I wasn't sure what to expect when I requested an ARC of this book and I'm not sure that the author was sure what she wanted to do with it either. It's not really a mystical book, though it has supposed magical things like how to read your cat's litter box leavings or what the colors of their toes says about their personalities. It is presented as though it's truth, but I can't really take it seriously. The beginning has a catnip tea reading exercise that could be really cool, but it involves ingredients besides catnip leaves that you're not going to have and a drop of your own blood from a cat scratch, so it's not really a serious activity (I hope?). She also gives a lot of information about what tail signs mean and things like that, but it doesn't seem to be actually accurate (and some cat tail positions are quite obviously made up, like in the shape of a pentagram) so it's not really effective as a "how to read your cat" book or a fortune telling book. I don't think the author actually has any training in either fortune telling or cat behavior, so it's all just sort of a fun make believe romp. That said, it has darling illustrations and it's a fun read, especially for cat lovers who aren't looking for too much depth.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book via NetGalley.
I thought this book would be about divination (tarot, oracles), as the synopsis led me to believe, but it's more of a guide to understanding your cat (if you have one). If you are looking for a fun book about the mystic arts, this isn't the book for you; but if you have a cat or know one and want to engage more with it, this could be a fun little book to read and learn more about your feline friend. The "funny bits" in the book seemed more confusing than funny to me as it was unclear when the author was giving us accurate information and when she was just joking around. If the whole book was just a satirical piece, then I guess the intention wasn't conveyed very well.
I absolutely loved it the artwork though; it's extremely cute.
One of the cutest cat books I've read but spiced up with magical element. I would love to use my cat in order to make spells and guide my way in the world.
Tongue in cheek guide to understanding felines using some slightly tweaked occult sciences. Amusing with gorgeous illustrations done mainly in tarot card style. Colorful and true to feline natures and stances. Mainly for cat lovers. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Cats are undeniably the most duel-natured, larger-than-life persona in the animal kingdom. Allow me to elaborate: felines have been worshipped as gods since their domestication many civilizations ago, gained the reputation of evil wrongdoings as witches’ familiars, given the title of, “King of the Jungle” and yet cuddled in millions and millions of households worldwide like a little wibby baby. This is a cat’s world and we’re simply living in it. It comes as no surprise that felines can serve as a mystical portal connecting us to the spiritual realm and are thus useful as divination tool-partners. Cat whisperer and perhaps the founder of cat occult with her cat tarot cards, Megan Lynn Koot, introduces feline divination in, “Pawmistry: Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe with Cats”.
If you are seeking an absolutely adorable, illustrative, vivid, comedic, unique-subject, charming, cat-centric piece for yourself or your spiritual cat-loving BFF; then you have to look no further than Kott’s “Pawmistry”. “Pawmistry” immediately enraptures readers with its glorious cover alone and a glance through its illustrated pages; but when you laugh-out-loud in the first two sentences… then you know “Pawmistry” is a pure masterpiece.
Kott’s work is simple and yet simultaneously clever; exploring how to use your household Mr. Flufferson as a divination aide. Kott is hilarious with her approach being both affectionate with cats and her readers creating a style and is approachable and relatable. This doesn’t discredit her actual knowledge on the topic; offering intriguing divination methods such as reading’s a cat’s ‘toe beans’, food kibble patterns, eye blinks, etc. “Pawmistry” is mostly meant to be silly for the cat-lover audiences but it also has that, “What if?” – factor that adds a reality check and ensures that “Pawmistry” isn’t just a cheesy gag-gift.
Kott's organic writing is delightful with “Pawmistry” and never “tries too hard” to be engaging – she just is; while also supplementing the work with interactive activities, pages and even a poster-sized divination board. It is almost demeaning to the book to describe it as ‘cute’; but it is just so darn cute! “Pawmistry” is difficult to put down but it must be put aside in order to savor the pages because readers will not want it to end.
Cuteness aside; actual facts and depth are prevalent on the pages of “Pawmistry” which is why it is spell-binding on many levels (pun intended). Not to mention, the paired illustrations are perfect and equally engaging. “Pawmistry” can simply do no wrong.
