Insomniacs After School is a manga series by Makoto Ojiro. It is about two high school students, Ganta Nakami and Isaki Magari, who suffer from insomnia and find solace in each other’s company at the school’s abandoned observatory.

The latest chapters of Insomniacs After School continue to explore the relationship between Ganta and Isaki, who have confessed their feelings for each other and started dating. However, their romance is not without challenges, as they have to deal with their respective health issues, family problems, and academic pressures. The manga does a great job of balancing the sweet and tender moments between the couple with the realistic and serious issues they face. The art style is simple but expressive, conveying the emotions and personalities of the characters well.

The manga also explores some themes such as life, death, love, dreams, and happiness in a realistic and touching way. I would recommend this manga to anyone who likes romance, drama, slice of life, or astronomy.

Thanks to Viz and Edelweiss for ARC of my favorite ongoing series. Ojiro continues to plot and pace this story in a way that makes it one of the most accessible, approachable, and enjoyable books out right now. This remains an easy recommendation for so many different types of readers and there aren't as many of those books as you'd think. Another slice of school life for our cast of characters, who have surprisingly fewer consequences than you'd expect after the cliff-hanger that was the end of Vol 6. We learn a little more about the protagonists, we see them bond closer together and we see their friends continue to love and support them.

After getting busted on their escapades alone, Ganta and Magari are still closer than ever. But now it’s time for sports day and the chance to boost the astronomy club’s numbers. As long as nothing happens. Oops.

This manga. One of my favourite coming-of-age romances returns, with everything I have learned to both love and dread about it present in equal measure.

As much as this is such a spectacular group of kids to spend time with, full of problems and awkward and realistically terrible ideas, it still has one foot firmly planted in a knowing wisdom of the reality of the real world as well.

There’s still more foreshadowing that Magari is not well. That’s a constant source of tension in this series that I refuse to read ahead and defuse, which will probably give me massive feels at some point.

Her parents getting mad aside, which leads to all sorts of relationship challenges, she also ends up leaving the swim team to help with the astronomy club (either a health move or a young love move, unsure at this time). Then there’s an ominous call from the hospital that seems to go a lot better than her mother’s reaction would imply.

Amidst all this is the fledgling steps of her and Ganta’s relationship. They can’t exactly date, but it’s not like these two aren’t resourceful in that respect, so they have a lot of time together. It’s all very soppy and wonderful. Whatever happens, Magari has changed Ganta so much and it’s kind of wonderful to see.

Their big plan for the sports day race for their club is absolutely hilarious and the realism here is brutally awkward - their idea is exactly what two kids would come up with - but also really, really sweet at the same time. Ganta’s entirely too creative and trying so hard, it’s very cute.

All the regular group is still here and I loved the side focus on Anamizu, the hardcore runner, and her crush on the baseball senpai. That whole digression is full of little touches - the guy in her class picking on her who is so, so obviously into her, for example.

Even though it’s a minor aside, I also liked the club advisor offhandedly tossing out to Ganta and Magari that people like Anamizu fade away in their later teen years. They clearly don’t get it, but the experience of an adult speaks volumes there.

Toss in all the awkwardness and you have a story that truly resonates. There’s a willingness to pull no punches here that’s part of its charm - they really sell a big, big moment at the end of the book before completely ripping the rug out from under it. But that turns into an even better moment because of it, taking us out on a far too corny declaration, but one that the manga can still sell because it knows how a teenager acts.

It’s all so great. There is a believability to the way these characters behave and the way that they interact that puts so many more stylized romances to shame. This is way, way harder to do and probably a large part of why it’s become such a personal classic.

5 stars - on the one hand, a story about very little, but that’s probably the reason it feels like a story about everything.

I love this series - it's light and sweet and doesn't focus solely on the romance between Isaki and Ganta, but also on the club, on the school life... That makes the story more enjoyable for me. Also, in this volume, the other characters come to life a bit more (in particular Anamizu and Haida).

