This Year Will Be Different by Dominique Bertolucci Audible audition narrated by the author herself. I enjoyed listening to Dominique's voice, which happens to be an ex-model; it always feels as if the author is speaking personally to you, reading to you. Her motivation book gives readers a thoughtful recommendation on how to give what is the best of you, not what is left of you. Add 10% to your activities to enjoy your life. And most important, find a balance in life.
This was a light and fast audiobook, full of simple and concise advices, narrated beautifully by the author. Nothing i have not heard of before, still it is good to hear it again. I stick to this mind setting: “Give those who matter to you the best of you not what is left of you”
This book was just what I needed to hear. It’s pretty much on point with how I live my life and I needed that reminder.
The author gives you techniques on how to change up the way you go about your life. If you’ve already been on a personal development journey, this book will serve as a great reminder.
She doesn’t go into the nitty gritty details on how to implement said tactics, she only scratches the surface, so to speak. But like I said, if you’re more or less experienced in the things she does cover, then this book is great as a boost, a reminder, a refresher. If you are just starting off on your journey, this book is a great first step, but do know you will probably need more info on HOW to actually do the things she mentions.
It was just ok. It's all stuff you have probably heard before. Seemed a bit redundant and I almost didn't finish it. I pushed through and I couldn't repeat anything I learned in this book as it wasn't memorable. Meh.
Reflections and lessons learned: “There is power in your intention…”
I started 2022 with a book by Bertolucci for the same January, start of the year good intentions reasons. I might have listened to this too much whilst multitasking/falling asleep from the backend of flu, as I didn’t feel as inspired as from the other title. It did still fill me with lovely inspirational thoughts though for what I need to do in order to make that change and be the person I want to be (shout it loud my imaginary sports viewing - PMA!!!!!)
This was a concise and wonderful reset of perspective. There is nothing I had not heard before just lots of good advice that I needed to hear again! It was definitely worth the 2.5 hours of listening!
I listened to this short Audible Originals audiobook while doing some much needed spring weeding on a sunny Sunday afternoon. I had previously ear-read one of her other books, and like her friendly Australian delivery and simple pragmatic advice, but as with that one, didn’t feel this brought anything new - in fact if I had read that review beforehand, I might not have bothered - this is very much more of the same.
Divided into eight 20-30 minute chapters, this describes the mindset changes needed to overhaul your life. I did like the concept that you don’t have to wait for New Year to begin anew - you can start anytime - obvious really but we’re so conditioned to think in terms of all or nothing résolutions that it’s not surprising most people fail. Making a distinction between dreams and fantasies, in terms of what you want from life, is another simple but under-acknowledged suggestion.
Like most personal development books, this suggests working out your priorities then tackling the common obstacles to meaningful change - the internet & social media are one of the biggest. Be kind to yourself, but accept that failure is part of life, so get it over with quicker. Be firm but honest with people making demands on your time, but prioritise time with the people that matter. I had a light-bulb moment when I realised that I don’t need to change my life - I needed books like this about ten years ago, then perhaps it wouldn’t have taken so long to get to my big career change seven years ago. It doesn’t hurt to have reminders though for when times aren’t as good as they are currently.
This one didn’t have so many personal anecdotes, which was a plus as I’m not a fan of all the smug “I did it so you can too” exhortations common to this genre -she’s a little more self-deprecating in this one. This was free with my subscription so nothing was wasted - and our BBQ area now looks great 😎 but I would still recommend this mostly to those who haven’t read or listened to this sort of thing before.
This is a straightforward inspirational meets strategy read on changing the status quo and walking down the path that you choose. It invites you to embrace the analogy that .. nothing changes unless something changes .. and that no matter what is happening in the world around us, that the one thing we have the ability to change.. is us 🙌 The whole point is to stop living life on repeat and recreate the life that you choose by design. It is broken down into 8 subparts and requires the reader to think broadly and focus on intentions moving forward. It is a mindset shift towards living your best year yet.. so ditch the usual resolutions and dive on in! It starts with you! . My thoughts 💭 This was such a motivating, feel good and get up and about it listen! It made me wanna stand up and give 2024 a big warm hug to let it know I’m here and I’m ready! It would be a valuable listen anytime of the year in all honesty but I am super grateful I made it my second read for the year as the timing for me was perfect! . Domonique not only has a way with words but she expresses them in such a way too! She has a voice that gets your attention and makes you want to take note and listen. It’s encouraging in nature and relatable to the everyday individual making it feel that little changes can be big wins and are within reach and achievable. The recipe ingredients for success. . Some of my fav dot point take aways are: -be present. Slow down. And switch off. The only moment that truly counts is the one you’re living right now. Give 100% attention to what you are doing. -look for joy, and find it in the everyday. If it makes your heart sing - don’t apologise for it! Shift away from energy that feels bad and set time limits on how long you plan to tolerate certain situations. -focus on what matters. Do something for you. Schedule quality time with loved ones, even give it a name. Your loved ones don’t belong on the bottom of your to do list! Don’t let them fall off your radar. The people you love and who love you will be a lifelong source of happiness. Don’t wait until the end of life to give them your attention. -choose to be optimistic. This doesn’t mean you are blind to reality. It means you are actively looking for the positive. Believe in yourself and in your ability. Be inspired and uplifted, not stressed out and inadequate. Know that if it doesn’t matter in 10 years, it really doesn’t matter now either. -do more to do less. Create more balance and quit multitasking. Stop doing perfect. Choose where to give your best and most of all.. don’t compete. Your best will look different to others and that’s ok. Be selfist not selfish. Don’t let life dominate, rushing is exhausting. Love a list, schedule it in and manage your energy. -express your gratitude. Speak your mind. Thank yourself and thank others. Focus on the things going well and all that you have. Focusing on what you don’t expands. -find your courage and be more honest. Be brave enough to say no to what you don’t want. Own your envy and except your fears. Don’t self sabotage. Fail faster and ask for what you need. Step outside your comfort zone and embrace the lesson. People’s criticism is about them, not you. -commit to yourself, be responsible and work on this mindset. The more successful you feel the more successful you become. Learn to get out of your own way.. and understand the differences between your reasons and your excuses. Don’t create obstacles and face your fears head on -live with intention and let that guide you. Stop being busy. It isn’t productivity. People aren’t mindreaders. You need to ask to receive. There is nothing wrong with wanting more. Ask for it. Don’t wait for permission.. you’re already are granted to shine brightly. . Reading these back gets the fire in my belly simmering. This is my second Domonique listen and I now am on the lookout for both The Happiness Code and The Kindness Pact. Life truly is a blessing and loving the life you live with all your heart is living a life that’s on purpose. Highly recommend this read and I have saved it as a Re listen for 2025. There is nothing like a positive pep talk to set you on the right path forward. . What will you do to make this your best year yet?
