Bound to Kill

Rate this book

An assassin haunted by the past. A detective risking his pension and his life to find her. And a far greater evil afoot than either of them can imagine.

Too volatile to stay in the U.S. government’s elite kill squad, Kana Watanabe is ambushed and betrayed by her own team. Driven underground and cloaked in the anonymity of the dark web, she emerges twice as deadly––the most sought-after assassin on the planet. But she is no longer alone. Deep within her something powerful, something unearthly, has taken hold.

Now risking everything on a  triple-kill contract that will make or break her career, she is forced to abandon all her own rules for a mysterious and demanding client. Her actions uncover a trail of hidden lives and an emerging power vacuum that baffles her as much as the detective determined to find her.

Is the entity inside her friend or foe? And will her instincts be enough to see her through this mandate before not only the detective and her former team catch up with her, but also her violent Yakuza past?

"...She suddenly felt her energy leave her...the voice leaving her-the spirit exiting her body...She had seen outlines of the spirit, a blurred vision of an apparition glowing orange."

Once again, the spirit world is playing a dangerous game in Bound To Kill-A Prequel Story To The Earthbound Series-by imaginatively creative author Fynn Perry.

Assassin Kana "Shadow Dragon" Watanabe doesn't always understand the voice in her head but she can't deny it has protected her more than any humans in her life. Now as she tries to complete three assassinations in NY that will give her enough money to disappear forever she finds herself relying on her spiritual passenger to guide her to safety.

Detective Johansson had hoped his transfer to the end of Long Island would be a peaceful transition into a well earned retirement but when a body is found murdered in a judge's Montauk mansion with no sign of forced entry or any kind of struggle he realizes his career might just be ending with a bang.

With precision sharp detail the author brings us into Kana's violent underground world filled with heartless criminals including her own father. We also meet ruthless rogue American covert government agents who have their own agenda for wanting Kana dead. Though a murderer one can't help but root for Kana with her battered background and salacious life. She is definitely the lesser of evils in this novel.

The brilliance of this story is that the supernatural element adds to its twistiness but it also works perfectly as a heart pounding nail biting extremely clever crime thriller.

Though this a prequel to the highly entertaining emotional supernatural crime thriller Earthbound, previously reviewed 3/15/21, it can be read as a stand alone but really why not get the full richness of this intense world building experience and read both.

I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Bound to Kill is a crime thriller that follows Kana Watanabe, an assassin for hire, on a triple kill assignment that uses all her special talents. What makes her so successful in her business is a voice in her head that gives her her heightened intuition and motivation. The voice is so strong, it feels like an entity if its own. Is it? Hmmm…chills. So good!

Another great supernatural suspenseful thriller from Fynn Perry. I really enjoyed the first one and this prequel did not disappoint. Really well written with a twisty plot and great characters. A great thriller all on it’s own, but the supernatural element just gives it that edge over other thrillers by giving it that element of something slightly different. While this book is a prequel, it can be read as a standalone but also a great addition to what I hope is going to become a long running series.

Excellent read, keeps you entertained from start to finish. I think Fynn Perry would be mad not to make the main character (Shadow Dragon) in this novel into a series of books. I'm confident given his very obvious talent that he would gain a wider audience if he sticks with the main character for more adventures.
The character "Shadow Dragon" did in some ways remind me of a movie with a female lead called "Close" with Noomi Rapace. The stories are completely different in every way but a strong female driven character able to compete with the men and still be convincing is hard to pull off and Fynn Perry does it in spades.
I'll be very disappointed if he doesn't develop this character further.

Another spellbinding crime thriller!!

A business man of Mexican origin is murdered in the summer home of a NY state Supreme Court Justice and papers that hint at the involvement of both the business man and the Justice is discovered strewn about.
Detective Frank Johansson takes the lead on the case and starts investigating it. He seeks the help of his brother officer Carruthers.

Thanks to the brilliant investigation of Tessa, they uncover very crucial facts relevant to the investigation.

When the same killer/assassin strikes again twice more, the investigation picks up momentum.

The content of the book is all about the investigation, the killer and the cops. Two characters are introduced that play a huge role later and now, I will have to go back to Earthbound to check on those two characters.
Another enrapturing, captivating mystery by Fynn Perry that holds the readers mesmerized until they finish the book!!!

I am still debating whether the assassin had the help of the phenomenon of spirit possession!! I will have to revise Earthbound to check on this matter and several other items!!

She is good. An assassin using her talents to take out drug dealers. Who is she working for? What motivates her to kill? Will she get caught? Great action packed read.
