, so it's a grey area.

Not going to lie, I’m not familiar with the inner workings of a cult, but after reading this I definitely feel more educated 😅😂

I will say I only dropped a star, due to the dubcon. This was clearly outlined in the trigger warning, so it wasn't the fact that it was featured. It was more so the lack of clarity of what it was classified as. It was firstly described as forceful, then as non-con by the FMC and then it was generally accepted as just being rough, but not the ‘r’ word.

The severity of it seemed to keep changing and it got pretty confusing. I guess I may have misinterpreted it wrong though. I just needed clarity of who I needed to hate or if I didn't need to hate anyone.

Overall I did really enjoy this book. It was an extremely unique plot (that I'm unfamiliar with) and definitely grabbed every bit of my attention.

Also, that cover is scary!!! It's those eyes.

Since the authors won’t do it I will

One of the potential love interests r@p3s her & says it’s a kindness to spare her form whatever his father will do to her. & the FMC is still attracted to him. I will not be reading the next book.

This is not your typical Angel Lawson book. It is not as dark as Lords, but it is definitely dark and has trigger warnings for a reason. If you are not okay with dub con, abuse, and coercion, this book is not for you. That being said, Silas is MINE. I saw him first, licked him, and tied him up in the closet. I am keeping him. The end. Imogene has spent her whole life in Serendee. She doesn't know life outside of the boundaries and has been sheltered and indoctrinated into the beliefs of that community. She doesn't know that there is a dark underbelly beneath what the leader Anex is selling to people. After her mother, one of the founding members, leaves Imogene is treated differently. This is when she crosses path with Rex, Elon, Silas, and Levi. Rex is broken on so many levels. To him, nothing can fix Serendee and in turn is out to break everything in his path. Including Imogene. I love how strong she is though. She goes through so much and eventually learns to stand on her own feet. Elon is a tough one to love, but he wiggles his way into your heart. Silas has my heart, and Levi is the moral compass of the group. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Nah, not for me

The description is like the book... it's not what I'd call entertainment. 2 stars because it's not horribly written just not a good book. There's no way the men in this book are salvageable in anyway yet the book tries to make them "complicated" vs just the POS they are.

When I say I could not put this book down, I’m not kidding. I didn’t check my phone, didn’t care that I had work in a few hours, I needed to finish this book. I already know this book will be a favorite of mine.

I have not read many books following cults. I found it super interesting to read from the perspective of people who are deep within the cult and seeing them deal with their different struggles. Imogene was the perfect FMC, she wanted to be the perfect member of this group that she fully believes in. She is willing to do whatever it takes to follow The Way which leads her to the four men who will change everything for her.

I loved that each of the men has different struggles within Serendee. They all have roles to play and they all have varying lines they’re willing to cross. They are all at different steps of how they feel about Serendee after learning the darker secrets including Imogene which I found fascinating.

This is a dark read. Not as dark as the lord series but it’s not for the faint of heart. The trigger warning are at the beginning of the book so be sure to read those before starting.

The Order is a unique and different read that I had me intrigued from the start. The Order is a privilege to be a part of and when you pledge your loyalty to Anex you will reap all of the rewards. At least that's what everyone has been taught. No one is more inclined to serve The Way than Imogene. She has lived word for word by everything she is taught, but when she is given a second chance was ordered to a person she couldn't imagine she begins to question things. This book is intriguing and full of web of lies. Once I started I needed to know more, I had to know more about Levi, Silas and Elon. Three faithful guys to Rex, but their loyalty begins to shift when Imogen becomes part of the Chosen. I cannot wait to find out what happens next. This book is one of a kind and it had me at the edge of my seat.

Managed to get to the end and HATED it....wish I didn't read it. UGH!

So...Chapter 34...WTF?! This scene is so messed up. I was really liking the book even though it was really odd...it was still good and the guys treated her respectfully. The supposed mate she is supposed to end up with is the biggest spoiled psycho around and I am not sure how this author can make him even the slightest likable in the future...

Made it through to the end of this...since I like the rest of the guys and just NO!

The plot of this dark romance is definitely not like anything I have read before. Maybe a bit similar to some of the dark romance about secret societies but this is about a cult.

plot:
Imogene turns 19 and the leader of the cult she grew up in assigns her mate. Rex, her mate, is the heir to the cult. She lives by the doctrine and wants to be everything she is supposed to. But Rex is the one person who wants out. His father wants to do everything he can to keep him trapped in this life, including giving him the mate that will keep him in their community. So he asks Rex's three best friends (Silas, Levi, and Elon) to train her to be the perfect spiritual mate for Rex.

Writing:
The writing is fast paced and easy to read. Medium burn spice. The psychology of this type of life is wild to me so I was super captivated. Angel Lawson clearly did her research. But DARK themes so please check TW. But not as dark as the Lords series. There were a few editing errors but honestly, I barely noticed.