Had a bit to much focus on the side character I find least interesting. Which is fine cause only a portion of the story but it dropped it a star for me. Saying that the ending is adorable, and I'm curious how these two will navigate their relationship now.

Hum, something about this volume didnt feel right. For example that the author uses the illness again as a shock/drama point. And his final thoughts are so over the top cheesy.

Title: Insomniac After School
Author: Makoto Ojiro
Genre: fiction, slice of life, romance, and graphic novel
Volume: 7 of 14
Pages: 192
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The return of Ganta and Isaki to the observatory after the breathtaking fireworks show solidifies its place as one of the top romances anime of the season. This is no small feat, especially considering the abundance of satisfying romance stories this season has offered.
Upon their return, I was personally not expecting to receive such a satisfactory explanation for the grim foreshadowing we were given in the earlier episode regarding Isaki's health. She was born with a heart condition, but thankfully, she claims it is no longer a concern. However, the constant reminder of her body's imperfection causes her great anxiety and contributes to her insomnia. This could also explain why Ganta's steady heartbeat provides her with a sense of security and allows her to sleep peacefully in his presence. I can't help but worry that this detail may resurface in the future and potentially jeopardize their relationship, as I have grown quite attached to this couple.
Ganta's aversion to attending festivals due to their overwhelming effects on him is relatable, even if we have not personally experienced it. This storyline also serves as a reminder that we can never utterly understand someone else's struggles because we all wear different masks and cope with things in our own unique ways. Throughout the show, Ganta and Isaki have been misunderstood and pitied by those around them, so it was heartwarming to see her open and share her personal history with him. And it is even more heartwarming to see Ganta take full responsibility for that knowledge.
It's evident that Ganta wants to be someone Isaki can depend on, as shown through his efforts to find a special and adorable way for them to support each other even when they are apart. This level of commitment and care is truly heart-melting. The directing and imagery at the end of the episode nearly brought me to tears.
In summary, his goal is to be a dependable figure for her, and he goes to great lengths to produce a charming and one-of-a-kind method for them to stay connected, even when they are separated. The direction and visuals in the final scene truly moved me and brought me close to tears.

Bisogna farsi notare in qualche modo.

I have blasted through all the available books in this series in two days so this is a generic, overall (spoiler free) review of the series.

I have never really enjoyed manga preferring books, light novels and anime but the first 2 episodes of this show caught my eye so I decided to try it and I am very glad I did.

I have found the manga to be easy to follow and enjoyable so far (up to book 9).

I was worried this was going to be another story that goes no where and stagnates but I feel fairly confident now in saying this series has a set plot path and destination and there was more story development in the first 4 books than most Japanese media I have read/ seen have in their entire series.
The two MCs are interesting with you learning about them as they learn about each other - what feels mostly natural and a good pace. The story has been really good - exactly what I was hoping for more. The side characters feel like they're actually there and real people and also have their own small plots going on (I find some stories have side characters because they have to but with minimal effort put into them where this is not the case here). The art work is really nice and I've never had an interest in photography before but all of a sudden I find myself wishing my camera phone was a lot more camera: The story draws you in and makes you interested.

There's no fan service, no repetition or bad jokes, the story doesn't feel forced or slowed down (to please the readers or the publishers), the scenes, settings relationships and plot feels realistic and it's all well told and well drawn.
If this series keeps going as well as it is then it could take over as my favourite story in the light novel, anime, manga area for me.
All in all I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest in slice of life/ romance.

This is still just the sweetest series! Initially I thought this volume might just be filler, but as I got into it I my concerns were assuaged and I was really into it! I really enjoyed the preparations for the festival as well as the festival itself, particularly the breakthrough that Ganta has! The last few pages had me bawling! I love everything about this manga and cannot wait for the next volume!

Ganta and Magari must face the consequences of their unsupervised trip, but they're still on cloud nine because they're young and in love and their astrophotography is about to solidify the status of their club.

But there's more than just the Ganta x Magari romance now (which is moving on the the next potentially messy stage) and possibly even more drama on the way as the Astrophotography Club searches for new members.

This series has 14 volumes.
