This is a very, very general book about Autism. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist, and much of the information in the communication sections are simply not accurate. Also, the puzzle piece is not embraced by the Autistic community. Autistic people are not in need of fixing or figuring out..as is implied by the puzzle piece. PLEASE don't spend your time reading this book, spend it with your child!! Olivia Harris doesn't even state her qualifications for writing this book or resources on where she got her information from!!
If you or your child is autistic, please read Uniquely Human, by Barry Prizant. It is am amazing book by a Speech-Language Pathologist who has spent his career learning about Autism and working with and along side autistic individuals.
This book doesn’t go into a lot of depth but what they do cover is easy to understand and explains things on layman’s terms in a way that the reader can understand. It does have a lot of good ideas and helpful information easy to understand.
I appreciated this short book on Autism. My oldest son was recently diagnosed with ASD and we are starting our journey on management. It’s interesting because while reading this book I was able to put my finger on the signs he shows, but also thinking, “It’s not too bad. I can do this.”
My son is so Fricken smart and I think most of the challenges will come from me being scared and not so much anything on his side. This was super insightful and I appreciate having this to look back on for reference when I need it.
This book was my perfect place to start. It's a great overview for understanding all the areas to think of as you begin to parent a child with ASD. It has helped me narrow down which areas I need more education in and provide assurance that there isn't some pit that I've forgot to consider for my child. Yes, areas are shallow but I loved that about it so I could get a useful yet concise overview. Great read!
Finally a book that lays things down simply and practically. Definitely just an introduction, could do with more but I appreciate the simplicity of this book also.
Although there was a lot of interesting and wonderful techniques. I was looking more for ways to help preschool age autistism children to adjust in a classroom setting. Either way there were lots of good information and ideals of ways to help.
Was lost under a couch for a while. It's a very basic primer (only 60 pgs) and too broad to be much help in most cases. It'd be a good intro for grandparents or other relatives maybe.
I found this book to be pretty simple and down to earth. It's very helpful for parents of newly diagnosed children. It is based in the UK. The information would apply to here in the US. I would suggest using it in tandem with doctors, therapist, etc. Contrary to opinion, I wouldn't discount opinion from veteran parents. I've been in the autism world for over 30 years and have some good tips that may or may not work for others. Sorry, but some therapists and doctors are just full of crap. Take it all with a grain of salt. You'll get to know your child. You'll know what works for them, that is the most important thing.
The other most important advice is to never forget that your child's most important label is his/her name, not his diagnosis. The diagnosis helps with funding or services and to plan where to go from there. It doesn't really tell you who your child is. They will still show you who they are.