Tropes: why choose, dark, forced prox.
TW: dub-con, non-con, SA, , self-harm, knife and blood play, eating/food control, trafficking, drug use/sales, cult behavior

This book is a captivating and dark read that explores the unsettling reality of cults. The story flows seamlessly, slowly unraveling the nightmare these places truly are. While the FMC, Imogene, may have seemed somewhat bland, her obsession with The Way and her willingness to do anything for it make for a fascinating perspective. The different struggles of the characters within Serendee add depth to the narrative, and the book keeps you hooked from the very beginning until the end. This is a dark read, not for the faint of heart, with trigger warnings at the beginning. A must-read for those intrigued by cults and dark romances.

I had no clue what I was getting myself into with this one. Triggers for freaking days lol which really isn’t a surprise with Angel. Just check TWs before reading.

I got heated at times reading this. The plot is good, the cult structure is impressively thought out and explained. There are questions at times but it has more to do with a characters motives. What got me is of course the way men are revered and thought to not being able to help acting on their urges. While women are ment to stay covered, quite and be a warm hole for their “mate”. Ugh I hate that term in this book lol.

Imogene is the daughter of a regressive, so she is tainted her whole life. We don’t know why her mother left the cult, but that she did and her mate and daughter were outcasted. Now it’s time for her to be mated. And none other than the leaders son is who was chosen for her.

Rex is vile, mean, abusive and freaking pretty (of course 😒). Usually I’d like him anyway, but I really don’t. Granted we don’t get a whole lot of him in book one, until the end. He hates his father and thinks their enlightenment is total BS. Though he is right, everyone that grew up in their world doesn’t know any better. He does, yet he acts like a petulant child and treats Imogene like less than dog shit.

Elon is mean and brutal…also pretty he is Rex’s bff and guard. Silas is the pretty one, who Rex’s father whores out to bring new people into their cult. Levi the most devout is quite and clever. He works most closely with Rex’s dad but not sure what his exact job is. They’ve all the Rex get away with everything, until Imogene is thrown into their games.

Rex’s friends may be freaking idiots the way they first treat her, but they all quickly learn there is so much more to Imogene. The 3 start to fall for her. But they are there to “train” her to be the best mate for Rex.

Rex’s father wants him to fail so he can have her. These guys are predators, end of. They may get redeemed but I honestly don’t really like the guys a whole lot. I want Imogene to grow and evolve. And to bring these bastards to their knees. Though this was hard to read at time I really am hooked on this story and can not wait to see what Imogene does.

4.5⭐️ Rex can go fuck himself 👊💥suck on this you motherfucking rapist 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕

This girl was born in a cult and her kind of arranged marriage more so her spiritual mate you know it just some real fucked up shit is to Rex, the son of the leader of the cult. Rex actually chose her because he thought that she could understand what it was like to lose faith because her mother ran away from the cult a while ago. So now they’re engaged she wants be marriage and clean the house and stuff but he don’t want nothing to do with her so he leaves to live somewhere else while she stays in the house. Rex also has his friends who are in the cult that life in the house so the leader of the cult Aka the father tells the three friend to train her to be the perfect wife/ lover 😏 so you know what that means 😏 *wink

I really like reading about the three guys and her relationship because this bitch didn’t even know what a cock was 😱😱😱

So that happens then all the sudden in come Rex and be rapes her because she is so desperate to get him to be her mate that she tries and tries to spend time with him, he takes advantage of that and takes are virginity “ruining her in the eyes of god” then drops another bomb my saying “It’s been nice but I’m leave good luck with my dad‘s wrath” ✌️🙋‍♂️ and so his friends are like “now hold up what fuck man you know your dad’s going kill us and probably try to rape her” and he’s like “mhmm yes I know you can join me if you want, all of you can even her” *the girl that you just rape, yeah fat chance*

The guys were able to get it through his thick skull that they would all die if he just left like he’d be leaving them to be doomed so last minute he comes back and marries her and like right when they’re walking down to get married she looked in to the leader dude and realizes that she made a huge mistake……😱😱😱😱😱😱

Oh and he was able to make up a whole excuse as to why he raped her saying that he was trying get it through to her that the cult is a fraud and that the whole thing was fake. Like oh yeah that makes so much sense that your first idea to reaching this goal is by raping her🧍🏻‍♀️

I wish it was possible to give this book 0 stars.
First and foremost, the author’s list of triggers is minimal and lacking as well as minimizing the severity of the triggering content.
Rex assaults Imogene. Twice. And now he’s being redeemed because his father is worse?
He literally raped her. She said no, she told him to stop it was not dub consent it was rape. Unforgivable.
Additional triggers not mentioned are disordered eating, brainwashing, rape, physical abuse, and religious trauma.
Worst book I’ve read all year.

