Tis the season...for slaying!

Fresh off a disturbingly long absence for which she has no explanation or recollection, Quinn MacKenna—reformed Catholic, semi-retired arms dealer, and borderline alcoholic—is busy enjoying the Nordic idea of an afterparty before becoming quickly embroiled in a bitter power struggle coinciding with the advent of the Yuletide season.

The issue at hand: the future of the Norse pantheon and its role in the mysterious Omega War to come. The participants: Odin, the All-father and leader of the Aesir, against his younger brothers, Vili and Vé.

Unfortunately, amidst this tumultuous backdrop, Quinn finds herself bereft of everything she once possessed: her Valkyrie armor, her legendary spear, and even her dubious divinity. As such, Quinn has no choice but to broker lopsided alliances and cultivate tenuous friendships while searching for answers to questions she doesn’t even know how to ask.

Of course, when dealing with ancient and occasionally spiteful gods, it’s not always easy to tell who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. To that end, Quinn must decide what paths to take and how far she’s willing to go down them—even if that means doing so while blind. But then perhaps it really is as simple as some people say: seeing is believing, and believing is seeing.

Even if you have to trade an eye for the privilege.

If you like Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, Steve McHugh, Michael Anderle, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Shannon Mayer, or K.F. Breene, you won't be able to put down the highly addictive Phantom Queen Diaries or anything else in the Temple Verse.

I found this book to be frustrating and disappointing. I started reading this series in June of 2018, the day it was first released. Quinn was one of favorite Templeverse characters(note the word was). I watched how this author improved as an author with his writing style and his ability to draw me into each book. I did not find that happening in this book. The day this book was released O’Connell explained in actual story line time this book happens AFTER the next book. But was released first. I understand story lines and plot and character progression. What I don’t understand is how an author that used to create beautiful word pictures has evolved into a nerd’s dream. An author that is more interested in throwing in obscure movie/tv references(many) and smart aleck comments. Occasional snark I enjoy but I was tripping on them in this. I felt like Bullwinkle and his hat comment was going to come up. The author made some joking comment about making readers wait years for a book, I didn’t laugh. I spent a frustrating amount of time trying to remember if mentioned characters had been in previous books and the circumstances surrounding the character. I finally found Hilde in Moscow Mule, which I read in 2018. There are about a bazillion Norse deities and I wouldn’t be surprised if at least a dozen were added to the story line. I can only hope they don’t all show up in future books. Yes, I was frustrated reading this book but was more disappointed. We waited this long for a story continuation and were given this jokey book. I saw some of the author’s old writing style in the 49th chapter. I just wish I didn’t have to sludge through the first 48. I’ve read a book every day this year. Yuletide Punch took five days to finish because I was that frustrated reading it.

The book was not my favorite. It is still worth a read, but I don't think you'll be missing much if you skip out on this one.

Quinn has become my favourite character in the Templeverse, simply because I see much of myself in her, but I'll be honest, I blazed through the other books so fast, and it's been a while, so I, like Quinn, also had amnesia about the previous story. I can kind of remember bits, but mostly not. Even saying that though, this story didn't feel like Quinn. She's never really been whiney and that's what she felt like here. A whiner. The Goats are honestly the best thing about this particular book. The ever present nods to the authors favourite fans, that are laced through every single book (referring to the same few people) are becoming old. I've no doubt the rabid fans on the page will adore it, but it's not even like it's cleverly done anymore. Just shoe-horned in there. Basically not overly enamoured any more. Feels unnecessarily long winded.

It was a good book but too short for my liking. It felt like a set up book for the next one.

Not up to it's usual standards for the series. Feels like it was rushed out as a placeholder. I will forgive it if the next one is above average.

Confusion

I'm trying to like it but I'm not sure I can like this book much.

It didn't mesh well with the end of the previous book. It mostly seemed like filler to get to the next book.

Easily skipped in such a large series of many books but maybe a transition to something?

Quinn is back! Found drinking in Valhalla, she is brought to Freya mysteriously de-powered, missing some gear and memories. While investigating this, and trying to stay out of trouble, she (of course) steps right into it, discovering a plot within the pantheon's political machinations. With few friends and fewer options, she sets us up for a raucously great time.

