CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

Stuff makes sense! Yay! I'm so glad that two important points that had confused me are finally explained here.

(Note: If you're not reading the series, this review will not make sense to you. I include all this info partly because sometimes the manga confuses me, and I refer to my own reviews of earlier volumes to answer my questions. :P )

First, Fai was not supposed to be able to do magic since volume 1, when the mark is removed from his back that is supposedly his magic's source. Yet throughout the series, he periodically does something that seems suspiciously magical. He claims it's not magic, or that it's some special kind that comes from a different source, or points to various equally shaky loopholes, and I'd been afraid something had been lost in translation or that the writers were just being sloppy. Oh me of little faith. Now, it turns out that the mark was actually a restraint on Fai's magical powers, and had been placed on him when he was a child along with what seems to have been a spell to make him misremember what the mark means.

(Bonus: I'm so glad Kurogane has the logical reaction, which I'd also had, that Fai restraining his growing powers made no sense. After all, Fai is cursed to kill the first person he meets with greater magical power than himself, so he should really be expanding his power as rapidly as possible to reduce the chances that he will meet such a person. But the flashback explains things: Ashura placed the mark on Fai so that the timing will be right when Ashura's own power passes Fai's, because Ashura wants Fai's curse to be used up by killing Ashura. And then, of course, Fai seems to have been made not to remember the reason for the mark at all.)

Then, there's the whole thing where Fai-actually-Yui feels guilty because Original Fai is dead, and Fai-actually-Yui thinks it was his fault. (So, for any poor lost person who is for some reason reading this despite not reading the series, Fai and Yui are twins, and when Fai tragically dies, Yui takes his name.) Our Fai (I don't care if he's really Yui, he's Fai to me) has a memory wherein someone asked him which of the two imprisoned twins should be rescued and which should die, and he chose for Original Fai to die and himself to escape. This confused me the whole time, because the memory really looked like it was Original Fai's. And in this volume, we find out that it actually was Original Fai's memory. I don't know whether Our Fai had it in his head because woooo twins are magical or because the bad guy put it there, the better to manipulate him. But I'm glad Our Fai no longer feels like he did that awful thing when actually it was Original Fai sacrificing himself for Our Fai's escape.

Now, I'm curious about the scene at the end: how exactly does cutting off his own arm allow Kurogane to pull Fai through the magical barrier? But thanks to all this awesome answering-of-my-burning-questions, I now trust CLAMP to make this make sense. And trusting an author is always nice. So yay!

(Also, Fai + Kurogane forever. Woo woo!)

Read it for the #JPLitReadathon.

Now we are getting to the meat of the plot, with only 7 more books to go we now know part of Sayorian's past as well as Kurogane and Fai's. There are a few missing pieces, but it's coming together quite nicely. The art is great, there are lots of action sequences in this volume and they are all done very nicely. Looking forward to continuing this tomorrow.

I have learned that when reading CLAMP i need to have the next volume when I go buy one. Let me first say that this cover is one of my favorites:) And that right away I knew it would be awesome-I mean look at that GORGEOUS cover! And what happened last volume made me scream in frustration that i didn't have the next handy-but I never expected, no, I didn't THINK that CLAMP could get any darker with Tsubasa and well, just look at what happened to Kurogane! And Fai-do I even need to say how shocked I am about the poor guy? I feel for him I really do. Losing someone you love so much that you refuse to believe them as dead is something I have unfortunately experienced many times and I'm only 16. I wouldn't ever take on a loved ones name though, but I can understand why Fai/Yui did it. So do we still call him Fai? I think he looks like a Fai. And then of course CLAMP throws in a cliffhanger but lucky for me I got the next one! Sadly I know I will regret not buying the 23rd as well because some lucky person bought the LAST one! So after volume 22 I have to WAIT. :( Why are you so amazing CLAMP!? You make me have heart attacks waiting for another copy to be released in Barnes and Nobles because other ppl are also buying them. But I also love you CLAMP. YOu are the first Mangaka group that made me glad to buy manga. I find most manga to be repetitive and yes, tsubasa has a well, but I just can't get bored of the series! I spend my own money on these volumes and oh they are SOOOOO WORTH it. Talk about AMAZINGLYGOREOUSART! I mean just flip open to a page of any of CLAMP's manga and tell me that they can't draw hands! Have you seen their drawings of hands?? SImply stunning! Yes, I find hands amazing as they are sooooooo hard to draw.

Review for complete series

Tsubasa is in a way a love letter to all of CLAMP's other works. I went into this having read almost all - definitely all relevant - series by CLAMP, so I can't say for sure, but I think this series is only half as fun if you haven't read the other works (preferably all). If you enjoy Easter Eggs and cameos, Tsubasa is an absolute treat.

For the longest time, Tsubasa was the longest manga series I owned; anything beyond 10 volumes makes me think twice as I find that most lengthy series just drag unnecessarily. However, it was impossible for me to say no to Tsubasa, Sakura and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura have been long-time favourite manga characters of mine, not to mention that I am generally very fond of CLAMP and all their big and small crossovers. Reading a story that combines almost their entire bibliography and with Sakura and Syaoran as the main characters was too good to say no to. It should also be mentioned that this series is heavily interwoven with xxxHolic's plot and should best be read alongside each other.