Dnf 50%. This has got to be one of the most annoying FMCs. And the MMCs aren't much better. The narration isn't great either as she sounds like a middle schooler.

I'm still processing everything I just read because holy moly this was a wild ride. Usually when I read a book about cults, it's someone getting sucked into the cult, or trying to prove something is a cult, you know? It's never people actually IN the thick of it and realizing that maybe their beliefs are not what they seem.

Imogene was the perfect heroine for this kind of storyline. Naïve without meaning to be, devout, tender, and honest, all she wanted to do was what was asked of her, what she believed was in the best interest for her leader and for the rest of her community in Serendee, but holy moly, watching everything she thought she believed be tested? And then realizing that just in how you phrase something, it can make the act seem okay? Wow, this was so incredibly well done and I don't know whether I want to applaud Angel Lawson or peek into her brain and start asking her a lot of questions. Maybe a little of both.

Elon, Levi, and Silas? Angels. All three of them. All broken in their own way, all doing their best, and all falling for this Little Lamb without even meaning to, and UGH I loved it.

Rex? I get it. I get him. I don't love him, but I know I will. That's what's important.

This book was deep without feeling that way, it was detailed without dragging you down, and it was a lot of information but it felt organic. It was also incredibly dark, far steamier than I anticipated (but I should have known, this is not my first rodeo with Angel), and just completely unexpected. I was enraptured from start to finish. And I can't wait to read what comes next. Angel blew me away with this one (I'm also a little alarmed) and ughhhhhhh this wait for book 2 is going to hurt.

TW: self harm, dubcon, noncon, body dysmorphia, eating habits, abuse

Decent writing & plot // terrible characters

The writing itself wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t able to find any of the characters likable at all. Through the progression of the story, we get into the details of the cult and how it has warped every character… But the characters don’t develop any from the beginning of the book and they continually make choices that make them actively dislikable.

The fmc is unable to separate herself from the cult mentality even after being exposed to much of outside society, having the uglier side of things revealed to her, and having her boundaries pushed by contradictions. From the beginning of the book all-the-way until the end she allows herself to be pushed around.

Rex, the fmc’s “betrothed” resents the cult-life while indulging in sex with random women in bars and various mundane aspects of outer society. At the same time, his three closest friends and the fmc bare the punishment for all of the responsibility of his “infractions”. Some of the things he does later in the plot could be overlooked if he was not portrayed as a spoiled, manipulative, selfish, and immature adult-child.

Silas, Levi, and Elon (Rex’s three friends) have some redeeming qualities. Out of the three, Silas is the closest to being a likable character but only because he is relatively gentle and kind towards the fmc. Levi and Elon, however are so thoroughly indoctrinated into the cult beliefs that they prioritize that over the fmc.

The story itself could improve in the following books, at least I’m hoping so… But this first book didn’t live up to expectations, and that’s in-no-way impacted by the dark subject matter.

all the culty goodness you didn’t know you wanted

I’ve followed Angel Lawson for a long time. I read a couple series by her and LOVED them.
But then she teamed up with Samantha Rue and things got… Dark. Delicious. Dangerous. The Boys of Preston Prep had my attention.
And just when I thought they hadn’t heard my cries for RH, the Lords stormed into our lives and I was forever bound to the authors that delivered wicked and deviant things to my Kindle.
Whether Angel has a co-writer or she writes solo, she’s a phenomenal story teller. This new book… it will grip you and it won’t let go.

“I stare up at this demon of a man—this hateful, terrible man, and know that he has ruined my life. Ruined me.”
— The Order: The Cult of Serendee by Angel Lawson

You know who I want to hate? All the men. All of them.
I love Imogene and my heart broke for her dealing with everything she thought she knew and new challenges being forced upon her repeatedly.
You know who else I love?
Elon. Silas. Levi. And there’s just a bit left over for the spoiled, gluttonous Rex.
I don’t always live the virgin trope, but you can bet Angel Lawson takes us, and our FMC, on a journey that tests our limits. She is an expert at pulling emotions from your chest, sometimes she doesn’t even stomp all of over them. (Sorry, sometimes she does though, and I love her even more for that.)
I recommend this if Lords was too much. I recommend this if Lords was just right. I recommend this if you like any sort of dark romance or are obsessed with cults.
I recommend this if you’re a living, breathing reader.

Phenomenal book, Angel Lawson. I’m waiting impatiently for Regressive and all the chaos these characters will cause in my heart.