Kott is exceptional at stylistic sense, formatting and knowing the ideal ratio of time spent on a singular cat-divination topic. For such a small volume; “Pawmistry” packs a lot of punch. Kott finalizes the text with a summary conclusion on cat divination, background author information, further reading suggestions, etc. The ending is memorable and solidly defines the purpose of the text.
“Pawmistry” is a super fast read (1-2 days) but is emotive-enough for a book twice its length. Kott’s work is witty, charismatic, informative, distinctive and compelling both visually and on the subject-at-hand. “Pawmistry” is a delightful little book suggested for all cat-obsessed readers and especially those interested in divination, occult, spirituality, etc.
*Note: I own a black cat and she, curiously, was super-interested in and interactive with “Pawmistry”. She went as far as immediately pouncing on the divination board and then laying on it. Hmm! Very interesting, indeed!
This was hilarious, and I learned so much! I can’t wait to try all of it out with my cats! I like the paw readings, like hand readings but for cats. The divination board in the back is also very cool! This was fantastic and I totally recommend it to any cat lover.
Pawmistry: Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe with Cats is a ~120 page book on divination and mysticism based on cat behavior and physical traits (paw reading, "kibbleography," etc). It's a cute concept and full of well done illustrations, but I'm not sure of it's usefulness beyond humor. The "tongue-in-cheek" style and blurred the lines between the author's jokes and the informative text on cats, making it a bit unclear what the take-aways were or if it's all meant to be a just a gift for a cat lover. The book doesn't really take itself seriously, and I wished it would have included some "real" information on cat behavior in any of the sections instead of sarcasm.
This book is set to be released October 12th, 2021. I received an uncorrected e-ARC for review.
so cute! i have three cats but theres only one i believe can connect with me on a spiritual level. i wanted to learn how to communicate with her and this book honestly helped. still not sure if its just satire or if this book is informational, but it helped! i loved the interactive drawing parts too. such great activities for you and your cat!
Whether your are a cat lover, a witchy vibes catcher...or both, you will love this book. It is fun and whimsical with cute illustrations and lots of jokes and silly activities to make it interactive. A great gift item for any major cat fan in your life and just to have to pick up from time to time.
Very interesting and hilarious, I like the mix of sarcasm and mysticism. I also love the divination board at the back! Received as a gift and really enjoyed it, a beautiful book to keep on the magickal shelf!
Your cat is not just a playful floof filled with love and painful pointy claws. Your cat can also predict the future. In fact, he or she is probably giving you hints every day about your future. You just have to learn to pay attention and read the signs. That is the beauty fo Pawmistry, the art and science (or just the light-hearted humor) of unlocking the secrets of the universe with cats.
Author and illustrator Megan Lynn Kott has taken the time to study the kitties to figure out what they’re trying to tell us about our present and future. And she is ready to share the answers with us She explains what the different tail configurations mean. She tells us about the toe beans, what the different colors mean. She teaches us about right- and left-pawedness, and the knowledge that unlocks about your beloved chonk.
Pawmistry includes sections on learning to read the scattering of the toys, or the kibbleography of the meaning of the food left in the bowl. There are chapters on the slow blink, the offerings in the litter box, and a chart for where to do the scratches and the scritches. And on the back cover is the Feline Divination Board (it’s in the ebook too), so you can use your cat to answer questions either by the choice of treats or by the playing of the wand toy. (Although this is an advanced technique, not to be taken on lightly or with inferior treats.)
This adorable gift book will be a big hit with cat fans of all ages and offers lots of satirical fun along with some genuine helpful advice for cat owners. The charming illustrations pair well with the playful ideas, like the book was written by someone with the soul of a cat.
Personally, I really enjoyed the whimsy and playfulness, and the way Kott understands that being a cat person is a magical journey, and some of us need a guide to find our way. It’s fewer than 200 pages, so it’s a short read. But the downside to that is that it’s a short read. I would’ve loved some more content to celebrate all the special joy that cats bring us. Still, it’s a fun, charming book and will be a big hit as a gift for celebrations or as a welcome gift (or cautionary guide) for first-time cat owners. And remember the real secret of the universe with cats: hiss less, purr more.
