I have a crush… Well, two, really. One is a guy I met online, who I’ll never work up the guts to meet in real life. And the other? That’s a long story…
My life feels like it’s falling apart at the seams—I’m broke, my restaurant is on the verge of failure, and my brother’s best friend just moved back to town.
Okay, so maybe Brooks Callahan’s return isn’t a life-ending event, but it sure feels like it. Eight years ago, he told me he wanted me. He was just a kid, and honestly, so was I. When I tried to let him down gently, he lashed out, his awful words scarring me in ways they never should have.
Now Brooks is the only one who can help me, and I have to find a way to put our issues to bed. Metaphorically, not literally. That would be ridiculous, right? Of course, it would.
Maybe I’ll ask the guy I’ve crushed on for months…my online friend whose posts always seem to reverberate in my soul. Whose messages make me laugh. Think. Feel.
Piper James lives in Idaho with her husband, two teenage sons, two cats, and a dog.
Her favorite things are romance novels, coffee, potato chips, and her Jeep Wrangler…and her family, of course. Seriously. She loves her family more than coffee and her jeep. *exaggerated wink*
When she’s not writing, she watches ghost shows and spends most of her time trying to convince her family their house is haunted. Because it is.
She wrote YA paranormal romance for 6 years under the name Wendi Wilson before giving into her desire to write spicy romcoms, and it was the best career decision she’s ever made…until she decides to write a book about the ghosts. Because they are definitely real.
──★ ˙2.5 Just what I excepted cringed at some points 🤷♀️ So ima just go overall about this , no long review coming so yeah.
This was just what I needed it to be , nothing exciting naur captivity, just something to read quickly and to skip time , cringe at parts and fast paced nothing interesting at others.
Tbh it was that fats because all the drama and fights needed based on either the kiss problem or the miscommunication or the overthinking , yes she was insecure of herself but it didn't really go deep and we didn't have any character growth or devlopement . And really all their relationship ( that's is after they somehow managed to get together and forget their miscommunication shit ) was based on smut and him telling her he loved her OR him messing up and trying to make it up for her and messing up again until Missy forgives him 🥲
i think my favourite thing about this is that it’s super fast paced & it’s a great book to read if you love romance & you’re in a reading slump.
i do have to be honest though everything was very surfaced level, the fights were based on miscommunications & overthinking, nothing about the story really dove down deep & i think that’s what made it easy to fly through, but also didn’t make me feel connected to anything about it. it was kinda forgettable.
I loved this book so much! Winnie is a plus sized queen that deserves all the love and affection and is getting none. Brooks is a lovesick man who is still smarting from his rejection from Winnie when they were just kids. Enter one meddling brother, one best friend, and a little social media and it all adds up for some serious spice. This is by far one of my favorite stories of all time and I will be telling everyone. Don't miss out on the fun! Get this book!
I liked the writing in this book but I had an issue with all the tropes. Personally I normally don’t have an issue with this but I guess it was the combination of almost instant love and how quick the two main mc’s relationship was progressing that turned me off a bit. That being said, this book was still enjoyable, and fun to read. It’s definitely worth it if you just need something to get you though you day that is light hearted and doesn’t have too much conflict.
Once again Piper James had blow me away. I was honor receiving this book as a arc. The charters and the story line was amazing. Makes you think as well. Trying to confuse something and totally trundle right back on you ? Winnie and Brooks haves know each other whole lives. Well you want to know more guess what you got to read it and find out.
This book was rough. Maybe I shouldn’t keep trying to read lighter romance books, but I can appreciate when a book is good but just not my style. I don’t think anyone should think this is good. I should have DNF’d it 30 pages in when the idea that the FMC at 19 would take to heart what a 16 year old said to her out of anger at being rejected, and let it still shape her view of herself 8 years later! Huge eye roll.
The social media chatter thing was cute and Fox and Harper seem like they’d be much better characters in their books.
But the MCs here were so cheesy and OTT. The dialogue started off fine but got went steadily downhill. What’s worse is that the author attempted to make this steamy ( and I love smut) but it felt so wrong here. I seriously skimmed past and I never do that.
Giving 2 stars only because the writing isn’t terrible but the plot and execution were.
This author never misses with any of her contemporary romance books! This standalone had sweetness, spice, and misunderstandings that added just the right amount of angst to the plot. Its dual POVs gave readers great insight into the main characters and was the perfect choice to highlight their willingness to make their relationship work. Though it was a quick read, it was full of great world building and was a fantastic opener to this series of standalones.
