That was easily the weakest of the oversized anniversary issues. For the most part, it's just cheap writers doing generic’y stories. There's nothing really special about anything in this book tbh. Pretty worthless, with subpar talent. The best thing is Nicola Scott’s pinup, and getting José Luis García-López art.
An underwhelming collection of Wonder Woman shorts, there are some good stand alone panels, but no stories that really manage to cement themselves amongst her already vast catalogue. 'Dated' might be the strongest of the bunch, if only for the cameos and fun dynamics. Mid-tier content overall, I can't help but think that Wonder Woman deserves slightly better for her anniversary collection.
A great tribute but not outstanding. Not a single appearance from Donna Troy. DC seems to have omitted her entirely from Diana’s canon. She was Wonder Woman also. All prior incarnations feature but no Donna. Cassie is also absent. Key creators Gail Simone, Phil Jimenez and Greg Rucka are also nowhere to be found. It’s great but could be better. Many elements of the mythos are absent. This is far from complete and for no reason at all Tom King who has never touched the character and writes arguably the weakest story takes a slot better given to someone who gets her voice better
This 80th Anniversary special really didn't do it for me. The stories felt so safe. No one was trying anything different with Wonder Woman or pushing the boundaries. None of the stories are bad per se; they're just something I've read 100 times in other Wonder Woman books.
pretty good homage to an iconic character. I haven't read a wonder woman comic before, I don't think. I'm definitely interested in reading more about her.
Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary 100 Page Super Spectacular
By various writers and artists.
It is an anniversary book. It is 100 pages. But is it super and spectacular?
Not quite, but it is fun and entertaining. It would have been better with two or three long stories. Instead we get nine short stories and a number of pin-up art pages. The stories cover various era's and facets of Wonder Woman's character but they're over too quick for there to be any real depth.
It's a good primer or introduction to the character before deciding whether to collect any of the comics or graphic novels and there's a lot of good artwork on display and I love the wraparound variant cover.
Other DC Comics characters turn up in some stories but WW always takes centre stage and her qualities and skills show why she has endured as a pop icon for so many years.
Beautiful artwork. Great stories. The only nit-picky things I have to mention are in the pinup of Wonder Women of the Multiverse I am disappointed that they left out the WW 600 costume, The New 52 costume, golden age costume, silver age costume etc. but maybe the artist didn’t mean it as a complete history of wonder woman and her costumes. Either way the artwork is still beautiful. The other thing I have to complain about is the absence of Donna Troy when all the wonder women are sitting around the table in Saturn Rising.
Stand out stories for me were Better Angels by Vita Ayala with beautiful art by Isaac Goodheart, Fresh Catch by Amy Reeder (again stunning art) and Dear Dianna by Mark Waid and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. Also great to see Paulina Ganucheau's beautiful artwork in here. There were a few duds but a nice collection of stuff overall. Would have loved to have seen something by Cliff Chiang, Gail Simone and Brian Azzarello in here too.
This special was really disappointing, they really seem to struggle to do Wonder Woman justice with boring stories that fail to focus on what makes her interesting. At least the cover’s cool, I guess 😂
Not crazy about this anniversary book. The art is great and the stories are just fine. It's just weird that there's so many absences through this celebration: neither Donna Troy or Cassie (the disrespect to her character is just offensive to me at this point) are here. Her villains mostly just appear through cameos, even Ares doesn't show up. Her villains really need some attention soon, still don't get how one of the trinity suffers from such a lack of interesting foes. Important authors to her ain't here such as Gail Simone or Greg Rucka, slots for them to write something would have produced stories better than the ones here for sure.
Not a disaster but it didn't amuse me at all.
