They say power corrupts the soul. Sometimes you take the risk. I was just a cop on my beat when the world ended. My last memory was of an alien death ray ripping me from existence. When I woke up in a strange world, I should have just laid low. Figured out the rules of this place before I got involved. But when you see a woman running from slavers. Well… let’s just say they got what they deserved. Only problem is that makes enemies—demigods with the power to bind the magically gifted women of Timeria to their will. I can stop them, with powers bestowed by a god. But they come with a catch. I must bind these women, the Chosen, to my very soul. Just like the Demigods I want to stop.
I liked this book a lot. I read loads of not great stuff from Kindle Unlimited and when something rises above I feel the need to write a review.
Dialogue was good. I enjoyed the conversations between the MC and Tyla. I thought their relationship developed pretty well.
Action was good. I was able to follow along with the combat and everyone's moves made sense.
Plot also made sense. MC made good decisions and wasn't overly "whoa is me, I'm such a fish out of water" that pops up a lot in these Isekai stories. I also was a fan of the MC not being a giant pushover and constantly questioning things.
My only quibble was with the chapters covering things from the Big Bad's perspective. I understand you need to "show not tell" how evil the guy is but I skipped ahead a couple times as I was not super interested in his conquests.
This one worked pretty well. Setting is in the future on earth. Aliens show up and take the MC away to another world. He wakes up in another body on another world. In this world the women are "chosen" also known as magic users. Until recently men have not been able to use magic. Now there are demigods on the world who are causing all sorts of problems. These men bond with the women and get their powers. They also get complete control over them, in every way. Pretty standard erotica except this author took the time to come up with.a reason for this situation. The aliens that stole the MC are now immortal. They weren't always. They had a caste system and when they all became immortal they no longer had the physical needs. They didn't need to eat, sleep, f**k, nothing. That didn't mean they didn't still have the mental desire though. Since nobody dies anymore, nobody could move up in society which made people very lazy and arrogant. The world the MC is on is for entertainment. Those aliens can come down to this world and have those pleasures again. Less rules, etc. There is some danger so only the dregs of the society volunteered for this. If it goes well, then more worlds will open up. The aliens feel all other races are lesser and they can do anything they want. There are two different factions of aliens. The ones that want this entertainment to continue and the much smaller one that brought the MC to this world. This alien faction feels that their species is doomed if they don't make changes. What is the point of living if you cant have children, or do anything new in society. Every day is the same over and over again. The MC is human but was given the power of demigod. This means when he sex with a woman she is bonded to him. He is a typical white knight male protagonist and doesn't want to take advantage of this. So he treats his women completely different than the demigods by showing them love and respect. He also shares his power and doesn't take all their power for himself. Overall a good start to the series.
Overall I liked this, but the MC failing to adapt to the reality of his situation always puts me off a bit. The idea that "no means no" has penetrated pretty well, but the idea that women can know what they want even if the MC is too sensitive for it doesn't seem to have the same uptake in a lot of these books. Minor spoilers follow.
Women like power too. The bad guy recognizes this and exploits it (as well as the raping and extortion which make him the bad guy), but our "hero" is too busy being self-righteously pissed about being isekai-ed. His extreme reluctance to bond willing women in these circumstances puts him at a huge disadvantage, and more importantly puts everyone who doesn't want to live under an evil mind-controlling asshole at unnecessary risk. That seems to be the plot, so we're stuck with it, but it's tiresome to read him trying to put off women who want what he's got. Being discriminating about who he accepts is sensible, but this takes it too far.
As a first book for a new author, this is well done. The story is well done, but needs a bit more time to flush out the details of the what is really going on. This isn't a bad thing, but don't expect to have the entire story flushed out in chapter 1. Our MC is a very straight-laced guy, but he'll need to start loosening his moral compass a bit to succeed. Enjoyable story and looking forward to more.
The MC was a former Marine and an active cop when the future Earth came to an end via alien obliteration. He wakes up in a human body considerably younger than he was, with no idea where he is or what is going on. He is soon attacked by a direwolf that he defeats, and then he rescues a woman who is fleeing slavers of some sort. And thus begins his adventures as a pawn in some alien's game. He's a bit of a white knight, which is apparently candy to the women he meets.