With her mind focused on keeping her business afloat, twenty seven year old Winnie can’t afford any distractions—especially not the arrival of her brother’s best friend who’s still able to set her body aflame even after years spent apart. Now all grown up at twenty four with a new job keeping him permanently back in town, Brooks is as gorgeous and off-limits as ever, but with the memory of his parting words to her all those years ago, Winnie vows to avoid him as best she can. When she can’t seem to keep Brooks out of her orbit both personally and professionally, however, Winnie has no choice but to hear out his side of things, leading to revelations that shock them both. With the support of an online friend who, oddly enough, is also in the process of rekindling an old flame, Winnie needs to decide if she’ll let Brooks slip through her fingers again or if she’ll go for what she’s always wanted.
I loved the main couple in this book! Their relationship was complicated at first, but was super sweet once everything settled. I think the dual POVs were a fantastic choice to showcase the characters’ feelings and devotion to the other, and it really highlighted their determination to make their relationship work. Like the book as a whole, the spice was well written and while it was an important part of the story, it wasn’t used as a crutch.
I also really liked the introduction to the main group of characters in this book! Though only two were actually related, the whole group had a close bond that was funny and caring at the same time. I can’t wait to read about the others in their own standalone books and hopefully see more glimpses into the future of Winnie and Brooks as the series progresses.
Though this is a brother’s best friend romance, I was happy there was no tension between the three of them to deal with (it would’ve been fine if there was; it’s just nice to see a brother accept the happiness of his bestie and sister without having to be convinced first.) I was also happy to find that even with the small crush both Winnie and Brooks had on their online friends, there was no emotional cheating going on. I was worried the plot would go in a more guilty love-square direction, but thankfully that wasn’t the case.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this standalone romance book and will definitely be reading the rest of the series!
When Brooks Callahan comes back to Winnie's town after years away, things change for her. Her brother's best friend is nothing like the sixteen-year-old boy who had a crush on her - he's now a man, and an attractive one at that. With her restaurant on the verge of failure, his returns brings back memories of the awful words Brooks told her all those years ago. Words that she's carried with her all these years. But now that she sees the new him, she can't help but be curious. Although she can't quite forget the internet crush she's had for years, a stranger who makes her laugh, smile, feel...
This book was truly a gem! It was really addictive and I couldn't put it down. The pace was absolutely perfect for a romance novel: the characters had time to build a connection, but I was never bored. Our two protagonists were quite interesting. I liked that they had their own lives and still collided with one another and stayed together. It was natural and absolutely adorable. The spice was just perfect and gave me goosebumps several times. It was both hot and sweet and perfectly balanced with the rest of the story. The secondary plot with the online relationship was also really entertaining and original and it had me laughing out loud at times. The writing was addictive and on point as well, and each of the characters had their own voice. I really liked the plot twists that felt natural and not heavy and annoying like they can be in romance stories. There was something incredibly natural and relatable about this story that had my heart fluttering with excitement. I couldn't put the book down! I'm very excited to read the next book in this series and see who it's about!
I highly recommand if you want a spicy, fun romance!
"I'm a firm believer that things always work out the way they're supposed to."
“I Wanted It To Be You” by Piper James follows Brooks and Winnie who have known each other from such a young age. Brooks has been in love with Winnie since they were children, where as Winnie never payed any attention to Brooks because of their 3 year age gap and the fact that she was his brothers best friend (Fox). Fast forward to when Brooks was 14 years old and Winnie was 17 he confronted Winnie about how he felt only to be rejected, causing him to avoid her for years until Fox brings him back to their small town.
This was my first book by Piper James that I have read. It was a dual pov, very fast read. Overall, the book wasn’t bad but to me I felt as though it was very predictable. Brooks was very likeable and I felt that he grew throughout the book. However, the other main character, Winnie, often got upset which made little conflicts appear to be that much bigger. The main cause of the public was due to miscommunications from both of the main characters which was quickly resolved through sex.

Have you ever confessed your feelings for someone, only to have it backfire on you? Well this is what happened to Brooks. He told his best friend's sister, Winnie, exactly how he felt about her, and then he kissed her. But everything didn't go how he wanted, so he kept his distance from her. Well, we pick up years later, and now he's back in town, and he has to be around Winnie, he has to see her every day, especially since he's still friends with her brother. One thing that also hasn't changed? The way that he feels about her.
