And when the one thing that can keep all the survivors alive is going to get everyone killed?

Welcome to the darkest night of the Zulu Alpha, where every loyalty is tested, every moral calculus impossible, and every price paid too costly to be borne. The world's last nuclear supercarrier strike group, and its exhausted Marine Raider guardians, must now range from the coast of fallen America, to an unavoidable date with destiny at the farthest northern point of Australia, to the enclosed and exploding death zone of the world's largest offshore oil field – knowing that everywhere, at all times, absolutely everything will be on the line.

Tom "Yaz" Yaskiewicz, Team SARC for the MARSOC Marines aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS John F Kennedy. The JFK and its 7 support ships in the last surviving carrier group carried the last known American survivors of the zombie plague. The JFK contingent desperately needed fuel for the support ships and filters for the JFK's desalination plant which supplied the 210,000 gallons of water the they needed every day or the entire group would be dead in less than a week. Not good. Not good at all!

The amazing characters from the Arisen series and the story of their survival during the zombie apocalypse is a page-burning sequence of fight and flight. Great action scenes interspersed with the wisdom of Master Guns Fick kept me alternately chuckling, rolling on the floor laughing, and tense with adrenaline fueled anxiety waiting for massive body counts. Now I can't wait for the next book in this series! This is a great read!

While gunny Ficks has his shinning moments of poetic genius, you know the ones I’m talking about, Fuch’s has, in my mind, outplayed this trope of Yaz’s insecurity and inability to fit in. The themes of love, brotherhood, and duty that are central to both the arisen and raiders series were on full display but missing the interpersonal relationships and banter that made arisen such a legendary series for me. Maybe its just a symptom of such a long series (not helped by my many rereads of the previous books) but this book felt a bit of a rinse and repeat of the same old problems for our beloved characters.

While not as good as the early books, its still a pretty compelling story once you get past the, “It was love. it was love all along” epiphany which the characters insist on having during each gunfight.

Man, will a mission ever go right for these guys?

No mat tee what they do, stuff goes wrong and things blow up. And it all believable and well written.

I have been reading the Arisen series for almost 8 years, I have read them all, and still not tired of them. They have great characters, valid premises and plots, great detail, and are fun easy reads.

Why read this one? Really not too many zombies, although a new type is introduced (won't spoil it) although they are a constant threat. How does an elite team of UAE operatives, fouled desalination filters, a mysterious Russian, and hundred exploding oil platforms strike you? Plus a state of the art Russian missile frigate appearing out of nowhere?

I mean, everywhere these guys go, stuff blows up good. Huh.

Amazing!

First off, damn. This book was immersive as all hell. And there were so many callbacks to previous characters in the books. The preacher dude in stores looking for fuel cells (if you know, you know) but when they started mentioning scavenging in Australia, I knew the crap was gonna hit the fan. Another amazing book, and even though I know characters survive go on to the main series, it’s still harrowing as hell to read what they went through to survive. Can’t wait for the next one!

Amazing

This series never slows down and the action is fast paced and life altering. Yaz continues to struggle to belong to his special ops group. He doesn't realize his value and his ideas and bravery are present throughout the book. This is a great series and I highly recommend it. Looking forward to the next book to see what happened when enemies forces meet in the apocalypse. Will they continue the age old fight or join together to defeat the real enemies the creatures.

Modern science fiction at its best

Modern Military science fiction at its best brilliant quality reading and listening with a strong storyline and plot that twists and turns into their nightmare scenarios that just keep on coming. These prequel books link into the arisen series of books. The tell the story before the story and characters grow and develop into people. Brilliantly written

This one has the real-time action of the moment Fick was wounded. It's how he got the gnarly facial scars and became the MARSOC leader. It's always been mentioned in the main series, but now we get to see it happen and understand how it haunts him. R. C. Bray's narration is phenomenal as always, and I loved the sneak peak of the next book.

Well, once again the worlds goint to hell in a nuclear holocaust, but without the fun parts. We have nuclear terrorists with their bombs, sabotage of military equipment and plans, and a zombie apocalypse trying to turn oil fields into the ultimate fireball.

Nothing really new here, so it makes a good read on a hot rainy day.

Masterclass in character development

We continue to learn thoughts and motives by key characters that are about to come into crushing contact. Most realistic depiction of all the interactions and camaraderie

More excitement.

Another excellent read. The Raiders seem to always end up in the soup and eventually succeed at a high price. The weaving in of new players and moving the story forward is great. It fir sure is not a ho hum read. Grabbing book 5 now.
