When Amos, a rebellious young man in the 1930s, attempts to stop time travelers from kidnapping a girl, he learns the future is overrun by aliens -- and his future grandson will cause the invasion by contacting them. When the time travelers realize who Amos is, they hunt him down with murderous intent in order to save the future.
But when their plan fails, the time travelers must offer Amos an uneasy exchange -- knowledge and wealth for his help in creating a secret refuge outside of time for the survivors of the alien attack. Their to change the future before it happens.
Strap in for one wild ride as the events of the future affect the past and what differentiates the good guys from the bad guys becomes increasingly harder to define. What would you do if no matter how hard you tried you couldn't stop the end of the world from coming, would you go mad or turn totally evil trying to stop the inevitable.
I wanted to like this one more than I did as I'd been yearning for a good time travel moments. There were some good moments and an interesting concept, but mostly hard to follow ... skipping from one many characters' points-of-view with little to no change of voice was a tad rough. Add in the already-confusing aspect of time travel, and I got a tad lost. Not horribly so, but sometimes I'd forget about what I was reading as I read it. Not a good sign. Perhaps I just wasn't as invested in the story as some.
Not my usual type of read. I don't read much in the way of Sci-Fi (except some dystopian society stuff). Ended up thoroughly enjoying it!
While I thought the book jumped right in, and throughout I found myself constantly asking questions, looking for more information, wanting to know EVERYTHING - I ended up satisfied. Surprised. And looking forward to Eric's next book.
This isn't really a "spoiler" but...
it all ended up coming together in the end. I quickly had a favorite character and was left wanting more of him, more for him and more from him.
The further into the book I got, the more I NEEDED to keep reading. I liked how the book was organized - through six characters all as first person characters in their sections, and although at times, felt like some character's development was slow, it all came together. And really I was just wanting more. I wanted more information.
The concept of "The Time Train" is so interesting and not one I have been exposed to. I look forward to more books from Eric and think he will grow and improve over time. He and his writing will age like a fine wine, I am sure. ;)
This was a tough one for me as I don't typically like sci-fi, nor do I have any experience reading sci-fi. I liked that it wasn't too "out there" and focused more on the characters than the aliens. I liked the way all of the characters and the story lines came together in the end! This book was really engaging and had me asking lots of questions as I read. There were some parts of the story I felt could have been developed more, but overall I really liked the book and the characters and I was left wanting to explore more of sci-fi writing!