I enjoyed this book from the beginning. Piper did an amazing job laying out the story for us, and we were able to see into their relationship, see how their feelings for each other have progressed over the years. Brooks and Winnie were adorable together, and I loved their banter between each other. I also really enjoyed the side characters that were in this book, as I felt that they really added to the story well.
Winnie and Brooks have known each other their whole lives and Brooks has loved Winnie, his best friends big sister, since he was 13. At 16, Brooks decides to shoot his shot and misses horribly. Winnie and Brooks are also “online friends” but don’t know they are speaking to each other. *** I liked Winnie and Brooks. They have great chemistry both in person and in their online personas. The spice was great and Brooks was so smitten with Winnie that it was really adorable. Once he knew that he contributed to Winnie’s poor self image, he worked to help her overcome those issues. Their relationship seemed a bit idyllic. This felt…more hallmark movie than Rom-com.
My character in this book was Fox (Winnie’s brother/Brooks’ best friend). He was funny and exciting and I’m looking forward to his story.
Her books never disappoint. The feeling of starting this book and being fully pulled into this series without a second doubt.
Oh at how they have miscommunication as teens and hurtful things get said that aren't meant. Let 8 yrs pass and they see each other again. Winnie notices that she has had some feelings from that night she never dealt with. Feelings of her actually enjoying the kiss and never saying anything. Feelings of unwant because of what was said to her. That they will never really want her for her.
Brooks is a whole other ball game. Goodness does he appear to be the perfect all confident dream man. But then you start to see how he really is and how he still is tied up in old feelings. How he refused to even think that they effected him. To think that he was past it. Little did he know all it took was one look to ruin that wall.
I was extremely happy to be able to read another book by the fabulous Piper James. I Wanted it to Be You took me back to that place of first loves and second chances that only an amazing romance novel can do. The characters practically leapt off the page in their relatability and I found myself connected with them and the story from the first chapter.
I love a good second chance romance, and I loved even better that it combined that with a best friend's sister, AND a plus sized woman. This was just an all around good story, a great romance and an un-put-down-able book!
I think that the addition of the online presence added an adorable side to the story that made it all that much sweeter. I think that contemporary romance readers will truly enjoy this story and be eager to start a brand new series by such an engaging author.
Piper James has done it once again. This was a brilliant swoon-worthy book.
I loved the story between Winnie and Brooks. The siblings best friend trope is one I enjoy, and Piper has written it so well. It's adorable that Brooks managed to capture the heart of the girl he's had a crush on since he was thirteen.
Piper James is one of my go-to romance authors because she effortlessly writes such brilliant romances with enough steam to keep us happy.
I will forever cherish being on her arc team and reading these books early because I am in love with her small-town romances.
I can't wait to read Mila and Fox's story!
*I received an arc in exchange for a review. All thoughts and feelings are my own.*
Lovely book to start off this new series. Winnie and Brooks grew up together and spent a lot of time around each other as kids, thanks to Brooks’ friendship with Winnie’s brother, Fox. Brooks gets his heart broken when he reveals his feelings to Winnie and after being turned down, he retaliates by trying to hurt her feelings. Winnie spends the next several a years avoiding Brooks and constantly questioning her desirability while replying Brooks words in her head. Brooks moves back to town and eventually the air is cleared making way for their new relationship to bloom. A few bumps along the way, but they get their HEA.
Piper James is magic when it comes to giving us what we want in romance!!
8years ago Brooks confessed his love to his best friends sister and she rejected him hard. His response was to hurt her the same way he felt and his words would shape Winnies future and body confidence from that day forward.
Now Brooks is back in town and Winnie has to face the fact that his kiss all those years ago sparked something in her she hadn't felt before... or since.. but his words cut deep and she's still angry.
This friends to enemies to lovers will keep you reading like all of Piper James's books
This book was simply very addictive. I sat down and read the whole book in one sitting easily. I enjoyed the fact that the characters were very relatable, especially Winnie being a fantastic plus size queen who runs her own business. Brooks fit very well with the typical boy next door/ brothers best friend trope but he also had a personality beyond just his friendship with Winnie's brother. I enjoyed the fast pace of the book but at times it can make you want to scream at both Winnie and Brooks when they do not realize who their internet bestie is. Overall it was a very enjoyable book and I look forward to reading the next two books in this series.