Egalleys for Pawmistry were provided by Chronicle Books through Edelweiss, with many thanks.
Suggested to me by my sister and/or niece for whatever reason I am not quite sure besides probably the inclusion of the subject of cats.
Pawmistry started off rather decent and was quite interesting in some of its applications. It provides the reader with takes on familiar occult New Age practices for those who may want to know more such as how to read your cats paws, read to read the remnants of cat food and also to translate the color of the cats pads on the bottom of the feet. But just as much as it appeared to be interesting as there are also included activity sheets you start to get a bit restless and begin thinking that even though the author is a practitioner at least by her bio this is a cat spoof thus not meant to be taken serious by anyone in that particular community.
The writing was simple as such and even though the book tried for a comedic informative appeal it attracted to me more so for being a book about cat facts as they were interspersed in the mix. Those facts did appear to be on point but not enough that I would pay for this book as a addition to my own library as a cat guide.
Finally the book is brightly illustrated for readers while the cats are pretty much adorable if you like the art style. Furthermore each chapter is illustrated with a cat on card stock that is suppose to be a take on a less formal-styled tarot card thus keeping with the theme.
All in all it was rather okay if you are looking for a spoof quick read with cats as a topic but I wouldn't recommend this book for either an actual informative cat guide nor a guide to magickal arts for those who may have cats in their homes.
I take both cats and practicing seriously, and can’t stand people who think not-funny jokes are cute. So it’s really hard to correctly review this book.
Paw pads are referred to “beans” but it’s also highly discouraged that you call yourself “owner” and your cat a “pet”. I’m sick of people telling me what to call things that are actual facts. A pet is a pet. (Fact). A pet IS NOT a fur baby. (FACT). The term “fur baby” is stupid to me, so I’ll stick with pet. I paid for my cat at the animal shelter. I am, indeed, the legal owner. I am NOT “it’s” human. My cat didn’t legally pay for me. My cat also is not responsible to care for my basic needs. And that’s why it’s called that, and it’s ok. It doesn’t imply that I have an overlord relationship with my cat. Ugh!!!
I want to state ALLLLL the things in the book are completely made up by the author. These are not “real” spells you have to do. You don’t need to drink tea or use your blood for a spell to work.
Please don’t record your cat’s shit for a week and think it’s reading the future. Same with it’s leftovers. My cat can’t see very well close up, despite just turning a year old. He’s not telling me anything special, other than to turn his bowl 180 degrees and point out that he missed a spot.
So please, if you are a person that is interested in cat behavior or witchcraft, you can learn both correctly elsewhere. This is not a book for that. This is a book you get your boss for Secret Santa that’s obsessed with cats.
One hot and humid morning, my Siamese cat Mochi and I began reading Pawmistry. The book explains how your cat is “privy to the most staggering universal truths and yet [is] still being regarded as a mere house pet!” The author explains her dislike of the word pet in a chapter footnote, “try substituting the phrases mystical fur companion, fuzzywuzzy wizard bear, or bewitching floofer baby.“
So, Mochi, my mystical fur companion, and I would have loved to try the book’s tea recipe, the Trial of Bastet, to verify that Mochi is a mystical guide. But Mochi seems to think that would be a waste of good catnip. And, since she is a Siamese companion, it is obvious to both of us that she knows secrets. So, on to divination by reading her tail, the food crumbs that fall from her mouth while eating, and even her poo. While the picture seems muddled, I’m sure that is my own incompetence. Or maybe my other cat, um, fuzzywuzzy wizard bear, Ninja, is mucking up the signs. It couldn’t be the mysterious Mochi, my bewitching floofer baby.
“Fortune favors the furry.”
Pawmistry is a great gift for the cat person in your life. It is humorous. The illustrations are pretty. Many of the situations will be familiar to those with whom cats deign to live. 4 stars!