Have been dreading finishing this book cause I can relate to everything and makes me want to be a better person and have a better year than the previous years. Will definitely be re-reading this one for a number of times!!!! A must read for everyone.
Like a great many books popular each December and January, Dominique Bertolucci's book provides insight and guides for creating a new vision of self and then tips for actualizing that self. I recommend taking this chapter by chapter, lesson by lesson, and bit by bit. Most likely, these will neither shock nor rock you, but there is a shift within these pages from trying to take on every external goal to affirming what we each genuinely want. My favorite bits of advice from this particular book are "You don't have to wait for January 1st for a new year," "Fail faster," and "Stop being so busy." No glittering promises are made. No lectures about discipline are presented non-stop, but firm and gentle encouragement for self-advocacy takes its place. Think about your life in a new way. Enjoy the process.
With in the first 5 minutes of telling you how she is going to help you be happier and start your new year, new you whenever you want she highlights “Like me and my goal to give up peanut butter.”
Ma’am this is not a book about happiness and I no longer want your advice! I can’t wait for the day when the self help category STOPS spewing diet culture. <3 XOXOXO
This was such an interesting read in that it didn't swerve away from the topic and ideas it wanted its readers to obtain.
Straight to the point, This Year Will Be Different is a fantastic nonfiction book that will remind you that it's all about proper mindset and a good outlook in life.
I really enjoyed this one. If you're looking for a short read that is inspirational and can help in you in setting a better mindset, then this is a good pick.
A good book to get in the right mind space for the new year.
Some of the things she talks about are pretty “obvious” or self explanatory or things you’ve probably heard before, but have you ACTUALLY practiced them? She makes a lot of good points and ultimately reminds us that nothing changes unless something changes, and change starts with YOU and your mindset. Good thoughts lead to good feelings lead to good progress.
It is what it is for such a short audiobook, but I will say due to the concise nature of it, Bertolucci gets straight to it with quite a lot of practical tips but nothing super surprising. I do like what she says about giving those who matter, yourself included, “The best of you, not what’s left of you.” so I suppose I’ll take that into 2022 :)
So this book was not ground breaking. However, there is something soothing to me about hearing some affirmation for how to accomplish goals. Starting a new job this year (my second job as an adult) really causes you to reflect.
A basic guide to have a “better life”. This seemed more like a scripted conference of a motivational coach. I would’ve love to hear more personal insight about each point that was given in the book but it was just a rant of positive cliche phrases.
This book doesn’t teach you anything new or revolutionary but it tells you the things you need to hear now and again. And it tells you in a nice (Australian) voice, strict but not aggressive.
I listened to the 2 1/2 hrs audiobook whilst cleaning and organising my house. Getting ready for a new year!
With my 2023 not off to a great start, I thought I would give this audible original a listen. Really insightful, it’s given me some actionable points to take on board.
Concise, well written and a good pace of ideas. There was not as much that was completely revolutionary as much a good explanation of a bunch of things you have probably heard.
The structure is good and the ideas are not too heavily overlaid with personal stories or unrelateable examples. Definitely recommend. I would like to read more by this author on topics that are a bit newer to me rather than familiar content.
I loved this! The information isn’t anything new, but Domonique presents it in a lively, easy-to-achieve way. It was a great little boost! I recommend to anyone looking for some motivation
I really enjoy audiobooks that are narrated by the authors themselves because you get the proper exposure to how the author wants to carry over the message they are giving to the public as well as placing the right emotions in the right places.
While many of these ideas shared by the author are basically the repetitions of other similar books, towards the end I realised that each book based on these concepts is basically the same, it’s just all about how the message is relayed and in what manner. The topics were the same and so were the solutions to getting things done.
Overall, the narration was calm and creative, leaving a trail of fresh air to absorb.