I really enjoyed the author's take of the brother's best friend and the second chance tropes. Like her other works, Papa puts in a lot of thought into her characters and make some relatable and realistic. I got sucked into the story and wanted to read more! I really enjoyed the way Piper also included her side characters and allowed the side characters story to develop without causing an issue with a main storyline. I 100% enjoyed reading this and I want to read more! I will be continuing on to the next book and thankful that it is already out. I really enjoyed the pacing and the twist that happened within the book.
So this was my first book by Piper James and I throughly enjoyed it!! I read it in one sitting. It's characters Brooks and Winnie was very relatable and you fall in love with both of them. I love the dual pov's so you actually get into both if their minds and know what is going on. And how it goes back and let's you know how it all started out. The secondary characters are awesome and really bring some extra flavor to the entire book. I actually came across book 2 on tiktok but decided I was going to start at book 1 and am glad I did. Because from what it seems these are stand alone but seem like they are just better read together in order. I would definitely recommend this book.

Piper James has been one of my favorite one-click authors since I discovered her Milestone Mischief series and then binge read every book in just a matter of days. I loved reading Winnie and Brooks story. This is a brothers best friend with a twist story. Years of secret pining/love, a broken heart, cruel words spoken from pain, years of insecurity from what was said. After 8 years they are finally able to clear the air and even with a few misunderstandings they find their HEA. I can't wait to read Fox and Mila's story.
I Wanted It To Be You is a sweet story of a small town, brother’s best friend, second chance romance. I loved the twist that Winnie was the older sister and that in their first time around she had turned Brooks down.
Brooks has returned to town years later and is alll grown up and Winnie is not the only one to notice, but he really is the *almost* perfect H throughout. Can they both get past their insecurities and find their way to a second chance? Or should they explore online love interests? Read on to find out and you won’t be disappointed.
Loved this book! The characters where great. I loved the story line. When ur young sometimes things dont go as you plan them. especially if your telling a girl you like her. This is what happened to brooks. He told his dream girl, his childhood crush, Winnie, he liked her and she turned him down. This was in hish school. Now that they are adults Brooks has come back to town and Winnies restaurant is not doing so well. Welp, just guess who is tasked with helping her with the restaurant? Yep Brooks. Read how that goes!
Winnie is his best friends older sister, whom Brooks has been in love with since age 13. He confesses his love to her before she leaves for college - doesn’t go to plan. 8 years later, Brooks, now 24, moves back to his small hometown and he wants to make things right with Winnie, now 27.
There not a lot I can say about this book. It was a VERY surface level romance. The story was short & cute. The perfect book to read to get out of a book slump.
Imagine crushing hard on your best friends older sister and imagine getting the nerve to kiss her before she leaves for college only to have her reject you... Brooks has lived with regret for 8 years Winnie is the woman who turned Brooks down but not for the reason he thinks and she too has been hanging onto her feelings on what that kiss meant to her , imagine her surprise when he moved back to their hometown Will they discuss what happened all those years ago or pretend it never happened?

This book was so cute and happiness inducing. Winnie's and Brooks' love was fated to be ♡♡ their story was fresh and exciting! And let's not forget hot AF! As per usual with Piper James. She sure knows how to write a book! Especially the spicy scenes!
This is the start of a new series with all new characters and I love them all! I'm sad to say goodbye to the ones from the precious world, but I'm excited to learn about and fall in love with all of them haha.
Piper James is absolutely a one click author, and this time is no different! A new series for us to fall for, and I can’t wait!
This is a new twist on brother’s best friend. Younger brother. Teenage hormones that react badly. A second chance at friendship and maybe more after 8 years apart.
The steam is high, and just right. The story is wonderfully written, and all the side characters are love-able. Another great story from Piper!
A great age gap, brother’s best friend, steamy rom-com. We meet Winnie and Brooks as he tries to navigate coming back home to their small town and facing the “one that got away.” Or in this case, more like the “one he pushed away because he was being a teenaged jerk.”
This book is fun, flirty and steamy with some great banter (which I really like). I totally love that Winnie is a curvy girl as well.
Winnie and Brooks are just DREAM love story. They are cute and sweet and if you don't fall for Brooks the minute that his 16-year-old self shoots his shot, you are missing out. We all want the boy who loves us in high school to go for it, but they rarely do. I was cheering for these two lovebirds from the jump, and Piper James did NOT disappoint when it came to tying them together. And the spice... chef's kiss!!! Yes!!! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!