Aptly named.....a stocking filler

Oh Quinn! While the last book filled me with excitement as Quinn finally appeared to own her power and become worthy of her place in the Omega War beside Nate and Callie, this book took a wrong turn on Yggdrasil and got lost in its fathomless roots on the way to nowhere!
I enjoyed the story because the authors are good story tellers, but thats all it appeared to be..... a story with little to no bearing on the over reaching plot of the Templeverse.
The format with previous books has always been an appearance of an event from the other main protagonists or the heroes themselves and a continuation of the story like a jigsaw piece smoothly flowing the story forward such as Callie's killing of Death following on to Nate's of Conquest and Gunnars' of War etc. The reveal of what that meant was intriguing and tied the stories beautifully.
This book of Quinns offered nothing of the sort. We know Nate will meet Quinn at the well and thats where I thought Quinns story would flow from. What she has to do with Nates spell finding her will be revealed I'm sure.....which should have been what this book was about.... instead.... disappointed.
The effort that went in to this book would have been better spent getting on with the story.
The authors have created this epic cliffhanger that I imagine will go one of 2 ways....either Quinns next book will tell us what she did (300 or so pages) or we'll be so disappointed that what she did wasn't worth the cliffhanger lol.
I read on in hope.

What a cliffhanger...

I say that, not because it is an unusual thing in any of The Templeverse books, but because it seems Quinn's books are fewer and farther between in comparison to the other two series which usually don't have too long of a wait before we get the next book. The Phantom Queen series doesn't seem to get as much attention, which is a shame because Quinn is such a great character, yet compared to the characters in the other two series, we don't know as much about her and she doesn't interact with the Nate's crew or Callie's crew often. I find this odd since she is supposedly an integral part of the plan made by the "Master Planners", as I like to think of them, i.e. Nate's parents, Callie's parents, etc.. I attribute this to being co-authored, so I will blame Cameron O'Connell for this. I jest, but in all honesty, Quinn deserves just as much as Nate and Callie do. Nevertheless, I found this book enjoyable and I can't wait to for the release of "The Dark Horse", as it has now been referenced in each of the latest books in all 3 series. Maybe we won't get as many Quinn books but, hopefully, she'll get some time in the upcoming books as The Omega War has just begun.

In Yuletide Punch, the action is once again very nearly non-stop as Quinn Mackenna works her way through Valhalla and Fólkvangr drinking, fighting, and generally getting into trouble.

Quinn has mysteriously appeared in Valhalla missing several items she was supposed to have returned to Freya, something she was supposed to have given to Nate Temple, and at least six months’ worth of memories. She spends a great deal of time drinking to be sure the missing memories stay missing. But she also consults with Freya to see if the memories can be recovered.

It’s been a while since the last book, and I kind of feel like Quinn with the amnesia thing – what was it she did in the last book to cause this anyway? I probably should have gone back and re-read the ending, but there are so many books to read…

Anyway… Along the way she stumbles upon a plot to kill Odin and have it blamed on Nate Temple.

Quinn is back up to speed with snarky comments this time, although she receives little support in this endeavor from most of the einherjar, Valkyries, and Aesir, who are too preoccupied with more serious matters.

Quinn has lost her memories and her powers?

Quinn MacKenna is a complex character, even to herself. This story sees her on a journey of remembrance and self-discovery. What she finds both surprises her and brings back forgotten memories. Is she a good person? What price will she have to pay?

If this is the first book you’ve read in the Templeverse, I’d recommend you go back to the beginning and start with Obsidian Son, the first book in the three series. You’ll be introduced to Nate Temple and learn his quirks: everything from cow-tipping the Minotaur to his taste in women. Prepare yourself for a royal treat as you immerse yourself in the Templeverse.

SPOILER ALERT:

This book ends on a cliffhanger. In general, I don’t like or enjoy cliffhangers. That’s not a good way to get me to buy the next book; however, I’m making an exception for this writing duo. They are talented enough that I truly want to know what happens, even though the cliffhanger approach aggravates and annoys me.

The Eyes have it.

Quinn MacKenna has always been a hard drinker, sort of living her Irish stereotype at times. But this time in the Halls of Valhalla, drinking Meade with the Einherjar to drown a pain so terrible she can't even remember it, she may have stepped across the line into...well you will see.
Added to the plethora of Aesir and Vanir, and other mythical inhabitants of The Nine Realms, we have met so far in the Templeverse, we now meet and converse with Sif, Heimdall, Tyr, Odin's brothers, more Valkyries, Flyt with Ratatoskr, and one of the dreaded Norns.
If you have read Dark Horse you know the ending of this Quinn MacKenna tale. Now discover how she reached that point.

i found this book hilarious in places but then what would you expect from snarky Quinn McKenna? I wouldn't say it's an easy book to read, however I think you have to pay attention to all the books in this series to stay abreast of the plot. It does end on a cliffhanger so if your not a fan of these you may not be happy about that, however I think it would not have done the story any favours to finish it off in a hurry.
A great fan of all the Templeverse books so I look forward to whatever is yet to come.