Outsiders don't understand Serendee. They call it a cult, they make fun of their clothes and lack of makeup. They scorn their arranged marriages. But they don't understand. Imogen is completely devoted to Serendee but she carries her family's shame, so when she is chosen to be the wife of the divine leader's son she is honored and surprised. But when she finds out the truth, it turns to sadness and shame. She's being given orders she finds shocking but it is not her place to question even when it involves her future mate's best friends. She must follow The Way.

You need to go into this book realizing it is twisted. There is brainwashing, corruption, and depravity. It will trigger your temper and disgust. You will want to shake Imogen, get her to wise up, and maybe just escape with her. You will question why she is a willing participant in her own abuse. Such is the nature of a cult. She is a true believer, honest, good, and kind. She's also intelligent, so it's easier to sympathize over her innocence and ignorance. Levi, Silas, and Elon all cross lines in the name of duty, yet they each show moments of humanity and kindness. You can see the feelings of tenderness and protectiveness developing. Rex, Imogen's mate is another story. He's selfish and cruel. I'm not sure how Angel can redeem him with me since I just don't see anything decent in him. I look forward to more.

Whew. This book was certainly unique.
I had searched for a reverse harem book that involved cults, because quite frankly, cults have always intrigued me. I couldn’t find many, but this one was highly recommended. So here we are.

The book started off a bit slow for me. I honestly had to push myself through the first few chapters. I can’t put my finger on why exactly other than it just felt a tad boring to start. But as we got into meeting each of the boys, it spiced it up a tad.
Imogene is our FMC. She’s completely devoted to Serenadee and Anex - the leader. She has spent everyday of her life preparing to be a devoted and committed spouse to her future mate. And the day of her “Ordering,” she is utterly shocked by who Anex has chosen to commit her to. I won’t give away any spoilers, but her whole world is shocked to the core.
She quickly finds out that she has a special job per Anex, and basically all that she was taught is thrown to the side as she has to complete this job.

Ultimately, there’s a lot more going on within this cult than meets the eye. And Imogenestruggles with finding out it’s not all she was taught and believed all while discovering love and her sexuality at the same time.

Once the book picked up, it was hard to put down. The spicy scenes were hot, and it was interesting watching Imogene discover herself and come into her own skin.

Definitely will read book two!

Gripping from the start!

This book sucked me in from the first chapter and didn't let up until the very end. I have never read a romance book before where the FMC is in an actual, honest to goodness cult and I found the entire premise extremely intriguing.

The FMC Imogene is very nieve and innocent, as she has been raised within the strict confines of the cult, but she isn't dumb. She is insightful and intelligent and I loved reading the chapters from her POV and experiencing the layers of deception getting peeled back.

The men are all unique and easily distinguishable from one another. The chapters in their POVs also let the reader see the darker underbelly of the cult, and the moral compromises the men make to justify staying in the cult and supporting its primary leader. The book also highlights how the leaders keep people controlled and submissive through manipulation and gaslighting.

The romance and steam was 🔥. As much as this is about the cult, the plot develops organically and is character driven; nothing ever feels forced or contrived. Angel focuses on the characters, their struggles, motivations and their relationships. I am looking forward to the next installment.

★3.5/5! i hate men. i am mens number one hater. Rex is a joke of a human. IF HE HAS NO HATERS I AM DEAD. actually no not even death could stop me from hating this man. i do not care what anyone says that certain scene was not dub-con it was R̶A̶P̶E̶!!! Imogene deserves the world.

"𝑰𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚'𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏." :(

Imogene you’re so perfect! Everyone telling her she’s too skinny, too flat BRO LEAVE HER THE FUCK ALONE OMG! When i say everyone is saying that, everyone = men. Next book would be perfect if Imogene left them all and found someone who would love her for her. these men? yeah no. 99% sure they’re only here for her body and sex. Silas, Elon and Levi yeah they’re just a lot of things? annoying at times but also showed her kindness? i have mixed feelings about them

THEY BETTER COME TO THEIR SENSES AND TREAT HER LIKE A FREAKING QUEEN! istg ill riot for her. Rex will never be capable of loving her, he only cares about himself. 3 stars for Imogene my girl 🖤

Rex i hope you die.

Ok. This is some culty version of a handmaid’s tale. Sort of. Distantly, like a far removed cousin.
Cult leader is charming and creates matches for all the youngins at the cult. They all buy into it and he finally decides to match his son with the daughter of someone who left the cult. Wild, right? Except the son hates his daddy and doesn’t want much to do with the girl. So his besties are “training” her to be what he wants. Which is half normal, half not? I don’t really know what this dude wants, but she’s getting lots of orgasms just from nipple play and kissing. Good for her. This obviously evolves, hence my chili pepper rating below.
This all comes to a point and right at the end she sees what this is really all about and she prob should’ve listened to the son when he wanted to run away. Too late now, boo. Cult daddy is evil, duh. How will they get out of this?? I’ll read the next book to find out.