The MC has two harem members by the end of the book, and has meet the third. And while they are different, not much effort goes into relationship building. Attraction leads to sex, which allows the woman to choose whether or not to permanently bind herself to the MC. Both choose yes, and thus they are now a part of his harem.
I am interested to see where this goes. I have read a few "alien experiment" style books, and they can be interesting for a while and then go off the rails, so we'll see.
So, in a genre done to death the author at least set some things up in a creative way. The way MC was brought to the world was a less often done way. Magic system is more unique. The way bonding works... very.. not good morally. But at least the MC goes to great lengths to point this out and try to make it as non creepy as possible? Smut is only in depth when dramatically appropriate, which is good because of it was expanded everywhere it came up the pacing would suffer And it did take a bit to get into this, but sure if pacing, or maybe because while the women aren't paper, they aren't fleshed out.. yet? Maybe book 2 week help. If mind control R isn't a squick/deal breaker for you, could give it a try. If it is, hard pass. There were just enough bad editing errors to lower it to 3 stars but I'm a little harsh about that. It's 3.5
Interesting characters and good world building. The aliens/demigods need some more background to help build the backstory. Society on the decline, casting off all restraint and the most depraved members cutting loose. The antagonist, Stein comes across as a real Jack-wad, which makes it easy to hate every depraved thing that he stands for. As the author says this is his first effort, l'm impressed and looking forward to seeing more from him. I am relieved that video-game interfaces displaying character's stats are absent as l think they are being overused in the genre. All said, this was an enjoyable dtory and lm going to dive right into the next book.
I had this for a few months. I will just finish it off as quick as possible.
The smut aside, this wasn't too bad. I don't know if it's good enough to warrant a reading of book two, but it's not absolute horrible.
The same "gotta have dem all" pokemon chase in novel form (with women being the pokemon. The more "pokemon" the protagonist has, the more powerful he gets. All his power lies with his women.) Meh.
First I honestly couldn't put this story down till I had read it through!!! It really is that good!!! Excellent editing and all around wonderful story!!! Excellent world building, dynamic characters and excellent adult fantasy activities!!! This has the potential to be a long and wonderful series!!!!
Rather a nice set-up for a harem novel. I did find the MC's backstory to be interesting. He seemed to be a lot more of an Alpha guy on earth. And the book loses a star do to the epilogue. Nobody is happy, nobody is safe, and we are not taking a collective breath.
Too much mind control and since mine control seems to the main plot, while I enjoyed certain parts the fact that everyone are zombies made me not invested in the story
Excellent story and has a very fast pace. The action never stops once I started reading it I could not put it down. The sex actually made went with the story and not just filler. I can not wait to start the second book now! ENJOY!
Could be a decent story, but it tries waay too hard and it really means in to that "man with a dark past" BS.... Has those conflicting war vet hero meets puritan/conservative vibes too.
Omg. I was not expecting this to be so good. I got this on KU expecting a run of the mill book by a new author. This was so good. It has depth and an amazing magic system. Not a cookie cutter light novel. I can see this being a 10 book series with how deep the world is.
A twist on the man out of place idea. Derk is part of a catastrophic event, sent to another world, part of a godlike aliens plans. Good action, adventure and the right amount of spice. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I like this writer Patrick Underwood I just read his first book and I'm looking forward 2 the next one. Is already out so I don't have to worry about it. The only thing I would could improve would be the length of his books. Hope to see many more.
Some books take more attention than others, and this is one of those! If time is taken to really read and understand what the author is conveying, it's a very good book.
I don’t like how the MC keeps second guessing himself regarding his companions but everything else is good. Well written with characters that have their own motivations and an intersting premise to the world.
It’s a good example of the genre and well worth a read.
This is simply put probably one of the worst, most atrocious pieces of literature on the market. It is full of rape and overall just really creepy. The author should be ashamed.
What happens when you Isekai to a world and have to save the inhabitants by binding women to superpowers to your harem through intercourse ? Wild spicy madness! A funny Stratton the series, loving Derek’s moral compass and always trying to do what is right
I enjoyed this book, I have been reading more of Mr. Underwood’s stories, and I like how he develops the characters. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Well written and captivating. Delightfully erotic but secondary to a well conceived storyline. The two different erotic approaches complement the other.
This is a good book. You shouldy read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The book is a good read. i enjoyed it alot.. Download or buy it today. why not?