Thanks to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book was quite the fun read. Most notably, I became obsessed with the illustrations; they are absolutely beautiful. While we can't take this book to seriously, there is a blood brew after all, it’s filled with a lot of interactive pages for you to try to get to know your cat better. Some of the insights are straight up jokes, while others are real understandings. As long as you go into this book with a fun and exciting mindset, I think you’ll quite enjoy it.. if not for the illustrations alone.
Pawmistry definitely makes the perfect gift or coffee table book. If you find yourself wanting more, like myself, I suggest taking a look at the authors website to browse her gorgeous prints.
Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle for providing me with an advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The book will be published October 21, 2021.
Whilst I'm not 'unfamiliar' with other books by Megan (team dik-dik here!), I failed to grasp the true intention behind this book. And in case you want to put me up on r/woosh; I did truly enjoy her other books, and understand this kind of humour. But in this case, however, I failed to truly grasp who she is making fun of. Is it the witchcraft community altogether? Just the people that keep on referring to their pet as familiars? Cat owners in general? Crazy cat ladies? All of the above?
The thing is that hidden in all the jokes and tongue-in-cheek humour, there is some truth hidden. About spaying or neutering your cat, for example. This tossed me from one side to another, not knowing what was meant to be a joke, and what wasn't. Probably just me; I know my humour is often not like that of others. And now I'll reread Unfamiliar Familiars.
Princess Fuzzypants here: As is well known, we cats were worshipped as gods by the Egyptians, forward thinking fellows that they were. Over the millennia, humans have either put us on pedestals or thought we were the most evil creature. They are only human and can be forgiven their inconsistency when it comes to those of us of the feline purrsuasion.
This book unlocks many of the secrets we have hidden from the human race. Being the all knowing beings that we are, we knew many humans could not handle the insights. However enlightened humans have observed sagely and now will share their wisdom with the masses. Approach it with awe and caution. Use it well grasshopper. Use it well.
I'm giving this 5 stars for originality and creativity. It's a really fun read. I probably won't be divining anything with my cat's paws (using his toe pads or toe beans as the author refers to them) or his litter box habits (litter box scrying) or his food bowl remnants (kibbleography) or his claws (claws currently submerged in your arm: artistic temperament), but just reading about techniques for these things was super fun.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for the E Arc NetGalley and Chronicle publishing. I read this with my precious little fur but snuggled in a fuzzy blanket by my side. I did almost disturb him to see the color of his paw beans, I didn’t want to upset the balance of the universe. Anyone that has ever loved a cat will love this deep dive in to the realm of the feline. The illustrations are fantastic and so was the content. Thank you for the cozy read.
This book was a delight full of beautiful illustrations of cats, useful tips, and a whole bunch of whimsy. I now know that my own cat would prefer being called a "bewitching floofer baby" than a pet. There are pages to record the signs you have gleaned from your cat, such as what their toe beans tell us, reading kibble, and more.
I know quite a few cat lovers who would enjoy this quick read. It would be a perfect gift for a new cat parent!
[reviewed advanced reader's copy] My cat is definitely not my familiar. I not sure she likes me all that much. Anyway, I had to take some screenshots from this one to share with my cat-loving family. This one might be a fun gift for the cat-lover in your life.
This fun read is a great gift for cat lovers, especially those interested in tarot and divination. I loved the art. It might make you feel one step closer to understanding your cat too (as if that's possible).
Had a lot of fun in reading this book: there're cats, humour and some occult. Great illustrations, a lot of laugh and an excellent book. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine
A fun , humorous and educational book. I found out a lot about my cat. She is very sensitive and a left pawed cat. I definitely want to try the divination board but I have to think of a question first. Great book for Wiccans with Cats.
Hahahaha what a fantastic little book! A nice quick read and lots of laughs. Absolutely love the fold out Divination Board! Will definitely be trying that out once my scaredy cat is a little less scared. Highly recommend!
An essential read for anyone finding their life governed by a cat and wondering what lies ahead. I fear my overlords will not wish to share the secrets of the universe, but I will try my best.