Dynamic Duo does it again

Once again the duo of writers, Cameron and Shayne, have written a tale of an adventure.
Quinn McKenna, a loud and sassy in your face redhead, sobers up enough to find herself in the realm of the Norse Gods. With no memories of how she got there.
Walk with her on this path of lies, truths and trickery. Odin, Freya, Tyr, Heimdall, and others. Will Quinn find her way again or continue to stay lost with no memory of her recent past?

What path are the writers taking us down and to what endings?

disappointing

I was so excited when this book finally came out because I wanted to read another book in this series, but I was very disappointed in this book. It seem like the author jumped around a lot and it was really difficult to keep all of the characters and what they were doing straight. It was almost like the authors were trying to fill in space so they would say the same thing in different ways for or five times before they would go on. It did get annoying. I hope the next book in the series is better.

Solid read

A story that feels almost like filler, but is necessary. Just as you sometimes have to take a short trip down a minor road to get to the next big one on a road trip this book serves the same. It gets us where we need to be for the next book while also showing us what's going on with a few characters we may not have seen lately, or from a view beyond Nate's. It isn't exactly the full spread the other books delivers that leaves you sated, but it's a between-course bite that cleans the pallette while preparing you for the next dish.

Oh Shayne, you are so mean!

WTF? Must you continue to tease me with these horrendous cliff hangers? It's just so cruel. Love the book (other than the ending). . Quinn has grown so very much and I am still crazy about her sense of loyalty, bravery and her faults. She makes mere mortals believe we can be great without being perfect. Things ate getting really tangled, Shayne. How the hell are you and Master Nate (and crew) gonna fix all of this? Can't wait for my next trip to the Templeverse!

WAIT, WHY???? CAN YOU JUST.... UGH..

Well they done it again.... they'll give you an inch and takes a mile to recover from the mind melting experience of trying to get your footing back after kicking square in the guts. Brilliant and well done to my favorite author monkeys. And as Oliver says while looking up from his empty bowl " please sr may we have some more" more quickly this time!

You have to read this book!

You have to read this book. It’s a landing that takes us to where Quinn is now & then leaves us bleeding for more at the end! It’s fun to read Quinn’s current story. Full of mayhem and crazy, in true Nordic style, we follow her adventures in Odin’s world. Laughter and cringes will keep you turning the pages. The ending, well you just have to read it to find out. I promise you will be screaming for more!!!

Quinn is back

I really have missed Quinn. She’s my favourite character in the Templeverse and a new story has been a long time in coming.

This is a good old fashioned mystery story. You can see that wheels are in motion and it’s up to Quinn (and you the reader) to figure out what is going on and why.

A great addition to the series, although with any long running story arcs, there’s a cliffhanger at the end.

Quinns's Christmas

I love these books because i never know where Silvers and O'Connell will take the characters and the the story. This story is mainly Quinn interacting with the remaining Norse deities and their manipulations along with others from the Temple Verse and as always, leaves me wanting to read the next book now.

Great book frustrating ending

I love Cameron and shakes books, but they take too long between books. I find I have to reread the last book to remember what had happened before. This is very frustrating so if I could make a request that the books come out closer together. Otherwise they both write very well. The stories are always interesting and make you want more.

Not sure what good this review will be after, I'm supposing , whoever reads it has read the other 500 TempleVerse books. It , again , another amazing book by the kings of their genre ! I keep thinking , " ok , this one is gonna suck , " but they never do ! So I guess all I can say is keep writing them and I'll keep reading them !! Thank you

"Perhaps I had done something truly terrible. Something genuinely irredeemable. What then?" - Quinn

Quinn McKenna... Woman of mystery... Thief, martial arts economics expert... Valkyrie? When Quinn finds herself in Vahalla, with no memory of the previous six months, she starts asking questions...

A rip roaring, lip smacking rousing tale, with plenty of action and derring do!

Hopefully next is better

Comparing this to the previous in the series is like day and dusk. Not necessarily terrible, but certainly not as good. It seemed like half a book almost to me with little advancement of the overarching story. A few sentences of spoilers and you can easily skip this book.

another great Templeverse novel!

Herein lies another great story of the Templeverse, told superbly by my favorite author and co-author. Urban fantasy at its best! A novel with relatable characters, scenes written so well that you are transported right into the action, magic, humor, adult themes, mystery, this book has it all!

I love Quinn and all the quirky characters in Hate Temple's crazy world. Usually my ratings are 5 star. There s time the story left a terrible cliff hanger! Bad Authors! It was probably written by Loki because the writers were too hung over.