This Syaoran and Sakura are not the same from Cardcaptor Sakura (although the original Sakura makes a cameo). In essence, this is a story about travelling between dimensions - the same person can exist in different versions of themselves in different universes. Sakura and Syaoran travel between the different worlds - all very different - and meet characters and elements from all across CLAMP's other works. In fact, some characters appear more than once to highlight how the same being can exist and lead a different life in different worlds. It's really fun to see the characters from other stories living different lives, some are funny and some are bittersweet. CLAMP has killed off a fair amount of its characters in other works so it's nice to see some of them leading happier and peaceful lives.

In addition to meeting a whole lot of known characters, there are also a couple of Tsubasa original characters such as Fay and Kurogane who accompany Sakura and Syaoran on their travels. I've grown to love Fay and Kurogane almost as much as I love the other two - so while Tsubasa is very much a homage to other CLAMP works, it's also a very character-driven story with both Fay and Kurogane having intricate and deep personalities. I also have to express my apologies to Kurogane - I always expected not to like him because I'm not very fond of brawns-over-brains type of characters, but I was very wrong about him; great character, smart as well a strong and just a really great guy.

Being a work of CLAMP, it's almost needless to say that the art is beautiful. That being said, this is more of a shounen-esque series which also shows in the art with the somewhat oddly length limbs and a greater focus on action, weapons and muscles. I prefer shoujo art, but the facial art is much the same as other CLAMP works so I can absolutely live with that.

A downside of Tsubasa is plain and simple that it gets confusing. There are time skips, world switching, doubles across different series (xxxHolic) and rather vague motivations from the villain's side. At some point, I just decided to go with the flow rather than trying to make sense of every detail. There's a bit of a loose end, though I wouldn't exactly call it a band ending either. Now that they are working on a sequel, it'll be interesting to see where things will lead to next.

Either way, an absolute gem if you like CLAMP and crossovers, and Sakura, Syaoran, Fay and Kurogane are just a great team of characters - to be fair, Mokona is as much part of the team and deserves a mention too. Finally, I just love these characters.

If readers thought that the previous volume of Tsubasa was dramatic and action-packed, this one takes the story to a whole other level. In the previous storyarc the beginning of Fai’s past is revealed, but we don’t gain knowledge of the full extent of his curses until the true power of his saviour is revealed. Ashura-o is a vampiric monster, which he had kept secret for many years until Fai returned to his world, and it is revealed that his motivation for saving Fai in the first place was so that he can end his life. In his role as saviour, this puts Fai in a very tricky situation, since he must act against his instincts to hurt someone that he cares about. This seems to be for the greater good, but Ashura-o’s character is at once demanding that he be killed and revelling in his own power and the cleverness of using Fai’s curse. Truth, revelation, and loyalty may be the main themes for this story, but once again Clamp brings us back to the central narrative that explores the relationships between our group of adventurers. Kurogane and Fai have always been at odds with each other (mostly Kurogane, honestly), but when Fai is pushed to the edge of his sanity it is Kurogane who steps in to stop him from committing an act from which he cannot return. At the finale of the volume we see our group separated once more, as Fai returns Kurogane’s sacrifice to allow the rest of the group to escape to the next world, but I have no doubts that their paths will cross again.

In this volume we re-establish Kurogane as my favorite character! I have plot-hole issues, and he beats them up. It's a good system we have going. Fai's backstory continues, and it just keeps getting sadder. I guess we have an explanation as to why he always smiles - it keeps people from worrying about him, but it's rarely because he means it.
Woof, what a heart-pounding ending to the arc (I've seen this arc called Celes, Ceres, and Seresu, so I'm just giving up on what to name it)! I didn't know how badly I needed to see an all-out showdown from Fai against anyone else, especially when he's finally let slip that he really cares about the group. Also, Kurogane calling out an issue I had with Fai's backstory was so validating. I thought I would enjoy Ashura-ô's character much more than I actually did, but he's still pretty awful, so I guess it all shakes out.
The cliffhanger both makes me love Kurogane even more and makes me very worried about his near future. I guess I'll just need to read the next volume and find out.
See you in the next review!

What?! Every chapter, every page has more jaw-dropping twists and heart-stopping action. It's all happening!

Fai's being force to kill his majesty, battles with Karogane, an illusion of the real Fai (twin brother) gets sliced in half, Sakura's sleeping/soulless body gets threatened as incentive. Then Fai's curse gets triggered because he didn't kill his majesty (Karogane did) destroying the world and almost claiming Fai and Karogane, but just escaping by a Magic earring. Crazy stuff! I love it!

With the truth of Fai's intentions revealed, Kurogane takes him on in battle to protect his own life - but they must come together and make great sacrifices to defeat the insane Ashura-ō if they hope to reach the next realm alive. CLAMP revs up the heartbreak and pandemonium with an entry teetering on the edge of chaos. Is there any way for the group to come together again, or has their journey as allies come to a brutal end?

Kurogane really surprised me. He indeed isn't interested in Fay's past. I thought he would regret everything he sacrificed for Fay and yet here he is sacrificing even more.

Kurogane is really giving is whole body and soul to Fay. At the beginning of their journey the only one he could have sacrificed himself for would have been princess Tomoyo, but now Fay seems to be his priority.

The group has arrived in the country Fai started this journey from. What secrets has he been keeping?

I'm going to have to start taking notes at this point, though it's likely too little too late. Still enjoying the story though!
